Drake Promises ‘You Won’t Even Notice’ Lil Wayne Is Gone

Rapper says he’ll keep Young Money ‘afloat till he gets back.’ By Shaheem Reid Drake Photo: MTV News The pledge is on wax and MP3: On his new single “Over,” Drake raps, “Making sure the Young Money ship is never sinking.” Even though the head of his label, Lil Wayne, is in jail , Drake insisted there’s no way he’ll let the camp slip from its top spot. “I’m gonna do everything I told him I would do, what I said in the song: keep us afloat till he gets back,” Drake said on the set of his “Over” video . “You won’t even notice he’s gone. Promise.” Last week, Wayne was sentenced to a year in jail for a 2007 gun-possession charge, but Drake knows his leader will be OK. “Lil Wayne is a legend,” Drake said. “I could never classify Wayne as victim. He’s too strong to me. Wayne is who he wants to be. People don’t understand. It’s really not an act. Lil Wayne is a character you’ll rarely run across, probably for the existence of human beings. He is that guy. He is Lil Wayne for a reason. He’s a rock star, a visionary, a workaholic. He doesn’t function like anybody I know. He’s a rare breed. “I don’t think fame really has anything to do with his situation,” Drizzy continued. “We take precautions. All of us do. To be in the public eye and to be envied and have people who hate you and never have met you or have people who love you and tattoo your face on their body and never have met you, it’s an odd feeling for anybody. It’s a rush [for me]. I love it. It gets weird sometimes. So it’s just personal choices we all make. I never felt that threatened. I’m not sure what’s going through his head at the time. But Wayne has a reason for everything, always. I trust in Wayne. I believe in Wayne. He’s gonna be all right.” Will you miss Lil Wayne during his jail time? Jay-Z Shouts Out Notorious B.I.G. During Nets Groundbreaking Event

‘We did it again, Brooklyn,’ Jay says in reference to Biggie’s Source Awards speeches. By Shaheem Reid Leave it to Jay-Z . On Thursday, Hov was in Brooklyn at the groundbreaking ceremony for the Barclays Center, the future home of the New Jersey Nets , the NBA team he co-owns. When it was Jay’s time to speak, not only did he tell the crowd — which included Beyonc

Lupe Fiasco Reaches Out To Jay Electronica, Explains Jay-Z Comment

‘Everybody thinks because you’re black and you’re from the ‘hood, you wanna be Jay-Z,’ Lu tells Mixtape Daily. By Shaheem Reid, with additional reporting by James Montgomery Lupe Fiasco Photo: Atlantic Celebrity Favorites Please respect our exclusive game. Just a couple of weeks ago, we told you how one of the underground’s favorites, Jay Electronica, said he wanted to make an album with Lupe Fiasco . He also said he wanted to go in on projects with Nas, Mos Def and a slew of others, but who’s counting? On Wednesday night in Manhattan, Lupe popped up on the red carpet for the MTV documentary “Summit on the Summit: Kilimanjaro,” which airs Sunday at 9 p.m. ET on MTV. Not only did Lu say he was down with collaborating with Jay, he’s initiating things. “I reached out to him a couple of days ago with some real serious ideas,” Lupe said. ” ‘Let’s put a program together. Something that works out and makes sense for the both of us.’ He’s a very talented MC. One of the few MCs that I actually listen to what they’re saying. I don’t listen to 98 percent of the rappers out there. But he’s one of the MCs I listen to and I’m inspired to do so. A collaboration is in the works.” Lupe also clarified the comments he made to TheAge.com , when he said he did not want to be like Jay-Z. “There’s a misunderstanding with my fanbase,” The Age quoted him as saying. ”People [at Warner] feel they know my fans more than I do. They want me to step out of my comfort zone and step into theirs. I don’t have necessarily the celebrity success they want me to have, but it’s more social success and being able to speak at a college about world affairs. That’s a success to me. I don’t want to be Jay-Z and be worth $400 million and perform on every awards show. It’s getting in touch with somebody who needs to improve their self-esteem as opposed to driving a Bentley and putting some chains on.” Lupe told us he didn’t mean any malice toward Jigga but was speaking up for individuality. “Jay-Z’s a personal friend of mine. [He] executive-produced my first album,” Fiasco said. “[My comments were] just an example using him of how people rate success. There’s an idea of the status quo that every rapper wants to be Jay-Z. Nah. Every rapper does not want to be Jay-Z. Every rapper don’t wanna be Kanye West. Everybody don’t wanna be Lil Wayne. They wanna be who they are. … You’re a fool trying to chase that success down and manage it like that. I always look at my success as further than a dollar sign, further than record sales. … Everybody thinks because you’re black and you’re from the ‘hood, you wanna be Jay-Z. There’s kids who wanna be astrophysicists and don’t care about rap. That should be OK. You should be OK just being you, working your regular job and being happy. That’s why I made that statement. I felt it need to be said.” Don’t miss “Summit on the Summit: Kilimanjaro,” airing Sunday at 9 p.m. ET on MTV. T.I. Name-Checks Tiger Woods On Leaked Usher Song

Atlanta MC mentions the scandal-weary golfer on singer’s ‘Guilty.’ By Shaheem Reid T.I. Photo: aylor Hill/ FilmMagic The hook of the first songs T.I. guests on since being sentenced to a year and a day in prison says, “Don’t take me to jail.” Isn’t it ironic? Tip collaborates with Usher on a new leaked record from Raymond v. Raymond called “Guilty,” where the singer is charged with breaking his girl’s heart. Tip did record another song with Usher last year before going to prison, but it sounds like the rhymes on “Guilty” were recorded recently — he name-checks a certain scandal-plagued athlete . “Right hand to the sky/ Strike me down if I a lie,” the King of the South proclaims. “If she sayin’ she’s the victim in this case then what am I/ She got proof, well I got alibis too/ I never been on bullsh– … she ain’t caught me on no Tiger Woods sh–/ Do what I expected when she met me/ Ballin’ against the law/ Shawty arrest me then.” Usher then pleads guilty. “I guess I’m guilty of always being in the club,” he sings. “I guess I’m guilty ’cause girls always wanna show me love/ I guess I’m guilty for living and having all of the fun/ Girl, I’m guilty for that/ Girl, I’m guilty.” Other recently leaked songs include “She Don’t Know” featuring Ludacris and “OMG” featuring Will.I.Am. Raymond v. Raymond is due in stores March 30 . Related Artists T.I. Usher

Biggie’s Best: Debating The Brooklyn MC’s Finest, 13 Years Later

More than a decade after the Notorious B.I.G.’s death, our Mixtape Daily team is still hashing it out. By Shaheem Reid and Rahman Dukes Notorious B.I.G. Photo: Getty Images Legacy Salute: Biggie’s Best, Part 1 Tuesday (March 9) marks the 13th anniversary of the death of the Notorious B.I.G. There aren’t enough accolades to give the Brooklyn bone-crusher. Biggie helped mold one of the greatest eras in hip-hop with a versatile style and gift for wordplay that has him perennially listed in the top three when you ask most hip-hop fans to name the greatest MCs of all time. Here, your favorite hip-hop team chooses some of Frank White’s pre-eminent musical accomplishments. Best Album Shaheem Reid : Life After Death How do you distinguish extreme excellence? How do you look at two albums by the same artist — both of which you feel are in the top 10 greatest hip-hop creations ever made — and put one over the other? Ready to Die vs. Life After Death is a subject I’ve debated going on 10 years now. No argument has a clear-cut winner. Both albums are classics. Both have stood the test of time. You can’t logically dis a song on either LP. There might be some records you prefer over others, but Big didn’t have anything wack on his albums. For me, though, I go with Life simply because I feel that it was Biggie at his best. He had evolved. He grew. Big touched all bases from the ‘hood to Hollywood in two immaculately put-together discs — a feat that no other MC has been able to duplicate since. Nothing could ever replicate the initial euphoria that Ready brought, but Life was the master with his craft fully perfected. Rahman Dukes : Ready to Die Nothing can replace that feeling hip-hop heads in New York City experienced in the days leading up to this release. I specifically recall the Friday before RTD was set to shock the world. It seemed like every car from Brooklyn to Queens was pumping “Juicy” and “Unbelievable.” Back then, albums were on cassette tapes and not bootlegged. Imagine hearing this flawless masterpiece for the first time in its entirety. The East Coast ran hip hop in the ’90s, and Ready was the icing on the cake. The movement the album set off in the Tri-State Area was the first to do it, only duplicated years later when 50 Cent dropped Get Rich or Die Tryin’. Hmm, that title Get Rich or Die Tryin’ sounds eerily similar to … you know the rest. Best Single Unanimous Choice : “Hypnotize” “Hypnotize” had the million-dollar video with the mermaids and the car chases, but it’s way more than the visual production that puts this record slightly above our other favorites Big singles like “Big Poppa” and “One More Chance.” “Hypnotize” was so hot in its heyday that it felt like the walls in the club would just melt when the DJs pulled it back (sometimes up to 10 times in a row). We were absolutely devastated that Big was gone, but this record helped us get through it. Big left us three and a half minutes of pure jubilation to celebrate his life and legacy. Best Album Cut Reid : “The What” from Ready to Die The Bad Boy/ Wu-Tang Clan pairing was too much. “N—as know soft like the Twinkie fillin’/ Playing the villain/ Prepare for this rap killin’/ Biggie Smalls is the illest/ Your style is played out like Arnold and that ‘What you talkin’ bout Willis.’ ” Big was as merciless as an NFL linebacker attacking the blindside of an unsuspecting quarterback, wonderfully cocky and as humorous as eight episodes of “Def Comedy Jam” all in just a few bars. You put that with a hungry and focused Method Man, who lyrically spat broken glass all over the track, and you wonder why Diddy — in his infinite wisdom — never pushed the button on this classic with radio adds and a video. Dukes : “Everyday Struggle” from Ready to Die B.I.G. was a true master at making some of the most hard-core tracks come off as commercial material. If you tune out exactly what he was saying on songs such as this one, you’d think it was something that you could expect to hear on regular rotation. But then there are lines like this: “I got my honeys on the Amtrak/ With the crack in the crack of her ass/ Two pounds of hash in the stash/ I wait for hon to make some quick cash/ I told her she could be lieutenant, bi— got gassed.” It’s a bit explicit, but I’m sure you get my point. Best Guest Appearance Reid : Jay-Z’s “Brooklyn’s Finest” Another tough one. Big was prolific not just with his own projects, but with doling out the love on his peers’ records as well. I had an inner conflict trying to figure out if I should go with Shaq’s “You Can’t Stop the Reign,” where the swagga was off the Richter, or Puff’s “Victory.” But in the end, I had to give it to his back-and-forth with Jigga. Both MCs were relentless, neither one wanting to let the other get the upper hand. In the end, Big and Jigga made the best tag-team duo since Slick Rick and Doug E. Fresh on “The Show.” Dukes : Shaquille O’Neal’s “You Can’t Stop the Reign” I think the beauty behind this monster is that this record came out around the time when B.I.G. was in rehab and took a break from the rap game. The wordplay on this song is historical. “A lime to a lemon/ My D.C. women bringin’ in to G-minimums/ To condos with elevators in them/ Vehicles with televisions in them/ Watch they entourage turn yours to just mirages/ Disappearin’ acts, strictly nines and macs/ Killers be surreal, Copperfield material/ My dreams is vivid, work hard to live it/ Any place I visit I got land there/ How can players stand there and say I sound like them, hello.” Ten years since the release of this song, nothing comes close to what Big had to say. The irony is that he gave such a jewel away to Shaquille O’Neal. Shaq, you owe the Christopher Wallace estate big time for this one. Lil Wayne Will Be Missed By Diddy, LeBron James

‘We’ll be waiting for him when he gets back,’ James says. By Shaheem Reid Lebron James Photo: MTV News Now that Lil Wayne has been sentenced to one year in prison , hip-hop’s biggest rock star has left a huge void for his fans, friends and family to fill. Weezy has lined up a bunch of music and videos to tide everyone over in his absence, but it wont be the same as having the man himself out and about to create something fresh on the drop of dime during a live performance or appearance. “I think we gonna miss a certain energy that Wayne has,” Diddy said recently . “The beauty about it is, he’ll be back and hopefully he’ll come back a better person. Whenever we get in trouble, we’re in the public spotlight. So hopefully there’s a lot of kids out there who could learn from any mistakes that we may have put ourselves in, even if we’re not guilty of the crime sometimes. We are human. People have to learn: ‘Make sure you know where you’re going, who you riding with, what the situation is.’ We’re targets. I’m just happy he doesn’t have to do a lot of time and that he’ll be out, and hopefully he’ll use the time wisely and use it in a positive way.” But Wayne’s appeal translates to all forms of entertainment, including the world of sports. One of the NBA’s most renowned athletes, LeBron James, says he cannot wait for Weezy to make his return. “[The game] is definitely gonna miss him,” James said. Wayne appeared on the soundtrack to James’ “More Than a Game” documentary last year, contributing to the song “Forever.” “I think we all love his inspiration behind his music, how much time he puts into his music. The game will miss him, but we’ll be waiting for him when he gets back.” Related Videos Lil Wayne’s ‘Road To Rikers’ Lil Wayne Goes To Jail Related Photos Lil Wayne Heads To Rikers Island Related Artists Lil Wayne Diddy

The Game Laments Lil Wayne’s Jail Time: ‘I Don’t Like It At All’

‘Everybody makes mistakes,’ the Compton MC says of Weezy’s gun-possession charges. By Shaheem Reid The Game Photo: Peter Kramer/Getty Images After Lil Wayne’s sentencing Monday (March 8), his family, fans and friends are definitely bummed to see him go. “It’s f—ed up,” the Game said about his friend and “My Life” collaborator’s jail time. “I don’t like it all. I don’t have one good feeling about it. I’m happy Tip is coming out , but sad that Wayne and Gucci gotta go in . I don’t like to see that. I like for my n—as that co-exist with me in hip-hop to win. I don’t like to see [for example] Fab go to jail just as much as he don’t want to see Game to jail. That sh– is wack. “As n—as is approaching their 30s, the end of their 30s, and becoming hip-hop veterans and legends, we gotta become a little more wise,” Game continued. “Everybody makes mistakes. I’m pretty sure at this point, Wayne is kicking himself in the ass for the sh– he did. But n—as is fathers, n—as is growing. With age comes wisdom, man. We’ll learn and we’ll get it all together. As long as we stay together, we’ll be straight. This sh– is a brotherhood. Long as we got each other, we’ll be straight.” Game said he would love to see that solidarity among his peers come to light with everyone joining together to make a positive song with a message. “We’re a bunch of [guys] from the same country that came from the same struggle, we grew into the same dominance,” the Compton MC said. “Remember ‘Fight the Power’ and ‘Respect Yourself’? … We gotta get back to that. ‘All in the Same Gang’ — when n—as gonna do one of them? On some cool sh–. That’ll be cool. We gotta figure it out. But I don’t wanna be a part if it if the n—as I admire and whose music I listen to is in jail. When Wayne do his six months or eight months and Tip get all the way out and Gucci is out, [we artists] can we really do it. These are the n—as that do it in hip-hop right now.” Related Videos Lil Wayne’s ‘Road To Rikers’ Lil Wayne Goes To Jail Related Photos Lil Wayne Heads To Rikers Island Lil Wayne’s Battle With His Gun Possession Case Related Artists The Game Lil Wayne

Rapper J-Kwon Is Alive And Well

‘Tipsy’ rapper hadn’t been heard from in a month, prompting his record label to search for him. By Shaheem Reid J-Kwon Photo: Scott Gries/ Getty Images J-Kwon is alive and well, according to his manager and publicist. On Wednesday, we reported that his friends, family and business associates were highly concerned because no one had been able to reach the St. Louis-born rapper for about a month. His record label, Gracie Productions, even set up the Twitter page @WhereIsJKwon so fans could write in with any info they had. A few of Kwon’s business associates were even going door to door Wednesday in hopes of locating their missing friend. The 24-year-old must have seen the news, because he reached out to his loved ones. According to his rep, the rapper sent his apologies to anyone he worried. Kwon’s manager and co-CEO of Gracie, Dorian Washington, issued a statement Thursday afternoon (March 4): “I am very happy to let everyone know that I personally spoke with J-Kwon today, and he is OK. He’d like to send a sincere apology to his friends and everyone who showed concern this week. He was taking some time to himself as he sometimes does, not realizing that people would start to worry after a while. A few days out of touch versus a month is quite a difference. Right now, he just wants to keep doing what he’s doing and will be more available for those who care about him. We thank you again for your outreach, and we are relieved to know he’ll be all right.” J-Kwon rocketed into the rap game in 2004 with the club hit “Tipsy.” He is scheduled to release a self-titled album at the end of the month. Diddy Celebrates ‘Biggie Day’ With Brooklyn Party, MTV Tribute

On Tuesday, MTV Jams will play videos by Notorious B.I.G. and other late artists. By Shaheem Reid Diddy is going to the hometown of his friend and greatest artist Notorious B.I.G. next week to celebrate Big’s life and legacy at Brooklyn club the Lab. “We’re trying to make March 9th a national hip-hop holiday,” Diddy told MTV News. “It already is, on the low. MTV is going to have a big special. We’re doing a party. I’m going to Brooklyn. It’s gonna be the first time I’m throwing a party in Brooklyn. I’m from Harlem. Everybody in Harlem knows you don’t usually go over the bridge to Brooklyn. It’s a big, big deal. Me being such a Harlemite, I’m going over there to pay respect to my man. It’s gonna be a big party in Brooklyn with Mister Cee. It’s a big day. It’s a day to celebrate his life. It’s a day to celebrate the life of the man. We done did the movie, the records. It’s something that, I guess, as a label we’re obsessed with: making sure people don’t forget about this man in a positive way. March 9 is Biggie Day. … Bump Biggie all day, feel good and positive.” Diddy also said that, unlike some of the more swank shindigs like his 40th birthday party , it is not a black-tie affair. You do have to be extra fly, though. “You could wear any of your sides of Biggie,” he welcomed. “He had his ‘Machine Gun Funk’ attire. He had his ‘Big Poppa’ attire. Come as you are. Come with some positive energy. Get ready to shout his lyrics. We gonna have a special show we putting together for him. It’s gonna be off the chain.” On Tuesday, MTV Jams will be playing videos by B.I.G. and a slew of other fallen musical soldiers, such as Michael Jackson, Tupac Shakur, Aaliyah, Big Pun, the Lost Boyz and their deceased member Freaky Tah and Camoflauge. March 14 on MTV2, “Sucker Free Sunday” is running a special tribute to Biggie, hosted by Diddy. Related Artists Notorious B.I.G. Diddy

French Montana Says Debut Album Needs To Be A ‘Masterpiece’

‘I’m not no overnight rapper,’ Akon signee tells Mixtape Daily. By Shaheem Reid French Montana Photo: Konvict Music The O.D.: A Mixtape Daily Exclusive French Montana is in no rush to put out his debut album. One of Akon’s newest signees said he has enough money to continue serving up material through mixtapes, such as his latest, Mac Wit Da Cheese 2. His first album has to be classic, French said. “My album is set for late summer,” French said last week while shooting a video for his mixtape track “Bad Habits,” with guest Bun B . “It’s called Excuse My French. I’m just working. I wanna come with a masterpiece, man. I’m not no overnight rapper. I’m comfortable with where I’m at. My followers are my real followers. I ain’t no phase. I’m here to stay. [The release] could be late summer, it could come out past then, as long as it’s a masterpiece when we put it out. … You gotta understand, that’s what they gonna remember you for, your first album.
