Eminem: "I Had To Learn To Write And Rap Again"

MC discusses the effects of his deadly drug addiction with New York Post . By Gil Kaufman Eminem Photo: Jeff Kravitz/ FilmMagic How bad was Eminem’s descent into prescription drug addiction? It not only nearly robbed him of his life , it scrambled his brain so badly that he literally had to learn how to rap again, he revealed to the New York Post . On the eve of his historic two-night stand at Yankee Stadium with Jay-Z #8212; and his two VMA wins #8212; the paper spoke to Slim Shady, 37, about his tumble into drug addiction and the long, hard road to redemption on his hit album Recovery . “I had to learn to write and rap again, and I had to do it sober and 100 percent clean,” Em said, explaining the more mature, focused nature of his rhymes on Recovery . “That didn’t feel good at first … I mean it in the literal sense. I actually had to learn how to say my lyrics again #8212; how to phrase them, make them flow, how to use force so they sounded like I meant them. Rapping wasn’t like riding a bike. It was [as much] physical as mental. I was relearning basic motor skills. I couldn’t control my hand shakes. I’d get in the [recording] booth and tried to rap, and none of it was clever, none was witty and I wasn’t saying it right.” The rapper recalled taking his first Vicodin when he was 24 or 25, back before he could afford anything he wanted. “It was easy in the beginning,” he said. “I didn’t have the money to get really involved in drugs. I’d do them when somebody offered them to me. As my career took off and the crowds got larger and life got faster, I reached out for that sh– more and more. I used it as a crutch to calm my nerves. Especially the sleeping pills.” But as his addiction deepened, the drugs began affecting his art, stifling his creativity, shutting off his brain and making him so lazy he preferred watching TV to making new tracks. He said that while listening to albums such as 2004’s Encore , he can hear how high he was in the music. “I think the drug use was obvious,” he said. While late partner Proof tried to get him off the pills, Em said even hearing deep concern from his childhood best friend wasn’t enough to get him to come clean. “He’d say what was on his mind,” Marshall said of Proof. “But as close as he was, it didn’t matter. I wasn’t ready to listen. There wasn’t a person who could tell me I had a problem. What came next was a nearly four-year hiatus during which the rapper first went to rehab, but then relapsed and settled into a drug funk that he was only beginning to come out of when he released last year’s album Relapse . In retrospect, he realized that there were some problems with the record. “I wasn’t disappointed when I put it out. When I felt that was later, when I was reassessing my work #8212; trying to figure out why my songs didn’t sound like they used to sound,” he said. “The further I got away from Relapse , I was able to hear the problems with all the accents I was using to slip in and out of characters, and how the serial killing didn’t work. The joke was over #8212; I ran it into the ground.” He realized the problem was an obvious lack of “personal honesty” on the tracks, a situation he rectified on Recovery with such hit tracks as “Not Afraid” and the Rihanna collabo “Love The Way You Lie.” Once his head finally cleared, Em said, he was a new man, which might explain why he ditched plans to make Relapse 2 and start over with Recovery . “When I got clean and sober, it was like I was a kid again,” he said. “Everything was new. Not to sound corny, I felt like I was born again. I had to learn my writing skills. I was relearning how to rap. I didn’t know if my MC skills were intact. But everything was fun and suddenly I started feeling happy. I hadn’t felt happy for a long time.” Related Photos The Evolution Of: Eminem Related Artists Eminem

Bozell Column: Charlie Daniels, Unsung Singing Hero

In recent years I’ve come to know Charlie Daniels personally, enough so that I can say with confidence that this man just isn’t looking for tributes. But for all that Charlie has done for this country and its fighting men and women, he deserves every honor that comes his way. It was some thirty years ago when I first caught a Charlie Daniels concert.  He was the back-up to the Marshall Tucker Band at the old Capital Centre outside Washington DC, and that night, he stole the show. When he finished his blazing set the audience erupted and brought him back for an encore. When the Marshall Tucker Band finished their rather good performance, it made no difference: the capacity crowd roared for yet another performance from Charlie Daniels. It’s a metaphor for his life. At a time when he should, deservedly be disappearing into the shadows, he’s back – with the crowd roaring once again.  Despite recovering from a stroke and nearing his 74th birthday, Charlie still plays about 100 concerts a year, including Sean Hannity’s “Freedom Concerts” to benefit the children of our fallen and disabled U.S. soldiers through Ollie North’s Freedom Alliance. So much has Charlie become ingrained in the “Freedom Concerts” (he performed in all eight shows this year) and in the effort to support our military worldwide that he deserves his own tribute. He is America’s unsung singing hero. It would be nice if patriotism were in style in the music industry. It is so in the country music universe but in other circles there is no quicker way to become a pop culture pariah than following this path. Months after 9/11, ABC anchor Peter Jennings scratched out country singer Toby Keith from an Independence Day special because his songs were deemed too “mean” in their anger at our attackers. NBC put on country singer Steve Earle to sing sympathetically about American Taliban fighter John Walker Lindh and his prayers for martyrdom. The Dixie Chicks publicly declared their embarrassment with President Bush for his declaration of war against terrorism and were hailed by the elites. That’s what one does to earn accolades. In recent years I’ve come to know Charlie Daniels personally, enough so that I can say with confidence that this man just isn’t looking for tributes. One gets the feeling that at his age, having accomplished so much, he just doesn’t need them. He does it because he loves America and wants to honor the military by performing at the “unique and heartwarming” Freedom concerts to entertain crowds full of “hard-working, God-fearing patriotic folks, the salt-of-the-earth middle Americans who have fought our wars, raised good citizens, and kept the wheels of progress moving forward in this nation for over 200 years.”  “Patriotism to me is always in style, but now – especially now – we need a little shot in the arm,” he says.  He remembers that it can take a catastrophe to make people remember their common national bond: “9/11 was definitely a wakeup call to everybody about our country and about how precious it is – about what can happen here and what did happen here. It never happened here before, and it showed we’re a lot more vulnerable than we used to be. So as we go along, we forget about those pictures of the planes crashing into the trade towers and all the things that went on that day.” In 2006, CBS “Early Show” weatherman Dave Price asked him why at his age he was performing for soldiers in Iraq. Charlie’s answer was precious: “I can’t carry a gun…you know, I can’t fight, but I can darn sure carry a guitar and pick, so that’s why I’m here.” On CBS last year, Price recalled, “With all the great acts that are generous enough to give their time, when Charlie Daniels steps in front of these soldiers and sailors and Marines, it’s like… unreal.” The Charlie Daniels Band has performed for U.S troops all over the world, not just in Iraq, but everywhere from Germany and Bosnia to South Korea to Kyrgyzstan and Uzbekistan. Their brand-new album, “Land That I Love,” underlines a strong theme in Charlie’s music. That’s a snapshot of his career, an apt description of a love affair with his country that Charlie Daniels has expressed in music for over a half-century.     Daniels was welcomed into the Grand Ole Opry Hall of Fame in 2008 and the Musicians Hall of Fame in Nashville in 2009. The Opry honor was announced while he was working for charity again, picking and fiddling for the Christmas For Kids benefit at Nashville’s Ryman Auditorium. Martina McBride walked on stage with a small gift box containing the honor. But Charlie has brought a much larger basket of gifts to this country and its fighting men and women. He deserves every honor that comes his way. Those of us who can consider Charlie Daniels a friend are honored that way.

Angelina Jolie’s ‘Gravity’ Role Reportedly Offered To Natalie Portman

Jolie dropped out of the sci-fi drama last week. By Adam Rosenberg Natalie Portman Photo: Pascal Le Segretain/Getty Images Darren Aronofsky’s “Black Swan” premiered at the Venice Film Festival last week, and critics are still buzzing over the ballet-centric thriller and star Natalie Portman’s standout performance. Also in the news last week was Angelina Jolie’s departure from Alfonso Cuaron’s sci-fi drama “Gravity,” in which she was set to star alongside Robert Downey Jr. With the role vacated, a long list of potential replacements surfaced, including “Swan” star Portman. Now it seems that Portman may be the top choice to step in for Jolie. The young star received a formal offer from Warner Bros., according to The Hollywood Reporter . The next step is for her to read the script and make a decision. “Gravity” is an “$80 million [budgeted] 3D survival story,” which Cuaron will direct. The male and female leads play astronauts who are stranded after a disaster leaves their space station inoperable. Downey’s role is a small one in comparison to the one Portman is now up for — the story primarily revolves around her character’s desire to get back to Earth, where her daughter is waiting. Portman already has a 2011 jam-packed with work. She’ll be promoting three features — medieval stoner comedy “Your Highness,” romantic comedy “No Strings” and Marvel superhero summer blockbuster “Thor” — as well as continuing development on the adaptation of “Pride and Prejudice and Zombies,” which David O. Russell is writing/directing and Portman will produce/star in. THR also reports that Terence Malick is after the young actress for a role in a “Jerry Lee Lewis-related project” that he is developing with Brad Pitt, and that Tom Stoppard is seeking her out for yet another project. Rihanna Debuts New Single, ‘Only Girl (In The World)’

Club banger premiered on Ryan Seacrest’s radio show Tuesday morning. By James Dinh Rihanna Photo: WireImage After going deep and dark on her last album, Rihanna has returned to the dance floor with her new single “Only Girl (In The World).” The song, which premiered early Tuesday morning (September 7) on Ryan Seacrest’s radio show, plays off the title of her Last Girl On Earth tour and was produced by the Norwegian production team Stargate, who were also behind her hits “Don’t Stop The Music” and “Hate That I Love You.” On the high-energy track, Rihanna yearns for her lover to keep her at the center of his attention over a pulsing electro beat. The singer’s voice remains silky on the verses, then bursts out on the song’s monstrous chorus. “Want you to make me feel like I’m the only girl in the world/ Like I’m the only one that you’ll ever love/ Like I’m the only one who knows your heart/ Only girl in the world,” she belts. “Only Girl” is a departure from “Russian Roulette,” the stark lead single from her 2009 album Rated R . The new track only furthers speculation that the singer’s fifth album, Loud , will contain material that isn’t as dark as the songs on her last full-length. Back in June, producer Sean Garrett told MTV News that he was working with Rihanna on material that was “very positive and very explosive. Heavy in the club.” Last week, Ri tweeted at Seacrest a hint that new music would drop soon : “In less than 10 dayz ima send u sumn special,” she wrote, “and ur gonna play it OVER and OVER, like I’m the only girl in the world!” What do you think of Rihanna’s new single? Lady Gaga Previews New Song, ‘Living On The Radio’

Gaga previewed the piano ballad at a show in St. Paul on Monday night. By Gil Kaufman Lady Gaga Photo: Kevork Djansezian/ Getty Images Lady Gaga gave her Little Monsters another sneak peek at her upcoming album on Monday night during a show in St. Paul, Minnesota, when she pulled back the cover on the song “Living on the Radio.” The gentle piano ballad has a nostalgic feel. In it, Gaga gives herself a kind of pep talk about fame and fortune, throws a loving shout out to her adoring fans and pats herself on the back for finally realizing her ambition of getting on the radio. “Baby, you must be free/ Keep living on the radio/ That’s your dream,” sings Gaga, who at the age of 24 has already charted six #1 hits between her debut, The Fame, and its sequel, The Fame Monster, as well as notching 25 million singles downloads and near ubiquity on the radio over the past 18 months. “Baby, you’ve got a friend/ And so many little monsters/ Keep living on the radio/ And when there’s nowhere to go/ And all your friends are gone/ And you’ve only got your daddy to call/ You’re gonna be alright, honey/ Because your songs are on the radio.” In the classic tradition of the road tune, Gaga laments the loneliness of living out of a suitcase and lonely nights spent away from home. It helps that, in her case, she’s traveling on a “road paved in gold,” which clearly makes it a bit less of a drag. There are also nods to champagne, caviar and sold-out shows, which also presumably make a tour bus that much easier to manage. It’s the second song from Gaga’s still-untitled album, which the singer has been previewing during her Monster Ball Tour , coming on the heels of “You and I,” which she debuted in late June at Elton John’s White Tie and Tiara ball. It’s unknown if either song will make the cut on the disc, which Gaga has described as “utter liberation” and frequent Gaga producer RedOne said will be “shocking.” What do you think of Gaga’s new song? VV Brown Nabs ‘Degrassi’ Cast For Video

‘To me, the live show is almost the most important component within my career,’ she tells MTV News. By Joel Hanek VV Brown Photo: MTV News VV Brown has started her career by defying expectations. As a musician, the Brit has toured the world in support of her debut album, which she not only sang on, but also played instruments, produced and wrote. In addition to her music career, the Northampton native has dabbled in everything from modeling to writing comic books. Summarizing her personality, Brown said: “I’m a creative person.” Her eclectic musical background shows how she generated her sound. As a child, she was classically trained as a pianist and learned to sing in her church choir. Later, Brown began playing in bands, and at age 15, she toured Japan with a punk group. A few years ago, she was signed by the same team that brought Amy Winehouse to Island Records. Although she’s been described as everything from retro to indie to doo-wop, Brown said she doesn’t want to be boxed in to any particular label and prefers the broader term “alternative pop.” “Whatever I do, there will always be an alternative edge,” Brown explained. Last year, the singer released her debut album, Travelling Like the Light, in the U.K. and is now promoting the U.S. release of the album. The effervescent LP bounces around from ’50s swing (“L.O.V.E.”) to orchestral-sounding rock anthems (“Back in Time”). One of the album’s most popular singles, “Shark in the Water,” has been featured on TV shows like “The City” and “Ugly Betty,” but fans may have taken notice of her latest video for the song , which features the cast of the newest season of the hit teen show “Degrassi: The Next Generation.” Like many of the songs on Travelling Like the Light, “Shark in the Water” creates the juxtaposition of an upbeat melody providing the canvas for melancholic lyrics: “It’s about a relationship when you’re anxious about something and something’s not quite right. A sense of paranoia,” Brown said. Brown has toured consistently this year, providing support for a diverse group of acts. Earlier this year, she toured the States with Swedish electronic-infused indie outfit Little Dragon then went on to support Pink on the U.K. leg of her Carnival tour. Currently, the singer is accompanying Maroon 5 on their trek to stadiums across the U.S. In her energetic live act, which features a full live band and spectacular hats and masks, Brown sometimes peppers in an unexpected cover, such as Drake’s “Best I Ever Had” or Kings of Leon’s “Use Somebody.” “To me, the live show is almost the most important component within my career,” Brown said, “because it’s the opportunity to actually do what this whole thing is about — and that’s actually play live music.” After wrapping up her dates with Maroon 5, Brown will embark on her own headlining tour this fall in France. Swizz Beatz Talks ‘Going Into Overdrive’ To ‘Make The Best’ Records

‘When you’re working on albums, nobody sleeps,’ the energetic producer says of projects with Kanye West, Mary J. Blige and more. By Jayson Rodriguez Swizz Beatz Photo: Bryan Bedder/ Getty Images Swizz Beatz has been busy in the studio lately, working on numbers for Kanye West, N.E.R.D., Mary J. Blige and, of course, his own solo album, Haute Living. The multiplatinum producer has been tweeting about his long nights recently, but he told MTV News that when you’re inspired by a project, there’s just no sleep until completion. “When you’re working on albums, nobody sleeps,” he explained of all the work piled on his plate. “The excitement of being in the moment of music and having that pressure on you — you got a lot of people waiting on that project, you not gonna sleep either. You want to get it right in your mind, [so] you don’t have an appetite, you’re not tired. You go into overdrive … to make the best thing possible. “That shows how it goes when you work with real artists, you work until it’s done,” Swizz added. “Sometimes it gets overdone [ Laughs ].” Over the weekend, Swizz and Blige connected in the studio and completed four records, according to the Ruff Ryder alum’s Twitter messages. He told MTV News that at least one of the songs would see the light of day this week. While Swizz said he’s producing a number of songs for her new project, he also revealed that Blige might appear on one track from his forthcoming LP. While holed up in a New York studio earlier this month, Swizz managed to collaborate with Kanye West on his “Power” remix. His studio session with Pharrell happened to overlap with Kanye’s and the three producers wound up working on one another’s projects by the end of the night, Swizz said. “We were in there working on multiple things, [Kanye] was working on a song for my album, I was working with N.E.R.D. in another room for their album, and then the ‘Power’ remix was still in the works,” Swizz explained. “So, at the end of the night, everybody just ended up in both rooms. It was just going from one joint to the other and everyone showing respect to everyone’s craft. It was super-dope.” Who else would you like to hear on a Swizz Beatz collabo? Britney Spears May Cover ‘Me Against The Music’ On ‘Glee’

Pop star tweeted a photo showing her and castmember Heather Morris sporting looks from Madonna video. By Mawuse Ziegbe Heather Morris and Britney Spears on the set of “Glee” Photo: Facebook It appears viewers may get a taste of Madonna in Britney Spears’ “Glee” episode. Spears, who has been sending out updates from the set of the Fox megahit, tweeted a picture of herself in a scene reminiscent of her Madonna collaboration, “Me Against the Music.” In the picture, Spears faces “Glee” castmember Heather Morris, who is decked out in a suit and blue shirt similar to the gender-bending look the superstar singer sports in the 2003 video. Instead of reprising her original look, though, Spears appears to be taking on Madonna’s role, donning an all-white outfit reminiscent of Madge’s look in the clip. The singer accompanied the picture with a Twitter missive referencing the lyrics from the uptempo track: “All my GLEEKERS in the crowd, Grab a partner take it down.” In addition to possibly revamping “Me Against the Music,” the upcoming Britney-tribute episode will feature the smash hit that started it all. Jenna Ushkowitz confirmed to MTV News earlier this month that Lea Michele will perform a version of ” … Baby One More Time.” Ushkowitz also revealed that fans may see a match-up between the “Circus” superstar and the show’s in-house Brittany. “Some old Britney, some new Britney, some Brittany of our Brittany from the glee club. So it should be funny,” Ushkowitz said. “We’re really excited. I love Britney Spears.” Madonna didn’t participate in the making of her “Glee” tribute episode but Spears appears to be having fun on the set. “We love GLEE! Its GLEEKERIFIC!!!” Spears tweeted on Thursday (August 19). The singer also tweeted about her first day of filming on Wednesday and sent out another picture. “What’s up GLEEKS? Having so much fun on set!!” Spears typed. “Can’t wait for you guys to see the episode!” What songs do you hope will turn up in the Britney Spears “Glee” episode? Let us know in the comments below! Soulja Boy Tell’em Calls Justin Bieber’s YouTube Game ‘Crazy’

‘For him to be younger than me and have that amount of people tune in to him,’ he says on ‘RapFix Live.’ By Jayson Rodriguez, with reporting by Sway Calloway Soulja Boy Tell’em Photo: Sohyung Kang/ MTV News Does Soulja Boy Tell’em have to watch his back online? Justin Bieber has taken SB’s digital playbook (YouTube, Twitter, etc.) and used it to catapult him to success. But when the two Twitter rivals — SB has more than 2 million followers to Bieber’s gang of more than 4 million — connected to shoot a Nickelodeon movie earlier this year they discovered they were actually fans of each other’s work. “He told me how he liked my songs and stuff like that,” Soulja Boy revealed during “RapFix Live” on Thursday (August 19). “And I was really going off the stuff I saw on YouTube,” he told host Sway of the Biebs. “His YouTube views was up there, and for me coming off of YouTube, that’s crazy … for him to be younger than me and have that amount of people tune in to him.” But while SB didn’t make any plans, at least on-air, to collaborate with Bieber, he did accept an offer to record together from last week’s “RapFix Live” guest, Lloyd Banks. Meanwhile, the 20-year-old rapper is putting the finishing touches on his forthcoming album, The DeAndre Way, which is set for a fall release. His tentative next single is the Boi-1da-helmed “Speakers Going Hammer.” “Basically, it’s all about the sound of the music,” SB told MTV News last month about the track. “I got bars on this one. First verse, second verse, all bars — another anthem, as far as the hook. The hook is catchy. The video is gonna match the song perfect. And it’s another hit.
