Networks That Found Bad Omens at CPAC Skips Pelosi Facing Heckler Protest at Liberal Confab

For the last several years, TV news stars have found electric moments at the Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC) worth predicting how Rush Limbaugh and other conservatives would soon be driving the Republican Party into an electoral ditch. So it was noteworthy that no network except Fox News found it worth a story that House Speaker Nancy Pelosi got booed and heckled Tuesday afternoon at a liberal version of CPAC. Dana Milbank of The Washington Post relayed on Wednesday that Pelosi tried to engage the hecklers unsuccessfully, then pledged to continue her speech: And she did, for an excruciating half-hour. The hecklers screamed themselves hoarse, dominating Pelosi’s speech through her concluding lines: “I want to say thank you to Campaign for America’s Future for your relentlessness, for your dissatisfaction, for your impatience. That’s what I see every day in my district.” Political movements tend to unravel gradually, but on Tuesday this one seemed to be imploding in real time. As the “tea party” right has gained strength, Obama’s hope-and-change left has faded. The frustration has crystallized at the gathering this week of demoralized activists.  On Wednesday, PBS NewsHour anchor Jim Lehrer whistled right past Pelosi’s heckled event, reporting on coming environmental-regulation bills: “In the meantime, members of the House began working on their own proposals. Speaker Nancy Pelosi has asked committee chairs to draft new regulatory legislation by the Fourth of July.” MSNBC’s Ed Schultz suggested he would discuss it on Wednesday night’s Ed Show: “Also, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, well, she got heckled. Not by the Tea Partiers, but by progressives. I`ve got a ‘Rapid Fire’ response to all of that.” Later, he listed it as a topic again: Let’s get some “Rapid Fire” response from our panel on these stories tonight. Liberal activists are not happy with Congressional Democrats. At a progressive conference, a group angry about the lack of action on disability rights booed, heckled and shouted down House Speaker Nancy Pelosi. The Tea Partiers got a big win in Nevada. Sharron Angle will challenge Harry Reid this fall. And Sarah Palin says President Obama should call her for advice on how to handle the oil disaster? But in the midst of fighting about Angle and Palin, Schultz never returned to Pelosi.

WH Correspondents Board to Evaluate Seating Rules for Opinion Journalists

Editor’s Note : The following originally appeared at NewsBusters sister site CNSNews.com . The fallout from Helen Thomas’ controversial comments about Israel and Jews, which led to her immediate retirement on Monday, has prompted journalists covering the White House to re-evaluate the role of an opinion columnist in the White House press corps.   Thomas, 89, the so-called dean of the White House press corps, covered the White House as a news reporter for United Press International (UPI), beginning with the Kennedy administration in the early 1960s. In 2000, she left UPI to become an opinion columnist for Hearst Newspapers. She has a front row seat at the White House press gallery with her name on it.   On Friday, June 4, a video surfaced of Thomas saying (on May 27) that Israel should “get the hell out of Palestine” and that the Jews should “go home” to “Poland, Germany,” and to “America and everywhere else.” After initially apologizing for the comment, Thomas announced her immediate retirement on Monday.   The White House Correspondents Association (WHCA) board issued a statement on Monday calling Thomas’ remarks “indefensible,” but the WHCA also said the matter raises legitimate questions going forward.   “[T]he incident does revive the issue of whether it is appropriate for an opinion columnist to have a front row seat in the WH briefing room,” the statement said. “That is an issue under the jurisdiction of this board.”   The WHCA will meet this week “to decide on the seating issue.”   In a separate statement on Thomas’ retirement, the WHCA board said, “Helen Thomas has had a long and distinguished career in journalism that is unrivaled, covering 10 presidents over the past 50 years.   “Along the way, she shattered many glass ceilings, including serving as the first female president of the White House Correspondents’ Association. We are saddened by her recent comments, but we commend her for a trailblazing career, and we wish her the best.”   The WHCA decides what news organizations obtain seating in the White House Brady Press Briefing Room. However, it is the White House Media Affairs office that issues credentials to reporters.   Thomas has been a long-time critic of many of Israel’s policies.   She made her most recent and career-ending comments , during the White House Jewish Heritage celebration on May 27, in an interview with Rabbi David Nesenoff of RabbiLive.com.    Thomas first said of Israelis, “Tell them to get the hell out of Palestine. Remember, these people are occupied and it is their land. Not Germany’s. Not Poland’s.”   The interviewer asked, “Where should they go? What should they do?”   Thomas said, “Go home.”   The interviewer asked, “Where is home?”   Thomas said, “Poland, Germany.”   The interviewer then followed up, “You’re saying Jews should go back to Poland and Germany?”   Thomas answered, “And America and everywhere else.”   The video of the interview surfaced last week. On Friday, June 4, Thomas issued a written apology.   “I deeply regret my comments I made last week regarding the Israelis and the Palestinians,” Thomas said. “They do not reflect my heart-felt belief that peace will come to the Middle East only when all parties recognize the need for mutual respect and tolerance. May that day come soon.”   However, Thomas announced she was retiring effective immediately on Monday, June 7.   During Monday’s press briefing, White House Press Secretary Robert Gibbs condemned Thomas’ remarks.   “I think those remarks were offensive and reprehensible,” Gibbs said. “I think she should and has apologized, because – obviously those remarks do not reflect certainly the opinion of, I assume, most of the people in here, and certainly not of the administration.”   Former George W. Bush Press Secretary Ari Fleischer and former Clinton White House counsel Lanny Davis, both Jewish, publicly called for Thomas to lose her job with Hearst Newspapers or for the WHCA to take away her front row seat.   The correspondents’ association board issued its first statement shortly after news of Thomas’ retirement.   “Helen Thomas’s comments were indefensible and the White House Correspondents Association board firmly dissociates itself from them,” the statement says. “Many in our profession who have known Helen for years were saddened by the comments, which were especially unfortunate in light of her role as a trail blazer on the White House beat.   “While Helen has not been a member of the WHCA for many years, her special status in the briefing room has helped solidify her as the dean of the White House press corps so we feel the need to speak out strongly on this matter,” the statement continued.   “We want to emphasize that the role of the WHCA is to represent the White House press corps in its dealings with the White House on coverage-related issues. We do not police the speech of our members or colleagues. We are not involved at all in issuing White House credentials, that is the purview of the White House itself,” the board added.   “But the incident does revive the issue of whether it is appropriate for an opinion columnist to have a front row seat in the WH briefing room. That is an issue under the jurisdiction of this board,” the statement continued. “We are actively seeking input from our association members on this important matter, and we have scheduled a special meeting of the WHCA board on Thursday to decide on the seating issue.”

How Did President Obama End Up At Kalamazoo Central’s Graduation?

Michigan high school won the Race to the Top challenge and a commencement speech from Obama. By Gil Kaufman President Barack Obama delivers the commencement speech for Kalamazoo Central High School on Monday Photo: Mandel Ngan/AFP/Getty Images Back in February, President Obama put out a challenge to graduating seniors all over the country: Prove that you did the best job meeting his Race to the Top challenge and he would deliver the commencement address at your high school. “Public schools that encourage systemic reform and embrace effective approaches to teaching and learning help prepare America’s students to graduate ready for college and a career and enable them to out-compete any worker, anywhere in the world,” the president said in a video message. “This is your opportunity to show me why your school exemplifies the best that our education system has to offer.” Education Secretary Arne Duncan added that the Race to the Top challenge was a chance for the nation’s schools to share their accomplishments and aspirations and for teachers, students and principals to show how they are putting education first. The key to the challenge was a four-question essay in which each school was asked to demonstrate how they were helping prepare students to meet the president’s goal of having the highest proportion of college graduates in the world by 2020. More than 1,000 schools submitted applications for the honor, with the White House Domestic Policy Council and Department of Education narrowing the list of finalists down to six high schools. Then the hard work really began, as each school encouraged supporters to weigh in to help them get into the winner’s circle. According to the White House, between April 26 and 29, over 170,000 short videos and essays were received from the six finalist schools, with President Obama selecting the national winner from the three high schools with the highest average ratings. The finalists included Blue Valley Northwest High School in Overland Park, Kansas; Clark Montessori in Cincinnati; Denver School of Science and Technology in Denver; Environmental Charter High School in Lawndale, California; Kalamazoo Central High School in Kalamazoo, Michigan; and MAST Academy in Miami. Kalamazoo Central’s “We Are the Giants” video ultimately came out on top. Backed by a community looking to rise above its economic challenges, the diverse student body of Kalamazoo Central showed that the Giants take preparing for college and a career seriously. Nearly 94 percent of Central’s seniors are headed to college, and for those efforts, they got to meet the president himself, first as a group when the seniors joined him in an intimate gathering before their commencement ceremony on Monday. “It was the most amazing thing ever that could ever happen to anybody,” one particularly enthusiastic student gushed, while another classmate chimed in, “That moment right there changed my life, just meeting the president.” And again on the graduation stage, when each student shook President Obama’s hand after he delivered his first-ever high school commencement address , as promised. In the speech, he lauded Kalamazoo Central’s students for their hard work, dedication and ingenuity and called the school a model for success in the 21st century. “It gives me great confidence to know that we’ve got such incredible young leaders that are going to be remaking the world in so many ways,” Obama said. “I’m here tonight because I think America has a lot to learn from Kalamazoo Central about what makes a successful school in this new century.” Get Schooled is a national program aimed at increasing high school and college graduation rates and promoting the importance of education, developed by Viacom in partnership with the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. ‘Glee’ Cheat Sheet: Catch Up On The Season Before The Finale

Get to know your Quinn-and-Finn from your Burt-and-Kurt, your New Directions from your Vocal Adrenaline and more. By Jean Bentley Puck and Mr. Schuester rock out together on the season finale of “Glee” Photo: Fox If haven’t yet gotten hooked on Fox’s hit show “Glee,” Tuesday night’s (June 8) season finale is as good a time as any to give it a shot, but you’re going to need a bit of a primer. As they say at the beginning of each episode, here’s what you missed all season on “Glee” : William McKinley High Spanish teacher Will Schuester recruited a big bunch of misfits and a couple of popular jocks and cheerleaders for the glee club, New Directions. Principal Figgins said they need to win Sectionals to become a permanent club, but Cheerios coach Sue Sylvester vowed to do everything she could to sabotage them. Theater nerd Rachel thought she and quarterback Finn were meant to be together, but he was dating Cheerio Quinn, who was the most popular girl in school and the president of the celibacy club until she got pregnant. Oops. She tricked Finn into believing he was the father when the baby daddy was really Finn’s BFF, football-playing bad boy Puck. Will’s wife Terri said she was pregnant, but she actually wasn’t and didn’t want to tell him the truth. She decided to adopt Quinn’s baby in secret and pretend she was still preggers. Of course, both lies blew up in their faces big time — Will and Finn found out the truth, and broke up with Terri and Quinn immediately. Then New Directions won sectionals and the show went on an agonizingly long hiatus. Puck dated Rachel, Mercedes, and Santana, but stuck by Quinn the whole time. Mercedes and Kurt, who recently came out to his surprisingly accepting widowed father, wanted more attention and joined the Cheerios. Coach Sylvester told Mercedes to lose weight, and Mercedes politely told her where she could shove it. But Kurt stayed on the team, and they consequently won their sixth consecutive national competition. Rachel and Finn started dating, but then she met Jesse St. James, the lead singer of rival glee club Vocal Adrenaline, their competition at Regionals (which incidentally, New Directions now has to win to remain at the school because Sue is blackmailing Principal Figgins with photos from when she kind of date-raped him). Jesse left his school and joined New Directions at the urging of Vocal Adrenaline coach Shelby Corcoran. Shelby wanted Jesse to convince Rachel to search for her birth mother, who happens to be — you guessed it, Shelby. Artie told Tina that his being in a wheelchair was kinda like her speech impediment, then they started dating. She confessed her speech impediment was fake, and Artie got mad for a while, but they got back together. Artie asked her to wear skimpier clothing, then apologized for being misogynistic. Principal Figgins asked her to wear different clothes because he was afraid she was a vampire, but she scared him out of it. Artie came to terms with the fact that he won’t walk again. Finn’s mom started dating Kurt’s dad, which was totally part of Kurt’s plan to get closer to Finn, whom he’s always sort of had a crush on. Then Kurt got mad that Burt and Finn started hanging out, so he tried to act manlier and wear lots of flannel to win his dad’s affection. But Burt reassured Kurt that he’d always love him no matter what. Awww. Once he was free from his terrible wife, Will started dating sweet guidance counselor Emma, who was previously engaged to Coach Tanaka. But Will and Emma decided they should first take a break to deal with their own issues. Will seduced Sue just to give her a taste of her own cruel medicine, then he felt bad about it and apologized. Sue’s very loving with her older sister, who has Down’s syndrome. She also has a big thing about Madonna . Maybe Sue’s not so tough after all. And that’s what happened on “Glee.” Will New Directions actually win Regionals? Will the Sue Sylvester who shows up to judge the contest be the impervious, badass Sue or the vulnerable, softer Sue? Are Will and Emma finally going to get together for real? And will Rachel learn that her relationship with Jesse was a setup? We’ll find out soon enough! What was your favorite episode of “Glee” this season? Talk about it in the comments. President Obama Delivers Commencement Speech At Kalamazoo Central High School

‘Be a part of something bigger than yourself,’ he urged the Michigan students, who won Get Schooled’s Race to the Top contest. By James Montgomery President Barack Obama speaks at Kalamazoo Central High School on Monday Photo: Whitehouse.gov In early March, students at Kalamazoo Central High School submitted a video to Get Schooled’s Race to the Top competition, a nationwide search to find the school most dedicated to making — as Get Schooled put it — “great strides on personal responsibility, academic excellence and college readiness.” More than 1,000 high schools across the country entered; Kalamazoo Central won. On Monday (June 7), the school finally received its prize: President Barack Obama showed up to deliver the commencement address for the class of 2010. And it was worth the wait. Delivering his first-ever high school graduation speech, President Obama lauded Kalamazoo Central’s students for their hard work, dedication and ingenuity and called the school a model for success in the 21st century. “It gives me great confidence to know that we’ve got such incredible young leaders that are going to be remaking the world in so many ways,” Obama said. “I’m here tonight because I think America has a lot to learn from Kalamazoo Central about what makes a successful school in this new century.” Obama earned cheers for those remarks and for another passage early in his commencement speech. He mentioned an article in the local newspaper that quoted a Central student named Kelsey Wilson saying that her school “never gets credit for what we do.” “Well, Kelsey, I’m here tonight because … I know, and America knows what you’ve got at Kalamazoo Central,” Obama said, singling Wilson out from the audience. “You are amazing. We know!” Obama got more than a few laughs and whoops when he admitted that, in his younger days, he “sometimes … partied too much” (“This is a cautionary tale; don’t be cheering when I say that,” he chuckled) but that he quickly learned that the only way to achieve lasting success in this world was through tireless dedication and hard work. And to that end, he also used the speech as an opportunity to give the class of 2010 some post-grad pointers (“Right now, you’re getting plenty of advice from everybody. Some of it’s helpful,” he joked. “And so I hate to pile on, but while I’m here, what the heck?”), urging them to never settle for instant gratification, take responsibility for their successes and failures, and to strive to expand their horizons — not just in the field of education, but in life as well. “Don’t just hang out with people who look like you or go to the same church as you or share the same political views. Broaden your experiences, because that’s how you’ll learn what it’s like to walk in somebody else’s shoes,” Obama said. “Be a part of something bigger than yourself … because there is work to be done, and your country needs you. We’ve got an economy to rebuild … we’ve got an oil spill to clean up, we’ve got clean energy to discover. … It’s going to be up to you. Pursue excellence in everything you do. After all, you are the Giants, and with the education you got here, there’s nothing you can’t do.” Before delivering the commencement address — which was held at nearby Western Michigan University, due to the large crowds — Obama met with Kalamazoo Central’s graduating class in a special ceremony. The school’s winning video (called “We Are the Giants” ) was selected as the winning entry by Obama and the Department of Education. Sandra Bullock Calls Scarlett Johansson ‘A Great Kisser’

Actress praises co-star Ryan Reynolds’ wife after their MTV Movie Awards lip-lock. By Kara Warner Scarlett Johansson and Sandra Bullock lock lips onstage at the 2010 MTV Movie Awards Photo: Jeff Kravitz/ FilmMagic We all expected Sandra Bullock to be sincere and graceful as she accepted her Generation Award at Sunday’s MTV Movie Awards. But the day after the show, we’re still buzzing about how sexy the speech was thanks to Bullock’s brief smooch with Scarlett Johansson . “Ryan [Reynolds] is right — Scarlett is a great kisser,” Bullock told UsMagazine.com after locking lips onstage with her co-star’s wife. Johansson seemed an odd choice to have among Generation Award presenters Bradley Cooper and Betty White , both former Bullock co-stars, especially since she refrained from offering any commentary on the celebrated star. While accepting the award, Bullock paused and addressed the oddity, asking Johansson point-blank why she was onstage. Johansson responded that she was there in place of her husband, Ryan Reynolds, who couldn’t be there to support his “Proposal” co-star. She coyly complimented Bullock for the really nice, really soft-looking kiss that earned her and Reynolds a Best Kiss nomination. She then slowly approached the honoree and proceeded to share a sweet lady kiss. “Now that we have done that, can we please go back to normal?” Bullock pleaded with the audience, turning attention to those affected by the devastating BP oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico. “Because therapy is really expensive. Go back to making fun of me, I don’t care. It’s time to get back to normal.” Easier said than done. The Sandra-Scarlett kiss is the talk of the town. When MTV caught up with Betty White , we wondered whether the “Golden Girls” star was jealous she didn’t also receive a smooch from Sandra. “No! To each his own!” White told MTV News backstage at the Gibson Amphitheatre. “Anywhere you’re near Sandra Bullock, you’re in good shape!” Will Ferrell also offered his two cents on what he thought was a clear Movie Awards 2010 highlight. “I can say Sandra Bullock and Charlotte,” meaning Johansson, he said when asked what he enjoyed seeing the most. He then semi-corrected his mispronunciation, “Scarlett Johansson. She goes by Charlotte, though — she usually drops the ‘S.’ ” Russell Brand chose to critique the kiss and suggest a more creative approach for next time. “I think one of them needed to invert for it to be of any real value,” he told MTV News. ” I’d like to suggest this script: It’s from a website called NomsTeachingTeens.com. Sandra can be a mom figure, and Scarlett would be a niece, and then they would do it, sexual-wise, with perhaps a puppet.” What did you think of Sandra and Scarlett’s lip-lock? The ‘Twilight’ Stars’ History With The MTV Movie Awards

From Kristen Stewart dropping her award to her near-kiss with Robert Pattinson, ‘The Twilight Saga’ has provided the awards show with many memorable moments. By Amy Wilkinson Anna Kendrick, Robert Pattinson, Kristen Stewart and Taylor Lautner at the 2010 MTV Movie Awards Photo: Getty Images As host Aziz Ansari joked at the close of the 2010 MTV Movie Awards, the “New Moon” sweep of all the categories surprised, well, no one. In fact, anyone who’s watched the Movie Awards over the past three years knows the vampire saga and the awards ceremony go together almost as well as a clumsy teen named Bella and the century-old bloodsucker who loves her. Months before “Twilight” hit theaters back in November 2008, under-the-radar stars Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart — wearing matching Ray-Bans — and co-star Cam Gigandet attended the 2008 Movie Awards to introduce an exclusive clip from the Saga’s first film during the pre-show — the pre-show! But by the time the trio and co-star Taylor Lautner appeared at the Video Music Awards a few months later to introduce “Twilight” soundtrack band Paramore, they’d gained plenty of buzz. In fact, many Twilighters were outraged when host Russell Brand supposedly interrupted Pattinson during his speech. Hordes of Twilighters took to the Web to express their frustration and anger at the host. Fast-forward to 2009’s Movie Awards and Pattinson, Stewart and Lautner had become worldwide superstars thanks to the runaway box-office success of “Twilight” and the ensuing “Twilight” mania sweeping the nation. “Twilight” scored five Golden Popcorns that night, including Best Movie, Best Female Performance for Stewart, Breakthrough Performance Male for Pattinson, Best Kiss for Stewart and Pattinson and Best Fight for Pattinson and Gigandet. “Twilight” nearly swept every category it was nominated in save for Best Song From a Movie, which went to Miley Cyrus instead of Paramore’s “Decode.” The cast’s appearance at the 2009 show garnered many memorable moments. While accepting her Golden Popcorn for Best Female Performance, Stewart famously fumbled her award, with it eventually thudding to the floor of the Gibson Amphitheatre stage (which is probably why one of the first things she did during her 2010 win was place the statue safely on the ground before her speech). Later, when Stewart and Pattinson won the honor for Best Kiss, the two torturously teased the audience with the possibility of a lip-lock. Pattinson took the gum out of his mouth, the two closed their eyes and leaned in, but before the pucker could take place, Stewart turned away yelling, “Thank you so much!” Though fans likely felt slighted by the Pattinson/Stewart almost-kiss, they were aptly rewarded later in the ceremony when the duo and Lautner debuted the first “New Moon” trailer, which Pattinson called “a thank-you to the fans.” A few months later at the 2009 VMA Awards, the stars doubly thanked fans by introducing an extended version of the “New Moon” trailer. At this year’s ceremony, the vampire saga finally completed its long-awaited sweep — not to mention, Twilighters got what they truly wanted: a quick onstage kiss between Bella and Edward, er, Stewart and Pattinson. Sandra Bullock Thanks The Troops At Spike’s Guys Choice Awards

Fans in the military named Bullock the Entertainer of the Year on Saturday night. By Jocelyn Vena On Saturday night, a day before Sandra Bullock’s appearance at the MTV Movie Awards to accept the Generation Award , the actress took the stage at Spike TV’s Guys Choice Awards, which air June 20. Dressed in a body-hugging leather dress, Bullock was there to accept the Troops Choice Award for Entertainer of the Year, chosen by members of the military. In the speech, Bullock thanked the fans who voted her to victory at the show. “Let’s be honest here, just for a moment. We’re all going to be honest, right?” Bullock began. “Did I win this for being entertainer of the year, or did I win this because of the spectacular I.E.D. [improvised explosive device] explosion that became my personal life? “It’s OK, because I would do it over and over again if it was to entertain our troops,” she added, as she thanked the men and women of the military for their service.
