Yelawolf Says Gucci Mane Made ‘Wanna Party’ ‘Incredible’

By Steven Roberts Yelawolf Photo: MTV News When Yelawolf’s “Wanna Party,” featuring Gucci Mane dropped, something about it made sense. Maybe it was that there were so many parallels between the rappers’ careers. Gucci proudly reps East Atlanta, but he and Yela are both Alabama-born. Both have grinded for years on the underground and the two rappers aren’t afraid to experiment with music. It turns out that it’s no coincidence that the track just sounds right: They clicked when it came time to record the song. “It was dope. With as many features as I’ve done, I have yet to work with the artist in the studio, with all of them except for Travis [Barker],” Yela said. “Actually bringing [Gucci] to the studio and getting in the booth with him on some real old-school hip-hop sh–, sharing one mic, it was dope, man. That’s the best vibe to me. Being that he’s from Alabama just makes it extra special.” Yela said Gucci was perfect for the record. While he has collaborated with the likes of Gucci, Big Boi and Raekwon, he said that he and his team only reached out to the artist they thought would make the best fit. “We go get Raekwon for ‘I Wish,’ because we felt like Rae fit ‘I Wish.’ We don’t reach out and go get features based on who they are, how big they are,” Yela explained. “We got Gucci because Gucci is dope. We’re huge fans and he made the record incredible.” He said that the two already shot a video for “Wanna Party” directed by Motion Family. It will have the same eerie vibe as his video for “Pop the Trunk.” But instead of trunks popping to reveal loaded shotguns, this time it’s just a sweaty, country-ass party. “We came up with the concept like ‘Let’s just roll tape. Let’s throw a crazy house-party and just roll tape.’ And that’s what we did. We called everybody we knew. Got kegs, got a bunch of beer, a bunch of DJs, some crazy white girls for the ‘go white girl’ line. They did go crazy by the way.” “Wanna Party” is the first single from Yelawolf’s major label debut, Trunk Muzik: 0 to 60, which is set to drop September 4. Yela called the LP a continuation of his last mixtape, Trunk Muzik, with 808s, grooves and music for your trunk speakers. The album will feature five fan-favorite tracks from the tape along with seven new tracks, including “Billy Crystal Meth,” produced by Jim Jonsin. Drake Channels Frank Sinatra In VMA Promo

Donning a dapper suit, complete with a gentlemanly pocket square, the singer and rapper is surrounded by midcentury glamour as he takes the mic for a commercial touting his VMA appearance . The Toronto lyricist makes a dramatic entrance under a brightly lit “Drake” marquee and steps onto a stage populated by a sprawling big band sporting white jackets. “I get to channel my inner [Frank] Sinatra,” Drizzy — who is up for Moonmen for Best Hip-Hop Video and Best Male Video — said on the set. “In the acting world, you gotta have reference points. I like to get into characters.” Sinatra isn’t the only legend that influences Drake’s gentlemanly style in the promo. The “Degrassi” actor-turned-chart-topping MC also looked to Denzel Washington’s troubled trumpeter in Spike Lee’s 1990 flick “Mo’ Better Blues.” ” ‘Mo’ Better Blues’ is like one of my favorite movies of all time. This reminds me of Denzel, who played a character [called] Bleek Gilliam,” Drake explained. “I’m trying to channel that today.” Drake may have mined the mannerisms of a pair of jazzy icons for the promo, but the period set and crew of extras donning retro looks also helped the MC get in character. “There’s a ’50s theme. Devoted Beliebers are counting down to the moment they can check out Justin Bieber’s 3-D movie . Director Jon Chu promises fans will get an in-depth look at what it’s like to be the VMA-nominated singer . “Well, we’re working on it right now. We’ve been touring with him, so we’ve been working on it,” Chu (“Step Up 3D”) told MTV News about the project. “The movie comes out in five months, so we’re deep in it. It’s been fun to get to know Justin. He’s a really cool guy and we’re gonna make a really fun movie.” Those who have yet to be infected with Bieber Fever should take note: This movie is for fans and non-fans alike, according to Chu. “[It’s] a movie for his fans, a movie for people who don’t know him, and we’re gonna tell the underdog story of where he came from,” he explained. “Because it’s a really fascinating story and it has a lot to do with our sort of digital lifestyle now. He was able to do what corporations try to do now when they use YouTube and they don’t even know what to do with it yet. It’s a pretty cool story for our time.” As for the film’s format, Chu explained that it will be a mixture of concert footage and some documentary-style scenes. “There’s not going to be acted-out scenes and I can’t talk about the rest. It’s not your typical concert film and it’s not going to be a biopic … but it is about his life. I think it’s more of a documentary. We’re going to figure it out as we go,” he said. As for how much of it will be in 3-D, he said, “You’ll have to see it. We’re figuring that out now.” Chu had more praise for Bieber, telling us the singer has real staying power, as evidenced by artists like Kanye West seeking him out for collaborations. “He … isn’t a flash in the pan,” Chu said. “He has legitimate talent and I think other artists recognize that.” What part of Justin’s biography do you most want to see played out in 3-D? For instance, both have extremely dedicated fans, complete with playful nicknames — “Twi-hards,” “Be-liebers.” Both groups are prone to burst into ear-piercing screams and heavily influence awards-show voting. So when MTV News recently caught up with “Breaking Dawn” star Nikki Reed , we asked whether she had any special insight into Bieber Fever, having experienced the kind of fan-demonium he has. “I didn’t really understand that for a while, and I finally get it,” she said about the singer while promoting her new flick “Last Day of Summer.” Reed said her “a-ha” moment came when she stumbled upon vintage Bieber videos online, which show the singer at 6 years old, playing guitar on the side of the road. “The excitement and passion in his eyes and his voice, this little tiny kid holding this big huge guitar … he’s singing, his voice penetrates into the world,” Reed recalled. “People across the street were listening, it’s truly incredible. He’s a talented kid.” The “Twilight” actress added that while she might not personally fit into his demographic, she has slowly come to realize the power of Bieber. “He’s got a very specific look and style thing that he’s going for. Fantasia’s Alleged Boyfriend Antwaun Cook Defends Singer

By Mawuse Ziegbe Fantasia Photo: Getty Images Many fans have suggested that Fantasia Barrino is in the wrong for allegedly taking up with a married man. However, the married man in question, Antwaun Cook, says the singer is not responsible for breaking up his relationship. “He knew Fantasia Barrino but the failure of his marriage can in no way be blamed on anyone except the two people that were a part of the union — Paula and Antwaun,” Cook’s lawyer, Nicole Sodoma, said in a statement on Wednesday (August 18). Sodoma also says that Cook and his wife have been separated for about a year. “Paula and Antwaun married in 2005. They expected their marriage to stand the test of time,” Sodoma said in the statement. “Unfortunately, like many marriages, it did not turn out as planned. In late summer 2009, after years of discussion, the parties separated with the intention of no longer being married.” Last week, Barrino was hospitalized following an apparent suicide attempt. The season-three “American Idol” winner suffered a drug overdose after ingesting a combination of aspirin and a sleep aid. Rumors abounded that the singer’s alleged relationship with Cook was a factor in her apparent attempt to take her own life. The incident occurred roughly a week after Cook’s wife, Paula, filed court documents alleging that her spouse and Barrino engaged in a “covert adulterous affair” and created a sex tape together . Despite recovering from her overdose and weathering criticism from fans about her alleged relationship with Cook, Barrino is already back to promoting her new album . The “Bittersweet” singer has several scheduled television appearances in the next few weeks as she builds buzz for the release for her third album, Back to Me, which is set to drop on August 24. Are Weezer Planning A Pinkerton Tour?

Because they’re planning to launch a tour in support of the reissue of Pinkerton, their willfully difficult sophomore album that sputtered out of the gate but has since gone on to be regarded as a classic and a touchstone of so-called “second wave” emo. That’s according to Weezer guitarist Brian Bell, who gave an interview this past weekend at the Mile High Music Festival in Colorado, saying the band were kicking around the idea of doing a tour where they’ll play Pinkerton in its entirety. “We … have a reissue of Pinkerton coming out with new packaging,” he said. “And, I’m praying, a Pinkerton tour, where we’ll play all the songs on [the album] soon.” That’s good news for fans of Weezer’s classic lineup — Rivers Cuomo, Bell, Patrick Wilson and bassist Sharp, who left the group in 1998 and has since released solo albums and music with the Rentals — though, at the moment, the idea of doing a Pinkerton tour might just be that: an idea. When contacted by MTV News, a spokesperson for Weezer had no comment about Bell’s interview, and though Amazon lists an October 5 release date for the reissue of Pinkerton, a spokesperson for Geffen Records — the band’s former home and the label that will apparently be putting the album out — could not be reached for comment. In the meantime, Weezer are gearing up for the September 14 release of Hurley, their in-no-way-based-on-“Lost” album that just so happens to feature “Lost” actor Jorge Garcia on the cover . Trey Songz’s ‘Bottoms Up’ Video Premieres

By Jayson Rodriguez Trey Songz in the video for “Bottoms Up” Photo: Atlantic Records Trey Songz premiered the first video from his forthcoming album Pleasure, Pain & Pleasure on BET’s 106 & Park Tuesday night, the up-tempo “Bottoms Up,” featuring Nicki Minaj . The clip was directed by Anthony Mandler (Jay-Z, Rihanna, Drake) and shows the singer in a funhouse type of environment. Clad in all black, from his suit to his dark sunglasses, Trey Songz is surrounded by women dancing seductively behind glass walls. Themes of bondage and voyeurism are teased throughout the clip as the singer makes his way around the space, while quick edits and lighting changes create a frenetic vibe. Songz described the video as a tool that “heightens” the energy of the track. ” ‘Bottoms Up,’ I feel, is a very creative video,” he told MTV News earlier this month from the set. “[It’s] different from me or what’s expected from me and anything I’ve shot for that matter. Anthony used a lot of different shooting techniques. I think it heightens whatever it is that the song has already — the drive, the vigor, the club anthem, the energy in the record is definitely heightened in the video.” Nicki Minaj guests both on the song and in the clip, and Songz said the femcee did an “excellent job” contributing to “Bottoms Up.” Minaj spits, “Yelling, all around the world, do you hear me/ Do you like my body, Anna Nicki?/ Rest in peace to Anna Nicole Smith.” Minaj sports a blond wig and snug black bustier in the video. “She definitely comes in and spazzes,” the singer said. “She brings a different energy to the record. Usher, Chris Brown Tease Co-Headlining Tour Online

And according to producer Bryan-Michael Cox, it may just happen. This news comes just weeks after Breezy’s surprise onstage appearance during Usher’s set at Reggae SumFest. Speculation began when Cox revealed during Jermaine Dupri’s “Living the Life” YouTube show that the singers are planning to tour together. “Usher and the boy Chris Brown are going on tour, y’all know that, right?” Cox said. Dupri immediately replied, “They might not know that.” But after the cat was let out of the bag, Cox admitted, “I might’ve just gave y’all some exclusive sh–.” Once word spread that that Usher and Breezy might be planning a co-headlining tour, the trio took to Twitter to respond to the hype. Responding to a fellow songwriter, Cox seemed to backpedal his revelation when he tweeted , “@rchonore86 I was drunk. Lol. Talking crazy. I don’t know for a fact that THAT tour is happening. But it would be dope tho. Lol.” But the R&B heartthrobs kept the idea alive as they asked fans what they think of the possibility of an Usher/Brown tour. “What would you guys say if me and Usher went on tour?” Brown tweeted . An hour later, Usher’s Twitter message read, “If you could see Usher perform live with anyone – who would it be?” Reps for Usher and Brown could not be reached for comment at press time. Earlier this year, Brown’s U.K. tour plans were postponed because the singer was denied a work visa on the grounds that he is guilty of a serious criminal offense.
