Friday Box Office: Green Hornet Has Sallow Opening Night, Dilemma Self-Destructs

On the weekend of the Golden Globes, a couple of prize turkeys were trotted out at the box office to little effect. Seth Rogen’s long-delayed Green Hornet opened at a weak number one, while Vince Vaughn’s Dilemma barely made a splash at number two. But hey, The King’s Speech opened wide at number four and did okay! Your Friday box office is here.

‘Green Hornet’ Flies Past Friday Box-Office Competition

Slacker superhero flick scores $11.1 million first day in theaters. By Mawuse Ziegbe Seth Rogen and Jay Chou in “The Green Hornet” Photo: Sony Pictures “The Green Hornet” flew into theaters with a big Friday debut. Seth Rogen’s turn as California rich kid turned baddie-battling vigilante scored $11.1 million its first day in theaters. The sizable Friday haul is presumably a reassuring figure for co-writer and star Seth Rogen, who battled tons of e-hate from fans of the masked hero in the time leading up to the film’s release. “It’s something that [writing partner] Evan [Goldberg] would constantly have to remind me of throughout the process, in that this is kind of exactly what we thought would happen,” Rogen told MTV News recently. “From the second we thought of doing a movie like this, I remember talking about it like, ‘Everyone’s going to think it’s going to be insane and terrible and we’ll just have to keep our heads down and make it, and then it’ll come out and then people will slowly see that we weren’t nuts and that it was actually a good idea.’ ” Behind “Hornet” is another funnyman vehicle, “The Dilemma,” starring Kevin James and Vince Vaughn. The comedy about a guy who’s forced to decide whether to inform his best buddy that his seemingly perfect wife is creeping, debuted with $6.1 million in ticket sales. The Hollywood heavyweight-packed Western “True Grit” kicked off the weekend in third place. Featuring Matt Damon, Jeff Bridges and recent Critics’ Choice Movie Award-winner Hailee Steinfeld, the Coen brothers’ latest epic picked up $3.2 million. Friday’s figure kicks the action flick’s total estimated tally to about $118 million. “The King’s Speech,” which features newly minted Critics’ Choice-winner Colin Firth, won the fourth-place slot. The true story of a reluctant royal’s game-changing wartime address nabbed $2.44 million — a number which boosts the film’s total estimated gross to nearly $38 million. The dance drama “Black Swan,” which features Critics’ Choice Best Actress Natalie Portman, took the fifth-place spot after being slightly outpaced by “Speech.” The flick rang up $2.42 million on Friday, just thousands of dollars behind the Firth vehicle. Matt Damon Recognized At Critics’ Choice Awards For Water.org Charity

‘True Grit’ actor receives Joel Siegel Award. By Aly Semigran Matt Damon accepts the Joel Siegel Award at the Critics’ Choice Awards Photo: Steve Granitz/ Getty Images While Matt Damon has taken the back seat to his “True Grit” co-stars Jeff Bridges and Hailee Steinfeld so far this awards season, the actor was acknowledged Friday night (January 14) by the Broadcast Film Critics Association during the 16th Annual Critics Choice Movie Awards for his humanitarian efforts. In a segment presented by Jimmy Kimmel and Emily Blunt, Damon was given the fourth annual Joel Siegel Award for Service to the Community. While Kimmel provided comic relief, joking that the Oscar winner is “the greatest guy in the world,” the actor received serious accolades for his charity, Water.org. Blunt, who stars with Damon in the upcoming film “The Adjustment Bureau,” explained that the organization Damon co-founded with Gary White helps to “provide developing countries with safe drinking water and sanitation by partnering with local communities.” As Blunt delivered the staggering statistics that less than 1 percent of the Earth’s water is drinkable and more than 1 billion people don’t have access to clean water, Kimmel continued to kid with Damon, telling him, “Sean Penn is actually in Haiti right now … carrying things!” Kimmel, who gets the last laugh at Damon’s expense every night on his late-night show, then cried foul on Damon’s many awards, mocking, “You know how much water he wasted in that shower scene in “School Ties”? A lot!” Damon, playing as good a sport as ever to Kimmel’s jabs, then took the stage to accept his award to a standing-ovation audience that included his “Good Will Hunting” collaborator Ben Affleck. After taking a shot back at Kimmel — “I literally have no idea why you’re here,” he quipped — Damon got serious about receiving what he described as “a wonderful honor.” The actor acknowledged the work of late film critic Joel Siegel, who, as Damon told the crowd, “Believed that you should use celebrity to improve the lives of others and he lived that way. So, I’m really honored to get this in his name.” Though plenty of the segment included joking around with Kimmel, Damon got very serious when he delivered the news that, “Every 15 seconds, a kid somewhere on planet Earth dies because they don’t have access to clean water and sanitation.” Calling that information “disgusting and unacceptable and unnecessary,” he added, “These are issues we’ve known how to solve here for 100 years in our country. … Just imagine if we cured AIDS tomorrow and in 100 years people were still dying of it, 3 million of them a year. It’s just really ridiculous.” Damon concluded his speech by thanking his partner, White, and informed viewers that by donating $25 on the Water.org website, they could give a child “clean water for life.” He then promised that they would change the fact that 1 billion people do not have clean water and offered to viewers, “Feel free to join us.” Related Videos Critics’ Choice Movie Awards Red Carpet Interviews Related Photos 2011 Critics’ Choice Awards Celebrity Candids 2011 Critics’ Choice Movie Awards Show Critics’ Choice Movie Awards Red Carpet 2011

Golden Globes Preview: Kings Vs. Geeks, Charlie Sheen And Sea Bass

Get the inside scoop on the Best Picture horse race, host Ricky Gervais and more before Sunday’s show, which airs live at 8 p.m. ET. By Eric Ditzian Justin Timberlake and Jesse Eisenberg in “The Social Network” Photo: Sony Pictures On Sunday evening, Hollywood will gather for the 68th Golden Globe Awards , an annual shindig at which celebs in attendance are at least as interested in re-filling their wine glasses as they are in watching to see who wins. Emceeing the shenanigans once again will be Ricky Gervais , who last year guzzled beer onstage, hilariously eviscerated Mel Gibson and generally won rave reviews for his keep-the-show-rolling comedic talents. Gervais will have a new crop of Hollywood royalty to dis this year. Thus far, the 2011 awards season has been shaping up to be a two-horse race between “The Social Network” and “The King’s Speech” for top prize. But it’s anybody’s guess which film will triumph at night’s end in the Best Motion Picture – Drama category; even ear-to-the-ground prognosticators are split on the outcome. Other categories are more clear-cut. You can take it to the bank now: David Fincher will nab Best Director for “Social Network,” “The Kids Are All Right” will take home Best Motion Picture – Comedy or Musical and Colin Firth will triumph as best dramatic actor for “King’s Speech.” Oh, and if Natalie Portman doesn’t win best dramatic actress for “Black Swan,” it’s a sure sign of the apocalypse. The Globes air live on Sunday at 8 p.m. ET, and as always, MTV News will be reporting from the red carpet and post-Globe parties, so be sure to check out MTV.com for all of the latest awards-show developments. Also keep an eye out for our interviews with the night’s winners and losers. For added enjoyment, play a game of “Spot the Drunken Celeb.” The 1,300 guests will be sitting around tables, knocking back the booze and, if they’re smart, filling their bellies with food too. On this year’s menu is an appetizer of grilled eggplant and marinated artichoke, topped with a blend of edamame and red pepper hummus. The entr

Who Scored Big in Week 11 of SNL’s Not-Ready-for-Prime-Time-Player Relevancy Poll?

It was a peculiar week for Saturday Night Live , with the cast pretty much resigned to taking a back seat to the manic comedic stylings of host Jim Carrey; except for the cold open and “Weekend Update,” Carrey was the focal point of every sketch. As a result, this week’s SNL Relevancy Poll is thrown more than a bit off-kilter: Instead of cast members standing out, what we saw instead were cast members just trying to keep up with their host. And if there’s anything we know about SNL , it’s that it rarely (if ever) functions at its best as a one-man show.

Golden Globes Tap Robert Pattinson, Jennifer Lopez As Presenters

Matt Damon will present the Cecil B. DeMille lifetime-achievement award to Robert De Niro during the January 16 awards show. By Kara Warner Robert Pattinson Photo: Soul Brother/ FilmMagic With the 68th annual Golden Globes a little more than a week away, it’s time to find out what famous faces will be seeing onstage January 16 from the Beverly Hilton Hotel — in addition to the nominees, of course. The Hollywood Foreign Press Association announced Tuesday (January 4) via Twitter the names of three presenters. The lucky lady and gentlemen are: new “American Idol” judge Jennifer Lopez, “Twilight” superstar Robert Pattinson and “True Grit” actor Matt Damon. It was not announced for which categories Lopez and Pattinson will present, but Damon will present the Cecil B. DeMille lifetime-achievement award to Robert De Niro. The annual event, which is one of the few awards shows to recognize achievements in both television and film, is always a star-studded affair. Katie Holmes, Blair Underwood and Josh Duhamel announced the nominations back in December, which singled out “The King’s Speech,” starring Colin Firth, Geoffrey Rush and Helena Bonham Carter, with seven nods in categories including Best Motion Picture – Drama and Best Director. “Black Swan” and “The Social Network” were the next most-nominated films, with four nods each. Many critics agreed that the most surprising nominations went to Johnny Depp and Angelina Jolie for the “The Tourist,” which received lukewarm reviews. In the world of television, “Glee” was once again the most-nominated TV series, followed by critical darlings and award favorites “30 Rock” and “Mad Men.” The 68th annual Golden Globe Awards will air live Sunday, January 16, at 8 p.m. ET, hosted by awards-show scene stealer and “Office” creator Ricky Gervais .
