After hitting up the Maybach Music Group listening party in the Bronx, Young Money rapper Drake headed to New York’s SoHo, where his camp reportedly got into an altercation with Chris Brown’s crew on Wednesday night. According to TMZ , the NYPD has confirmed that Drizzy and Breezy got into a fight at W.I.P. nightclub, where bottles were allegedly thrown. A photo posted to Brown’s Instagram showing the singer sporting a bloody gash on his chin quickly made the rounds on Thursday (June 14). But Breezy’s timeline had been sanitized entirely at press time. Drake and Brown have been the subject of rumors, particularly in recent months, as buzz built that the two were fighting over Rihanna. Brown’s long-term relationship with the Bajan singer imploded after he assaulted her in 2009, but they continued to be linked to each other. Drake has spoken in song about his own fleeting romantic encounter with Rihanna; the pair were spotted out together during Memorial Day weekend in Miami. Five people were injured in last night’s brawl, before the New York City Police Department were called in the early morning hours, around 4 a.m. TMZ reported that Brown and Drake were not at the club when police arrived; no arrests were made. ‘It could have been one of the most incredible records ever,’ he says of his attempt to record with Winehouse. While Usher was working on his seventh studio album, Looking 4 Myself , he was determined to take fans on a musical journey and experiment with sounds he’d never explored before. So, in addition to teaming up with Diplo for the seductive lead single, “Climax,” , as well as EDM giants Swedish House Mafia, Usher said he sought out producer Salaam Remi because he was very interested in doing a song with Remi protege, Amy Winehouse , before the singer died unexpectedly died at age 27 in July 2011. “We met and we talked about it for a moment when I saw her,” Usher said of a brief sit-down with the troubled crooner to discuss the potential soul summit. “There was a few conversations that took place, but we never quite made it to it … I would have loved it.” One of those talks occurred while the unlikely duo were shopping at the ritzy London department store Selfridges. “I was shopping and she was doing some private shopping and she came out and we kind of crossed each other’s [paths] and, [I was like] ‘Is that Amy Winehouse?’ … And before you know it we talked and exchanged information and I invited her to a show … and she didn’t come.” Winehouse was out of the country at the time and sent a relative to the gig in her stead, but that missed connection has stuck with Usher to this day. “It could have been one of the most incredible records ever,” he said. “A voice like that comes once in a lifetime.” Usher still wanted to get in the studio with Remi, and though it was a hard time for the producer, the pair met in New York and worked it out. “The style and the sound that we worked, I felt would definitely compliment what he does as a producer and what I have to offer.” The story that the two explored on “Sins of My Father” was a new one for Usher, who had never spoken about his feelings for his dad in song before. “That was a hard one, but he gave me a palette that really worked.” Related Videos MTV News Extended Play: Usher
‘Let’s get going, summer is almost here!’ Usher tells MTV News. Usher has ruled the airwaves in the summer for years, with hits like “You Make Me Wanna” and “U Remind Me” making fans roll down their windows and pump up their radios to his infectious tracks. Most recently, in 2010, Usher hit the #1 spot on the Billboard Hot 100 during the summer months with his inescapable hit “OMG,” and now he’s looking to repeat that success with “Scream,” the second single from his seventh studio album. “Let’s get going, summer is almost here!” Usher told MTV News. “It’s intended to be that, but I don’t think that was the only thing. We thought about live performance, we thought about mixing and matching and also giving people an energy that only [producer Max Martin] would be able to create.” “Scream” is the latest single from Usher’s just-released album, Looking 4 Myself, which he hopes will not only get people on the dance floor, but also affect them in a more personal manner. “If I’m gonna move you, I want to move you. I hope that it could be something that could be life-changing,” the singer last month during “MTV First: Usher.” “You may be going through something real crazy, who knows, and just need to get out and just enjoy yourself. So I always think about the club, I always think about that song that will be able to let you out of that slump, if you’re in it.” Usher’s latest album, which he called an “evolution” of sound , is just the next step in his musical risk-taking. He credits longtime producer Jermaine Dupri with the opportunity to reach many different genres of music. “If I do track back to the first time I was about to take a risk, even though it wasn’t about my direction, it was more so by Jermaine Dupri’s direction with ‘You Make Me Wanna,’ ” Usher said. “You didn’t really hear that tone or that instrument on top of an R&B record, so it was an incredible collaboration or mixture of urban and classic R&B or pop… that really began to open up the conversation and allow people to understand, ‘Oh, wow, this is not just an artist that you could put in a box or put in a specific category.’ ” Are you excited for Usher’s album? Aussie singer gives fans a preview of his full-length Paradise album with four-track EP. By Jocelyn Vena Cody Simpson Photo: Jason Merritt/ Getty Images Before Cody Simpson drops his full-length Paradise album in October, he’s giving fans a bit of a preview with a four-track EP released on Tuesday (June 12). And from the looks of Preview to Paradise, there’s a mix of everything, all with that Simpson touch. “I wanted to show each aspect of the album and they all fit together well, while being diverse at the same time,” the Aussie told MTV News on Tuesday. “With my single ‘Wish You Were Here,’ it showed the dance/pop side of my album. [With] ‘Gentleman,’ I wanted to showcase the singer/songwriter aspect of what I do and I thought they all went well together as well. “My favorite song? I don’t know! It’s like having four little kids,” he added. “You can’t really pick a favorite, but I do like ‘Wish You Were Here’ because it’s a great dance song and will be my single for the summer.” “Wish You Were Here” certainly proclaims his love for pop music, and having hit the studio with two of the biggest producers/writers working in the game only adds to the song’s pure pop feel, highlighted by the song’s pulsing beat and Simpson’s swoon-worthy admissions like “All I want/ Is to be home with you.” “It’s a really great feeling when you put a song out there that you feel could compete with artists like the biggest artists out there right now. It’s amazing,” he said. “I recorded this song with amazing producers Dr. Luke … and I wrote it with Taio Cruz and they both had a lot of experience and a lot of big summer hits. It’s cool to be able to work with people that have had experience with that [and] make it as best as it can be while making it my own.” However, while “Wish” is a dance-influenced track, he notes that his musical signature isn’t in the world of churning out club-bangers. “Being a pop artist you also have to have your own little twist here and there,” he said. “I feel like when you get to know an artist and you listen to all their music you kind of start to see things that they do in songs that make it [theirs]. I play a lot of guitar. ‘Wish You Were Here’ doesn’t have too much guitar in it, but I feel like that’s uniquely me.” In addition to dropping Preview to Paradise, the singer is wrapping up his own spat of shows this week. Then he will hit the road with Big Time Rush beginning in July. By Christina Garibaldi Usher Usher ‘s seventh studio album may be titled Looking 4 Myself , but judging from the sound of his latest effort, he’s found what he’s looking for. Although the musical landscape has drastically changed over the years, unlike most artists, Usher has consistently evolved with it. He takes some risks with this album, and let’s face it: He’s earned the right to do just that. Usher has called his latest album’s sound “revolutionary pop” and that’s exactly what it is. Looking 4 Myself takes his fans on a musical journey that has the singer experimenting with different sounds and working with different producers, but at the same time sticking with what he does best — making infectious music that gets people on their feet and in the clubs. Usher himself admits that this album is unlike anything he’s done, and he recently told MTV News that he credits his life experiences as the real inspiration behind this new sound. “It is an experience that was kind of based off of the places that I’ve gone and the music that I’ve listened to, the styles that I’ve been inspired by and also some of the emotions that I’ve been able to feel,” Usher said. “You know, for me, every album should represent kind of an evolution. The last three years of my life have been extremely experimental in style, lifestyle, in music and in fun. I travel to different places, met and sat with different artists, made a lot of friends, and in doing that I created new music.” One can tell that Usher took his time with this album, meticulously picking out each beat and working with producers he’s never worked with before. He teamed up with Diplo , who produced the bold, artistic lead single, “Climax,” Swedish House Mafia and the late Amy Winehouse’s producer, Salaam Remi. Mixing these new producers with veterans like will.i.am , Max Martin and Pharrell , Usher found himself with a sound that mixes retro, electro and R&B. “I think when making this album, it was about what felt good. After I had an understanding of different styles, I began to find the music that I felt comfortable with, even though it was a little bit different,” Usher said. “I would find the melody and the emotion in it, most of the time it’s a beat, it’s a beat on the guitar or the piano, and then the melody finds its way and then the words begin to find a way. A lot of them came from travel so I thought back to where I was, kind of took my mental diary out and began to take myself back to that experience to what I think the people were experiencing or what I felt in that moment.” Looking 4 Myself drops Tuesday, June 12.
