Obama Birther Claims Are ‘Ludicrous’ And ‘Embarrassing,’ Kevin Kline Says

‘The Conspirator’ actor critical of the polarizing effects of the controversy over where the president was born. By Eric Ditzian Kevin Kline Photo: Stephen Lovekin/ Getty Chatter about where President Obama was born is suddenly back in the headlines, echoing through the halls of Congress and the newsrooms of cable channels. Earlier this year, Republican House Speaker John Boehner said it wasn’t his responsibility to tell Americans what to think about the so-called “birther” controversy that posits that the president isn’t a natural-born citizen of the United States. And Donald Trump has been telling anyone who will listen that he thinks Obama is hiding something about the origins of his birth and might have been born in Kenya. All this political hot air has gotten under the skin of Kevin Kline, who stars in “The Conspirator” — a cinematic retelling of an actual conspiracy, this one surrounding the assassination of Abraham Lincoln. “It’s ludicrous. It’s embarrassing,” the veteran actor told MTV News. “This country is so polarized and our leaders in Washington are so polarized. How can the nation come together when the paradigm that is presented to us — our models, the men that we’re meant to look up to — are playing such a ridiculous competition? “When the Speaker of the House says, ‘I’m not saying that I think Obama is not an American citizen, but I can’t tell others’ — that is craven and petty,” Kline added. “It’s all about spin and ‘let’s keep the polarization because we want to be in office in 2012.’ What about the good of the people?” Putting the good of the people and the health of the country ahead of short-term political gamesmanship is at the core of “The Conspirator,” the latest directorial effort from Robert Redford. Kline plays Secretary of War Edwin Stanton, who pushes for a military tribunal — rather than a civilian trial — to try a suspect in the Lincoln assassination conspiracy. The allusions to the country’s post-9/11 treatment of detainees is impossible to ignore, all the more so because much of Stanton’s dialogue feels like it could have been uttered by a Bush administration official just a few years ago. Now, like then, what gets lost in the rush to convict and the attempt to heal emotional wounds, Kline said, is “our common humanity.” What we’re left with is two sides mindlessly butting heads. “North against South, Republican against Democrat,” he added. “Blue against Red, my high school against your high school. “We’re all subject to the time we live in, and in moments of stress and chaos — at the end of the Civil War or post-9/11 — people are not always at their most rational or their most just or their most evenhanded,” Kline maintained. “That’s why we have things in place, like our judicial system, like our Constitution. We need those rules and strictures because we are human.” What do you think about the Obama “birther” controversy and Kline’s opinions about it? Share your thoughts in the comments.

2011 Federal budget

House Speaker John Boehner (R-OH) make remarks to the media as Congressional negotiations continue in an attempt to break an impasse in funding the federal budget through the end of the fiscal year to avoid a government shutdown, on Capitol Hill, Washington, DC, April 8, 2011. With a government shutdown looming in hours, the White House and Congress worked furiously on Friday to reach a U.S. budget deadlock and prevent a deadlock that would idle hundreds of thousands of workers. Congressman Christopher “Let’s Get It Poppin On Craigslist” Lee And Wife Are Trying To Work Things Out

We feel ad for this poor lady, but at least they’re attempting to work through it despite this Chris Lee character’s ridiculous actions : The “humiliated” wife of shamed Craigslist Congressman Christopher Lee has rushed to his side and is “hoping to work things out” with him at an ultra-private Florida enclave, sources close to the family said. Michele Lee, 44, bolted the couple’s Buffalo home Thursday and flew to Florida, where she and Lee, 46, are holed up inside the gates of Key Largo’s exclusive Ocean Reef Club, where Lee’s dad, Patrick, owns a $4 million home, insiders told The Post. “She’s crushed — this was supposed to be her prince charming,” a friend of Michele said yesterday. Michele had been concerned about the upstate lawmaker’s extended solo stays in Washington, and had tried to get him to spend more time in Buffalo, said another source. Revelations that Lee had trawled Craigslist for trysts — and even sent one would-be paramour a cheesy shirtless picture of himself — are a particularly harsh blow for Michele, whose first marriage to a high-school sweetheart ended after he cheated on her. “She picked a bad boy twice, which is a shame, because she’s a smart woman without a mean bone in her body. She’s absolutely humiliated,” said a friend. “She was so proud of him and what he’d accomplished.” Lee’s dad, wealthy businessman Patrick Lee, is also apoplectic over his son’s spectacular career flameout, friends said. The respected, straight-laced Patrick had previously warned his son about his philandering, and was “particularly enraged” over the “sloppiness of the situation” and the photo, a source noted. “Patrick is mortified, [and] pushed his son to resign immediately to curtail any extended embarrassment for the family,” the source said. “He said, ‘End it quick.’ ” In Washington yesterday, GOPers were also hoping for a quick end, but that was out of the question as media scrutiny of Republican sex lives ratcheted up. House Speaker John Boehner has had at least two meetings warning congressmen to keep their pants zipped and their partying under control, sources said. Ladies, would you attempt to do the same if your man was caught looking for tail on Craigslist??? Source

John Boehner Cries. Again. A Lot.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ufYmnD3fhfk Looks like the repubs have a crybaby as the speaker of the house and he sounds drunk too!! John Boehner, the incoming Speaker of the House, the most powerful Republican in Washington, and a man who in a matter of days will be second in line for the presidency, has twice had an opportunity to introduce himself to the American people. And on both occasions, he cried – a lot. There is a tradition of politicians crying in America, but it's not a proud one. It almost always ends with getting beat at the polls. Already some of the incoming speaker's supporters are getting worried that the Ohio Republican's penchant for showing his emotions makes him look weak. Others, however, have championed Boehner for his willingness to be real. “This is not exactly the first impression you want to make to the American people,” said Republican strategist Ed Rollins. “We've seen his sensitive side enough already. But a sensitive side isn't what the country wants to see in a strong leader. He's got to show strength and leadership and a willingness to stand up to the president. You never saw Pelosi crying” On Sunday night in a lengthy “60 Minutes” interview, the Speaker-designate broke down twice, talking about his rise from humble beginnings as a janitor and again in talking about his hope for children. “Family – kids — I can't go to a school anymore. I used to go to a lot of schools. And you see all these little kids running around. Can't talk about it,” he stammered. Last month, on election night as returns came in and it was clear Republicans had won the House and Boehner would be speaker, he also cried. “It's full-bore crying,” said interviewer Leslie Stahl. “It's not just little tears and he does it a lot.” Some Democrats and women have suggested there is a double standard. When Republicans cry, they are “compassionate conservatives” but crying women and Democrats furthers the stereotype that they're weak. Speaker Nancy Pelosi, the Democratic woman who Boehner will replace, has never cried in public. added by: navider

Gainor Column: MSNBC Host Scarborough ‘Attacks Palin’ in Civility War

This week's news quiz is a toughie. If you blame Sarah Palin for the GOP's failure to take the Senate, have 'always loved NPR,' oppose Arizona's immigration law as “unacceptable and un-American' and called Republican candidate Sharron Angle a 'mental patient,' then you must be: A) Former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, B) Lefty loon and entrepreneur Arianna Huffington, C) An MSNBC host or D) An elitist who 'will help headline the launch next month of a new national group dedicated to restoring civility in politics.' read more

Newt Gingrich: I Will Not Go to Debate With Olbermann or Matthews Moderating

Newt Gingrich on Sunday said that if he runs for president in 2012, he would not participate in a debate that had MSNBC's Chris Matthews or Keith Olbermann moderating. Instead, the former Speaker of the House told C-SPAN's Steve Scully that he'd prefer to just have an open, informative dialogue between the candidates with only a timekeeper (video follows with transcript and commentary): read more

Joe Scarborough Likes Pelosi’s Feisty Response to His MSNBC Colleague, Mimics Her Punching Him

Joe Scarborough apparently likes Nancy Pelosi's toughness, given her response to his MSNBC colleague pressing her as to why she would make a good House Minority Leader after losing 60 seats. MSNBC's Luke Russert asked the Speaker why she should lead the House Democrats if her approval rating among independents is at 8 percent. Pelosi delivered a testy response, and Scarborough admitted his glee over the tone. “I think she's a disaster for the Democrats politically right now…but I like that fight,” he remarked. “C'mon, boom!” he expressed as he threw imaginary punches, pretending to be Pelosi punching down Russert. “Hey Luke, come here, Luke, look, boom! Luke, look, look, boom!” Later on Thursday's “Morning Joe,” Scarborough was pressed by Times columnist Andrew Ross Sorkin as to why he was praising such a polarizing figure when he has promoted a platform of bipartisanship and moderate politics. The “Morning Joe” co-host has conducted multiple campaigns on his own show for calmer rhetoric in the country's political sphere and has denounced political extremism.

Boehner’s Bull

Poor John Boehner is being demonized by Obama….whah whah whah…..as rightfully he should. Boehner is a an elitist and it doesn't matter one iota that he “pulled himself up from the bootstraps….kind of story to bring a tear to the eye of a GOP voter.” Boehner is and enemy to Freedom and Liberty in America….he is the world kind of demon that could ever get to be Speaker of the House…..pray that this never happens. Boehner and the media elite that plant these stories should be called out for what they are….complete and utter BULL. added by: jubal

Bozell Column: Here Comes The Mud

How long ago it seems now that Barack Obama was inaugurated, and the Great Uniter championed “hope over fear, unity of purpose over conflict and discord. On this day, we come to proclaim an end to the petty grievances and false promises, the recriminations and worn-out dogmas that for far too long have strangled our politics.…[T]he time has come to set aside childish things.” It seems the president spoke prematurely. With his approval ratings sinking, and Democratic prospects tanking, Obama began the fall campaign in Milwaukee with a petulant tone about his adversaries: “They talk about me like a dog. That’s not in my prepared remarks, but it’s true.” Precisely which Republican was suggesting the president was a household pet? Who cares? He knew he wouldn’t be challenged. Perhaps he was tired and a little dyslexic, and was thinking about the media: “They talk about me like a god.”  The Great Uniter realizes – finally – that the nation has tired of his attacks on George Bush, so a new White House strategy has emerged.  The next day, Obama was in Ohio, and attacked the potential next Speaker of the House, John Boehner, eight times in his remarks. He even claimed that since Boehner opposed an $800 billion “stimulus,” he was against firemen saving lives. “Mr. Boehner dismissed these jobs we saved – teaching our kids, patrolling our streets, rushing into burning buildings – as ‘government jobs,’ jobs I guess he thought just weren’t worth saving.” This can be dismissed as the usual worn-out liberal hyperbole – vote for “stimulus” or you oppose policemen and firemen and teachers – but when it comes from the alleged Great Uniter? No worries: the media are repeaters, not reporters. What’s really alarming is how eagerly the “news” networks take Obama’s liberal cues and start savaging the Republicans with even greater ferocity. Rep. Boehner appeared on CBS’s “Face the Nation” on September 12, and host Bob Schieffer started whacking him over the head about being a smoker, and being in cahoots with the tobacco industry. “I’m not objective about this. I’m a cancer survivor. I used to be a heavy smoker. Do you still smoke?” Boehner said yes. Schieffer then announced that Boehner had taken $340,000 from the tobacco industry. “How do you square that with the fact that cigarette smoking is the leading cause of preventable deaths in this country; 435,000 people — their deaths are linked to cancer. That’s one in five. How do you justify that in your own mind?” When Boehner calmly said Americans have a right to smoke, or overeat, Schieffer scoffed: “Well, I mean, they have a right to shoot themselves if they choose to.” This is not the way servile Schieffer greeted Obama in several Obama interviews on “Face the Nation.” He’s never pressed Obama in a puritanical tone as to why our Chain-Smoker- in-Chief hasn’t kicked the habit. Instead, in their last face-to-face a year ago, Schieffer was feeling Obama’s pain about “the sort of meanness that has settled over our political dialogue” and how “President Carter is now saying that he thinks it’s racial. Nancy Pelosi says it could be dangerous. What do you think it’s all about?” Democrats in these last few weeks before Election Day know that the public remains enraged over ObamaCare and thinks the “stimulus” was an enormous boondoggle. So they’re slinging personal mud at an astonishing rate. In Nevada, wildly unpopular Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid has a new ad with a state trooper charging that Republican Sharron Angle favors Nevada being “a safe haven for domestic abusers.”  They say this because they know there is no accountability. Instead, several anchors were attacking Newt Gingrich for insisting that Obama’s anti-American, that he’s channeling his Kenyan father’s opposition to American imperialism. CNN’s Anderson Cooper could have used a sedative as he began his piece thusly: “Newt Gingrich ignites an uproar, saying President Obama is essentially a Kenyan con man who tricked Americans into voting for him and his secret radical agenda. So, are GOP politicians rushing to condemn his remarks tonight? And is anything out of bounds these days?” Well, yes. Apparently, saying Sharron Angle favors wife-abusers is “in bounds” with Cooper and his liberal colleagues, as is everything else a Democrat says. In 1994, I said the Republicans were in for a vicious fall campaign, not just from their Democratic opponents, but from a very hostile media. Just as it seems that 2010 could turn out to be a bigger Republican tidal wave than 1994, it’s quite possible that the viciousness of the Obama-loving media will be even greater this year than it was against Gingrich & Co. Call it their very own Contract on Conservatives.
