‘My precious cousin. My baby. Killed last nite,’ Nicki Minaj tweeted on July 4. By Rob Markman Nicki Minaj Photo: Bryan Bedder/ Getty Images What was supposed to be a day of celebration for Team Nicki was hit with tragedy after Nicki Minaj’s cousin Nicholas Telemaque was murdered near his home in Brooklyn, New York, on Monday. “Lived in Brooklyn his whole life. My precious cousin. My baby. Killed last nite,” Nicki tweeted , along with a photo of Telemaque. The Harajuku Barbie also wrote , “My cousin Nicholas. Also goes by Juse, or @brolicalcoholic. Murdered. Last nite. Near his home. Brooklyn, NY,” and attached another pic. Yesterday Minaj spent Independence Day performing in Winnipeg, Canada, as part of Britney Spears’ Femme Fatale tour and also celebrated the birthday of her rumored boyfriend, hypeman Safaree “SB” Samuels, to whom she tweeted a b-day message: “HappyBirthdaySB!!!!!!!! @scaffbeezy hope u like ya gift coon!!!!” Since tweeting about her cousin’s death, Minaj hasn’t sent any subsequent messages out through the social networking site as of this writing. On Monday, July 4, at approximately 2:40 a.m. ET, police responded to a call in East Flatbush, Brooklyn, where they found Telemaque, 27, with multiple gunshot wounds to the upper torso region. He was taken to Kings County Hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival. The New York Daily News reported that Telemaque had just left C-PAC nightclub, just blocks from his home, when he was shot. Police told MTV News that no arrests have been made and the investigation is still ongoing. Related Artists Nicki Minaj

‘Transformers 3’ Box Office: How High Can It Go?

‘Dark of the Moon’ might not make as much as ‘Revenge of the Fallen,’ but that doesn’t make it a failure. By Eric Ditzian Rosie Huntington-Whiteley in “Transformers: Dark of the Moon” Photo: Paramount Pictures Last month, “Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides” corralled $92.2 million over its opening weekend — the highest total of 2011. How could Jack Sparrow possibly complain? Well, that lofty sum was still well below the openings of both 2006’s “Dead Man’s Chest” ($135.6 million) and 2007’s “At World’s End” ($114.7). The fact is, even the most robust of movie franchises tend to wane in terms of box-office bucks; the familiar pattern is a first film that sets the stage, a second installment that cashes in on the anticipation and then subsequent offerings that can’t continue the upward trend. Such is the case with “Transformers.” There’s much to celebrate with “Dark of the Moon,” which enjoyed a first-day gross on Wednesday of $42.5 million (when you count midnight screenings), beating the first-day pull of “On Stranger Tides” (a Friday release, no less). That puts the third “Transformers” film on track for a seven-day debut of as much as $200 million or more. So why might Optimus Prime be dissatisfied with that opening? “Revenge of the Fallen” opened to $62 million on a Wednesday in 2009, on its way to a one-week total of almost $240 million. Yet any dissatisfaction must be tempered with historical box-office perspective. “The fact that ‘T3’ didn’t measure up to ‘T2’ isn’t really a surprise, as the fatigue factor finally caught up to the franchise,” said Jeff Bock, box-office analyst for Exhibitor Relations. “This is the case for most films series as they reach the threequel. Plus, it didn’t help ‘Transformers’ that the second film was, for the most part, trashed by critics, fans and even the filmmakers.” While “Dark of the Moon” is off to a comparatively slow start, some industry observers believe it could pick up over the holiday weekend. “Everything we’re seeing on Facebook and Twitter indicates that word-of-mouth is extremely positive,” said Phil Contrino, editor of Boxoffice.com. “It’s still a bit early to rush to judgment on how well this is going to hold up over the holiday frame. It could explode in a big way over the weekend.” Perhaps. Or not. There’s no doubt the franchise took a public-opinion hit after the second film. And while the third one offers perhaps the finest use of 3-D since “Avatar,” it comes at a time when audiences are battling back against a host of shoddy 3-D offerings by simply not paying the extra bucks for another dimension. “Dark of the Moon” is a victim of the three-dimensional failings of “Clash of the Titans.” At the same time, we can’t ignore the worldwide situation. Globally, “Dark of the Moon” might well eclipse the $836 million total of “Revenge of the Fallen” (just as “On Stranger Tides” could end up being the biggest “Pirates” flick when international grosses are factored in). Thus, Optimus rejoices! So where does all this leave “Transformers” going forward? Both star Shia LaBeouf and director Michael Bay have declared, in no uncertain terms, that they plan to end their involvement with the series after three films. Both creatively and financially, that might not be such a bad thing. “This franchise needs new blood and a new angle going forward,” Bock said, going on to suggest the fourth film needs to leave the familiar environs of Earth behind and deeply explore the robot alien’s home planet. “Maybe a trip to Cybertron will be the spark ‘Transformers 4’ needs. Don’t bring it to us, we’ll come to you! But we will likely have to wait three to four years.” Check out everything we’ve got on “Transformers: Dark of the Moon.” For breaking news, celebrity columns, humor and more — updated around the clock — visit MTVMoviesBlog.com . Pete Rock Says Police Hit His Wife During Post-Party Melee

NYPD commissioner tells MTV News that officers ‘used appropriate force’ when breaking up the Smif-N-Wessun album-release party Tuesday. By Rob Markman Pete Rock Photo: MTV News What was supposed to be a week of celebration for hip-hop group Smif-N-Wessun and veteran producer Pete Rock turned violently wrong on Tuesday after cops busted up their Monumental album-release party in New York City. Concertgoers were attacked by cops, and for Rock, the drama hit especially close to home as police struck his wife and stepdaughter, he told MTV News on Thursday (June 30). “We were coming out and someone was screaming, ‘Yo, Pete, your wife, your wife.’ So I ran out to make sure they were OK and to make sure the cop would stop hitting them,” the Mount Vernon, New York, hitmaker told MTV News. “My stepdaughter said the cop was hitting her leg and she jumped in the way for her mother, which is my wife, to take the hits. And then my cameraman tried to jump in front of her, to take her hits. I was going bananas.” A press release issued Thursday by the group stated that 30 minutes after “a minor argument” that “eventually was defused by the bouncers,” approximately 15 to 20 uniformed police officers from the 7th Precinct in downtown Manhattan arrived at Tammany Hall. “The officers then hurried into the club and began macing and assaulting individuals inside the club, dragging one of them out and pummeling him directly in front of the club,” the press release said. The group’s attorney, Kenneth Montgomery, who was present at the concert, said the police “behavior was unjustified, unprovoked, and simply barbaric considering there was no provocation.” When MTV News reached out to the NYPD for comment, we received this statement from Police Commissioner Raymond W. Kelly: “Police officers had every right to defend themselves against individuals assaulting them, and used appropriate force in doing so. They also protected civilians who were being pelted with bottles at the outset, as they responded to the location at the request of the club’s own security.” Various portions of the incident were captured on film by bystanders, who recorded the melee on their cell phones and video cameras and uploaded footage to YouTube and other social-networking sites. Tek and Steele (the two members of Smif-N-Wessun) and Rock weren’t harmed physically, but for the producer, who witnessed his wife and stepdaughter being assaulted by police, it was difficult to exercise restraint. “I have to say that I’m very proud of myself that I held every bit of anger I had inside when that was happening,” he said. “I’m very proud of myself.”

Chris Brown Wins Big, Lil Wayne, Beyonce Rock 2011 BET Awards

Night’s highlights included performances by Brown, Wayne, Bey and Alicia Keys. By Rob Markman Chris Brown at the BET Awards on Sunday Photo: Kevin Winter/ Getty Images Music and Hollywood’s biggest and brightest stars all came out to the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles for the 2011 BET Awards Sunday (June 26) night. Lil Wayne, Chris Brown, Nicki Minaj, Drake, Trey Songz, host Kevin Hart, Will Smith and Jada Pinkett Smith were all in attendance as BET celebrated the year in music. The ceremony kicked off in royal fashion as the Queen of Hip-Hop Soul, Mary J. Blige, took the stage wearing an all-white jumpsuit performing “Mary Jane (All Night Long)” and “You Bring Me Joy” from her 1994 My Life album. MJB didn’t stop there, bringing out Anita Baker so the two could sing Baker’s 1986 classic “Caught Up in the Rapture.” Chris Brown came up big , winning the first award of the night, for Best Male R&B Artist, beating out the likes of Bruno Mars, Usher, Trey Songz and Cee Lo Green. The ever-controversial CB also took home an award for Best Collaboration for his Lil Wayne, Busta Rhymes-assisted track “Look at Me Now.” It didn’t end there for Brown. After a snafu that had Rihanna and Drake being announced as the winners of BET’s Viewers’ Choice Award, it was later learned that Breezy was the intended recipient, making that his third win of the night. Brown also lit up the stage performing a string of his own hits and then again alongside Big Sean, who rapped his #1 rap single “My Last.” Nicki Minaj was a shoo-in for Best Female Hip-Hop Artist, and as expected she beat out Diamond, Lola Monroe and Master P’s daughter Cymphonique. Still, Minaj, who took the stage with her Young Money family, started her speech with, “Wow, I can’t believe I won.” The crowd laughed before she clarified her point and thanked Lil Wayne. Alicia Keys shined as well, treating fans to a piano-laced set as she sang new single “Typewriter,” “A Woman’s Worth” with Bruno Mars and “Fallin’.” Throughout the night, a number of BET-related trending topics popped up on Twitter. #betawards, Wiz & Amber and Mary Mary made the rounds on the social networking site during the night as well as #kelly after Kelly Rowland performed her single “Motivation” with Trey Songz. The ex-Destiny’s Child member received one of the loudest ovations of the night. Duo Mary Mary won for Best Gospel Album, and Patti LaBelle received the Lifetime Achievement Award, which was presented by Gladys Knight. A potty-mouthed Cee Lo Green, Marsha Ambrosius and gospel’s Shirley Caesar all honored the soul singer by performing a medley of her hits before LaBelle took the stage herself. Cali Swag District came out with Doug E. Fresh and memorialized slain CSD member M-Bone , while fallen artists like Clarence Clemons , Nate Dogg , Gil Scott-Heron and Teena Marie were honored with tribute performances by Snoop Dogg, Warren G, Queen Latifah and others. As the show drew near a close, DJ Khaled, Drake, Rick Ross and Lil Wayne took the stage to perform Khaled’s “I’m on One.” Rozay and Weezy had appeared earlier in the show alongside Ace Hood to rock Hood’s “Hustle Hard (Remix)” and returned, this time with Drizzy in tow. 50 Cent Clears Up Twitter Label Drama

Fif also reveals that he is on Dr. Dre’s next single, ‘The Psycho.’ By Rob Markman 50 Cent Photo: Michael Tran/ FilmMagic 50 Cent went into renegade mode Thursday, blasting his label on Twitter and releasing his new single “Outlaw” independently of Interscope. Don’t get it twisted, however: The G-Unit General isn’t just acting off of emotion. This is all part of his plan to light a fire under the label in preparation of his fifth, yet-untitled album. (50 confirmed to MTV News that this is not the Black Magic album he had announced in 2010.) On April 18, Fif announced via Twitter that he was going to be dropping a single from his new album, but never did. When MTV News caught up with him a few days later on the L.A. set of Nicole Scherzinger’s “Right There” video, 50 backtracked , saying that instead, he opted to work in conjunction with Interscope on the release. “So I had the record I was ready to launch, and we sat down and everybody talked,” Fif told MTV News in an interview Friday (June 17). “What happens is, there are a lot of people involved in my actual launch, because its three parties; it’s Shady, then you got Aftermath, then you got Interscope, and then you got me on my end. So by the time we got to go sit down with [Interscope chairman] Jimmy [Iovine], we talked a little bit, and then I ended up having to go see Dre, because we had the issue, the confusion about the Twitter stuff.” The “Twitter stuff” the Southside Jamaica, Queens, rapper is referencing is when he charged on the social-networking site that Dre and Jimmy Iovine were “mad” because Fif announced that he was developing his own brand of high-end head headphones to rival the Good Doctor’s Beats by Dre. “We sat down, we cleared that up, me and Dre, and then we said, ‘Let’s just get back to the music and do what we do,’ ” Curtis said before revealing his and Dre’s next move. “Immediately after, we wrote a song together called ‘The Psycho’; it’s Dre’s next single.” After making peace with his partners, it was 50’s intention to release his own single with his label’s support and have a record that would impact radio so he could perform at Hot 97’s annual Summer Jam concert at Giants Stadium in New Jersey. There was no single and, subsequently, no 50 Cent at the show, which took place June 5. “Why would I be going to Summer Jam to perform a bunch of feature songs?” the rapper asked rhetorically. “That’s not for me. I rather not be there than to go through that.” Things took a turn Thursday when the MC tweeted: “Ok I tried to be cool with my record company. I went to the meeting talk to everyone and sh– feels like there moving in slow motion,” adding that he wouldn’t drop an album in 2011 unless Interscope got “on the same page.” Then he premiered his new song “Outlaw” later that evening in an effort to cause excitement for his upcoming LP, which will be his last on Interscope. Though he is visibly concerned about how the rollout of his album is being handled, Fif wants to be clear about where he places the blame. “It’s not necessarily Dre or Jimmy; it’s more the guys that they pass the responsibilities on to. It takes longer for people, because they’ll be like, ‘OK, we’re gonna do this and we’re gonna do that,’ and the building will start having those conversations, but they’re not actually moving at that point.” What do you think of 50 Cent’s label drama? After Facebook ‘Diary,’ Thomas Ohlson Opens Up About ALS

‘If we devoted ourselves to preserving life rather than our bank accounts, we would all be richer for it,’ he tells MTV News. By Eric Ditzian Thomas Ohlson Photo: MTV News We first met Thomas Ohlson during MTV’s “Diary of Facebook,” a 30-minute documentary that delved into the social-networking site’s effort to highlight users’ life-changing stories. In 2005, Ohlson was diagnosed with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), a devastating disease that causes motor neurons to die, leading muscles to waste away while cognitive abilities remain unaffected. Confined to a wheelchair, unable to talk and despairing that his life no longer had purpose, he ended up creating a Facebook account and, in turn, new reasons to keep fighting. Though he can only type with two fingers, Ohlson has become an articulate ALS activist, sharing his experiences and becoming a public face of his disease. His courage in the face of unimaginable suffering was so affecting that we decided to visit Ohlson and his family at home for further insight into their remarkable situation. “I spend a lot of time thinking about how wonderful my life was only five short years ago — the dreams I had for myself and my family,” Ohlson told us. “Now, all gone. I have no real future and have impacted my family in ways that cause me great sorrow. … I want my family to remember me as the strong and proud father and husband I once was, not the disfigured and helpless creature that I have become. ALS is not only killing me, it is taking my loved ones with me — killing any semblance of a normal existence for them.” The brutal truth is that, not only is there no cure for ALS, there is not even a single treatment for it. “I feel like this is a bad joke,” he said. “How can almost every disease have some kind of treatment, but ALS have none?” When his young daughter found out her father could no longer speak, she cried for three days. Then she typed him a message on the computer he uses to communicate. “You can teach me things by putting things on the screen and you will always love me, so that’s OK with me,” she wrote. “So that’s all I need to have a good daddy just like you.” “I had an epiphany,” Ohlson said of that exchange. “Nobody wanted to see me die. And I realized in that moment I did not want to leave them.” Ohlson now hopes being open about his suffering will spur action, involvement and understanding about the disease. The key to surviving ALS, he explained, is remaining an active participant in life. Social-networking sites like Facebook, then, have been invaluable tools, allowing him virtually to step outside his confines and connect with the world around him. Anyone who wants further information or is interested in joining the fight can visit ALS Therapy Development Institute . “In a world where we can split the atom, send people into space and create life, no one should have to suffer,” he said. “If we devoted ourselves to preserving life rather than our bank accounts, we would all be richer for it.” At the same time that he suffers, Ohlson admits his affliction has given him a deeper understanding of what it means to be truly happy. “Stop always looking to the future for happiness and appreciate what you have right now,” he said. “Life is a gift to be both enjoyed and cherished. Enjoy every second, every minute and every day. Cherish your health and recognize how precarious it is. … And always remember: Success is not measured by the possessions you surround yourself with; rather it is measured by the people who choose to surround you.”

Women In The World: Why Does Female Circumcision Still Exist?

See the article here:

Gender inequalities have fueled several debates in history, from women having the right to vote to women in the workplace. While researching gender inequalities in different countries, I came across the controversial practice of female circumcision in Africa. This painful practice is perpetuated in Africa because of male domination embedded in the social and cultural structures. Female circumcision is the process of cutting female genitals, specifically the clitoris. There are several different types of female circumcision, which we will let you look up on your own- the details can be gruesome. This procedure is often disguised as a celebration to young girls that are about to have it done. To her surprise, she is having an invasive operation instead. This procedure, practiced in over 25 African countries, is a clear violation of girls’ rights to their own bodies. Not only is the process itself extremely dangerous, but there is proof that girls are more vulnerable to infections and complications during childbirth after. So why would anyone enforce the practice of female circumcision? The traditionally male dominated African culture uses this procedure to justify what they consider to be a pure marriage. They feel that female circumcision ensures that a woman is a virgin, a requirement to get married. It is believed that without a clitoris, you are less likely to engage in sexual behavior before marriage. You have to wonder, where does male virginity come into play? Male circumcision is a much less invasive procedure that does not affect their sexual enjoyment. Men are not forced to undergo this painful operation to prove themselves, so why do women? In addition, cultural beliefs about female sexuality add to the persistence of female circumcision. There are widespread views that when females are not circumcised, their husbands and potential children are in danger. These unjustifiable worries force women to undergo a painful and dangerous procedure. The practice of female circumcision perpetuates the idea that males and females have different rights when it comes to sexuality and marriage. Women are forced to undergo this invasive procedure for no reason other than contrived cultural beliefs. In a teaser for upcoming ‘Last Friday Night’ video, science-fair loving Kathy Beth Terry gets trashed at a house party. By James Dinh Katy Perry’s “Last Friday Night (T.G.I.F.)” cover art Photo: Capitol Pop stars often take on different personas in their music videos, but Katy Perry has taken it a step further, unveiling a dorky new alter ego before the release of her clip for “Last Friday Night (T.G.I.F.).” For the fifth single off Teenage Dream, Perry has transformed into a 13-year-old high-schooler named Kathy Beth Terry, whose Facebook page lists her birthday as June 1, 1998. The visual for the Dr. Luke and Max Martin-produced feel-good tune drops June 14. Fans caught an early glimpse of the “Last Friday Night” video in a teaser released online on Tuesday (June 7). In the 35-second sneak peek, an invite for “the party of the summer” is pinned onto Kathy Beth’s corkboard, alongside her science award ribbon and dentist appointment reminder. “What, what was last night?” a confused Kathy asks herself in the clip, before a flashback montage shows festivities, kids dancing, and the wide-eyed teen throwing up in a shoe. Perry’s solar-system-loving persona has already hit the social media realms of Twitter and Facebook. Not only does Kathy Beth Terry love a good party, but she’s a technology wiz too. “Harry S. Truman High: your firewall is weak, just hacked into @Twitter at the library, you can’t block me, n00bs!” Kathy tweeted on Tuesday. If fans want to know even more about Kathy, they can head to the high-schooler’s Facebook page and read up on some of her interests, which include high-school science fairs, Beanie Babies and Hanson. As for where the 13-year-old gets her fashions from, Kathy writes, “I shop at Mervyn’s and Dillard’s (sometimes). I WISH I could afford 579!” What do you think of Katy’s video teaser?
