This is so sad. Another young mother and her children have been killed. This time in Rockford, Ill: An adult and two children found dead inside a burning northwest-side home Sunday were fatally shot before the fire. The autopsies, performed today by the Winnebago County coroner’s office, confirmed Rockford police detectives’ and fire inspectors’ suspicions. “It appears the fire was started to cover up the homicides,” Deputy Chief Greg Lindmark said. Firefighters responded at 4:30 a.m. Sunday to 2708 Canterbury Lane for a residential structure fire. They extinguished the blaze and found a body inside the residence. Further investigation by the Rockford fire and police departments turned up the children’s bodies. How the beige ranch home caught fire has yet to be determined. “We’re utilizing the state crime lab, the state fire marshal, Rockford fire investigators and Rockford police detectives,” Lindmark said. While the coroner’s office is still in the process of identifying the victims through dental records, several dozen family members, co-workers and classmates stopped at the corner residence throughout the day today. They signed their names on a poster-size sympathy card hung outside the home on a chain-link fence and placed candles, stuffed animals and three makeshift crosses each bearing the name of a family member. The family and friends identified the victims as Tasha Cleary, a 12-year-son nicknamed “Mook” and a 2-year-son named Tarri. Danielle Streit and Kelly Blackwell said Cleary was their co-worker at Vision Financial, a Rockford collection agency. “She had incredible wit,” Blackwell said. “She was very funny, and she would (do anything) for those kids.” Streit added, “She was my hairdresser. She was good person. It’s just a senseless crime.” Cleary’s landlord, Lois Sallinger, said the family had rented the Canterbury Lane home since Feb. 1, 2010. Cleary planned to move at the end of the month into a home of her own. “She wanted to have her own salon in the basement to do hair,” Streit said. Neighbor Heidi Russell, 28, watched firefighters return to the scene this afternoon, venture past the yellow crime scene tape, and tote charred articles out of the house in large gray metal pails. Also a mother of two children, Russell said she hugged her 7-year-old daughter, Tessah, and 2-year-old son, Gabin, a little bit tighter than normal Sunday after learning of the deaths. “It’s really hard for me to see something like that,” she said. “Those kids didn’t even have a chance.” This sounds like it might have been personal. By Akshay Bhansali Armin Van Buuren Photo: MTV News After rocking Johannesburg in South Africa, Miami , Buenos Aires and his native Netherlands at Den Bosch, trance music superstar Armin van Buuren will round out his all-star-DJ-five-events-over-five-weeks-on-five-continents celebration of the 500th episode of his popular weekly radio show “A State of Trance” in Sydney, Australia. The commemorating series, known to 15 million show listeners in 26 countries around the world as ASOT500, warps up this Saturday at Sydney’s Acer Arena. Van Buuren, one of dance music’s most iconic DJ/producers, is certainly pleased at the scope of the globe-spanning endeavor. But what has the world’s #1 DJ , as voted by fans four years in a row in DJ Mag ‘s highly coveted annual Top 100 DJ poll, particularly proud is the sense of community he’s found with the high-caliber DJs that participated in his ASOT500 celebration. “I asked the listeners back in September of last year which DJs they wanted to see,” van Buuren told MTV News. “So I had a poll on my website and we got over 25,000 reactions, and I basically approached the DJs from the top of that list. It’s the cream of the crop, and I’m really proud because it shows you this community wants to work together, which for me is the biggest thing. This scene can only grow if we work together. That’s the idea behind ‘A State of Trance 500.’ ” Indeed, the long list of contributing DJs for ASOT 500’s festivities is star studded: Lange, Markus Schulz, Gareth Emery, ATB, Ferry Corsten, Sander van Doorn , Above and Beyond and Cosmic Gate are but a small few of the supporting acts. At Den Bosch alone, ASOT 500 boasted five rooms, each with more than seven performances over sometimes more than nine hours. It makes sense then that the video for the festivities’ theme song, a van Buuren-produced (under the name Gaia) tune titled “Status Excessu D” (Latin for “A State of Trance 500”), features five outer-space mascots planting flags in five countries, uniting the world in one giant trance music groove. So when it came time for van Buuren to release his first apparel line — the DJ/producer recently signed a multiyear clothing and footwear deal with Quick Sports International — naturally his affable space cadets presented themselves front and center. “The first batch of clothing that we will release are for A State of Trance episode 500,” van Buuren said. “[With five events on five continents] we have the five puppets, they are the mascots of the five events. Like the space cadets. And in the video [for ‘Excessu D’], you see the five puppets coming from outer space and connecting the world globally. The world has become one big dance floor.” “All DJs unite for a state of trance,” he continued, “and it’s not about the brand, A State of Trance. It’s so much more about the trance family feeling. Celebrate trance, and share it with the community out there.” For now, van Buuren’s putting out this limited-edition ASOT500 “Q by Armin van Buuren” offering of white, black and gray shirts and footwear, a collection he designed based on what the superstar DJ normally wears to “club.” But he intends to release subsequent collections of clothing, for men and women (his wife has also taken on designer duties), with “On the Beach” and “In the Club,” the names of the two discs that make up his latest release, A State of Trance 2011, in mind. “When you go on holiday, you have to go to all of these stores to get your swimming shorts, to get your sunglasses, to get your T-shirts. It takes a lot of time, so I told the guys from Quick, I’m thinking about the people that like trance. I’m thinking about my fans. It’s safe to say that that sleepy little town of Windermere has seen it’s share of controversy as of late. In 2009, the eyes of the national media turned to the affluent Orange County community near Orlando after it was reported that Tiger Woods had crashed his SUV. That was just the beginning of what would become one of the biggest celebrity sex scandals in recent history. Last year, the town’s police chief, Daniel Saylor, was arrested after agents with the Florida Department of Law Enforcement said he utilized his position to hinder an investigation into sexual battery allegations against a friend. Saylor, 44, was charged with one count of giving unlawful compensation for official behavior, a second-degree felony, and one count official misconduct, a third-degree felony. And on Tuesday night, a town council meeting was abruptly interrupted when the husband of the town manager and Mayor Gary Bruhn got into a shouting match. The meeting was quickly adjourned and police officers evacuated the building, but before the room was cleared, Mayor Bruhn ended up on the floor. Officials on Wednesday said it is not clear whether Bruhn fell or was pushed as he exchanged words with Roland Bernier. But he crashed into a table and fell to the floor, where he was briefly unconscious. Paramedics arrived and transported him to a nearby hospital. The hospital was later placed on lock-down. The altercation comes a day after the FDLE released its findings into an investigation of the town’s police department. The FDLE report revealed that money, weapons and confiscated drugs were missing from the police department’s evidence and property locker. The same day, the FDLE announced additional charges levied against Daniel Saylor. Earlier Tuesday evening, Mayor Bruhn addressed the council for about 15 minutes or more, suggesting the council fire Town Manager Cecelia Bernier. He cited several of the FDLE findings regarding mismanagement of evidence, missing evidence, and an accusation that Bernier even voided traffic citations for people she knew. “Our residents’ safety was compromised by tickets being voided, cases dropped and our reputation tarnished,” he said. The mayor offered a motion that Bernier be removed. No one would second the motion so it died, which means that for now, Bernier retains her position. The council wanted to talk about the issue some more and never voted on it. That’s when Bernier’s husband went to the podium and made some heated statements. Roland Bernier left the police department Tuesday night after being questioned. He wouldn’t answer any inquiries from the media. It is still unclear if he will be charged or arrested. The case has now been handed over to the State Attorney’s Office. When asked on Wednesday if charges should be filed, Chief McCoy replied, “That is up to the State Attorney.”
