Katy Perry Says ‘Part Of Me’ Isn’t About Russell Brand

Perry tells MTV News that she wrote the song two years ago, despite rumors that it was in response to her split from Brand. By James Montgomery, with reporting by Christina Garibaldi Katy Perry Photo: MTV News Ever since its premiere at the 54th Grammy Awards , folks have speculated long and hard about Katy Perry’s “Part Of Me,” and whether its various lyrical barbs — “You can keep the diamond ring, it don’t mean nothing anyway/ In fact, you can keep everything — except for me,” in particular — were aimed at her ex-husband, Russell Brand. It would seem to make sense … after all, Perry’s no stranger to the occasional(ly brutal) kiss-off (check the Teenage Dream track “Circle The Drain” for proof), but there’s just one tiny problem: “Part Of Me” first surfaced in 2010 , two months after Perry and Brand got married in India. And while Katy has yet to speak publically about the pair’s split , she was definitely looking to set the record straight about her latest chart-topping hit … which most certainly isn’t about Brand, no matter what you might think. “I wrote it two years ago, which is funny because everybody is like ‘God, it sounds so current,’ ” she told MTV News recently in Los Angeles. “And some people that I work with were like ‘You should just say you wrote it a couple of weeks ago.’ I’m like ‘I’m not a d—, I’m going to tell the truth.’ I wrote it two years ago when I was writing and recording Teenage Dream, [but] it didn’t feel right on the record. I would’ve had to take out one of my other songs that [made the album] a nice, complete package.” And despite her denials, Perry realizes that some folks will just keep on assuming “Part Of Me” is a direct swipe at Brand … and she really can’t blame them: After all, even she’ll admit that there’s a whole lot about the song that seems practically preordained. “I always planned to put it out in the spring of this year, to possibly perform it at a big [awards show], but sometimes I’m like ‘Am I living in ‘The Truman Show?’ … what’s going on?’ ” she laughed. “Because I sit down and I write all these songs at once, all these emotions and feelings and thoughts, and then, like, it just feels like sometimes I’m caught in this movie where my life is paralleling my music! It seems very serendipitous, but, as un-fun as it sounds, I prepare everything. I’m overly prepared and kind of a control freak in the best of ways. Ke$ha turns 25 years old today and is celebrating the occasion with the debut of an especially strange hairstyle. Even for her. A few weeks after shaving half her head , the eccentric artist took to Twitter and showed off a handful of gold studs glued to her scalp. “It’s happening,” Ke$ha wrote along with the photo “I look like a homeless clown right now.” Ke$ha will release a new album this year, likely some time in the spring. Dare we bother to ask: What do you think of the look?

Dancing With the Stars Spring 2012 Cast: Revealed!

Jack Wagner, Sherri Shepherd, Maria Menounos, Gavin DeGraw and Melissa Gilbert are among those competing on Dancing With the Stars this spring. A pair of sports stars – Green Bay Packers wideout Donald Driver and tennis legend Martina Navratilova – will also be lacing up their dancing shoes. Perhaps more importantly, Maksim Chmerkovskiy says he’ll be back! DeGraw is up for some serious double duty, as he will also continue his current U.S. tour for the first few weeks of the season, if he can last that long. Gavin’s pro partner, Karina Smirnoff, will most likely join him on tour so they can practice, but none of his concerts conflict with DWTS air dates. Wagner, Heather Locklear’s ex, will compete amid a minor scandal, while Menounos and Shepherd represent the entertainment show contingent. Here’s the full Dancing With the Stars cast for this spring: Jack Wagner, Melrose Place/Bold and the Beautiful star (Partner: TBA) Melissa Gilbert, Little House on the Prairie actress (Partner: Maksim Chmerkovisky) Donald Driver, NFL star (Partner: TBA) William Levy, telenova actor (Partner: TBA) Gladys Knight, music legend (Partner: TBA) Jaleel White, Family Matters child star (Partner: Kym Johnson) Martina Navratilova, tennis legend (Partner: TBA) Roshon Fegan, Disney Channel star (Professional partner: TBA) Maria Menounos, Extra co-host (Partner: Derek Hough) Sherri Shepherd, View co-host (Partner: TBA) Katherine Jenkins, opera singer (Partner: TBA) Gavin Degraw, rock singer (Partner: Karina Smirnoff)

The-Dream To Drop ‘Kill The Lights’ Single Today

Love IV track features Dream’s new artist Casha. By Rob Markman, with reporting by Sway Calloway The-Dream on “RapFix Live” Photo: Natasha Chandel/ MTV News The-Dream is ready to take his show on the road. In preparation for his Love IV album, the singer/songwriter is getting ready to embark on a new tour, and on Thursday (February 23), he’s planning to drop a new song to commemorate the run. The Kill the Lights Tour will begin March 11 in New York, and The-Dream is dropping his new single of the same name. “The name of the song is actually ‘Kill the Lights,’ featuring my artist Casha,” he said on Wednesday’s “RapFix Live.” The song will be featured on the upcoming Love IV, which the ATL crooner estimates will be out in the spring or summer — he doesn’t want to put an exact date on it. The-Dream already dropped the LP’s first single, “ROC,” earlier this year, and in addition to his new LP, he wants to concentrate on grooming Casha, who made her first appearance on The-Dream’s free digital album 1977 singing a remake of Minnie Riperton’s “Love, Stop Making a Fool of Me.” “I’m just channeling and building her the right way and giving her the right time,” he said of his new artist. “I’m not trying to get, ‘She better come out and sell this’; I’m not doing that. She’s too talented for that.” Instead of creating microwave hits with Casha, The-Dream would rather take his time. “She’s going to sell on her own, she’s great, she’ll be fine,” he said. “I’m trying to slow-bake it.” What are you expecting from The-Dream’s new music? Josh Hutcherson Prepares for a Pounding in High School Slasher Detention

Joseph Kahn’s Detention had me from its first knowingly self-aware trailer, and while word out of SXSW was polarizing — a love it or hate it kind of deal, by many accounts — it’s one of my more anticipated films of the spring. True, the competition this season isn’t too stiff, but still! Watch Josh Hutcherson (of next months The Hunger Games , perhaps you’ve heard of it?) as a cute hipster kid get ready to take a beating from the school tough guy while an actual killer runs rampant through town and tell me this isn’t worth putting on the calendar for April. Here’s the film’s full trailer, to give you a sense of what we’re in for. Admittedly, the nonstop pop culture references schtick has been almost fully exhausted by now but good, clever high school comedies never get old. Call it Not Another Not Another Teen Movie , if you will/must. Adding to the intrigue: Detention was shot half a year before Hutcherson was cast as Peeta in The Hunger Games , so the timing of release here is obvious. Will Hunger Games fans flock to the R-rated horror comedy to see a new side of Hutcherson in what may be the edgiest/darkest/ballsiest project since he graduated from family flicks? Detention will be released in select theaters on April 13. [via Badass Digest ]

Lil Wayne: Engaged, Expecting Baby With Dhea?

Did Lil Wayne pop the question to girlfriend Dhea on Valentine’s Day? That’s the rumor, which spread like wildfire after MediaTakeOut (yes, we know), reported that Dhea told Weezy she’s pregnant … and that he decided to make it official. MTO says he cares about her so much that he wanted to put a ring on it. They also report that the wedding will take place this spring. All sounds very lovely and bogus. However, Lil Wayne took to Twitter early this morning to write “She said yes!” He did not say who said yes to what, but that’s something! Congratulations, possibly! If Wayne and Dhea are expecting, it will be their first … but not his. Lil Wayne has four kids. His first, daughter Reginae, was born when he was 15, to his high school sweetheart (and now ex-wife) Antonia “Toya” Carter (n

For Discussion: Ladies, Could You Date A Man That Admitted To Beating One Of His Exes?

Does catching fade with an ex automatically rule out a man who you think is a potential mate? Everyone has a past. Sometimes the things in that past are dark and ugly (like welts and bruises). However, there are times when people deserve a second chance to prove that they are not the person that they used to be. So we ask you ladies, would an admitted history of domestic violence make you dump your current boyfriend or stop dating a guy whom you were previously interested??? On The “Come” Up: Nouveau Riche Facebook Graffiti Artist Says He Was Offered “Oral Pleasures” Everyday For The Rest Of His Life For $2 Million!!

We would say “get this thirsty ho some water” but it appears she’d rather drink something else… Remember this guy ? No? Well, everyone he ever met in his life does! The graffiti artist, who will net $200 million in the Facebook IPO, says he was offered oral sex every day for the rest of his life, in exchange for a $2 million slice of his new wealth. David Choe gambled on stock, turning down cash, when he painted the Facebook headquarters in Palo Alto back in 2005, a decision that will make him an overnight millionaire when the company makes their initial public offering later this spring. The 35-year-old took a considerable risk when he turned down $60,000 cash for a social networking website that he regarded as a pale imitation of MySpace. But while most of us would be ecstatic to find ourselves a millionaire 200 times over, the art school drop out says he hates his new found fame and fortune, as it means that ‘more people will bother him’, Good Morning America reported. Choe said he was at home in bed when he first realised he’d been outed alongside around 1,000 Facebook employees who will become millionaires after the blockbuster $5 billion flotation. He said: ‘ I got a text from a woman I hadn’t spoken to in five years and she offered me “oral fun times” (ed.) every day for the rest of my life for $2 million.’ ‘Just out of the blue. It was out of nowhere and I was like ‘What the hell is happening?’’ We’ll tell you what the hell is happening sir, you’re WINNING!!! Source More On Bossip! Grammys Favorite Adele Faces Tough Challengers For Record Of The Year

Katy Perry, Bon Iver, Bruno Mars and Mumford & Sons are also competing for the prestigious award. By Gil Kaufman Adele, Bruno Mars and Katy Perry Photo: Getty Images Every year has one: a runaway Grammy nominee who sweeps through the top categories and appears to be the juggernaut to beat. This year is no different. While Kanye West is the top nominee with seven nods, Adele is close behind with six nods, including bids in all of the top categories. And while we won’t know whose name will be called until Sunday night’s show, a look at the Record of the Year race is a fine example of why the British songbird might need some help packing her hardware up for the trip back home. Unless you spent time on another planet this year, and even if you did, chances are you heard Adele’s breakthrough hit, “Rolling in the Deep” a dozen or (many) more times. The stirring soul pop gem was the perfect showcase for the singer’s powerful, richly textured voice, and its ebb-and-flow dynamic packed a relationship’s worth of drama into 3:48. In addition to selling nearly 6 million copies of her album, 21, she also moved nearly 6 million copies of the “Deep” single, earning credit for helping to (slightly) pull the long-moribund U.S. record business out of a decade-long slump. But she has some formidable opponents in the Record of the Year race, one of the most prestigious awards handed out, which frequently honors the year’s most successful or notable songs. That might explain how Best New Artist nominee Bon Iver got into the mix with the ethereal “Holocene.” Leader Justin Vernon broke through to the mainstream in 2011 thanks to his own folk-and-AutoTuned compositions, as well as work with West. If “Rolling in the Deep” was inescapable, then Mumford & Sons ‘ “The Cave” was just a few notches below ubiquitous, but still all over the place. The banjo-picking, foot-stomping ditty from the English folk revivalists helped cement their status as a force to be reckoned with, while serving as a nice follow-up to their salty breakthrough, “Little Lion Man.” It also helped keep their multi-platinum debut, Sigh No More, a fixture on the Billboard 200 and iTunes charts throughout the year. Somewhere in between were two huge hits for Katy Perry and Bruno Mars that put a stranglehold on pop radio for much of the spring and summer. Perry’s inspiring “Firework” helped the singer reach elite company on the Billboard charts on her way to landing six top-five hits from a single album , not to mention empowering her young fans to embrace their unique identities. Any way you slice it, it was also a huge year for Mars, who also garnered six Grammy noms for his Doo-Wops & Hooligans debut as well as his producing/songwriting work on songs by other artists. But it was the sweat and toil he put into the endless love tune “Grenade” that made all that hard work pay off. “[We] worked extremely hard on ‘Grenade.’ That was the hardest song on the whole album to finish because we knew we had something, and to get all that emotion out,” Mars told MTV News in December. “I think I can speak for all of us when I say that we’re really happy that that song is being recognized because that’s like our trophy song.” Chaos! Profanity! Wardrobe malfunctions! Don’t miss Sway and James Montgomery live from the Grammys red carpet this Sunday, February 12, for a full three hours of mayhem, starting at 5 p.m. ET on MTV.com.
