By Rob Markman Verse Simmonds Photo: MTV News Behind the Beats: Verse Simmonds After finding success crafting the music for Rihanna’s “Man Down,” the production duo known as the Jugganauts — Sham “Sak Pase” Joseph and Verse Simmonds — are looking to recapture the magic on the Bajan beauty’s upcoming sixth album. “From what I understand, she is closing the album up now, and we did two records for her that she really, really loved and I’m really excited about them as well,” Simmonds told Mixtape Daily. “They are records that we wrote and produced as the Jugganauts.” Simmonds is hoping that he and partner Sak Pase land another track on Rihanna’s album. And while he couldn’t confirm the Jugganauts’ contributions will make the final cut, he said was “99.999 percent” certain for now. For those wondering whether the singer’s new tunes will sound anything like the reggae-infused “Man Down,” Simmonds says no. “Nah, definitely not, because we always try to constantly — as producers, as artists — we try to always come with something different, a whole new sound,” he said without elaborating on what that new record would sound like. Tom Felton, James Franco and other castmembers say come for the apes, stay for the story … or just the apes. By Kara Warner Freida Pinto and James Franco at the “Rise of the Planet of the Apes” premiere Photo: Frazer Harrison/ Getty Images HOLLYWOOD — There is enough intrigue, presumed destruction and primate shenanigans in the trailers for “Rise of the Planet of the Apes” to entice more than just the fans of the 1968 original into theaters when the film opens next week. But when MTV News caught up with the principal castmembers at the Hollywood premiere on Thursday, we asked them to sell us on a few more of the film’s must-see elements, aside from their furry co-stars. Basically, if people come to see the apes, what will make them stay? “Wow, James [Franco], Freida [Pinto], Andy [Serkis], everyone else,” Tom Felton said, speaking to his co-stars’ appeal. “There is a mixture of CGI and special effects that we’ve never seen onscreen before, along with a strong story and a strong message: Humans can’t play God too much. We should not overstep our boundaries when it comes to manipulating Mother Nature.” Pinto countered that it’s all about the apes. “I think this is one of few films that really give them a voice as well,” she said. “Of course, ‘Planet of the Apes’ did as well, but ‘Rise of the Planet of the Apes’ gives them a voice in a very revolutionary way.” One of the prominent primate voices heard is that of Caesar, played by seasoned motion-capture performer Andy Serkis, who, according to Franco, is the main reason why the film is any good. “The apes, I think Andy Serkis and WETA should get top billing,” Franco said. “They stole the show; they’re incredible.” Actor John Lithgow, who plays the father of Franco’s character, was the only one who thought folks will start out loving the apes and leave loving the humans. “They [will] stay for the people, and the extent to which the apes become people,” he said. “It’s a story, it’s a great story, that’s why they stay.” Check out everything we’ve got on “Rise of the Planet of the Apes.” For breaking news, celebrity columns, humor and more — updated around the clock — visit MTVMoviesBlog.com . Gaga performed the song twice on Thursday, on ‘So You Think You Can Dance’ and ‘Jimmy Kimmel Live!’ By Jocelyn Vena Lady Gaga on “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” Photo: ABC Perhaps it wasn’t that big of a secret to begin with, but on Thursday night when Lady Gaga stopped by ” Jimmy Kimmel Live! ” the singer finally confirmed what everybody already presumed: “You and I” will be her next single from Born This Way. When asked what she planned to perform that night in addition to “The Edge of Glory,” Gaga replied, “I’m going to sing my brand-new single ‘You and I.’ ” She recently shot the video for the track in Nebraska. Gaga also performed those two tracks on “So You Think You Can Dance” on Thursday night, following her appearance on the show the day before as a guest judge. Before taking the “Kimmel” stage and pounding the keys on her piano for the track, she joked around with the host about her killer cooking skills, her five Emmy nods for her HBO special and, of course, her nomination for the Bowling Hall of Fame. “I am a good bowler pre-Budweiser,” she laughed. “And then once the beers start loading up, I become worse and worse, which is really great for whoever takes me out on the date, ’cause I’m a good, cheap date and a terrible bowler.” So, does Gaga ever don bowling shoes? “Absolutely not!” she said. “What if one of my fans walked into the bowling alley and saw me in flats? They’d have a heart attack.” When Kimmel asked if one day she planned on actually creating any Little Monsters of her own, the always forthright Gaga shared that she does plan on starting a family someday. “Do I want to have kids? Someday … long, long day from now,” she said. She joked about whether or not she’d love her kids even if they didn’t turn out to be gay, telling Kimmel, “No, I actually don’t even like you ’cause you’re not.” Gaga also just announced the planned release of a coffee-table book, called “Lady Gaga,” the photos for which are by fashion photographer Terry Richardson. Lady Gaga is truly the new Queen of All Media. Mother Monster announced on Thursday that she will be releasing a hefty coffee-table book on November 22 featuring more than 350 pictures of her taken over the past year by controversial fashion photographer Terry Richardson. According to Publishers Weekly , “Lady Gaga” will feature never-before-scene images of the singer taken during a 10-month period in which Richardson followed Gaga on the road, in the studio and everywhere in between as he was given complete access to her everyday life. The pictures range from the Lollapalooza festival in August 2010 to the final shows of this year’s Monster Ball. Gaga will write the foreword, and Jamie Raab, executive vice president and publisher of Grand Central Publishing, which is issuing the book, said in a statement, “We are proud to be publishing this remarkable collaboration between Lady Gaga and Terry Richardson and anticipate that it will be one of the most stunning, provocative and coveted books of the 2011 holiday season.” A limited edition of the book will be released next year. Some of the images Richardson has been taking of Gaga over the past year have already raised eyebrows. Richardson, who is known for his provocative, often explicit images, took some topless shots of the singer in February for a Supreme ad as well as the instant classic shots of Gaga draped in a version of her infamous raw-meat dress for the cover of Vogue Hommes Japan, which also featured shots of her male alter ego, Joe Calderone . He also collaborated with Gaga for the May issue of Harper’s Bazaar , in which he captured her on all fours in just fishnets, a nude bra and white boots on top of a mirror-covered piano. Remi opens up about working with Winehouse on third album, which is not complete. By James Montgomery, with reporting by Kim Kane Amy Winehouse Photo: Roger Kisby/ Getty Images Salaam Remi was already an established producer before he met a then-unknown singer named Amy Winehouse, having already created hits for the likes of Nas, the Fugees and Ini Kamoze (to name just a few). But from the minute he was introduced to Winehouse in 2002, his life — and career — were forever changed. Because not only did he produce the lion’s share of her recorded work (her 2003 debut Frank and the follow up, 2006’s iconic Back to Black ) but he became a close friend with the mercurial Winehouse too, a confidant who knew her better than most. So when Winehouse died on Saturday in her London home, it was somewhat fitting that Remi was nearby: in town to attend the wedding of the singer’s former manager. In fact, he had planned on stopping by Winehouse’s apartment that day to catch up and discuss the ongoing sessions for her Back to Black follow-up , which the two had been working on. MTV celebrates Amy Winehouse’s music with a special show tonight. Days after Winehouse’s death Remi spoke via telephone with New York’s Power 105.1 DJ Kim Kane about the loss of his dear friend and the status of her new album. Kane was kind enough to share their conversation with MTV News. “We were working on it; it’s not a complete album,” Remi said, debunking reports that her third LP was finished and slated for release. “We had a lot of things going, there are recordings, but first things first, I think. We’re trying to focus on what’s at hand and what her family wants to do. So those reports [that there is finished material] are false.” Read more about Amy Winehouse’s influence on music beyond “Rehab.” Remi also told Kane that despite near-constant speculation about Winehouse’s health, he believed that she was well enough to complete her new album and was actually using the ongoing recording sessions as a sort of therapy, channeling her emotions and frustrations into her songs. “To put it all in a nutshell, Amy loved to sing, to write … that ability never left her,” he said. “She was very good at channeling her emotions into lyrics, and then being able to sing them. She was in a place to go forward and make it happen. … The way that Amy and I always created was, she would write and we would toss ideas around.” And though details surrounding Winehouse’s death remain murky, Remi said that he’s trying very hard to block out the near-constant media coverage of her passing and focus instead on the private moments the two shared in the studio. Those moments revealed the artist few ever knew: opinionated, funny and, above all else, caring. “Amy had strong opinions on everything. …. She was very opinionated about what she liked. At the end, she was a real person,” he said. “She had a huge heart. We’d be working for hours and she would have everybody in the room snickering. She always had a joke. You could hear a lot of that in her lyrics, she could be sarcastic and she was extremely witty … but more than anything else she was a real person, an individual artist.” Celebrate Amy Winehouse

‘Motivation’ singer says she admires ‘artists like Chris Brown and Rihanna, who don’t mind putting it all on their album.’ By Jocelyn Vena Kelly Rowland Photo: Jason LaVeris/ FilmMagic Kelly Rowland is proudly declaring Here I Am on her new album, which dropped Tuesday (July 26). And while she’s always been a soulful R&B diva, the past few years, she’s carved out a place for herself among the dancing queens of the world. And, she said, there’s room for both of those characters on this latest release. “The personalities aren’t really different,” she explained to MTV News. “I think what I’ve grown to know about my voice is, just having a voice, period, as a woman, you mean business, period — whether that’s making people dance or that’s making people feel in an emotional way or whatever it might be when it comes to R&B. “I think that R&B, of course, is where I’m deeply rooted, period,” she continued. “I’ll never go anywhere. I just happened to try something out [dance], and it worked, and that’s just the part of it. And I think that’s what I admire about artists like Chris Brown and Rihanna, who don’t mind putting it all on their album. Who cares? It’s music, and they’re making it: great music. And I’m proud of that, that we do have a generation that is just making great music, period.” With features from the likes of “Motivation” collaborator Lil Wayne , Big Sean and Rico Love, to name a few, Rowland also got production help from heavy hitters such as Tricky Stewart, Jim Jonsin, David Guetta, RedOne and Rodney Jerkins. “Above anything, I got to work with creative people. We were in the same pocket sonically,” she explained. “And I got the chance to go back in with Rodney Jerkins, and we were just in a pocket together that … blew me away, period. And with Red[One] too, everybody. It was so much fun. I’m so happy with the project.” This album, for Rowland, was a balance of working with a new crop of producers and a familiar set of people. That combination helped her shape the many sides of herself. “Red didn’t meet me, but he was like, ‘I don’t think you are singing at your full capacity,’ ” she recalled. “We got into the studio, and when we finished the two records that we did together, I just looked at him and was like, ‘You get it?’ He gets it. “And Rodney’s been knowing me since I was 17 years old,” she continued. “Rodney comes into the studio, and he’s like, ‘Wait a minute: What’s happening [with your voice]?’ It’s really interesting how the two are not that far off, but they’re both great ears.” Share your review of Kelly Rowland’s new album in the comments below.
