Sean Garrett Talks Finalizing Deal With Lil Wayne, New Mixtape

‘Wayne embraced me with open arms,’ singer/songwriter tells Mixtape Daily of Cash Money deal. By Shaheem Reid, with additional reporting by Jayson Rodriguez Sean Garrett Photo: Universal Don’t Sleep: Necessary Notables Mixtape : The Inkwell Headliner : Sean Garrett Key Collaborations : “She Geeked” (featuring Gucci Mane and Tyga), “Summer Love” (featuring Bun B and Yo Gotti) and “Girls on Girls” (featuring Lil Wayne and T-Pain) Essential Info : Sean “The Pen” Garrett always has to be on point, because he might have to switch modes at any given moment. The Grammy winner has his singer hat on one minute, then he has to get right back into his songwriter/producer duties when he gets a call from a T.I. or Rihanna or Jamie Foxx, who just took a song Sean wanted to keep for his own album. The Atlanta native said he doesn’t mind; he’s elated to be active. His next mixtape, The Inkwell, drops in a few weeks. ” The Inkwell is sort of like the album before the album,” Sean said recently in New York. “As a creative person, creative artist, you have to sort of spoon-feed your audience. I was an artist well before I became ‘The Pen.’ With all of that, a lot of people have had the opportunity to hear my music on other people. So sort of representing yourself as an artist, I want my albums to be classic but creative, where people are excited to hear my music. I want people to look at me as an artist as someone that’s fun and at the same time intricate, but at the same time not typical. ” The Inkwell is the introduction to Sean Garrett the artist, officially,” the crooner added. “The first single ‘She Geeked’ is real ill, real street, but sexy. All the ladies like it. It’s me, Gucci Mane and Tyga from Young Money. It’s just super swagged-out. My music … I don’t wanna call it R&B. It’s just swag music. If you can relate to the street, you can relate to my music. If you can relate to R&B, you can relate to my music. If you can relate to urban, you can relate to my music. If you can relate to mainstream, you can relate to my music. The Inkwell is a collaboration of great artists that I expect to create music. It gives people a great look on who Sean Garrett is. I got a smash with Rocko, smash with Roscoe Dash. Of course Gucci Mane, of course Lil Wayne, Bun B, Yo Gotti, Nicki Minaj. Should I stop? It’s real ill. The more I work on it, which I’m pretty much done, the more excited I get.” After The Inkwell drops, Garrett will be focusing on the launch of his album. He’s close to finalizing a deal with Cash Money Records. Lil Wayne brought the deal to the table before he went to prison. “I really got a lot of respect for Wayne,” Sean said. “Wayne embraced me with open arms before he went on a little vacation. He took me on tour with him. He was really open arms about rocking with him. He put me on the pilot seat going on right before him. I got a lot of respect for [Cash Money], because it represents where music is going as far as really believing in yourself and not just being in a box. Just creating your own style, your own movement and believing in your team. Cash Money is really family-orientated. I can bring a lot to Cash Money, in reference to what I do, developing their other artists, helping them to travel across the water. They’ve got artists they are trying to break internationally. It’s sort of a win/win situation.” Sean has been on the road, opening for Gucci Mane, and he said he’s about to go on tour with Cash Money/ Young Money family member Drake. Other Heat This Week

PlayStation Plus, New ‘Twisted Metal’ Game Revealed At E3

Sony also announces PlayStation Move’s price and release date. By Brian Warmoth Sony’s presentation at the annual Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3) Photo: Getty Images Sony gave PlayStation 3 owners some controller details they expected, as well as a few game and service surprises on Tuesday (June 15) at the 2010 Electronic Entertainment Expo in Los Angeles. Over the course of the extended keynote address, the company made pricing and launch info public for the PlayStation Move and announced a long list of new games and service changes affecting its console. “PlayStation Move will be available in Europe on September 15, here in North America on September 19 and in Japan on October 21,” Sony Computer Entertainment America President and CEO Jack Tretton stated during his big media event for the week. “For those of you who already own a PlayStation 3 and the PlayStation Eye, the PlayStation Move Motion Controller will be available for $49.99, and the PlayStation Move Navigation Controller will sell for $29.99.” The new peripheral will be available in other packages as well, for those who need an Eye, a PS3 or both. “In addition, we’ll offer a PlayStation Move bundle that will come with one Move Motion Controller, the PlayStation Eye and our ‘Sports Champions’ game, all for [$99.99],” Tretton explained. “And if you’re one of those families I mentioned earlier that hasn’t yet added a PS3 to your living room, we’ll be offering a PlayStation Move PS3 bundle including the PS3, PlayStation Move Controller with PlayStation Eye Camera and ‘Sports Champions,’ all for [$399.99].” Tretton predicted that “between 15 and 20 titles” would be available on day one for the Move, with “more than 40” coming out in time for the 2010 holiday season. He named “SOCOM 4,” “NBA 2K11,” “SingStar Dance,” “Tiger Woods PGA Tour 11” and “Killzone 3” as being among the first wave of games that would support the new motion controls. “Killzone 3″ will also be part of the PS3’s expansion into 3-D gaming when it arrives in February 2011. ” ‘Killzone 3’ is easily our most ambitious project to date, and we’re very excited to show you some of our latest single-player campaign,” Guerilla Games managing director Herman Hulst said. “We will demo two separate sections from the fourth level of the game.” Following a full-screen demonstration for the auditorium, Tretton also listed “The Sly Collection,” “Grand Turismo 5,” “Crysis 2,” a new “Mortal Kombat” game and “NBA 2K11” as games that will support 3-D viewing. Sony showcased another kind of 3-D presentation in the form of a virtual E3 booth set up in the world of their online service PlayStation Home. While emphasizing that they intend to keep basic services and connectivity for the PS3 free, Tretton premiered details about a new paid collection of content coming to the PSN. “For those customers who want to further enrich their experience, we’ve created a subscription package that will live on top of the currently available PlayStation Network offerings,” Tretton said. “The official name of this service package is PlayStation Plus.” He detailed $49 annual and $18 monthly subscription fees for Plus, which Sony plans to pilot later this month with exclusive in-game content and DLC, free full games, early beta access to demos and automatic patching services. Tretton deferred to guests for two other major reveals over the course of the afternoon, the first being Gabe Newell, whose company Valve otherwise canceled their presence at E3 this year. Newell personally handled the introduction of a Steam-supported “Portal 2” release coming to the PS3. “I’m very pleased to announce that we’ll be bringing ‘Portal 2’ to the PlayStation 3,” Newell said. “I’m excited that Steam will be part of that experience, and I think that gamers will be delighted with features like Steam Cloud and automatic updates that will make the PlayStation 3 version of ‘Portal 2’ the best version on any console.” Newell has long been an outspoken critic of the current video game console generation, unlike game designer David Jaffe, who managed to be a part of the final Sony surprise of the day. Jaffe and his Eat Sleep Play co-founder Scott Campbell came with an entourage of clowns to confirm that they will release a new “Twisted Metal” game for the PS3 in 2011. “Today, we’re excited to announce that the ‘Twisted Metal’ legacy will continue, coming exclusively to PlayStation 3, 2011,” Jaffe said. “Our new game, ‘Twisted Metal,’ is being created by the same team members who gave birth to the dark humor and fast-action gameplay of the classic ‘Twisted Metal’ series.” Jaffe and Campbell will attempt to extend the life of their long-running franchise onto one more PlayStation console after experiencing success on both of Sony’s first two platforms. Their legacy property ended the Sony keynote fittingly as they noted its longevity. Sony, no doubt, hopes that its new endeavors with 3-D and Plus will live just as long. Documentary chronicling MC’s rise to fame airs Wednesday, June 23, at 10 p.m. on MTV. By MTV News staff Drake in “Better Than Good Enough” Photo: MTV News Drake delivers his life in rhyme like few MCs ever have, and now the up-and-coming MC is set to pull the curtain back even further in “Drake: Better Than Good Enough,” a documentary chronicling the hip-hop wunderkind’s rise to fame. The program is set to air Wednesday, June 23, at 10 p.m. exclusively on MTV. “I have always been hesitant to share the details of my life with the world, but for the first time I am comfortable and confident that you will love this story,” Drake said of “Better Than Good Enough.” Cameras have been following the So Far Gone star since he kicked off his Away From Home Tour earlier this year. “Better Than Good Enough” also features Drake and his October’s Very Own team working hard to finish Thank Me Later, his highly anticipated debut album — which was released today — and at times it finds the young rapper struggling in intimate moments where he shares the details of his ever-changing life. We see Drake opening up about his relationship with his mother, a constant presence in his life whose love he says in unconditional; we see him admonishing his staff after a poor performance in Atlanta; and we see him he feverishly working to records last-minute vocals in time for his album’s deadline. “I’m juggling my album, my reputation as a performer, my health and my sanity,” Drake says in a clip available exclusively on MTVNews.com. “It escapes me a lot of times, how I’m even still going and how I’m gonna show up in Kansas City after working all night. It’s non-stop — you think you’re getting sleep but the sleep you’re getting isn’t really real, ’cause you’re so exhausted you’re catching up to tired. “My mom is sick,” he adds. “So that scares me a lot. She’s been the most supportive person I’ve ever had in my life — the only person that loves me unconditionally, really. I know a lot of people love me and I love a lot of people. But to love somebody unconditionally is different.” “Drake is a gifted artist whose authenticity is resonating with our audience,” said Dave Sirulnick, EVP, MTV Multiplatform, News & Music, and also an executive producer for the project. “We are thrilled that he allowed MTV the exclusive opportunity to document such an important and personal time in his life.” @radical.media is the production company for “Drake: Better Than Good Enough.” Justin Wilkes is producer; Michael John Warren is director. Cam’ron And Vado Talk Boss Of All Bosses 2.5, ‘Speakin Tongues’

‘The song is about partying, living the Harlem life,’ Vado tells Mixtape Daily of his breakthrough single. By Shaheem Reid with additional reporting by Rahman Dukes Cam’ron and Vado, “Boss Of All Bosses 2.5” Photo: Gangsta Grillz Don’t Sleep: Necessary Notables Headliners : Cam’ron and Vado Co-Starring : DJ Drama Mixtape : Boss of All Bosses 2.5 Songs We Can’t Stop Playing : “Speakin Tongues,” “I Don’t Believe N—as” (featuring Fabolous) and “Amberlamps” Essential Info : If you haven’t heard Vado’s “Speakin Tongues” yet, find the MP3 on the Net or go to the club tonight. The record is going to be a summer anthem. The Cam’ron-assisted cut could be the young Harlem spitter’s breakthrough single. “I don’t know what nobody thought,” Cam laughed last weekend in Atlanta when asked about the song. “It’s me. This is what I do for a living. But shout to Vado. It’s his record. He got the beat and all that. I was like, ‘Nah, we gotta put that out immediately.’ ” “The song is about partying, living the Harlem life. Ballin’. You already know,” Vado added. Everyone is talking about that long-awaited Diplomats reunion , which Cam and Jim Jones are still trying to work out now, but Killa isn’t waiting. He’s still focused on his new clique. “Let me break it down: We’re the U.N. That’s the name of the team,” Cam described. “The U.N. is ‘Us Now.’ We got an album coming out in August that’s gonna be stupid. Vado’s solo joint, look towards December [for that one]. But I want everybody to be focused on that U.N. album, ’cause when that comes out, it’s gonna be bananas. Stupid. This August. [‘Speakin Tongues’], this is the first single off of it.” As of now, the U.N. is officially just Killa and Vado; they have three other artists who are down with them but not signed. Cam and company have 10 videos coming to the Web in the next several days, including “Ooh Baby” “Large in the Streets” and “Stop It Five.” Vado is going to put out his solo mixtape with DJ Drama, Slime Flu, soon, and that brings us the business at hand: Boss of All Bosses 2.5. “At first, it was like the lost tapes. Tracks that were throwaways, then we added more flavor to it,” Vado explained. “What happened with the 2.5, ” Cam clarified, “we gave Drama maybe 25 songs [for Boss of All Bosses 2 ]. He was like, ‘You might as well come back with 2.5 in two weeks.’ But we were doing so much new music, we might as well call it 4.8. It’s crazy. It’s about 20 songs.” Other Heat This Week

Crystal Bowersox Shines On ‘American Idol’ Movie Night

‘After that performance, you, Crystal, are back in the game,’ critiqued judge Simon Cowell. By Eric Ditzian Crystal Bowersox on “American Idol” Tuesday Photo: FOX Would it be a blockbuster or a bomb? That was the key question heading into Songs of the Cinema Night on Tuesday’s (May 11) “American Idol,” a theme whose approved song list heavily favored a perplexing mix of tunes from golden oldies, ’80s action flicks and Disney cartoons. And while this Hollywood-centric episode might not be the stuff of awards-season glory, the “Idol” crew handled themselves well in front of the camera. Crystal Bowersox shined like a seasoned A-lister and made Lee Dewyze look like a breakout star during their duet. Meanwhile, Casey James and Michael Lynche proved they just might not be bankable solo stars at this point in the competition. Dewyze got the night started with “Kiss From a Rose,” a nod back to season eight contestant Danny Gokey, thanks to mentor Jamie Foxx. During the pre-performance video, the Oscar-winning actor got up in Dewyze’s face as he did with Gokey last year, giving the singer what Foxx called the Michael Mann treatment (a reference to the famously intense director of “Miami Vice” and “Collateral”). “Yeah, it’s different,” said a visibly uncomfortable Dewyze of his mentor’s approach. Dewyze brought that unease to the stage during his straightforward take on Seal’s hit from “Batman Forever.” His higher register was simply not up to the song’s requirements. Ellen DeGeneres alone was impressed with the rendition. Randy Jackson wanted to see more of a rocker attitude and more of an effort to switch up the song’s arrangement, while Simon Cowell laid down one his most dreaded analogies: “That was verging on — I’m afraid to say — karaoke,” the Brit judge said. And so the night proceeded on from karaoke to what DeGeneres mockingly dubbed “one of the classic, great movies of all time.” Yes, Michael Lynche selected a tune from “Free Willy,” one sung by Michael Jackson but nonetheless made famous in a movie about a boy’s enduring friendship with an Orca whale. Foxx was not impressed during rehearsals, nor were the judges when they heard his live version. Backed by a choir and with a lovely gospel vibe to the song, Big Mike sounded perfectly lovely. But Kara DioGuardi nailed it when she said, “You played it safe. What you did tonight, you can do in your sleep.” Just as Kara wished Lynche had done something in the vein of past R&B performances like “This Woman’s Work,” Jackson wondered why Big Mike abandoned what is so clearly his strongest genre. “You’re an R&B dude,” said the disappointed judge. “I wish you’d chosen something R&B.” Next came the first duet of the season, as Dewyze and Crystal Bowersox teamed up onstage. Facing each other with guitars sandwiched between them, they traded and shared lyrics from “Falling Slowly,” a beautiful number from “Once.” It marked a welcome return to form for Dewyze and a stunning debut for MamaSox. His growly tone contrasted nicely with her innate bluesiness. The judges then took turns trading superlatives to describe the performance. “One of my favorite moments from the entire season,” said DioGuardi, seconds before Cowell declared, “I don’t know if I’d call that a good song. I’d call that a fantastic song.” It was a tough act to follow, but as they say in showbiz, the show must go on! And on came Casey James with a ukulele and a bluegrass-tinged take on “Mrs. Robinson,” the Simon & Garfunkel classic from “The Graduate.” Foxx seemed to be channeling DioGuardi when he asked the singer to seduce him during rehearsals. The seduction didn’t necessarily pay off. “For me, this is you fighting to stay in the competition,” DioGuardi said as she pointed out how Casey’s more comfortable standing back and rocking out. “For me this was actually a good choice.” That was less of a compliment than it might sound in print. Cowell was more direct when he said, “I didn’t think the song or the performance had the substance required on this important night for you. … I thought it was a little bit lazy and I think you could have made more of an impact.” After the break, Bowersox headed back onstage for a country-rock version of Kenny Loggins’ “I’m Alright” from the comedy “Caddyshack.” Like the movie, her rehearsal was marked by some foul language. But by the time of her live performance, MamaSox had found her form. The judges feted the 24-year-old for switching the song up far more than any of the other contestants dared during their performances. Both DioGuardi and DeGeneres announced that she “made it better.” Cowell, who had criticized Bowersox in recent weeks, welcomed her back by saying, “After that performance, you, Crystal, are back in the game.” To finish up the night, Big Mike and James sauntered back onstage for another guitar duet. Though it lacked the energy on display during Bowersox and Dewyze’s performance, their take on Bryan Adams’ “Have You Ever Really Loved a Woman” was still far better than either man’s individual effort. “The duets tonight were incredible,” said DioGuardi, summing up the judges consensus. “They were better than all of the solo performances.”

Drake, Lady Gaga, M.I.A.: ‘Storyline’ Videos Return!

Improvements in online video have meant that artists can say what they want, for as long as they want. By James Montgomery Drake Photo: Young Money Entertainment In 1992, Guns N’ Roses wowed fans — and tormented programmers — with the release of “November Rain,” a nearly nine-minute-long super video that featured lavish costuming, gratuitous supermodel-ing, lots of emoting, plenty of the titular rain and exactly one screaming guitar solo played outside a church. It was remarkable as much for its excess as it was for its scope. GNR certainly weren’t the first group to test time constraints (Michael Jackson’s iconic “Thriller” clip went beyond the 13-minute mark), nor were they the last, but with “November Rain,” they accomplished something few had ever attempted: a clip that kicked off an expansive, (sort of) linear storyline, one that would continue in subsequent videos. It almost didn’t matter if said storyline didn’t make a whole lot of sense, the point is Guns (or, more specifically, Axl Rose) realized they had the means to launch something this epic, and they went for it. Of course, nearly 20 years later, this kind of thing is no big deal: Lady Gaga pulls off the whole “storyline” thing in her sleep. And she’s not the only one to go big with her clips. In recent months, much to the delight of superfans and the woefully employed, a host of artists — from Beyonc

B.o.B Tops iTunes Singles Chart, MGMT Rule Album List

Ke$ha, Coheed and Cambria and more knock last week’s champ Jack Johnson out of the top 10. By Gil Kaufman B.o.B Photo: Frank Mullen The critical response to MGMT ‘s sophomore album Congratulations has been mixed so far , but their fans had no qualms downloading the psychedelic warriors’ album from iTunes. According to figures provided by iTunes, the trippy disc shot right to #1 on the iTunes albums chart this week, bumping mellow strummer Jack Johnson out of the #1 position . (In fact, after one week at the top, Johnson was out of the top 10 entirely for the sales week that ended Monday). MGMT were followed by Ke$ha’s Animal, which likely stormed back up thanks to her appearance on “Saturday Night Live,” and Coheed And Cambria’s Year of the Black Rainbow, which we like to think was goosed by their win in the MTV Musical March Madness competition. Holding steady at #4 were multiple Academy of Country Music Award-winners Lady Antebellum with Need You Now, followed by Usher’s Raymond v. Raymond, Justin Bieber’s My World 2.0, the self-titled debut from former “American Idol” finalist Jason Castro, the latest “Glee” cast recording, Glee — The Music, the Power of Madonna, former 10,000 Maniacs singer Natalie Merchant’s Leave Your Sleep and Lady Gaga’s The Fame. (Precise sales figures are not available because iTunes does not provide sales data for the iTunes store.) Spiked from the top 10 was former Guns N’ Roses guitarist Slash’s self-titled debut, which was #2 last week, and albums by the John Butler Trio, Sigur R

‘I don’t need your money, I need your ears,’ MC says of his latest mixtape release, to Mixtape Daily. By Shaheem Reid Consequence Photo: MTV News Don’t Sleep: Necessary Notables Mixtape : Movies on Demand Headliner : Consequence Key Cameos : “Whatever You Want (The G.O.O.D. vs. Bad megamix)” (featuring Kid Cudi, Common, John Legend, the LOX and Diddy), “The More I Get” (featuring Rick Ross) and “Down This Road” (featuring Maino) Essential Info : Consequence has a whole multimedia movement at hand. The MC who always has a strong viral-video game, is driving home the point that his material requires more than just sitting down and listening to it on an iPod. He just released his latest mixtape Movies on Demand to set up his summer LP Cons TV, named after his series of vlogs a couple of years ago. The official project is being helmed by his label CEO and his legendary cousin, Q-Tip. “This album — the first time ever you have a album executive-produced by Kanye West and Q-Tip, which essentially makes it, from a soundscape point of view, The Blueprint meets Midnight Marauders, ” he said of West’s work on the Jay-Z classic and Tip’s work with A Tribe Called Quest. “It’s an incredible album.” The Jamaica Queens native is also banking that his new tape will get the people on point for the project down the line. “It was incentive — the reason for putting out Movies on Demand was because I really had to drive home the point of what the album was gonna be and sonically what people had to look forward to,” Con explained. “Sometimes when you have such a gem … it catches late. You have to have creative and innovative ways to catch people’s interest. That’s why I gave the mixtape away for free — I don’t need your money, I need your ears. I’ll get the paper later. I’ll get the paper regardless. But when I have your ears and you’re hearing these lines and the authenticity to what hip-hop is — that’s priceless. “That’s something I grew up on,” he added. “Hip-hop has always been something to come out of nowhere, that’s why I think with Movies on Demand, it executes all the fundamentals that hip-hop brings to the table from the grassroots level to its highest peak.” Consequence just released the video for his Movies on Demand duet with Asher Roth, “Childish Games.” For other artists featured in Mixtape Daily, check out Mixtape Daily Headlines .
