Michael Jackson Reality Show Might Help Find Cirque Du Soleil Choreographer

‘There is a huge appetite for people that want to participate in this Michael Jackson tribute,’ Cirque CEO Daniel Lamarre says. By Larry Carroll Michael Jackson Photo: Al Messerschmidt Archive / Getty Images BEVERLY HILLS, California — By now, you may have heard that Cirque du Soleil has unveiled an ambitious plan to bring Michael Jackson back for a series of high-profile stage shows in Las Vegas and beyond. But what you might not know is that these plans will also take the King of Pop off the stage and into everything from nightclubs to restaurants to … a reality show? “There’s not a lack of creativity around the table,” grinned Cirque President and CEO Daniel Lamarre when we sat down with him on Tuesday (April 20). “Between [Michael Jackson Estate Co-Executors] John McClain and John Branca and all the creative team at Cirque Du Soleil, we’re already bouncing a lot of new ideas around. “This joint venture is not only for those two shows, but for all of the other initiatives that we can develop together,” he added. “We are already working on the concept of nightclubs, restaurants and other experiences and other types of content that we can develop on the brand of Michael Jackson.” One of the leading concepts is a reality TV show that Lamarre hopes to launch by the end of this year. He describes it as a chance to combine television’s two hottest shows, “American Idol” and “Dancing With the Stars,” with the distinctive style of the King of Pop. “John McClain came to us with the idea,” he said of the as-yet-untitled program, which would have a national audience assisting as they built the Cirque stage shows. “We would pick the best choreographer that there is in the world to work on [our stage] show, but also use them in a reality show in order to find a new, cutting-edge choreographer that could join the team.” The reality show would also audition dancers for the MJ shows, with a certain number of the top contestants landing a Cirque gig. “That could be an exciting moment,” Lamarre said of the show. “Right now there is a huge appetite for people that want to participate in this Michael Jackson tribute.” The Michael Jackson estate and Cirque du Soleil are spearheading the Michael Jackson projects with MGM Mirage, the gaming company that own such Vegas hotels as Excalibur, Luxor, MGM Grand, Monte Carlo and more. Lamarre said that one of the MGM Mirage hotels will host the Las Vegas Michael Jackson/Cirque show, and the venture’s press release mentions that “special lifestyle projects including a nightclub” will be developed. “We are exploring all of those opportunities right now,” Lamarre offered. “We’re at the early stages of those ideas. But we want to make sure that all the fans around the world that want to celebrate Michael Jackson have an opportunity to do it through the experiences we will bring to them.” But if those Michael Jackson-themed restaurants become a reality, Lamarre did make us one key promise: They won’t include moonwalking waiters attempting to balance food trays. “I don’t think anybody can do it the way Michael Jackson was doing it,” he laughed. ‘American Idol’ In 60 Seconds: Katie And Andrew Ignore Adam Lambert’s Wisdom

Meanwhile, Ryan Seacrest’s erratic behavior was the only thing keeping us watching. By Jim Cantiello Katie Stevens and Ryan Seacrest on Wednesday night’s “American Idol” Photo: Frank Micelotta/ Getty Images “American Idol” in 60 Seconds has fast become an MTV News institution, but it goes by so fast that it’s not always easy to catch every golden nugget. So, here we present to you Jim Cantiello’s bite-size recap of this week’s “Idol” high jinks. This week, “American Idol” producers targeted the tween demo by forcing the top nine to sing the songs of Elvis Presley! And where better to rehearse than on the stage of the Cirque du Elvis Las Vegas stage show?! Adam Lambert broke all sorts of barriers by being the first openly-“Idol” contestant to return to the show as a guest mentor. Although Adam’s advice was spot-on and intuitive (Yo, Andrew, stop being a bore! Yo, Aaron Kelly, stop being a 5-year-old! Yo, Lee Dewyze, Jocelyn Wildenstein moves her face more than you!) most of the contestants blatantly ignored his wisdom. The result? An episode as entertaining as “3000 Miles to Graceland.” Yep, it was that bad. The only thing that kept viewers from switching over to “Lost” was Ryan Seacrest’s increasingly erratic behavior. He slow-danced during Tim Urban’s (kind of awesome) performance; he slurred his speech; he made inappropriate comments to contestants; he forgot he was on live television — it was like Paula Abdul never left “Idol.” So congratulations, Mariah Carey! Your loopy “TRL” appearance from 2001 is no longer the craziest thing we’ve seen on live television. On Wednesday night’s results show (which featured a double elimination), we learned that “Idol Gives Back” will have the same lineup as the one from two years ago. (Basically.) We also learned that Kara DioGuardi is somehow even more unappealing when she’s holding an adorable African baby. How is that even possible? Two “Idol” alums returned to sing a song, and each brought something special to the stage. Adam Lambert brought lasers and a glittery ear monitor, while Brooke White brought along deadweight in the form of Miley Cyrus’ tone deaf ex-boyfriend, Justin Gaston. Once results time arrived, Andrew was the first to get the boot, and he straight up didn’t sing “Straight Up” as his farewell song. By the end of the hour, Katie Stevens was the other singer sent packing, putting the “cut” in “Connecticut.” Next week is “Idol Gives Back,” which means we’ll hear inspirational ballads from the top seven. You’ve been warned. Do you think Katie and Andrew were eliminated too soon? What was the highlight of this week’s “Idol”? Share your opinions in the comments! Malcolm McLaren Remembered By John Lydon, Vivienne Westwood, More

‘I don’t think I would have been the singer that I am today if it hadn’t been for him,’ said Bow Wow Wow lead singer Annabella Lwin. By Gil Kaufman Malcolm McLaren (circa 1984) Photo: Lisa Haun/Michael Ochs Archives/Getty Images Musical bomb-thrower, cultural rabble-rouser, fashion icon, ultimate hype man. A day after the death of former Sex Pistols manager Malcolm McLaren from cancer at the age of 64, tributes poured in for the irrepressible self-promoter who many consider the godfather of punk rock. McLaren died on Thursday in a Swiss hospital after a long battle with a rare form of cancer called mesothelioma, and even though they had a fraught professional relationship, former Sex Pistols frontman John Lydon (a.k.a. “Johnny Rotten”) had uncharacteristically kind words for his former boss. “For me Malc was always entertaining, and I hope you remember that,” Lydon said in a statement attributed to his stage name. “Above all else he was an entertainer and I will miss him, and so should you.” Also paying tribute was David Johansen, frontman of the New York Dolls, the gender-bending stateside punk progenitors that McLaren briefly managed before turning his attention to creating England’s Pistols. “Malcolm McLaren was such a marvelous amalgam of exuberation, sensuality, culture, and literacy salted with the essential recognition of his own rascality,” he told Entertainment Weekly . “He was the perfect preservation against stuffiness and a lack of humanity. We are going to miss him.” Annabella Lwin, who was discovered by McLaren at age 14 while working at a dry cleaner, said the flame-haired impresario changed her life by plucking her from obscurity, changing her name (from Myant Myant Aye) and hiring her as the frontwoman of the new-wave act Bow Wow Wow in 1980. On the day he rescued her from minimum-wage drudgery, Lwin said she thought McLaren was “a strange creature from another planet. He had a chat with my mother, and asked her — well, he didn’t ask. He said, ‘We need her for this band.’ And the rest of it was pretty much an everyday thing. “We got to work together on songs, and I was told to sing certain things, and he was the one that really gave me encouragement in that situation, as opposed to the band. He was the one that said, ‘Use your imagination,’ which is something that will never leave me,” she told EW . “Malcolm McLaren recognized something within me I didn’t even know I was capable of. I don’t think I would have been the singer that I am today if it hadn’t been for him, even long after I had an association with him on a professional level. I’m so grateful to have known somebody like him. … “Down the road, I discovered the other stuff he’d done, and I realized that he was like a big schoolboy, and he was having a bit of fun with these building blocks. And if it didn’t go his way, he’d knock ’em all down and start all over again with some other situation. It’s great to know that he did so much in his life. I mean, what an accomplishment! He started the punk rock movement, and there are a lot of groups out there that have him to thank for them being so big today in the industry. “A lot of people will definitely be feeling the loss of this genius. Because he was a genius. He saw such great potential in people. He just went all these different directions. You can’t really say any less than that: The guy was a genius.” McLaren’s former partner fashion designer Dame Vivienne Westwood described him as a “very charismatic, special and talented person.” The couple’s son, Joseph Corre, the founder of the Agent Provocateur line of lingerie, called his dad the “original punk rocker,” who “revolutionized the world,” according to BBC News . “He’s somebody I’m incredibly proud of. He’s a real beacon of a man for people to look up to,” Corre said.

Poreotix Say Winning ‘America’s Best Dance Crew’ Is ‘A Dream Come True’

The dance group credit their victory to ‘being true’ to themselves. By Jocelyn Vena, with reporting by Tim Kash Poreotix and Tim Kash Photo: MTV News On Thursday night, “America’s Best Dance Crew” found its latest champs: Poreotix . And the California natives admit that they still can’t believe they managed to rise up the ranks and beat out the Blueprint Cru as season five’s winning team. When MTV News caught up with the crew, they said they were still reeling from the news. Describing the win as “a dream come true,” they explained they were not only excited by the win but also the fact that the show gave them the chance to “inspire the fans.” So, what made the Poreotix stand out? In their opinion, it was their ability to be themselves week after week that connected most to fans. “I think we did a lot of stuff the other crews wouldn’t have done,” Dumbo Nguyen explained. “We don’t move around the stage a lot, but we definitely entertain a lot of people.” Dumbo summed up their dance mantra this way: “We want to show people that we’re able to stand here and entertain you and don’t have to run around the stage and do crazy stuff. As long as you bring your true self out and people enjoy that, that’s all that matters.” The crew said their biggest challenge was during disco week. And the guys will be back for charity week, when they plan to bring their game again by “being true to ourselves again. Popping choreography robotics,” Dumbo said. And what will the guys spend their winnings on? Whatever’s left over after school tuition and rent, they’ll put into savings. It seems these guys aren’t just dance machines, they’re also practical. Are you happy with Poreotix’s win? Talk about your favorite “ABDC” moments in the comments below! ‘American Idol’ Judges Save Michael Lynche

He was joined by Andrew Garcia and Aaron Kelly in this week’s bottom three. By James Montgomery Michael Lynche on “American Idol” Wednesday Photo: Fox On Tuesday night’s “American Idol,” we had extended didgeridoo bellowing, a winsome bagpiper slowly descending a staircase and a dude bounding onstage to embrace Siobhan Magnus. How would Wednesday’s (April 7) results show top all that WTF-ness? With a controversial judges’ save, of course! Viewers decreed that it was big-hearted (and equally big-bodied) crooner Michael Lynche’s turn to go — a bit of a shock after the “Idol” judges praised his reworking of the Beatles’ “Eleanor Ribgy” — and as the studio audience howled their disapproval, Lynche strode to the center of the stage and belted out a version of Kate Bush’s “This Woman’s Work,” the same song that brought judge Kara DioGuardi to tears a few weeks earlier. As Lynche finished, the audience cheered wildly, his wife wept, and the judges conferred. Simon Cowell played the drama to the hilt, speaking in slow, pregnant pauses as the room fell deathly quiet. “The frustrating thing is, Michael, is that we all wish you did something like that yesterday, and this is why you’re in the position you’re in right now,” Cowell said. “We only have one save in the competition. This is unanimous, Michael, if it’s any comfort, and we have decided we’re going to see you next week.” With that, the audience squealed with delight (Lynche’s wife nearly leapt out of her dress), and the man dubbed “Big Mike” was mobbed by his fellow “Idol” contestants. Even the judges seemed to be excited, giving him a standing ovation as Lynche pounded his chest and blew kisses to his wife. Lynche’s save, of course, means that two “Idol” hopefuls will be getting the boot next week, and we suspect things will be a lot less jovial then. Wednesday’s bottom three was made up entirely of guys — Lynche, Andrew Garcia and Aaron Kelly — a fact “Idol” producers didn’t reveal until more than 30 minutes into the show and only after performances by Jason Der
