MTV News got the chance to listen to the June 19 release in advance and breaks down the standout tracks on the album. By Jocelyn Vena Justin Bieber on his “Believe” album cover Photo: Justin Bieber/ Twitter Justin Bieber is leaving the sweet, puppy-love days of his My World albums behind for the glitzier and more mature Believe , which depicts him in the club, falling in love with girls and the hard beats. When he dropped the album’s first single, “Boyfriend,” back in March, it was clear he was making a statement, declaring, “I am man, hear me roar!” That transition is explored even further on the rest of Believe. In addition to the more mature sound, the tracks are really strong and sequenced well — they play into one another. Bieber and Usher , the album’s executive producer, have managed to craft an album that almost never misses a beat. And on an album with a lot of beats, that’s saying something. Fans are treated to the singles “All Around the World,” which features his “Baby” pal Ludacris, and “Boyfriend” first. They are strong setups for what’s to come as the album mostly bounces between swaggerfied pop ‘n’ b and epic dance music. There’s a ballad or two thrown in for good measure, just to keep Beliebers swooning. Having enlisted the likes of Max Martin, Rodney Jerkins, Babyface, Diplo and the Messengers to help shape the funky sound of the album, a quick glance through the album’s credits proves that Bieber was incredibly hands-on as well. His name appears on nearly every song’s credits. Wondering how that all shakes out? Well, before the album drops on June 19, MTV News has rounded up five standout tracks from the release. “As Long as You Love Me” The song grooves thanks to vocal effects that mesh well with the staccato beat. The track is filled with synths and a pulsing undercurrent that highlights Big Sean’s verse, where he spits lines like “I don’t know if this makes sense/ But you’re my hallelujah.” That gospel is mirrored on Bieber’s chorus, where he sings, “As long as you love me/ We could be starving/ We could be broke.” He’s expected to tease the track next week, making it a perfect candidate to be the song of the summer. “Beauty and the Beat” Speaking of summer songs, this track features the one and only Nicki Minaj and a Martin-produced beat. It is a certifiable grinding and fist-pumping club banger. And Bieber isn’t shy about his intentions on it, singing, “Body rock/ I can feel your body rock.” Minaj is sassy, as always, flirting back, but noting, “Gotta keep my eye out for Selena.” “Right Here” Drake and Bieber enter each other’s musical spaces for this sexy mid-tempo track. Drake doesn’t rap on it, opting instead to use his R&B flair and singing. The two guys, who certainly have shown their soft sides in the past, put them on full display when they let their special ladies know “I’m right here” on the chorus, later sharing emotions like “[I] promise to be all that you need.” “Thought of You” Diplo softened his love for crunchy beats for this track. It swirls and crescendos around Bieber as he repeats “I’m in love with the thought of you” on the chorus. As the song continues, it breaks down as he sings, “Gonna take some time/ But I’ll figure it out.” Diplo is clearly felt on the track courtesy of its hand claps layered with the song’s beat and Bieber vocals, where he wonders, “Why should we fight these feelings?” “Catching Feelings” Sure, much of the album is beat-heavy, but Bieber does slow it down. There’s the inspirational “Believe,” but it’s the ballad “Catching Feelings” that shows the singer’s softer side thanks to an assist from ballad king Babyface. Bieber ponders feelings like “I want to know if she feels the same” over guitar music. The song definitely has a ’90s R&B vibe to it and gives fans a second to breathe between dance tracks. ‘I have no desire to be super-skinny,’ Stronger singer tells Redbook. In a new interview with Redbook magazine, the singer talks all about how she lost the weight but said never wants to lose too many pounds. “I do cardio. I run. I strength-train using my own body weight. I don’t like free weights, because I build muscle easily,” she told the magazine. “Really, what I try to instill in my fans is to be healthy and happy. I have no desire to be super-skinny.” In addition to sporting a new dress size in the July issue, Clarkson has recently started rocking a new hair color. After being brunette for a while, she was photographed in London on Wednesday with a deep, honey-blond style . She’s in the U.K. promoting her new single, “Dark Size,” as well as her new gig as a mentor on the U.S. singing competition show “Duets.” As one of the show’s coaches, Kelly definitely has wisdom to share, considering her experience as the first-ever “American Idol” winner. She will probably offer the guidance she wished she had during her time on the Fox show. “I’m going to be completely honest: I had no one looking out for me,” she said. “They were looking out for the show, and it was horrible. I was 19 years old. I was smart enough to know that it wasn’t about me, but that didn’t make it any easier. I’m all cried out about it, but my first four years, I hated my life; I almost quit a dozen times.” These days the singer does have someone looking out for her. She met boyfriend Brandon Blackstock through her pal Reba McEntire; Blackstock is the country star’s stepson. Now, the queen of breakup anthems joked that she’s waiting for the other shoe to drop. “I know — where’s the kick in the ass? I told my assistant that today. Singer asks fans to obey police as outdoor concert turns into mob scene. By John Mitchell Justin Bieber performs in Oslo, Norway Photo: Getty Images Justin Bieber attracts a crowd wherever he goes, but things got a little out of hand in Norway on Wednesday as the pop star kicked off the European promo tour behind his new album, Believe . Bieber was in the Scandinavian country’s capital city, Oslo, to perform a free six-song concert outside of the Oslo Opera House, but the site was quickly overrun by several thousand fans, who at one point began chasing after a car presumed to be transporting Bieber to the concert location while ignoring police warnings and causing a spike in mobile usage that briefly crippled cellular service in the city. Police reportedly threated to cancel the performance — and, according to TMZ , nearly declared a state of emergency — before Bieber took to Twitter to try to calm his legion of fans. “Please listen to the police. I don’t want anyone getting hurt. I want everything to go to plan but your safety must come first,” Bieber tweeted . “For the show to happen u must all listen to the police. We are all concerned for your safety and I want what is best for u. Please listen.” The “Boyfriend” singer’s words of caution apparently tamed fans enough, and police allowed the show to proceed. However, officials demanded Bieber push the start time back by half an hour so scene security would not deteriorate further. Billboard reports that an on-scene security officer said “about 15 girls passed out.” Police cite the venue chosen as one of the key issues that contributed to the chaotic scene: “The concert should be held somewhere other than roof of the Opera, which has clear space limitations,” a police official told the Norwegian NRK news service . The concert was filmed as part of Bieber’s upcoming ” Justin Bieber: All Around the World ” TV special, which follows the singer on his 12-day, seven-country promo tour. The special is set to air at 8 p.m. June 21 on NBC. Bieber is currently on his way to Paris for his next appearance. This isn’t the first time Bieber’s presence has resulted in an out-of-control scene: In November 2009, a teenage girl was injured and several fights broke out as thousands descended on the Roosevelt Field Mall in Long Island, New York , in what devolved into a stampede ahead of the singer’s scheduled appearance there. Bieber’s manager, Scooter Braun, was charged with reckless endangerment and criminal nuisance for failing to properly control the situation after receiving police warnings about potential problems at the venue. Seth MacFarlane has a message for those who take issue with his show’s unusual Emmy Award campaign, which includes a flier that pushes for Family Guy with the following lines: “Come on, you bloated, overprivileged Brentwood Jews. Let us into your little club.” Chill. Comparing the joke to Ricky Gervais hosting the Golden Globes , the series creator told E! News: “Hollywood is a town of very well-to-do folks who live very comfortably. They have a very comfortable lifestyle, they do what they love, there’s not much that is bad in their life. So they should be able to laugh at themselves. About a month after sources confirmed the singer and the actor had split , insiders now tell Us Weekly that Kinney has joined Gaga on tour in Asia and all is good between the couple again. “They sure looked like they were back together – holding hands and being cute everywhere they went,” a witness says of Gaga and Kinney in Thailand. “They were seen kissing right as they got into the [hotel] elevator.” Kinney is best known for his role on the Vampire Diaries , but will anchor Chicago Fire this fall on NBC. By Gil Kaufman Gotye Photo: Eleven Gotye has scored the longest-running #1 hit on the Billboard Hot 100 chart with “Somebody That I Used To Know.” So if one hit is good, 10 must be better, right? That seems to be the logic behind the upcoming release of a “Somebody” remix album, which, according to The Hollywood Reporter , is scheduled to drop on iTunes June 8 and feature reworkings of the song by Adrock, Tiesto, Gang of Colours, Bibio, M-Phazes, Faux Pas, 4Frnt, Sneaker For, Dan Aux and Miami Nights 1984. “Somebody” just marked its seventh week at #1, passing the year’s other inescapable single, fun.’s “We Are Young,” which held the top spot for six weeks. And if you’re psyched about that Gotye bounty, you’ll be even more excited to hear that the singer’s Australia-only 2006 sophomore album, Like Drawing Blood , will get re-released in the U.S. in July. But wait, there’s more! Gotye will kick off a 33-date North American tour on August 22 in Denver, Colorado at the legendary Red Rocks Amphitheatre with support from Chairlift, Missy Higgins and Zammuto, but, alas, not Kimbra, the other voice heard on “Somebody.” Along the way, the tour will take Gotye to a number of landmark events and venues, including the Bumbershoot Music and Arts Festival, Los Angeles’ Greek Theatre, New York’s Radio City Music Hall, Nashville’s Ryman Auditorium and Austin, Texas, where he’ll wrap things up on October 13 with a slot at the Austin City Limits festival.
