Golden Globes Tap Robert Pattinson, Jennifer Lopez As Presenters

Matt Damon will present the Cecil B. DeMille lifetime-achievement award to Robert De Niro during the January 16 awards show. By Kara Warner Robert Pattinson Photo: Soul Brother/ FilmMagic With the 68th annual Golden Globes a little more than a week away, it’s time to find out what famous faces will be seeing onstage January 16 from the Beverly Hilton Hotel — in addition to the nominees, of course. The Hollywood Foreign Press Association announced Tuesday (January 4) via Twitter the names of three presenters. The lucky lady and gentlemen are: new “American Idol” judge Jennifer Lopez, “Twilight” superstar Robert Pattinson and “True Grit” actor Matt Damon. It was not announced for which categories Lopez and Pattinson will present, but Damon will present the Cecil B. DeMille lifetime-achievement award to Robert De Niro. The annual event, which is one of the few awards shows to recognize achievements in both television and film, is always a star-studded affair. Katie Holmes, Blair Underwood and Josh Duhamel announced the nominations back in December, which singled out “The King’s Speech,” starring Colin Firth, Geoffrey Rush and Helena Bonham Carter, with seven nods in categories including Best Motion Picture – Drama and Best Director. “Black Swan” and “The Social Network” were the next most-nominated films, with four nods each. Many critics agreed that the most surprising nominations went to Johnny Depp and Angelina Jolie for the “The Tourist,” which received lukewarm reviews. In the world of television, “Glee” was once again the most-nominated TV series, followed by critical darlings and award favorites “30 Rock” and “Mad Men.” The 68th annual Golden Globe Awards will air live Sunday, January 16, at 8 p.m. ET, hosted by awards-show scene stealer and “Office” creator Ricky Gervais . 9 Lessons Learned From Lifetime’s The Craigslist Killer

The Lifetime Network — otherwise known as the guilty pleasure center of your cable package — premiered The Craigslist Killer on Monday, its highly-publicized docudrama about the good-looking Boston medical student convicted of murdering masseuses he found on the Internet. Like any good Lifetime film, Killer included a romance, the poorly-acted betrayal of a pretty blond heroine who could not pick up a clue with a forklift, and the subtext that all men — especially the good-looking ones you don’t suspect — are evil. Ahead, I sift through the discarded Kleenex and chocolate wrappers to uncover nine lessons learned from the film.

Please Give, I Love You Phillip Morris Among Surprise Writers Guild Award Nominees

So, too, did Please Give and I Love You Phillip Morris , two surprise nominees helped out by the fact that many favorites, including The King’s Speech and Toy Story 3 , were deemed ineligible because of rule violations. All the Films You Expected to Get Nominated by the Producers Guild Got Nominated

Well, almost all of them. For those keeping score at home, the only film not nominated by the Producers Guild that’s also on the list of Best Picture candidates over at the Movieline Oscar Index was Winter’s Bone ; the beloved indie failed to make the cut, replaced instead by Ben Affleck’s The Town . Otherwise, status quo: The Social Network , The King’s Speech , The Fighter , Black Swan , The Kids Are All Right , Inception , Toy Story 3 , 127 Hours and True Grit all received nominations from the PGA, meaning they’re one step closer to fulfilling their predicted Oscar glory. Brett Favre Makes Annual Retirement Speech

It’s official. Brett Favre has retired from the NFL. The quarterback legend made the announcement at a press conference Sunday. He is currently listed as questionable for training camp in August. “One season does not define me,” said Favre, referring to a lackluster final year with the Vikings, and possibly the Jenn Sterger scandal as well. Asked how this is different from his previous nine retirements, he cited his myriad injuries, adding “I know it’s time” and “I have no regrets.” Watch Brett Favre’s retirement speech here: Brett Favre Retirement Speech (2011)

Will Sony Play the Karate Kid Card in its Oscar War Vs. King’s Speech?

As noted in today’s edition of The Broadsheet, a writer at VF. com has made a compelling (or at least intriguing, or at least time-killing) case for The King’s Speech being little more than a well-produced riff on the original 1984 version of The Karate Kid . On the one hand, tropes is tropes; there are only so many original stories in the world, and eventually everything will have something in common. On the other… I mean, “The unorthodox, uncredentialed teacher is contrasted with a cruel — but more respected — educator.” Or, “The teacher helps fill a void left by the student’s absent father.” Is this the beginning of a covert Sony vs. Weinstein Oscar-season war?

DVD: The Best Colin Firth Performance You’ve Probably Never Seen

As awards season kicks into high, and pundits and audiences alike unpack their adjectives to describe Colin Firth’s performance in The King’s Speech , it seemed like the right time to mention one of his wonderfully charming and funny turns that was barely seen in this country — his starring role in Fever Pitch (out of print on DVD but available from Netflix ). No, not the Drew Barrymore/Jimmy Fallon Fever Pitch , although both films were based on the same novel.

Stephanie Zacharek’s 10 Best Movies of 2010

There’s probably no good reason to read any movie critic’s Top 10 list, but lots of people — including myself — read them anyway. Let’s not be falsely modest about it: It’s an honor to be able to compile a list and to have a place, online or otherwise, to moor it. But everyone who cares about movies has his or her own private list, posted online or not, which may include some or all of the usual suspects in a given year (like The Social Network or The King’s Speech , pictures which lots of people, though not all people, seem to love) as well as a selection of fiercely protected personal favorites.

The Social Network, The King’s Speech Top Roger Ebert’s 10 Best List

Not to be outdone by the Golden Globes , SAG and pretty much every single critics group this side of San Diego , Roger Ebert has placed The Social Network and The King’s Speech atop his ten-best list for 2010. “All of the personalities and values in The King’s Speech are traditional The characters project considered ideas of themselves; The Social Network , in contrast, intimately lays its characters bare. From one man speaking at a distance through the radio, to another man shepherding hundreds of millions through a software program, the two films show technology shaping human nature.” Wonder if these two have what it takes to be Oscar nominees. (Kidding!) [ Roger Ebert’s Journal ]
