The singer turned 30 this year, marking the landmark birthday on December 2 with a fan-voted MTV News tournament that crowned the Best Britney Video of All Time . But her 30th year also proved to be an incredibly successful period in her career. For the first time in a while, she seemed comfortable being the pop megastar that she is. More than a decade into her career, Spears re-emerged as a Femme Fatale, giving fans a fist-pumping album, embarking on a flashy tour and dropping more memorable music videos. Britney Spears fandom was reenergized as the singer came out of her shell, opening up about this phase in her career as well her personal life in several high-profile interviews. So it’s probably not surprising that Spears will cap off the year at #4 on MTV News’ Top Newsmakers of 2011 list, just behind Lil Wayne. “When I was younger, I was busy, busy, and I was always singing and dancing all the time. I was just really creative,” she recalled in the MTV special “I Am the Femme Fatale.” “That’s when my mom realized I’m a really creative person.” She let that creativity shine over the past 12 months. Jason Alexander on Britney Spears Engagement: So FAKE!

Britney Spears’ engagement last week was welcome news to millions of fans and celebrities alike, drawing praise from the likes of 50 Cent and even K-Fed . Jason Alexander, however, does not approve. Back in 2004, Brit’s childhood friend personified the term 15 minutes of fame … though it was more like 55 hours. They got married on a whim in Vegas. Their union was annulled less than three days later, but Jason Alexander likely got it in at least once – and continues to throw in his two cents about Brit. In short, he’s not a fan of Jason Trawick. “I know everyone wants me to be happy about this, but I am not,” Alexander, who is now in training for the World of MMA fighting competition (apparently), told Us . “I think it’s fake and I think people are afraid to say it.” “If you look at all the pictures between them there is no connection. They look like they are going through the motions. It seems like a answer to the court thing.” The singer is currently under the conservatorship of her father Jamie Spears, and Trawick, who once served as the star’s agent, meets Jamie’s stamp of approval. “Sort of a nice way to sew it all up; [Britney] marries her handler,” Alexander sniped. “That way she always has someone controlling her. It’s really sort of sad.” Or you’re really sort of bitter. Somehow we doubt he has much contact with Spears these days, has met Jason Trawick , or has any clue what he’s talking about.

Britney Spears’ Engagement Begins ‘A New Chapter’

It’s a ‘good step’ toward happiness in her life, Jordan Miller of Britney fan site Breatheheavy.com says. The two spent the weekend in Las Vegas, where Spears flashed her Neil Lane engagement ring, as they celebrated their upcoming nuptials as well as Trawick’s 40th birthday. Friends and family have been showing their support and well-wishes for the couple’s upcoming wedding, including Spears’ ex-husband Kevin Federline , who told TV Week magazine that he was “really happy for her.” Yet it seems that no one is as happy for Spears than her die-hard fans. MTV News spoke with Las Vegas-based webmaster Jordan Miller, who runs Spears’ biggest fan site, BreatheHeavy.com , and he told us just how thrilled he is about the news. “I was pretty excited for Britney when I found out she was engaged,” Miller said. “I think it’s a good step for her to have some sort of relationship where she can share her feelings and thoughts about her life, so I’m happy for her I think it’s really good for her.” And it seems all of his followers agree. “The overwhelming reaction from fans about the news of Britney’s engagement is that they’re really happy for her,” Miller said. “They think it’s such good timing for her, to finish the tour and kind of have a break and be able to start a new chapter in her life. So I think the majority of fans are really happy for Britney and that it’s definitely a good step for her.” The news doesn’t come as a big shock to Miller, since rumors of Britney’s engagement have been swirling for months. “I wasn’t surprised about the news of Britney being engaged. There were rumors for the last six months pretty much saying he was going to do it in December,” Miller said of the couple, who have been dating since 2009 . “So it’s cool to see that it actually happened and she’s going to get married.” Details have not been released as to when Britney will tie the knot, but it seems Miller already has the perfect wedding gift in mind from all of her fans. “If fans could get Britney a cool present, it would be a vacation to a tropical island where she didn’t have to be around anyone but Jason,” Miller said. And on Friday (December 16), sources close to the pair and a mysterious tweet from the star herself confirmed that the couple is engaged . Trawick had already been working with the star as her agent at William Morris Endeavor Entertainment when they began dating in 2009. They went public with their romance when they showed up hand-in-hand to the 2010 Grammy Awards. That May, the two decided to separate their business and personal relationships, and it was confirmed that Trawick would no longer be representing Spears . The pair have always been pretty low-key. In an interview with Ryan Seacrest this March, the pop star opened up about their life together. “We’re really normal,” she said. “We just like to watch movies; we work out a lot; we take walks.” In May, Spears told Harper’s Bazaar, “I’ve thought about both [marriage and kids],” saying that tying the knot with Trawick could happen “if the timing was right.” And in an interview with Us Weekly in April, Spears gushed about life with Trawick. “We have such a great time together! He makes me laugh, and we are so comfortable being ourselves,” she said. “Maybe [I’ll marry again]. Never say never!” In August, Spears and Trawick walked the red carpet at the 2011 MTV VMAs, and Britney later thanked Trawick when she took the stage to accept her Moonman for Best Pop Video for “Till the World Ends.” While the two have remained relatively private, they gave fans a peek at their personal life when they played the lead roles in Britney’s “Criminal” video . The video focuses on a fictional love affair between their characters, who go on a crime spree that leads to a steamy encounter. Director Chris Marrs Piliero said Trawick “killed it.” This will be Britney’s third marriage. She was married to Jason Alexander for 55 hours in 2004. Later that year, she married back-up dancer Kevin Federline; the two divorced in 2006. Federline and Spears have two sons, Jayden James and Sean Preston. Britney Spears Photo: Ethan Miller/ Getty Images After taking her tour around the world, Britney Spears wrapped up the elaborate Femme Fatale trek on Saturday in Puerto Rico. But before she took the stage, Spears celebrated her big 3-0 with a party on Friday night. The belated birthday bash took place a week after her December 2 birthday. The pop star tweeted all about the party, giving fans a picture of her blowing out the candles on her elaborate, multitiered birthday cake. “Having an amazing time at my end of tour/ belated bday party!” she wrote on Twitter on Saturday. “Thx so much to the Conrad Condado Plaza for giving us a place to celebrate this tour & my 30th bday last night – we all loved the party!” But the fun hardly ended with the party. For her final performance of the Femme Fatale shows the following day, Spears was joined by some of her family and friends onstage. “That’s a wrap! The Femme Fatale tour is officially over 🙁 Gotta give some end of tour shout outs,” she tweeted, before showing some online love to her pals. “To [my assistant] Brett [Miller] and her fierce dance moves! She surprised me on stage tonight during ‘Big Fat Bass.’ To all my dancers – u all are basically family. Thx so much for an unforgettable year! Look at this good looking group. Britney Spears Celebrates Birthday, End of Tour With Family in Puerto Rico

Britney Spears’ 30th birthday was December 2, but the singer blew out the candles on her birthday cake on Saturday, the final night of her Femme Fatale tour. “Having an amazing time at the end of my tour,” she Tweeted. “Belated bday party!” Sons Sean Preston and Jayden James helped her mark her final night in San Juan. Spears, who wrapped up her whirlwind concert extravaganza, said she’s prepared for the holidays, as well. “Looks like my xmas list is complete!” she wrote . Happy birthday, Britney! Aside from wrapping presents, there may be one more item on Spears’ holiday list. Sources say her boyfriend Jason Trawick, is ready to pop the question . Widely credited with helping bring Brit back from the brink, her former agent (he’s now just her partner in love) has been a constant in her life for years. What her next career move is remains to be seen, but she’s earned some rest after this tour – and hopefully she’ll have plenty to celebrate this month!

Virginia Tech Shooting Leaves Police Officer Dead; Officials Believe Suspect Also Killed

A shooting at Virginia Tech University has left two people dead, including a police officer, and prompted the entire school to be placed on lockdown today. A Virginia Tech police officer was fatally shot on the campus by an as-yet-unidentified gunman, for whom a sweeping search was conducted for four hours. Here’s the local press conference detailing the events of this afternoon: Virginia Tech Shooting Press Conference Around 4:30 p.m. EST, the Blacksburg, Va., school announced on its Twitter feed that “law enforcement agencies have determined there is no longer an active threat or a need to secure in place. Resume normal activities.” Police said that the shooting occurred shortly after noon, after the police officer made a routine traffic stop in the Coliseum parking lot near McComas Hall. During that stop, a person who wasn’t involved in the traffic stop approached and shot the officer, then fled toward a nearby parking lot, officials said. When another investigating officer circled back to approach the person – described as a white male – that person was dead of a gunshot wound. A Virginia state police spokesman said that police didn’t shoot the second person, and he wouldn’t say whether the person was the suspect. It’s unclear if the search is ongoing, but he said investigators feel “confident we located the person,” and “you can kind of read between the lines.” The incident comes after a shooting spree in which a Virginia Tech student, Cho Seung-Hui, shot dead 32 people before killing himself in April 2007. Michelle Duggar Suffers Miscarriage With 20th Child

Jim Bob and Michelle Duggar announced some sad news today. A month after they announced her pregnancy with their 20th child , their doctor was unable to find a heartbeat and told her she suffered a miscarriage. “After the appointment, we came back home and told the children,” says Michelle , 45. “We had just been talking about baby names last night and they were getting excited about naming a boy or a girl. It has been a real sad disappointment.” She says the family will select a name after they know if the baby, miscarried in the second trimester, was a boy or girl, and then plan to have a funeral. “I feel like my heart broke telling my children,” says Michelle. “They have all been so excited about this baby and looking forward to April coming around and having a new little one in our arms. That was the most difficult.” Still, she adds that the family’s faith perseveres: “The Lord is the giver of life and he can choose when that life is ready to go on and be with Him.” The stars of TLC’s 19 Kids and Counting weathered myriad medical ordeal with their youngest daughter, Josie-Brookyln, born in December 2009. This is actually her second miscarriage. Michelle lost a baby during her second pregnancy. She was taking oral birth control then, citing that as a big reason the pair decided they’d leave the number of children they have “up to God.” In light of these events, should the Duggars still try for a 20th?
