Bret Michaels Returns to the Stage, Teases American Idol Judging Gig

Just five weeks after suffering a brain hemorrhage, Bret Michaels returned to the stage last night in Biloxi, Mississippi. Incredibly, this event itself was NOT the most surprising development of the evening! But, first, a quick recap of the concert: Limping slighty, Bret told the 1,400-person crowd at the Hard Rock Casino:

Janet Jackson Sings ‘Nothing,’ Gets ‘Nasty’ On ‘American Idol’

Singer wows ‘Idol’ viewers with back-to-back performances of new song ‘Nothing,’ followed by classic ‘Nasty.’ By Josh Wigler Janet Jackson Photo: MTV News As the season nine finale of “American Idol” drew close to the finish line, the crowd gathered at the Nokia Theatre and the viewers at home waited nervously for either single mom Crystal Bowersox or paint salesman Lee DeWyze to be crowned the winner. But even as their fates hung in the air, the rest of the season nine competitors flocked to the stage one last time to sing “Again,” the 1993 single from Janet Jackson’s fifth studio album, Janet. The former “Idol” hopefuls’ collective moment in the spotlight ended shortly as Jackson herself graced the stage for a moving rendition of her new song “Nothing,” recorded for the soundtrack of Tyler Perry’s “Why Did I Get Married Too.” With her hair pulled back tight and her black dress flowing, Jackson proceeded to provide the audience with waves of heartfelt emotion as she sang: And the truth is that I realize/ Love is fading from your eyes/ Don’t know how it came to this/ But we can get it fixed tonight. Jackson’s sweet song didn’t stay sweet for long. As she finished her version of “Nothing,” the 44-year-old singer momentarily left the stage and was replaced by a host of male dancers wearing white shirts and black slacks. When she returned, Jackson’s dress was gone and replaced by a skintight black bodysuit, signaling the transition from the mournful beauty of “Nothing” to the fast-paced nitty-gritty of “Nasty,” Jackson’s second single from her third studio album, Control (1986). A light show of green lasers flocked the Nokia Theatre as Jackson moved aggressively against her fellow dancers, all of whom finished the performance sans shirts. Although significantly more clothed than her stagemates, Jackson was clearly just as thrilled as the dancers as she warmly waved and blew kisses to both the audience and the judges’ table at the end of her performance. Bret Michaels Performs On ‘American Idol’

Recovering rock star takes the stage with Casey James. By Josh Wigler Bret Michaels on the ‘American Idol’ Finale May 26 Photo: FOX After suffering a subarachnoid brain hemorrhage in April, discovering a hole in his heart earlier this month and beating out Holly Robinson Peete on “The Celebrity Apprentice” on Sunday, one would think Bret Michaels had gone through enough over the past several weeks. Not so, apparently, as the Poison frontman surprised the masses yet again by appearing on Wednesday night’s (May 26) “American Idol” season-nine finale for an inspiring and rocking musical performance. The performance began as third-place finisher Casey James took the stage, slowly strumming his rendition of “Every Rose Has Its Thorn.” Audience anticipation quickly built to a fever pitch as it dawned on the Nokia Theatre crowd and the folks at home that Michaels was about to grace the stage. Sure enough, a healthy-looking Michaels appeared with guitar in hand, gradually making his way to stand side-by-side with the clearly enthused James. In light of Michaels’ recent health scares, the lyrics to “Every Rose” suddenly took on new meaning: “Though its been awhile now/ I can still feel so much pain/ Like a knife that cuts you, the wound heals/ But the scar, that scar remains.” But Michaels wasn’t dwelling on any scars of his own. Strumming along and singing as loudly and proudly as ever before, the rocking Poison musician more than held his own on the “American Idol” stage. In a night already filled with many unforgettable performances, Michaels’ appearance was undoubtedly one of the evening’s most powerful and uplifting moments. Ian Benardo Crashes ‘American Idol’ Finale Stage

‘This is a Kanye moment,’ former ‘Idol’ hopeful declares during Simon Cowell farewell segment. By Josh Wigler Photo: Fox No matter who walks away with the coveted “American Idol” crown, somebody will exit disappointed. But neither Crystal Bowersox nor Lee DeWyze will leave the Nokia Theatre as the most surprised person in the auditorium. That’s a distinction that undoubtedly falls on Simon Cowell after onetime “Idol” hopeful Ian Benardo stormed the stage and, in his own words, pulled a Kanye West by ripping into the outgoing judge. At the end of an original musical number titled “Simon Said,” performed by comedian Dane Cook, a plethora of contestants formerly burned by the brutally honest Cowell flocked to the stage to join Cook’s derisive song. But the microphone was quickly hogged by Benardo, who was famously rejected by Cowell during a New York City “American Idol” audition in 2007. “Who cares? It’s all about Ian Benardo tonight!” the stage-crashing Benardo announced to a packed crowd. “I’m going to replace you, Simon Cowell! No one has a thing to say about you — just me. This is a Kanye moment, and I’m … ” Benardo’s rant was swiftly interrupted by another of Cowell’s many victims, Tatiana Del Toro, but the self-proclaimed Kanye imitator resumed his place in the spotlight with little trouble. “Nobody cares about you,” he told Del Toro. “It’s all about Ian Benardo, and I want to say I’m replacing you, Simon Cowell, because I’m more entertaining!” According to MTV News’ “Idol” expert, Jim Cantiello, who is backstage at the finale, the “Simon Said” performance was supposed to feature all the formerly burned contestants getting their retribution against Cowell. Unfortunately for them, Benardo’s tirade forced “Idol” producers to end the segment early. But with an hour remaining in the finale, it’s a sure bet that others close to the show will get their last licks in on Cowell before the night is through. What did you think of Ian’s stage crash? American idol season 9 top 2

Casey James was eliminated from “American Idol” tonight after the votes from Tuesday#39;s Top 3 performances were revealed during an emotion-packed results show. Casey’s ouster sets the stage for a Final 2 showdown between longtime Season 9 front-runners Lee DeWyze and Crystal Bowersox. Crystal Bowersox and Lee DeWyze will battle each other for the “American Idol” title next week after guitarist Casey James was voted off by viewers on Wednesday. ‘American Idol’ Report Card: Crystal, Casey, Lee Cram For Finals

Bowersox’s ‘Maybe I’m Amazed’ scores the week’s high marks. By Eric Ditzian Lee DeWyze, Crystal Bowersox, Casey James Photo: FOX It’s the week before final exams on “American Idol,” so it’s probably too late to start wondering, “What if?” As in, “What if we had a different top three? What if Lilly Scott or Katelyn Epperly hadn’t been chucked off the show far too early and were still bringing their expectation-defying artistry to the stage?” It’s certainly too late to imagine our expectations might be proven wrong when it comes to the performances of Crystal Bowersox , Lee DeWyze and Casey James . By this point in the “Idol” school year, we know exactly what we’re going to get from each contestant and, at least in this regard, Tuesday night’s show did not disappoint. There were, of course, myriad disappointments: Bowersox’s first song choice, which came off like a parody of a Bowersox performance; the way the judges bickered amongst themselves after James’ second performance rather than concentrate on the evaluation at hand; how DeWyze’s purportedly show-stealing performance of “Hallelujah” paled in comparison to Jason Castro’s take on the song years earlier, and maybe even to Tim Urban’s earlier in the season. There also many highs: MamaSox’s smack-it-outta-the-park rendition of the softball song choice Ellen DeGeneres handed her. Time to get specific and dole out some grades with another edition our “American Idol” report card. (And don’t miss Jim Cantiello’s “Idol” recap in the MTV Newsroom.) Excellent Crystal Bowersox, “Maybe I’m Amazed” : Courtesy of Ellen DeGeneres, MamaSox got the gift of the finest judges’ song choice with this Paul McCartney hit. She didn’t squander the opportunity. Crystal’s voice was delicate in places, powerful in others, and at all times showed off range and emotion that her competitors simply can’t match. We’d take points away for the staging, during which she descended a staircase and generally looked uncomfortable, but we’re guessing all that movement wasn’t her idea. Note for next time, Crystal: If you’re gonna ditch the guitar, stay in one place on the stage and do what you do best: Frickin’ wail! Good Lee DeWyze, “Simple Man” : Would it be crazy to say we enjoyed this take on the Lynyrd Skynyrd tune better than his second performance? Less ornate, more honest, fewer bells and whistles, more Lee. We dug the slowly building intro and how he cut the song’s Southern-rock flare with some indie-rock verve. He suffered through some pitch problems in the second half of the tune, but his performance was far and away the finest of the first three songs. Lee DeWyze, “Hallelujah” : This seems to be the most buzzed-about performance of the evening. Simon Cowell could barely contain his self-satisfaction as he congratulated himself for choosing a tune that allowed Lee to have a “moment.” Only problem was that it wasn’t really Lee’s moment. He was surrounded by half the backup singers in Hollywood and a brassy trumpet, the combined effect of which was to overwhelm the “Idol” hopeful. That’s not to say it wasn’t a good performance, especially by season-nine standards. And Lee showed off genuine emotion, something verging on vulnerability. For the first time, he looked like he actually wants to win. But despite the judges’ effusive praise, Lee’s song was not nearly as powerful as Crystal’s “Maybe I’m Amazed.” Satisfactory Crystal Bowersox, “Come to My Window” : You want to know why MamaSox landed in the Satisfactory range on this one? Not because she didn’t sound lovely, or because we didn’t dig the reappearance of her harmonica, or because we fault her for staying true to herself as an artist. It’s for a simple lack of creativity on her part. A Melissa Etheridge song sung pretty much exactly how Melissa Etheridge sings it shows us nothing new about Bowersox. No doubt that cover killed back in her hometown, but up on the “Idol” stage, it was simply tiresome. Not something we’d expect at this point in the competition. There’s a way to respect your own artistry while at the same time surprising your audience. This wasn’t the way. Luckily, she returned for a stellar second performance. Casey James, “Daughters” : James deserves an apology from Randy Jackson and Kara DioGuardi for a lazy song choice that almost seemed designed to deny the singer a “moment” in the same way that Bowersox and DeWyze got a chance at theirs. John Mayer’s song is a simple one that requires a voice that can communicate raw emotion; Casey’s just lacks that sort of intensity, phrasing and modularity. What we got instead was a contestant far too laid back at this point. That’s the Casey we’ve known all along. The only difference seems to be that, for the second week in a row, the judges seem to have tired of his presence on “Idol” and are ripping him to shreds in the hope that voters follow their lead. He deserves better, even if he doesn’t really deserve to call himself an “Idol” top three finalist. Unsatisfactory Casey James, “OK, It’s Alright With Me” : If Jackson and DioGuardi were bent on sabotage in their song choice, James straight up nuked himself with his pick. Let’s just forget about the song choice, because there’s no way to wrap our heads around that one. He was severely uncomfortable on the stage. There was nothing unique about the performance. It was the epitome of small time. Forget about star power. This performance never got off the ground. It’s hard to see any other outcome on Wednesday’s elimination show: James’ “American Idol” run will be coming to an end. How would you grade the top three on last night’s “American Idol”?
