The Spring Breakers trailer has FINALLY arrived, and it’s even more packed with girls and guns and bikinis and James Franco ‘s grimy braided hot mess than I’d ever dreamed. Also, the words “Spring Break” are spoken so many times in these two minutes of mayhem (I count 11 feverish utterances) that it’s seeping into my subconscious. Watch and whet your whistle for the March 22 opener after the jump and start working on your Franco-as-Alien Halloween costumes now. Franco may be the bizarro Riff Raff-ian centerpiece of Harmony Korine ‘s pic (shout out to Gucci Mane in the trailer!) but our restless antiheroines are played by Selena Gomez , Vanessa Hudgens , Ashley Benson , and Rachel Korine, who attempt to finance the best Spring Break ever by robbing a fast-food joint before Franco comes into the picture and makes their Vice Magazine -esque fantasies come true. While Lincoln campaigns hard for Oscar gold (and still racks up box office cash), Steven Spielberg has decided not to shoot his sci-fi blockbuster Robopocalypse in the spring as planned, multiple outlets report. The question is, will Spielberg — who notoriously told 60 Minutes he could direct another action movie in his sleep, as evidenced by Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull , zing! — stay onboard in the director’s chair or take up another project in the meantime? Robopocalypse , based on Daniel H. Wilson’s 2011 bestseller about an artificial intelligence-sparked apocalypse, was set to star Anne Hathaway and Chris Hemsworth , with a script by Cabin in the Woods ‘ Drew Goddard. Fox and DreamWorks had already set a release date of April 15, 2014 for the $100 million-plus tentpole. It’s not great news for the adaptation, but is this the end for Robopocalypse ? Here’s Deadline ‘s Mike Fleming as the voice of reason: “All I’m told is that there was no reason to rush Robopocalypse , and if Spielberg waited 12 years to get Lincoln right, this one can wait a big longer.” The robot game’s kind of a crowded field right now, anyway; Guillermo del Toro’s kaiju vs. mecha Pacific Rim is heading for theaters this July 13, and Michael Bay just hired this guy to star opposite Mark Wahlberg in his secondary trilogy-starter Transformers 4 . Tween idols on a crime spree, James Franco channeling Riff Raff, the ATL Twins, and love for the pop powerhouse that was ’00s-era Britney Spears … who can resist? Are we not human beings? Today Vulture ‘s got the U.S. poster debut to tease the Spring Breakers marketing wave that’s coming in the next few months, which will have me floating in a fluorescent fever of anticipation until March. Spring Breakers , which stars Ashley Benson , Selena Gomez , Vanessa Hudgens , and Rachel Korine as a foursome of coeds who decide to fund their spring break shenanigans by robbing a fast food restaurant, also reportedly has a release date of March 22 (NY/LA) via A24 Pictures. As for the new U.S. poster, there’s a decidedly more dangerous, leering sensibility here than in the previous Girls Gone Wild -party time materials and sneak peeks we’ve seen; the obscuring ski mask makes it so that you can’t tell which Spring Breaker belongs to that nubile body posing provocatively in a camera flash in the dark, exactly, and how do you feel about that, you perv? To paraphrase Godard: All you need for a movie is a girl in a Day-Glo bikini and a gun. And if you don’t know: “SPRING BREAKERS tells the story of four sexy college girls as they plan to fund their spring break getaway by robbing a fast food joint. Controversy has arisen in Warsaw, Poland as a result of a piece by Maurizio Cattelan. The Italian artist has created a statue of Adolf Hitler praying and placed it in the former Warsaw Ghetto, a location that saw numerous Jews killed by the dictator during his regime. It is titled “HIM,” is only visible from a long distance and is meant to force a contemplation on the nature of evil, according to organizers. However, Jewish advocacy group the Simon Wiesenthal Center doesn’t see it that way. The organization says the placement of the artwork represents “a senseless provocation, which insults the memory of the Nazis’ Jewish victims.” Adds the group’s director, Efraim Zuroff: “As far as the Jews were concerned, Hitler’s only ‘prayer’ was that they be wiped off the face of the earth.” The Nazis sealed off the Ghetto soon after conquering Poland. They forced Jews to live there in awful conditions, many passing away, while they awaited transportation to death camps. Fabio Cavallucci, director of the Center for Contemporary Art, which oversees the exhibit, says: “There is no intention from the side of the artist or the center to insult Jewish memory. According to Us Weekly , who reported the rumored engagement just after Christmas, she and Wissam Al Mana will wed this spring. Neither she nor her 37-year-old Qatari businessman love of 2.5 years have confirmed it, of course, and Janet – unlike some of her siblings – is very private. If she is engaged, don’t expect that you’ll necessarily see her make a big deal of it … but at least the superstar is wishing us a joyous holiday regardless.
The city of Los Angeles is holding its annual gun buyback event at two locations today in response to the mass shooting in Newtown , Conn., this month. In a campaign that probably wouldn’t inspire a Jesse James’ gun rant , LAPD officials don’t try to take away your guns – they basically buy them off you. The guns can be turned in anonymously, with no questions asked, in exchange for up to $100 in Ralph’s gift cards for handguns, shotguns and rifles. Assault weapons can fetch up to $200 in rewards cards at the grocery store. Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa created the gun buyback program in 2009. So far, it is credited with getting close to 8,000 firearms off the streets. Just last May, LAPD officials collected 1,673 firearms, including 53 assault weapons, 791 handguns, 302 shotguns and one anti-tank rocket launcher. Villaraigosa announced last week that the gun buyback, usually held in the spring, would be moved up to give Angelenos a chance to take “concrete action.” “Too often we wake up with another headline that reminds us we are too late,” Villaraigosa said at a news conference last week in response to the CT massacre. “In Los Angeles, we believe we should stand together.”
Christopher Chaney – the hacker who made many Internet users dreams come true by breaking into computers and posting photos of Scarlett Johansson nude and Mila Kunis nude online – has been sentenced to 10 years in prison. Law enforcement officials confirm to TMZ that the 36-year pled guilty to 9 felony counts this spring – among them: identity theft and wiretapping – and was ordered to pay $76,000 today in court to such stars as Johansson and Christina Aguilera. Chaney was arrested in October 2011 and actually got off lucky with this sentencing. At the time of his booking, Chaney was accused of violating the privacy of over 50 individuals; he actually faced over 120 years in jail as a result.
Eva Herzigová is five months pregnant with her third child, her agency Storm Models confirms to the Telegraph. She and husband Gregorio Marsiaj will welcome the baby in the spring. The new addition will join big brothers Philipe, 21 months, and George, 5. One of the original supermodels — best-known for her Wonderbra ads — Herzigova, 39, continues to be a name in the industry. She walked the runway just two weeks ago and is the new face of Dior Capture skincare.
Diddy was on hand to celebrate producer Rico Love’s birthday this weekend. He wasn’t the only one either. Kelly Rowland, BDR, Fat Joe and Pharrell were also seen on the scene. Here’s some info about the party: Roberto Cavalli and Saks Fifth Avenue, Bal Harbour pulled out all the stops Saturday night at SLS Hotel South Beach in honor of Rico Love’s 30th birthday celebration during Art Basel Miami Beach. The evening’s cocktail menu included a choice of GREY GOOSE® Cherry Noir Trey Noir, GREY GOOSE® Cherry Noir Triple Platinum and GREY GOOSE® Le Fizz. Attendees included Eva Cavalli, Kelly Rowland, Fat Joe, Pharrell, Russell Simmons, Andre Harrell, Janice Combs, Angie Beyince, DJ Cassidy and Adriana de Moura, among others. Rico stepped on to the red carpet as photographers yelled “Happy Birthday Rico,” and Eva Cavalli soon joined him for a couple’s photo session by the paparazzi. Two hours in to the event, guests were asked to take their seats at the side of the pool to witness an exclusive Cavalli fashion show, orchestrated backstage by Eva Cavalli herself. The Roberto Cavalli Spring/Summer 2013 collection featured was inspired by the poetic decorations of the Art Nouveau period. Cavalli did not show the collection at New York Fashion Week this year, making this special presentation for Rico’s birthday the only showing in the U.S. This year, Rico and Saks Fifth Avenue, Bal Harbour announced they are giving back to the community by donating 10% of the proceeds of sales from the Cavalli fashion show and pop-up store, as well as in-store sales, to Usher’s New Look Foundation. DJ Affect was hired to provide the beats throughout the cocktail reception and fashion show. As the fashion show came to a close, invited dinner guests quickly made their way inside Katsuya, the hotel’s Asian-inspired restaurant, for the private dinner portion of the evening. Approximately 100 invited guests were seated for the private dinner, with Rico’s table of 10 facing the entire room around him. As the Edamame was served family-style on to each table, guests were treated to a first course of Crispy Rice with Spicy Tuna, Creamy Rock Shrimp Tempura and the chef’s selection of assorted classic rolls, including Baked Crab Cut Rolls and Vegetable Roll. The second course comprised of Chicken Teriyaki, Robata Grilled Kobe Skirt Steak, Miso-Marinated Black Cod, Stir Fry Vegetables and Steamed White Rice. As the first course began, Rico’s five-layer birthday cake was wheeled in to the side of the room, encased with notes and bars of music etched in to each tier with Rico’s name on the very top in red, and a HUBLOT logo written in white icing on the middle layer. The base of the cake illustrates the keys on a piano, with ‘Happy 30th Birthday’ written beneath it. A Hublot watchcase with watch inside was designed in cake to resemble a replica of his own. As the second course was presented, Sean “P Diddy” Combs, made a grand entrance with an entourage of Rico’s friends. “I knew Rico while he was growing up in Harlem,” Combs said. “ I was blown away by his music then, and I still continue to listen to it now. Please raise your glasses to our friend, Rico Love.” Owner of Hublot Americas, Rick Delacroix, then made a birthday gift speech to Rico, and presented him with a limited edition Hublot Miami watch, named the “Hublot 305,” of which only 10 were made. Rico took the watch from its box and wrapped it around his other wrist and showed it next to his existing Hublot timepiece. “I am lucky, honored and privileged to have such a warm and heartfelt group of family and friends around me on such a special day,” said Love. “I’d like to thank Eva and Roberto Cavalli, and our sponsors, Saks Fifth Avenue, Bal Harbour, Hublot and GREY GOOSE, for making this momentous birthday occasion the most memorable ever.” The impressive dessert line-up included Chocolate Lover’s Cake, Passion Fruit Caramel Donuts and Mochi Ice Cream.
