Kelly Rowland Responds To Kanye West’s ‘Power’ Lyric

‘To hear him say that, I was just kinda blown away,’ Rowland says. By Mawuse Ziegbe Kelly Rowland Photo: Evan Agostini/ Getty Images As a founding member of one of the biggest girl groups ever, Destiny’s Child, one would think that Kelly Rowland is used to getting attention. However, a lyric in Kanye West’s single “Power” has brought the Grammy-winning star even more shine than she bargained for. “The system broken, the schools closed, the prisons open/ We ain’t got nothin’ to lose, Motha—-er, we rollin’/ Huh? Motha—-er, we rollin’/ With some light-skinned girls and some Kelly Rowlands,” ‘Ye spits on the track. In an interview with Complex.com , the R&B diva said the line from the popular song has even changed how her pals approach her. “My friends sometimes greet me like that now, which is really weird,” Rowland giggled, after reciting the lyric her homegirls apparently start spitting when they meet up with the singer. As far as West, Rowland said she was taken aback by the shout-out, which pegs her as a standard of beauty. “To hear him say that, I was just kinda blown away. Dang, no pressure, Kanye,” Rowland quipped. Of course, ‘Ye isn’t the first lyricist to look to Rowland to lend some sizzle to a project. The singer appeared in 50 Cent’s 2009 video “Baby by Me” as a devoted, yet still crazy glamorous, housewife raising a brood of mini 50s. Before the video dropped, Fif explained to MTV News that he coaxed Rowland into appearing in the clip at the last minute because he felt she brought the star power he needed for the Before I Self Destruct visual. “Kelly was getting ready to fly back to Miami. I was lucky enough to catch her. I kinda begged my way into her doing it,” 50 said. “I didn’t want to do the normal video situation, where you have the vixen or somebody no one knows from anywhere. I think it intensifies the whole song.” Do you have a favorite line from Kanye West’s “Power”? Let us know in the comments! Related Artists Kelly Rowland Kanye West

Lyfe Jennings Reportedly Sentenced To Three Years In Jail

R&B singer was arrested in 2008 for fleeing the scene after a dispute with the mother of his child. By Mawuse Ziegbe Lyfe Jennings Photo: Bennett Raglin/ WireImage R&B singer Lyfe Jennings is heading to jail for three years, according to reports. The artist was due to perform in Seattle on Tuesday, but the show was abruptly canceled before Jennings was sentenced to three and a half years in Atlanta on Wednesday (September 22), according to Seattle Weekly. The sentence stems from an altercation Jennings had with the mother of his child in 2008 . The singer kicked down the door of a house in Smyrna, Georgia, in an attempt to find Joy Pound and later fired a gun outside. Smyrna police saw a red 2005 Corvette fleeing the scene, and Jennings was caught after a high-speed chase that ended when the singer smashed the vehicle. He refused a sobriety test. Jennings was handed misdemeanor charges of criminal trespass, discharging a firearm near a public highway and refusal to take a DUI test, in addition to two felony counts of attempting to elude an officer and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. Jennings’ label offered no comment by press time. On Tuesday, Jennings posted a vague message on his Twitter account announcing he would no longer be writing on the micro-blogging site. “This will be my last post. To everyone who gave me a chance I am forever in your debt. I have had a fabulous career because of you. All I can say in parting is that I have been honest with yaw. I didn’t sugarcoat a word didn’t hold back a single sylible of my life from yaw,” Jennings said. “I’ve lived a hundred lives in these 6 yrs so I not only won’t, I don’t have the right to complain. I would like to think that I’ve changed lives by changing my own, tho I can’t be sure. But one thing I am sure of is God gives and takes away in measure. He is fair, just and forever. Amen from aman… Smile, it’s contageous:)” Jennings was sentenced to 10 years for felony arson before gaining acclaim after his wins at the famed amateur night at New York’s Apollo Theater. His 2004 debut, Lyfe 268-192, went platinum, and he’s known for hits like “S.E.X.” and “Never Never Land.” He released his latest LP, I Still Believe, in August, a project he dubbed his “final” album. In a press release for the album, Jennings explained that the title reflects his resilience despite his personal trials. “It’s tragic; I think I have a horribly charmed life,” Jennings said. “But I think God puts me through stuff and keeps me there so I can talk about it.” Related Artists Lyfe Jennings

‘Glee’ Star Reveals Britney Spears Episode Details

‘I was just staring at her at one point and thinking, ‘This is just so frickin’ awesome,’ ‘ Heather Morris says. By James Dinh Heather Morris Photo: Jon Kopaloff/ Getty Images Britney Spears has always had her share of doubters, but in an upcoming episode that plays homage to the singer, the students of William McKinley High will have her back as they fight for the pop princess, according to castmember Heather Morris. In an interview with Australian magazine TV Week, the actress dished about the plotline surrounding next week’s “Britney/Brittany” episode and what it was like working with the pop icon. “Through a special substance, I go under and have a couple of dream sequences — not only myself, but with Santana [Naya Rivera],” Morris explained. “A lot of it has to do with Will [Matthew Morrison] not allowing us to perform Britney Spears songs, because he doesn’t agree with what kind of entertainer she is, so it’s our fight to do Britney. But it’s not just us doing Britney in show choir; there are other sequences — it’s our homage to her.” In the episode, which airs next Tuesday, viewers might catch a rendition of Spears’ 2003 hit collabo with Madonna “Me Against the Music.” Last month, the singer tweeted on-set photos of her and Morris re-enacting a scene from the girl-on-girl clip. Aside from the Madonna collaboration, ” … Baby One More Time” and “Toxic” are also reported to be part of the episode. Morris told TV Week she wasn’t nervous to work with the pop star since it wasn’t her first encounter with Spears. “It wasn’t really nerve-racking, because I’ve met her before and I wasn’t really overwhelmed by who she is,” she admitted. “But the idea of what she has given us for the show and, for me, getting to dance with her and play with her on set, I was just staring at her at one point and thinking, ‘This is just so frickin’ awesome.’ ” While show creator Ryan Murphy has already revealed his admiration for the singer, Morris’ idolization might be a bit more personal. “She was my idol from, like, age 12 to 16,” she told the magazine. “I sang to her [songs] in my living room and danced to her — I learned all her moves. And I had my talent shows and I lip-synched to her. I just kept flashing back to growing up and being obsessed with her.” The 23-year-old actress might not have been fazed by Spears’ presence, but that wasn’t the case for everyone on set. “It was literally like the president had come,” Murphy previously said . “We all had to wear wristbands. I couldn’t get into my own sets at one point, which I thought was hilarious.” Mr. Schuester isn’t the only character worried that Spears’ music will wreak havoc on the halls of McKinley High. “Sue Sylvester is of the opinion that Britney Spears is basically the anti-Christ,” Jane Lynch told TV Week of her character. “How does she put it? ‘A pop-culture provocateur and responsible for every out-of-control impulse ever created.’ So she fears that if Britney Spears’ music is played, it will create a sex riot — and it does.” Are you excited for the Britney takeover on “Glee” next week? ‘Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell’ Repeal Stalled By Senate Vote

Despite Lady Gaga support, bill fails to pass. By Gil Kaufman Photo: Chris Hondros/ Getty Images Despite a last-minute push at a Monday rally in Maine and weeks of very public advocacy from Lady Gaga in favor of repealing the U.S. military’s “don’t ask, don’t tell” policy barring gay and lesbian soldiers from openly serving in the armed forces, Senate Democrats were unable to get enough votes to begin debate Tuesday (September 21). Gaga rushed to Maine on Monday in an attempt to convince the state’s two swing-vote Republican senators, Olympia Snowe and Susan Collins, to support repeal of “don’t ask, don’t tell.” But when the vote came to the floor Tuesday to begin debate on the massive defense spending bill, which includes a repeal of the policy, the Democratic majority fell short of the 60 votes needed to bring the bill to debate, losing out 56-43. The organization Gaga worked with to spearhead her two-week campaign to get the discussion started, Servicemembers Legal Defense Network, issued a statement following the vote. “Today’s Senate vote was a frustrating blow to repeal this horrible law,” said Army veteran Aubrey Sarvis, executive director of SLDN, a national organization dedicated to ending “don’t ask, don’t tell.” “We lost because of the political maneuvering dictated by the mid-term elections. Let’s be clear: Opponents to repealing ‘Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell’ did not have the votes to strike those provisions from the bill. Instead, they had the votes for delay. Time is the enemy here.” The vote was done in thanks to a filibuster by Republican Senator and Vietnam veteran John McCain, who attempted to block the vote to begin debate on the National Defense Authorization Act over Republican claims that the Democrats were attempting to stifle debate on the bill and not allow the minority party to offer amendments to the massive spending package for the military. President Obama has long promised a repeal of the Clinton-era legislation, and the House has already passed a version of the spending bill that included the reversal of “don’t ask, don’t tell.” But with the measure stalled in the Senate, hopes of passage have faded significantly. With the midterm elections less than six weeks away and Republicans expected to make gains in both the House and Senate, possibly even taking over leadership of one or both bodies, supporters of repeal were looking at Tuesday’s vote as their last, best chance for passage this year. “We now have no choice but to look to the lame duck session where we’ll have a slim shot,” Sarvis said of the already-packed legislative session following the November midterm elections. “The Senate absolutely must schedule a vote in December when cooler heads and common sense are more likely to prevail once mid-term elections are behind us.” Gaga’s very public efforts helped put the issue on front pages and screens from coast to coast, but CNN reported that both Collins and Snowe said the singer’s appearance at Monday’s rally in Maine had no effect on their crucial votes. Collins, in fact, supported the repeal but told the network she felt she had to stay in line with her colleagues and vote against debate for procedural reasons. Can Audrina Patridge Or The Situation Win ‘Dancing With The Stars’?

Pundits praise ‘Jersey Shore’ star’s ‘over-the-top personality’ and ‘cachet.’ By Jocelyn Vena Tony Dovolani and Audrina Patridge Photo: ABC This season of “Dancing With the Stars” contains a battle between two of MTV’s most recognizable faces: “Jersey Shore” star the Situation and “Hills” star Audrina Patridge . One week in, Audrina has fared better in the score department, racking up a 19 to the Situation’s 15 . But since it’s still early in the competition, it’s anybody’s game — and some pop-culture experts are placing their bets on the man who made “GTL” a household term. “Audrina was clearly the better dancer last night and got hosed with the scores. She was definitely hurt going first. It’s a tough call on the Sitch right now because he only practiced for five days, but I think he can get better,” explained Joyce Eng, staff editor at TVGuide.com. “I think his cachet can get him through a few rounds, but he needs to really pick it up to go far.” Personality is more of a factor than dancing skill, according to David Caplan, an entertainment journalist who has worked at celeb magazines like People and Star . And, he says, that might help the Situation in the end. “The Situation may have a better chance than Audrina since he is a fan favorite,” he said. “He’s much more recognizable. He’s sexy. He’s hunky. He’s on a show right now that’s hot. With Audrina, you know her time as a ‘Hills’ star is waning now.” Us Weekly reporter Brad Witter isn’t ready to give anyone the crown yet. “It’s hard to say. I think that the Situation has the bigger personality and America definitely responds to that. Look at Cloris Leachman; America kept her on because of her personality. The Situation had five days to rehearse and he compensated for it with his over-the-top personality. He’s an entertainer. “I think, obviously, Audrina, she showed that she was the better dancer,” he added. “But she falls a little flat sometimes. I think she’s taking it very seriously, but she’s kind of dull.” Eng noted that the reality-TV backgrounds of the Situation and Audrina make their roads to the top a little tough. “It’s difficult to gauge reality stars’ fanbases. For every person who’s a fan, there are probably five more people who hate them or their show. They’re not as universally beloved as athletes, actors or stars — like Jennifer [Grey] and Florence [Henderson], who are going to have fans in their corner no matter what,” she said. “The first few weeks will be telling for [the Situation and Audrina], especially if either of them land in the bottom two or three.” Are you pulling for either of the MTV celebs on “Dancing With the Stars”? Did Lady Gaga Have Any Impact On ‘Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell’ Vote?

In spite of DADT vote stalling in Senate, supporters of repeal say Gaga’s tireless advocacy has garnered issue global recognition. By Gil Kaufman Lady Gaga speaks in in Portland, Maine on Monday Photo: Cliff Kucine/ Getty Images There are many different ways for celebrities to leverage their notoriety to help a cause. They can play a concert, write a check, make a PSA or, as in the case of actor Sean Penn, live in a meager tent in an earthquake-ravaged country for six months and run their own relief organization. But few stars have given as much in as short a time as Lady Gaga has to the cause of repealing the U.S. military’s “don’t ask, don’t tell” policy. “The reality is that on Saturday night we were looking at what we could do on Monday, knowing that even if we sent out an alert to our base of 80,000 supporters, we’d be talking to the same people,” said Trevor Thomas, spokesperson for the Servicemembers Legal Defense Network, a national organization dedicated to ending DADT. “We wanted to expand our reach and reach more people nationally and, more than anything, the two swing senators [in Maine] who could give us a chance.” The SLDN quickly hatched a plan to organize a rally in Maine on Monday in an attempt to get swing-vote Republican Senators Olympia Snowe and Susan Collins to possibly change their votes on the repeal. That’s where Lady Gaga came in. The pop icon had walked the white carpet at the VMAs with four SLDN members, shouted them out from the stage, turned her website over to the issue and posted public video pleas about the issue. When word came of this last-minute appeal, once again, she stepped up. According to Thomas, the singer finished a show in Raleigh, North Carolina, on Sunday night, hopped on a bus and took a 15-hour ride to Maine, personally writing her address on the way. “The dedication from her was amazing,” he said. “She wrote the speech, did the research and talked to people, and it did exactly what we need to do — highlight the issue to young people and others who might not have heard about this cause. But most importantly, we did it in this key area we needed it in.” The Gaga speech garnered massive local and national coverage for the issue, with stories in the Denver Post, USA Today and The New York Times, among others. “You can work for months to place one story in the Times’ print section, and even if politics prevail and we lose the vote, more people know about the DADT repeal than did yesterday,” Thomas said. And while Gaga’s mighty push to lock in the necessary votes didn’t save the day when the crucial Senate vote took place on Tuesday (September 21), Thomas said her help undoubtedly had a huge impact and put a global spotlight on the policy. From the night Gaga first spoke out on the repeal at the 2010 VMAs and redirected traffic from her official website to the SLDN site until 8 a.m. on Tuesday morning, Thomas said, 314,446 people clicked to the “take action” tab, which sent them to a site listing the phone numbers where U.S. senators could be reached about the vote. While it’s unknown how many of those clicks turned into actual phone calls, Thomas said he was “100 percent sure” that the site would not have gotten nearly that many visits without Gaga’s efforts. The total number of visitors was nearly four times the amount of supporters SLDN had gathered pre-Gaga, but Thomas pointed out an even more impressive number. During that same two-week period, the pages on the SLDN website with background information on DADT got 520,298 page views. In contrast, during the first two weeks of the month, the site had 13,000 visitors and 30,000 page views. “There are many people who are high-profile who speak out in a positive manner on LGBT issues,” Thomas said. “But the difference here is she asked, ‘What can I do?’ at a time when it was critically important for the passage of our bill. Not only did she say that, but she asked how and when to do it. When you look at the past couple of weeks, you see not just strategic tweets but the video address that hit days before the critical vote and which was driving many calls to the Senate switchboard. I don’t know of many entertainers who at the critical moment for a bill would stop their website and direct it to a ‘take action’ page for a relatively small group trying to push an issue crucially important to servicemembers and those who support them.” Before Tuesday’s vote, Jim Manley, a spokesman for Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid — the Nevada senator exchanged DADT-related tweets last week with Gaga — said the Democratic boss welcomed Mother Monster’s advocacy. “We appreciate the support of Lady Gaga and her supporters,” Manley said. “Sometimes that can have an impact, especially when you are as apparently committed as she is to the cause.” Even with all of Gaga’s work, CNN reported that both Collins and Snowe said Gaga’s appearance at Monday’s rally in Maine had no effect on their crucial votes; the final 56-43 tally helped ensure that the Senate would not open a DADT repeal discussion during its current session. Collins, in fact, supported the repeal, but told the network she felt she had to stay in line with her colleagues and vote against debate for procedural reasons.
