Young Money diva calls latest clip ‘playful’ and ‘sexy.’ By D.L. Chandler, with reporting by Audrey Kim Nicki Minaj on the set of “Super Bass” Photo: MTV News While Nicki Minaj is supposedly on a recording hiatus, that isn’t stopping the chart-topping rap diva from creating steamy visuals for a track featured on the deluxe edition of her platinum-selling debut, Pink Friday. MTV News caught up with the fashion-forward diva on the set of her new video for “Super Bass.” Dazzling in a skintight pink bodysuit emblazoned with giraffe prints, Nicki completed the look with a half-blond and half-pink wig, gold eye shadow and bright pink lipstick matching the outfit. Nicki revealed the theme behind the song during a break in shooting. ” ‘Super Bass’ is about the boy that you are crushing over,” Nicki said. “And you kind of want to get your mack on, but you’re taking the playful approach.” Gyrating atop a crystal-clear motorcycle, Nicki is clearly upping the sex appeal. The Young Money diva explained the focus behind the video: “I just wanted to do something real colorful and cutesy. This is an icy world, it’s a sexy world, it’s a playful world. Of course I have lots of eye candy for my girls and my boys,” she teased. The teasing doesn’t stop there. “We have a lot of little surprises in store for this particular video,” Nicki promised. “I would like to put out 50 videos. The videos really tell the story a lot more elaborately than just the song does.” Nicki also talked about her smash hit “Moment 4 Life” and its incredible staying power. “It’s been #1 on the rap Billboard charts and then it’s been #1 on the R&B and hip-hop charts,” marveled the 26-year-old starlet. Pink Friday continues to break records as well, with the album achieving a milestone of the most consecutive weeks in the top 10 by a female rapper. The hip-hop beauty summed up neatly her approach to the video in a few brief words. “I felt like ‘Moment 4 Life’ was like letting my hair down, but ‘Super Bass’ is letting it all hang out,” Nicki said with a playful chuckle. Singer was called ‘sexy’ by judge Jennifer Lopez. By Gil Kaufman, with reporting by Kara Warner Casey Abrams Photo: Getty Images Jennifer Lopez has made a career of knowing what her fans think is sexy. So when she told bearded “American Idol” top 13 finalist Casey Abrams that she thought he had serious sex appeal, the singer took the praise in stride. The 19-year-old upright-bass player and film-camp counselor almost missed out on last week’s show due to an emergency hospitalization for stomach pains, but he’s had a good time with all the talk about his looks on the show. “Am I ready to be a heartthrob? Yes,” he said at last week’s afterparty for the top 13. “I’m ready. We’ll see how it goes.” Given his embrace of sex symbol-dom, he was asked what his plan was to take on magazine cover boy Justin Bieber. “I guess I’m gonna have to start dancing, I have to learn the drums, I’m gonna have to do this with my hair,” he joked, pulling down his unruly ‘fro onto his forehead in an attempt to approximate the Bieber swoop. The good news is that the multi-instrumentalist already plays the drums, so he can check that off his list, and he hinted that he may pull out an electric bass at some point — or even a sitar! On Wednesday night’s show , Abrams joked that he had the right (read: grizzled) look to take on notoriously disheveled rock icon Joe Cocker’s version of the Beatles’ “With a Little Help From My Friends,” and on an earlier show, he quipped, “I just want to show the world that guys like me are sexy.” “You’re sexy, Casey,” Lopez assured him last week when Casey performed an unhinged version of Screamin’ Jay Hawkins’ “I Put a Spell on You” to acclaim from the judges’ panel. “Do you know that? Somebody wants it bad,” she added in a nod to what she said was Abrams’ obvious dedication to remain in the competition. Do you agree with J.Lo that Abrams is sexy? Let us know in comments below! But Mr. La Flare, Webbie and Rocko find things to love about the ladies in new clip, which premiered on ‘RapFix Live.’ By Alvin Blanco Gucci Mane in his “I Don’t Love Her” video It’s Gucci time. Atlanta’s Gucci Mane debuted his new video for “I Don’t Love Her,” featuring Webbie and Rocko, on Thursday’s (March 10) edition of “RapFix Live.” The video features Gucci, Webbie and Rocko lyrically asserting what they love about their women, without necessarily admitting they ever fall in love with them. Directed by Mr. Boomtown, the majority of the video’s scenes take place in a dark club, where the song’s players are surrounded by numerous, gyrating video vixens. “I love things about her (but don’t love her)/ I love the way she treat me (but don’t love her),” Rocko says on the most-PG portion of the song’s hook. “I Don’t Love Her” is produced by Zaytoven and will appear on Gucci’s upcoming street album, The Return Of Mr. Zone 6, due in stores on March 22. Earlier this week, Gucci released another song from the project, “Brinks,” with rhymes from veteran rapper and music mogul Master P. Other features on the album include Wale, Birdman, OJ Da Juiceman and Waka Flocka Flame, among others. Lately, Gucci has been getting more attention for his legal dilemmas and questionable taste in body art than his music. In January, Gucci made headlines when photos of his new tattoo — an ice cream cone with three scoops and the word “Brrr” beneath it on the right side of his face — hit the Internet. That same month, Gucci La Flare was arrested for a parole violation and it was revealed that he had filed a “special plea of mental incompetency.” What do you think of Gucci Mane’s new video? ‘Dangerous’ Durbin surprises judges with his rendition of the Wings staple ‘Maybe I’m Amazed.’ By Adam Graham James Durbin performs on “American Idol” Wednesday Photo: FOX James Durbin has one of those big, overpowering voices that can be difficult to rein in. But on Wednesday’s (March 9) episode of “American Idol,” he was able to keep it in check, and turned in one of the evening’s standout performances. After tearing through Judas Priest’s heavy metal classic “You’ve Got Another Thing Comin’ ” on last week’s show, one may have expected Durbin to go back to the metal playbook this week, when contestants were asked to sing a song by one of their personal idols. Instead, Durbin threw a curveball and opted to sing Paul McCartney’s “Maybe I’m Amazed,” which was recorded by Wings in 1976 (and may be familiar to fans of “The O.C.” as the song played at Julie Cooper’s wedding in the season-one finale). Durbin said he admired McCartney for his versatility and for being one of the best musicians, writers and singers in rock history, and said he one day also hopes to be remembered in those terms. In the studio, Durbin teamed up with producer Jim Jonsin (Lil Wayne’s “Lollipop,” T.I.’s “Whatever You Like”) to work on the song’s arrangement, and Jonsin pumped up the song with a bit of a hip-hop backbeat. Interscope Records head honcho Jimmy Iovine praised Durbin’s mighty pipes, saying “Idol” is a perfect vehicle for a voice like Durbin ‘s to be discovered. “You don’t hear many voices like that,” he said. “I didn’t even know kids were out there singin’ like that!” On the “Idol” stage, Durbin — flaunting a fresh haircut, a clean-shaven face and without the scarf “tail” he wore last week — did justice to “Amazed,” and didn’t drive it over a cliff with his over-the-top vocal wails. Instead, he held back and showed a more reserved side of himself, and displayed a range, both vocally and emotionally, that proved he was more than the one-trick-pony/ Adam Lambert clone as his detractors had him pegged. The judges dug the way he changed things up and managed to “slay” it, in Randy Jackson’s words. “I was like, ‘Yo, this dude can do anything, man!” the Dawg told him. “James Durbin is dangerous, America. This guy can sing!” Steven Tyler followed suit, saying Durbin took everything he ever felt and “kicked it into the middle of next week” — apparently that’s a good thing — and Jennifer Lopez complimented his vocal skills. “The truth is you have what the greatest rock singers have, which is a melodic quality to your voice,” she said. And it appears as though we’re going to hear plenty more of that voice in the weeks to come. What did you think of James Durbin’s performance? Let us know in the comments! The Notorious B.I.G. worked with a ton of people during his brief career ranging from Michael Jackson to Mary J. Blige . Vibe.com reached out to several of Biggie’s collaborators to get their thoughts on working with one of hip-hop’s greats. Brooklyn Residents Remember Biggie Fourteen Years Later WBW Honors: Booker T. Washington WBW Honors: Medgar Evers Biggie kicked off disc two of his second album, Life After Death , with “Notorious Thugs.” The song paired Biggie with Bone Thugs-N-Harmony . Layzie Bone: “Puffy called us and said, ‘BIG want y’all on a record.’ We are like, ‘Hell yeah…we coming.’ We end up being in the studio with Biggie all night. We did all of our verses and then BIG was like, ‘You know what? I’m going to take this home.’ When BIG went home we did not hear that record until after he passed.” Flesh-N-Bone: “Hearing Biggie do our style was incredible. I understood why he had to take it home and study it for a minute. He put his own spin on our Bone flow.” Krayzie Bone: “It was bitter sweet. Biggie ripped it but we didn’t have the opportunity to tell him how much he ripped it. He came out and did his thing on the song to where he put another notch under his belt because our style is not easy to where you can just say, ‘I’m going to rap like these dudes.’ Especially back then when we were first coming out. For a New York rapper to do our style was a risk. But when he did it that n*gga killed it. New York showed us a lot of love off of that record. ‘Notorious Thugs’ and ‘Crossroads’ are the only songs they played in NYC by Bone. It was Bone and Biggie.” Hip-hop nerds know that Pete Rock was robbed of inspired the beat for “Juicy.” Pete gives the lowdown on the situation: Pete Rock: “Due to people just doing business a new way and me being young and not understanding the publishing side of things, I let certain things fall through the cracks [when it came to ‘Juicy’]. Puffy came over with Big and I had the drums playing and Puff was interested in what he heard. He asked me if I was making it for CL Smooth and I was like, ‘Nah.’ Big was standing there, but he was more interested in seeing how I made beats. He was requesting certain interlude beats. He was like, ‘I want this song you put between these two songs on your album.’ I made this beat called ‘In The Flesh’ that was on the Main Ingredient album. And I made that beat in front of Biggie. He was like, ‘Oh sh*t…I just wanted to see how you did it, son.’ He was bugging. But Biggie wasn’t even interested in ‘Juicy.’ Next thing you know, ‘Juicy’ comes out and I don’t get credit. I really felt a way about it after Big passed away. We didn’t get to have the relationship that Premier had with him. I had a lot of music for Big, but it just didn’t happen.” DMC of Run DMC appeared on Big’s final album on the song “My Downfall,” which was inspired by an old DMC lyric. DMC: “When I got asked to do a record with Biggie, I was shocked. I got a phone call from Puffy and my manager Eric like, ‘Puffy is looking for you.’ I’m like, ‘Puffy???’ Why the hell is Puffy looking for me for? I don’t dance and I don’t drink Cristal…I drink Ole English [laughs].’ But Puffy calls and says, ‘Yo, Biggie wants you on his chorus. He doesn’t want to sample your voice.’ Biggie thought my line, ‘That’s not all, MC’s have the gall, to pray and pray for my downfall’ was dope. A lot of the really lyrical MC’s like Biggie, Rakim, and Freddie Fox told me, ‘Yo, D…you wasn’t that dude that had to have three 16 bars of fire. You would have one or two statements that could shut motherf*ckers up.’ So I go to Puff’s Daddy’s House studios to meet producer Nashiem [Myrick]. When I finished my part, I was soupped! I’m a humble dude, but I was f*cking soupped because Biggie was huge. Of all the people Biggie could have called Big Daddy Kane or Slick Rick. But he called me. When I spoke to Puff he told me, ‘Imagine Biggie is doing a show and goes, I got a surprise guest for you…a legend!’ And I come out. That would be getting hits on YouTube right now! But unfortunately Biggie passed away, so we never got the chance to perform [‘Pray For My Down Fall’] together. Still, I got to make a record with Biggie Smalls. It was an honor to do that record.” Read more remembrances of Big from Faith Evans, Jadakiss, and Sheek Louch at Vibe.com ! Holly Holliday revisited the classic made famous by Stevie Nicks on latest episode. By Aly Semigran Gwenyth Paltrow on “Glee” Tuesday Photo: FOX Gwyneth Paltrow is back, Gleeks, and she’s brought the legendary Stevie Nicks with her. After weeks of waiting, the Academy Award-winning actress, who has more recently been spending her time performing onstage at various awards shows, including the Oscars and the Grammys , finally returned to reprise her “Glee” character, flighty substitute teacher Holly Holliday. During her turn on Tuesday night’s (March 8) episode, titled “Sexy,” Paltrow, who made a lasting impression last time around thanks to her giddy (and squeaky-clean) take on Cee Lo Green’s “Forget You,” took on an entirely different sound when she sang the moving Fleetwood Mac classic “Landslide.” Accompanied by twangy guitars and a banjo, Paltrow drew on her country music chops (heard most recently in her 2010 drama “Country Strong”) as she covered the timeless tune. But even before getting the “Glee”/Gwyneth treatment, “Landslide,” written by Nicks, has long been considered a treasure of the Fleetwood Mac catalog. In 1973, 25-year-old Nicks penned the song during a stay in the snowy mountains of Colorado. Although there have been various theories regarding who — or what — the song is about, the singer set the record straight during a visit to VH1’s “Storytellers” in 1998. “Everybody, everybody seems to think that I wrote this song about them — everybody in my family, all my friends, everybody,” Nicks said on the show. “And my Dad, my Dad did have something to do with it, but he absolutely thinks that he was the whole, complete reason that it was ever written.” She went on to explain just how the song came to be, “[Bandmate] Lindsey [Buckingham] and I went up to Aspen and we went to somebody’s incredible house and they had a piano and I had my guitar with me and I went in their living room, looking out over the incredible Aspen sky and I wrote “Landslide.” The song, which includes such lyrics as “I saw my reflection in the snow-covered hills/ ‘Till the landslide brought me down,” would become a turning point in the careers of Nicks and collaborator Buckingham, who was also her boyfriend at the time. As she told the “Storytellers” audience, “Three months later Mick Fleetwood called on New Year’s Eve 1974 and asked us to join Fleetwood Mac.” “Landslide” was initially released on Fleetwood Mac’s self-titled 1975 album, but it wasn’t actually released as a single (despite being a fan favorite) until 1998, when a live version of the song appeared on the Fleetwood album The Dance and hit airwaves. It peaked at #10 on Billboard ‘s adult contemporary chart and hit #51 on the Hot 100 that year. The sentimental and deeply personal song, with its simple, yet effective guitar chords and lyrics like “Well, I’ve been afraid of changing/ ‘Cause I’ve built my life around you” found its way into the hearts and onto the records of other inspired artists, most notably the Smashing Pumpkins and the Dixie Chicks. The Smashing Pumpkins released their version of “Landslide” on their 1994 B-sides album, Pisces Iscariot. The cover went on to be one of the rock band’s most-beloved tracks and even had the approval of Nicks herself. As she told fans during a 1998 online chat with SonicNet, “There’s nothing more pleasing to a songwriter than [someone else] doing one of their songs.”[‘Landslide’] also led me to being friends with Billy [Corgan] and the possibility that we’ll work together,” she said of the Smashing Pumpkins frontman. “Over this song, there’s been this incredible connection … he reached out … I believe that my poetry is really meant for everyone, no matter what age.” Nearly 10 years later, chart-topping country trio the Dixie Chicks created their own rendition of “Landslide.” Released on their 2002 album, Home, the trio’s cover also became a favorite among fans. With its debut on Glee, “Landslide,” proves that it continues to be a song that speaks to many generations, moving listeners years after Nicks first shared the song with the world more than 35 years ago. Spears wants one more tryst with her ex on the Femme Fatale song. By Jocelyn Vena Britney Spears Photo: Ethan Miller/Getty Images Last month, Britney Spears teased a snippet of her Femme Fatale track “Inside Out.” Now, a bit more of the sexy track, including some of the song’s reported lyrics, has hit the Net. In the new 30-second teaser for the song, posted on MuuMuse.com , fans are given a taste of not only part of the chorus, but also part of one of the song’s bridges, which features a booming mid-tempo beat. Spears, in her signature style, sings, “You touch me and it’s breaking me down/ and me down, and me down, and me down/ I’m telling you, let’s just give it up and get down/ and get down, and get down …” On the breakup track’s chorus, she sings, “So come on/ Won’t you give me something to remember?/ Baby shut your mouth and turn me inside out/ Even though we couldn’t last forever, baby.” Other lyrics seem like a switched-up version of those previously released. Neither set of lyrics has been confirmed as the album version. “Said you’re gonna be here in a minute/ Sitting in the mirror getting pretty/ Gotta look my best if we’re gonna break up/ Gotta look my best if we’re gonna break up,” the reported lyrics read. The lyrics go on, “I can hear you knocking at the front door/ And I know exactly what you came for/ Try to say goodbye but it’s hot and heavy.” The previously reported lyrics were: “Said you’re gonna be here in two minutes/ Sitting in the mirror getting ready/ Gotta look my best if I wanna break up/ Gotta look my best if I wanna break up/ I can hear you knocking at the back door/ And I know exactly what you’re here for/ Trying to say goodbye but I’m not that ready.” Related Videos MTV First: Britney Spears’ ‘Hold It Against Me’ Premiere Related Photos Britney Spears’ ‘Hold It Against Me’ Pop-Culture References Related Artists Britney Spears
