Spielberg’s ‘Robopocalypse’ No Longer Nigh, Spring Shoot Postponed

While Lincoln campaigns hard for Oscar gold (and still racks up box office cash), Steven Spielberg has decided not to shoot his sci-fi blockbuster Robopocalypse in the spring as planned, multiple outlets report. The question is, will Spielberg — who notoriously told 60 Minutes he could direct another action movie in his sleep, as evidenced by Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull , zing! — stay onboard in the director’s chair or take up another project in the meantime? Robopocalypse , based on Daniel H. Wilson’s 2011 bestseller about an artificial intelligence-sparked apocalypse, was set to star Anne Hathaway and Chris Hemsworth , with a script by Cabin in the Woods ‘ Drew Goddard. Fox and DreamWorks had already set a release date of April 15, 2014 for the $100 million-plus tentpole. It’s not great news for the adaptation, but is this the end for Robopocalypse ? Here’s Deadline ‘s Mike Fleming as the voice of reason: “All I’m told is that there was no reason to rush Robopocalypse , and if Spielberg waited 12 years to get Lincoln right, this one can wait a big longer.” The robot game’s kind of a crowded field right now, anyway; Guillermo del Toro’s kaiju vs. mecha Pacific Rim is heading for theaters this July 13, and Michael Bay just hired this guy to star opposite Mark Wahlberg in his secondary trilogy-starter Transformers 4 . Steven Spielberg Says He’s ‘No Longer Interested’ In Action Pics

Jaws , Indiana Jones , Jurassic Park – Steven Spielberg has set the bar for the worldwide blockbuster. Sure, he’s taken praise for other genre as well, including his Best Director win for Schindler’s List (and another for Saving Private Ryan five years later). On the cusp of his Lincoln premiere for the closing night of the AFI Fest next month, the wildly successful director-producer-writer said he is “no longer attracted” to action films, even as some are on his plate. CBS’ 60 Minutes spotlighted the director and his latest Oscar-buzzed film, which had a sneak “work-in-progress” screening at the recent New York Film Festival. The filmmaker reiterated what many of those first crowds said about the film, describing it as less action-packed than many of his previous titles. “I knew I could do the action in my sleep at this point in my career,” he said. “In my life, the action doesn’t hold any … it doesn’t attract me any more.” Was that a possible moment of exuberation considering the feature is widely tipped to be a mass contender this awards season? Spielberg, however, is set to direct Sci-Fi thriller Robopocalypse , which is set in the aftermath of a robot uprising and a quick check of his IMDb page has him set to direct a possible Indiana Jones 5 . Also during the segments on the popular long-running Sunday night news program that his latest, about the 16th President of the United States, focusing on the last months of his Administration when he and abolitionists labored to pass the 13th Amendment soon after his re-election on the waning days of the Civil War, was partly inspired by a reconciliation with his father. “[President Lincoln] was the father of the nation in need of repair,” said Spielberg. “And in a sense, the movies I’ve made recently have reflected the positive relationships that my dad and I have enjoyed for 20 [to] 25 years.” “I was an outsider. The kid that played clarinet at band, which I did,” said Spielberg, who shared that he was bullied at school. He dealt with severe anti-Semitic attacks at school and said he denied his Jewishness for “a long time.” While his mother noted during the interview that he and his father were not close, it was in fact his dad who gave him something that would change his life – a camera. Though his parents later divorced when his mother left after falling for her husband’s friend, Spielberg didn’t know for years the circumstances of their break-up. He idolized his mother and used his sentiment, channeling it to the maternal character Dee Wallace in E.T. In Schindler’s List , Spielberg said, “I did everything I needed to do to tell the story the way I thought the story should be told, to give it as much integrity as I could, never expecting it to make a dollar. The film went on to deliver a worldwide box office haul of $321million and win best picture and director Oscars at the 1994 Academy Awards.” It was his turn at facing down the anti-Semitism he felt growing up. In his latest, starring Daniel Day-Lewis, Spielberg researched for the topic for 12 years. “I think the film is very relevant to today. It’s about leadership. And it’s about telling the truth. I think there was a sense of darkness for him…He had to end slavery and abolish the war. And there was darkness in his personal life.” [ Sources: The Guardian , CBS 60 Minutes ]

Samuel L. Jackson Goes For Prose In New Pro-Obama Video, Wake The F*** Up

Full disclosure right off the bat here, some die-hard Romney fans and those with hyper-sensitivity to the F-Bomb and haters of politics generally may not want to proceed, so if you do, go at your own peril. A tidy little vid starring Barack supporter-extraordinaire Samuel L. Jackson has hit the internet, and though a tad longer than the typical 30 second political spot flooding the airwaves in this election season, it is quite a bit more clever and funnier – though it helps if you’re a supporter of the incumbent, naturally. And while it is unabashedly supportive of Obama, the prez does not come in and say he “supports this message” like in most other political ads. In this version, Jackson invades a home of a quiet suburban family of lackadaisical Obama ’08 supporters to tell them to, “Wake the F**** Up.” The three-minute, forty-second video is sponsored by the Jewish Council for Education and Research and is a riff on a reading the Oscar-nominated actor did last year of a satirical “children’s book” called Go the F*** to Sleep , a charming little diddy that went viral. The book’s author, Adam Mansbach also wrote the script for the pro-Obama version of the story, which opens with a young girl who lies awake in her bed fretting that her complacent family will sleep the election away, when just four years ago they were taking to the streets. The video premiered on Yahoo! Little Suzie gets out of bed, but not far from sight is her political ally in-waiting with political rhymes and a final “Wake the F*** Up” as she traipses through her house encountering her listless family members. First off, she goes to her parents who are falling asleep watching TV in the living room. And like an angel, Jackson appears with a riddle urging little Suzie’s parents to get involved. Next she heads into her older brother’s room, who is sitting with his feet up on his desk. Suzie blasts her brother saying that the election is about their future and recalls how he was on the front lines in ’08. Her brother replies that all politicians are “the same” and like magic again, Jackson appears giving a friendly warning that goes something like this: “They’re all the same? Please! Obama’s sent SEALS to Bin Laden’s place, Romney sent jobs overseas. And how about that student loan overhaul? It’s going to save you thousands of bucks. Mitt will cut that sh** in a second. Hey dude, Wake the F*** Up!” Next she heads to her older sister’s room with more prose about planned parenthood etc., Jackson appears, gives his two cents with another riddle and another, “Wake the F*** Up!” And finally, it’s off to grandma and grandpa’s room who are, incidentally, proving that older folks do have good times, until they’re interrupted by you know who… Medicare is the big theme here, naturally, and one more “Wake the F*** Up!” [Source: Yahoo! Ambitious Cloud Atlas and Lana Wachowski Debut With First Trailer and Images

October’s Cloud Atlas is as dense and ambitious as it sounds from what I hear, and the newly unveiled five-minute trailer is almost as confounding as it is beautiful to look at. But regardless of how vaguely The Fountain -ish the nested story feels — jumping through time and various incarnations of cast mates (including Tom Hanks, Halle Berry, and Jim Sturgess) as they repeat life in six different eras from the 19th century Pacific to the post-apocalyptic future — the trio of directors at the helm, including Lana Wachowski in her first post-Larry feature credit, should make things very interesting. Fittingly, Cloud Atlas explores themes like rebirth and transformation, so in a way the adaptation of David Mitchell’s award-winning novel feels like a perfect project for Lana’s debut. (She directs alongside brother Andy and Tom Tykwer.) One of the storylines involves a seafarer, a futuristic clone, and another Tom Hanks in the wild; all of them, and all of us, are connected, according to the trailer. But Tykwer and the Wachowskis know theirs is a tough movie to sell, so they put together an adorable director’s commentary to introduce their trailer: “I think it started as a joke,” the trio begin, finishing each others’ sentences. “‘Why don’t we make a movie together?’ But it became this ongoing fantasy. It had to be something we’d never seen before, but it had to remind us of the kind of movies we watched over and over, the kind of movies that made us want to watch movies. Big screen movies! Massive in scope! But relevant to a normal life, to human beings. It would have drama and comedy. Romance! But it had to be political, philosophical. Lots of action, set in the past and the future, every genre.” Verdict: Iiiiinteresting . Still a tough sell for most audiences, but interesting … gorgeous imagery, a somewhat unwieldy trailer, but Lana and Tom and Andy won me over with their giggly enthusiasm. Meanwhile, new images from the film have debuted, showing more of the cast and their divergent (but connected, somehow) stories. Click on the image below for more and leave your impressions below.

REVIEW: Ruby Sparks Blows Up Manic Pixie Dream Girl Myth

The title character of  Ruby Sparks is a 26-year-old painter from Dayton, Ohio played by Zoe Kazan, who also wrote the film’s screenplay, She has bangs and wears brightly colored tights. Her first crushes were on John Lennon and Humphrey Bogart. She loves to cook, can’t drive and doesn’t own a computer. Her problems, as someone points out, are all of the “endearing” variety. She’s also entirely the invention of Calvin Weir-Fields (Paul Dano), a blocked author who wrote a hit novel at age 19 and 10 years later, has yet to follow it up. Living a solitary life in Los Angeles, he’s advised by his shrink Dr. Rosenthal (Elliott Gould) to write about meeting someone while out walking his dog, Scotty. Ruby first appears to Calvin in his sleep, and soon he’s fleshing her character out on his typewriter. For the first time in ages, words come to him easily as he tells the story of how his literal dream girl meets and ends up with a guy who’s a lot like him. Directed by  Little Miss Sunshine ‘s team of Jonathan Dayton and Valerie Faris,  Ruby Sparks isn’t the exercise in stevia-dusted whimsy that it sounds like, especially once a flesh-and-blood Ruby suddenly materializes — exactly as Calvin wrote her — with no awareness that she began as a fictional literary character. This touch of movie magic is actually a way for the filmmakers to tartly examine the cinematic trope of the manic pixie dream girl and the larger problems inherent in searching for someone who’s perfect for you. Ruby is perfect for Calvin because he wrote her to be that way.  She’s not your stereotypical pneumatic blond lust object because while sex is certainly part of the relationship Calvin is looking for, control and security are more important. She’s adorable but vulnerable because she’s been treated badly. She’s eager to please, and though Calvin is nothing like the other men she’s dated, she falls in love with him instantly and even promises him, “I will never get sick of you.” As Calvin’s older, married brother Harry (Chris Messina) points out when reading his sibling’s description of Ruby before she ever manages her transition into the physical world, “you haven’t written a person, you’ve written a girl.” And Kazan has written a portrait of a self-pitying, self-protective creative type that becomes so progressively biting that the film’s hopeful epilogue doesn’t quite fly. We learn more about Calvin as he initially freaks out about Ruby’s presence — he thinks he’s going nuts until he realizes other people can see her — but then gratefully comes to accept it. In ebullient montages, the pair goes to an arcade and out dancing. They settle into a life together. Calvin and his brother figure out early on that Ruby is a malleable creation. Calvin can dictate his dream girl’s behavior by continuing to write about her. At first, he vows not to play God and locks up his work in a drawer, but Ruby starts to chafe at being Calvin’s sole companion and at being expected to support his self-centered behavior. His treatment of Ruby grows crueler and as we meet his ex-girlfriend Lila ( True Blood ‘s Deborah Ann Woll) and realize that his account of their breakup is seriously slanted. Ruby starts building a life away from Calvin, and soon he’s pulling out paper and trying to fix her problems with him (instead of himself). Dayton and Faris have created a very grounded L.A. for this not-so-grounded story. They make notable use of the all-white bungalow in which Calvin spends most of his days sitting by the backyard pool . Dano is very good at morphing from the shaggy, appealing literary genius he appears to be at the film’s outset into a troubled, not-so-nice guy who comes sharply into focus at film’s end. After all, Ruby Sparks  is  really about Calvin. Ruby is simply a mirror — which is why the ending strikes the only real false note of the movie. Calvin gets a dose of much-needed self-awareness and  what feels like the wrong sort of chance at redemption. As a whole, however, Ruby Sparks lands like a punch.  It’s a smart counter-jab to the many movies out there that put forth the myth that the world is full of quirky angels in ballet flats who are just waiting for some morose protagonist to come along in need of their love.  It’s as much of a fantasy as Kelly LeBrock emerging from a teenager’s PC. Real people have problems that can’t be dismissed with a sweeping sentence on a page — and real relationships involve compromise and dealing with those problems, not holding out for someone who indulges your every foible and asks nothing in return. My name is Emma and I live in Copenhagen, Denmark (Europe, Scandinavia) and on May 30th 2012, my dream came true. Two weeks before, I entered this big competetion in Denmark to see Justin in Oslo, Norway . My mom called when I was on my way back from school. I freaked out and started screaming, I couldnt believe it. I won a ticket to his concert as V.I.P with a meet & greet. We flew from Denmark at 10:15 am in the morning and waited the entire day to meet him. Oslo was going crazy. I’ve never seen anything like that. The police had to hold a lot of people back and when we finally came in, after waiting for hours, they canceled my meet & greet for Justin’s safety! Literally just 2 minutes before we would be seeing him. I was heartbroken. Everyone was crying exept one. I was crying for 5 hours and when we were about to go to the concert, everyone was just screaming and going crazy. Once I got in, it was AMAZING! I was so close to him. I recorded him all the time and took pictures. Even though the meet & greet got canceled, I think it was an amazing day. I will never forget it. Thank you Justin. Everyone who’s reading this – Never say never, because ONE DAY you’ll meet him or see him live. I did and I never thought it would happen. – @DKBieberGomez See the original post here: My name is Emma and I live in Copenhagen, Denmark (Europe,…
