Carrie Underwood Is ‘Loving’ New ‘American Idol’ Panel

‘Steven and J.Lo are doing such an amazing job,’ she tells MTV News. By Kara Warner Carrie Underwood Photo: MTV News Carrie Underwood has come a long way since she was the wide-eyed winner of “American Idol” back in 2005 — with a Grammy-winning country career under her belt — but she still takes the time to watch the show that made her a star. When MTV News caught up with Underwood recently as she promoted her acting debut in the new film “Soul Surfer,” we had to ask her thoughts on the changes to the new season, particularly the new faces added to the judges’ panel. “I am loving the judges,” Underwood said. “I know Simon [Cowell] was always such a huge part of the show, but if I had just started watching now, I wouldn’t miss it, you know what I mean? I think Steven [Tyler] and J.Lo are doing such an amazing job. I actually got the chance to talk to Steven Tyler, and I was like, ‘I’m finding out that I like you more than I thought I did.’ ” Underwood said she liked the Aerosmith frontman before he joined the show, but she’s enjoying seeing a softer side of his rock-star persona. “I’ve always liked Steven Tyler the artist, but as a person, he’s really coming across [as] charming and warm and friendly and encouraging,” she said. “Of course we always knew that J.Lo is sweet and beautiful, and she’s just confirming all of our previous thoughts about her by being on the show. I’m really enjoying watching it.” So who are her favorite contestants? “I always have a few that I’m watching, but I never say who they are because I remember what it was like when I was on the show, and I never liked that [when past contestants picked favorites].” Get your “Idol” fix on MTV News’ “American Idol” page , where you’ll find all the latest news, interviews and opinions.

Rebecca Black Leads Us Through ‘Friday,’ Frame By Frame

Young singer explains why there was no bus at the bus stop, the infamous ‘butt slap’ scene and more! By Kyle Anderson Rebecca Black Photo: MTV News When Rebecca Black’s “Friday” became the definitive viral hit of 2011, most people were drawn into the song’s rapid-fire, slightly silly stream-of-consciousness lyrics. But the accompanying video — which so far has netted nearly 70 million views on YouTube — was a big part of the draw too, as it created a spectacularly colorful dream world that let Black play a bit.

Katy Perry Says She Swiped ‘E.T.’ From Three 6 Mafia

Perry’s latest single was actually meant for the Academy Award-winning rap group. By James Montgomery, with reporting by Sway Calloway Katy Perry Photo: MTV News Katy Perry has already said that when she was writing songs for her Teenage Dream album, her goal was to “make a different ‘movie’ for each song.” So it’s ironic that her latest single, “E.T.,” was actually meant for a group who knows a thing or two about movies … and they’ve got the Academy Award to prove it. “I’ll tell you, it’s funny … this song, I remember writing with Max Martin and Dr. Luke, and there’s this producer they wrote with, named Ammo as well, and they were just showing me different samples of songs or tracks or beats, and they accidentally pulled up this beat, and it was for Three 6 Mafia,” Perry told MTV News. “I heard it and I always knew I wanted to write this futuristic, alienistic song, and they pulled it up and I was like, ‘Wait, I can wrap my head around this. I know this seems like a long shot, but I think I have the perfect material to put on top of this sound.’ And I did, and it really worked out perfectly.” So if you’re one of those Katy fans who’s a bit mystified by the abrupt change of pace of “E.T.” — and its equally left-of-center video — well, then you can sort of understand why: Deep down, it’s actually a Three 6 Mafia track. “It’s a whole different vibe for me. It’s kind of a bit harder, it does have that urban feel underneath it. I think that’s why Kanye added even another layer on top of it,” Perry explained. “And it has … amazing … sonics — I mean, there’s so much to it, there’s a lot in the song if you really put your headphones on and sink into the song.” And that’s just part of what drew Perry to the track in the first place. After all, on Teenage Dream, she set out to make movies … and though it may confound some of her fans, “E.T.” is perhaps the most wonderfully odd movie she’s ever made. And she knows it. “Even teasing people with different images from ‘E.T.,’ people are so perplexed, ” she laughed. “They’re like, ‘Katy Perry, you’re supposed to be Betty Boop! You’re supposed to be wearing pink!’ It’s exciting to be able to push my audience, to be like, ‘There’s always more, I’ve got all of this hidden up my sleeve that I’ve really longed to show people.'” What did you think of Katy’s new video? Jamie Foxx And will.i.am Bring ‘Hot Wings’ To ‘American Idol’

Drum line and colorfully dressed dancers bring ‘Rio’ song to life on ‘Idol’ stage. By Adam Graham Jamie Foxx and will.i.am on “American Idol” Photo: FOX Jamie Foxx and will.i.am brought their “Hot Wings” to “American Idol” on Thursday (March 31). The pair teamed up to perform their new single from the soundtrack to “Rio,” the computer-animated flight tale in which they both voice characters. And they didn’t come alone: They performed with a 12-member drum line and a full team of colorfully dressed dancers, while footage from “Rio” played on the video screens behind them. Neither Foxx nor will.i.am are strangers to “Idol.” Foxx was a mentor to the contestants in seasons eight and nine and also performed on the show during season eight, while will did “Just Can’t Get Enough” with the Black Eyed Peas on the show just two weeks ago and also performed on the “Idol” stage with the Peas in seasons eight and nine. They both clearly know their way around the place by now and were comfortable shouting out the judges (“I see you, Randy!”) mid-song. The song is built around the repeated refrain “I wanna party, I wanna samba” and finds Foxx and will.i.am trading verses, in character as their “Rio” likenesses (Foxx plays Nico, a canary, while will.i.am plays a cardinal named Pedro). They entered the stage together via the “Idol” staircase, and Foxx — dressed in a black suit and dark shades — opened the song. Mr. i.am — dressed in a white jacket, red shirt and porkpie hat — chimed in during the second verse, rapping about ghetto blasters and speedy dance moves. The album version of the song also features the pair’s “Rio” co-star Anne Hathaway, though the Oscar host was not in the Idoldome for the taping. The performance featured elaborate choreography among the dancers (captured by the “Idol” crew via overhead cameras) and staged fighting on the side stage. At the performance’s close, Foxx plugged “Rio” as “fun for the whole family.” The film hits theaters April 15, and the soundtrack — which is already available for download on iTunes — is due in stores Tuesday. NKOTBSB Release ‘Don’t Turn Out The Lights’ Single

Group first teased the song back in December and are set to tour together this summer. By Aly Semigran NKOTBSB Photo: Getty The Backstreet Boys have finally quit playing games with their fans’ hearts. After giving a sneak peek of their first collaborative single with the New Kids on the Block — whom they’ll be hitting the road with for a massive tour this summer — called “Don’t Turn Out the Lights,” NKOTBSB have now released the song in its entirety. The peppy pop number, complete with synthesizers and the obligatory name-drop (“NKOTBSB,” they announce at the beginning of the track), which was produced by Eman and written by Claude Kelly, features the sing-along chorus, “So don’t turn out the lights now, lights now, lights now/ ‘Cause in a minute we’ll be feeling like never before/ So don’t turn out the lights now, lights now, lights now/ I’ll be whatever you need and more.” Vocals by members of both groups — BSB Nick Carter’s and NKOTB’s Jordan Knight’s contributions are easily recognized — are featured on the three-and-a-half-minute dance-ready song, which sounds like a modern version of their hits from the ’80s and ’90s (think Jason Derulo). Likely to strike a chord with hard-core fans, the song is about rekindling a romance that’s begun to fizzle: “I know we haven’t been getting along at all/ I don’t think that it’s time … I don’t wanna say goodbye/ ‘Cause just when I think it through/ The memories come flooding back/ It’s like instantly I love you like that.” “Don’t Turn Out the Lights” is the debut single off NKOTBSB’s first album together, a self-titled record slated to drop on May 24. As promised recently by Knight, in addition to “Don’t Turn Out the Lights,” the Backstreet Boys will “record probably a couple more songs with” New Kids. Since it’s not the first time the groups have performed music together (they memorably did a mash-up of New Kids on the Block and Backstreet Boys songs during the 2010 American Music Awards ), it seems they’ve built a good rapport with one another. The guys are ready to share the stage to perform hits from both groups’ repertoires as well as new songs like “Don’t Turn Out the Lights.” “It’s gonna be nonstop back-and-forth action. We’re really gonna play off each other,” Knight explained. What do you think of NKOTBSB’s “Don’t Turn Out the Lights”? Tell us in the comments.

‘American Idol’ Elton John Night Boosts Haley Reinhart, Casey Abrams

Pia Toscano and Scotty McCreery also wow the judges. By Gil Kaufman “American Idol” top ten plus one Photo: FOX Theme nights are always tricky, and on Wednesday (March 30), the “American Idol” top 11 had to take on the imposing catalog of Elton John. Some soared and some crashed, and a couple of recent cellar dwellers — Casey Abrams and Haley Reinhart — appeared to pull themselves out of the fire with gutsy performances. As always on non-country theme weeks, the question was “What is Scotty McCreery going to do this time?” He made the obvious choice, the obscure “Country Comfort,” which he picked because it had the word “country” in it, but also because it’s one of Elton’s only country-leaning tunes. With lyrics about grandmas and factory closings, it was pretty much what you’d expect: a Vince Gill-esque, aw-shucks acoustic amble accented by pedal steel and piano — with a shout-out to his real granny! — that, well, sounded like just about everything McC has done so far. “Nothin’ I could say to you that an old-fashioned pair of high-heeled cowboy boots wouldn’t fix,” Steven Tyler gushed cryptically, adding that he (still) loves everything about the teen crooner. Once again, Jennifer Lopez gave the most sage advice, encouraging Scotty not to get too in his head and doubt himself. Randy Jackson marveled at how fast Scotty has matured on the program and said he felt like he was at a headlining show by the “Idol” finalist. If Scotty always brings the country rumble, dreadlocked rude girl Naima Adedapo similarly finds a way to add a reggae swag to her songs. Wearing a white jumpsuit with red, yellow and green accents, she gave a Bob Marley-esque island vibe to “I’m Still Standing,” struggling at points to keep in tune but truly making it her own and creating one of the most unique “Idol” makeovers in the recent memory. Lopez and Jackson loved the reggae lilt but weren’t sure if it wasn’t a better idea than the payoff, and maybe a bit corny. Talk about someone totally in the pocket on Elton night. Paul McDonald went for it with the legendary “Rocket Man,” which mentor Jimmy Iovine suggested he play like it was an encore in front of 20,000 screaming fans. Wearing his signature flowered country suit and strumming an acoustic guitar, McDonald started out mellow and seductive, with just a piano for accompaniment. It seemed like he blew off Iovine’s advice, because while he retained that ragged Ray LaMontagne vibe, he barely got out of second gear, keeping things mostly low-key and feathery. Randy called it “quiet comfort” and said, despite being pitchy, Paul’s soft, gentle voice was once again infectious, and Jennifer suggested he was holding back and needed to let loose. “Don’t Let the Sun Go Down on Me” is an old “Idol” favorite, and despite being counseled to move out of the ballad-ballad-ballad routine, Pia Toscano went with the emotional staple. With a subtle arrangement, Toscano put the focus squarely on her powerful voice and, backed by a gospel choir, she seemed to hit the sweet spot once more. “Pia, you’ve done it again,” Tyler said, gently needling Randy’s suggestion that Pia switch it up. “That’s what you are and you sang it, you nailed it. And you know how I know a good song? It makes me cry inside … that’s just about as good as it gets.” Lopez said the notes Pia chooses take the audience to “an otherworldly place” and that Toscano seems poised to break through to another level. Stefano Langone made his first trip to the bottom three last week, so he was probably hoping that the epic “Tiny Dancer” would do the trick. But the cheesy arrangement and his smarmy Disney-style performance probably didn’t save the day. All three judges liked it and said Stefano seemed to be really taking their notes and trying to connect with the audience, keep his eyes open and his voice focused on his sweet, high range. Teen Lauren Alaina was just a toddler during the second revival of ultimate weeper “Candle in the Wind” in 1997, but her restrained, country lilt came off like the ultimate mash-up of past “Idol” divas Kelly Clarkson and Carrie Underwood. Though the performance was a bit sedate, her vocals were controlled and crisp and she gave off her usual

Jay-Z Investigated By NBA For Wildcats Postgame Visit

Minority owner of the New Jersey Nets met winning Kentucky players. By Alvin Blanco Jay-Z Photo: Rob Loud/ Getty Images Photos of Jay-Z taken with the University of Kentucky men’s basketball team after their win over North Carolina in the Regional Finals of the NCAA tournament on Sunday have drawn the wary eyes of the NBA. CBSSports.com reports that the NBA will be investigating Jay-Z’s postgame congratulatory visit to the Kentucky Wildcats locker room at the Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey. Such visits normally would be considered harmless, but Jay-Z is a minority owner of the New Jersey Nets, and contact between NBA personnel and potential NBA prospects is prohibited. Kentucky has at least two possible lottery picks in Brandon Knight and Terrence Jones, should they declare for the NBA draft. The photos and video began making the Internet rounds the day after the win, showing Jay-Z posing with players in the locker room. During a postgame interview, Kentucky player Darius Miller, who one of the photos is credited to, was asked about his reaction to seeing Jay-Z after the game. “It was crazy. I kind of had to do a double take,” Miller told Louisville’s Courier-Journal. “I didn’t expect that at all. I just had to get a picture with him.” Hova congratulating the Wildcats didn’t break any NCAA rules, however the hip-hop mogul might face a fine from the NBA, considering that Boston Celtics General Manager Danny Ainge was fined $30,000 for sitting next to Kevin Durant’s mother while he was still playing for the University of Texas in 2007. While the New Jersey Nets declined to comment, a spokesperson for the NBA confirmed to MTV News that the league is indeed investigating the matter. A message to Jay-Z’s representatives was not returned by press time. Sound off on this story in the comments below! Related Artists Jay-Z

Jennifer Lopez’s Lil Wayne Collabo ‘I’m Into You’ Leaks Online

Singer also announces that she will perform on ‘American Idol’ on May 5. By James Dinh Jennifer Lopez Photo: Jeff Kravitz/ FilmMagic Jennifer Lopez collaborated with Pitbull for her comeback dance anthem “On the Floor,” and her follow-up single will continue a trend of linking up with chart-topping MCs. On Wednesday (March 30), the “American Idol” judge took to Ryan Seacrest’s morning radio show to tease a snippet of her new single, “I’m Into You,” which features none other than rapper Lil Wayne . Despite the singer’s “Give It Love, Get It Early” campaign to release the song in its entirety early on iTunes utilizing Facebook ‘s “like” option, the tune has already made its way to the blogosphere. Over a trippy mid-tempo beat, Lil Wayne opens with a brief verse before Lopez sings a tale of a lover’s spellbound attraction. “When I look into your eyes, it’s over/ You got me hooked with your love controller/ I’m tripping and I could not get over/ I’m feeling lucky like a four-leaf clover/ I’m into you,” the pop star sings during the song’s pop&B chorus. The Weezy-assisted tune, which was reportedly produced by Stargate, will be available on iTunes next Tuesday. Among the other songs scheduled for release through the “Give It Love, Get It Early” campaign are “Papi” (April 13) and “Love?” (April 20). In addition to premiering some new music, the pop star opened up about last week’s surprising “Idol” results show, where the judges decided to save contestant Casey Abrams . “It was crazy. We knew that it was kind of a radical decision because it was so early in the season,” the singer told Seacrest. However, Lopez admitted that all the judges unanimously decided that it was the right thing to do to prevent the “dynamic performer” from packing his bags. For now, J. Lo is gearing up to perform her new music on “American Idol” on May 5 as well as at KIIS FM’s annual Wango Tango show on May 14. What do you think of J. Lo’s new tune “I’m Into You”?
