Eminem And Rihanna’s ‘Love The Way You Lie’ Video: Love On Fire

Megan Fox and Dominic Monaghan play a couple whose passion turns violent in the dramatic clip. By Shaheem Reid Eminem Photo: Jeff Kravitz/Getty Images Eminem ‘s new video for “Love the Way You Lie” tells the story of two lovers (played by Megan Fox and Dominic Monaghan ) whose passion turns violent as their relationship vacillates between ecstasy and agony. The cinematic video, which debuted Thursday night (August 5) on MTV, starts with a close-up of the song’s co-star, Rihanna , singing the chorus in front of a burning house. We then see Fox sitting in the living room of a home with a flame in the palms of her hands. From there, Eminem raps in a field. The video transitions back to the story of seemingly doomed lovers, and we see Fox and Monaghan lying in bed asleep. The first to wake, Fox sees the name “Cindy” written on her boyfriend’s hand and a phone number underneath. She angrily wakes him up, and scenes of them fighting and then making love intertwine, showing how their relationship goes from one extreme to the next. As the second verse starts, we get a flashback of how the couple met: in a bar. The attraction was instant, and they proceed to shoplift vodka from a liquor store. Later, we return to the bar, as Monaghan hits a man over the head with a bottle just because he was playing pool with Fox. Toward the end of the second verse, Eminem joins Rihanna, performing in front of the burning house. As the video progresses, we see more of the war going on between the two lovers. A flame eventually covers Fox, Monaghan and Eminem in three separate instances. The video’s last shot goes right back to the beginning of the clap, as the lovers lie in bed asleep. “I think we tried as hard as we could to not glorify the violence, to try and explain that this was a relationship that is by no means ideal and a relationship that probably should have ended a lot sooner than it did,” Monaghan told MTV News recently. “The concept of ‘Love the Way You Lie’ was essentially a look at the relationship that Eminem was in with his wife, Kim, so I kind of felt like I was playing Eminem a little bit, and Megan Fox was kind of playing Kim. “It’s the story of them getting to know each other, and it’s the story of their tumultuous relationship, and it was the story of the breakdown of their relationship,” he continued. “Ultimately, what I think he’s trying to say in the song … is that he should have walked away a little bit quicker than he did and not let it get as messy as it did.”

‘He should have walked away a little bit quicker than he did and not let it get as messy as it did,’ says Dominic Monaghan, who stars in the clip with Megan Fox. By Gil Kaufman Megan Fox and Dominic Monaghan shoot the music video for “Love the Way You Lie” Photo: Eric Ford/ On Location News The world has gotten plenty of glimpses at the troubled relationship between Eminem and his two-time ex-wife, Kim. But in the new video for “Love the Way You Lie,” the angst-filled rapper takes on domestic violence, a topic collaborator Rihanna is no stranger to. While filming the clip with director Joseph Kahn (Lady Gaga, Gwen Stefani), “Lost” actor Dominic Monaghan said he suffered some bumps and bruises in order to get the serious message across. “I think we tried as hard as we could to not glorify the violence, to try and explain that this was a relationship that is by no means ideal and a relationship that probably should have ended a lot sooner than it did,” Monaghan told MTV News. “The concept of ‘Love the Way You Lie’ was essentially a look at the relationship that Eminem was in with his wife, Kim, so I kind of felt like I was playing Eminem a little bit, and Megan Fox was kind of playing Kim,” he said of his kissing co-star in the clip , which premieres Thursday night (August 5) at 9 p.m. ET/PT on MTV, hot on the heel of Em’s eight VMA nominations . “It’s the story of them getting to know each other, and it’s the story of their tumultuous relationship, and it was the story of the breakdown of their relationship,” Monaghan added. “Ultimately, what I think he’s trying to say in the song … is that he should have walked away a little bit quicker than he did and not let it get as messy as it did.” Trying to get into Eminem’s mind-set in scenes such as the one in which he confronts a man who is talking to Fox’s character, Monaghan said he led with anger. “All his motivation, every forward step that he takes is based on his anger,” he said of the character. “We’re supposed to be desperately in love, like Bonnie and Clyde style, like Sid and Nancy, John and Yoko … Eminem and Kim.” The video has a number of scenes of domestic violence, in which the couple get physical with each other, and Monaghan said he didn’t escape without drawing a bit of blood. “I get to throw Megan around quite a lot … throw her up against the wall and then she throws me up against a wall and smacks me in the face and spits in my face … and I chase her around the house and smash windows and walls.” Monaghan said he injured his knee as well as his hand during the shoot, the latter when he punched a mirror and the former when he braced his left knee on the floor while punching his video rival more than 50 times. While the video throws a spotlight on the dangers of an abusive relationship with the help of two glitzy Hollywood stars, Monaghan said the message about the destructive, ugly nature of domestic violence is front and center. “There’s nothing sexy or cool or fun about being in a violent relationship,” he said. “Whether it’s her being violent to you or you being violent to her … violence both ways or any kind of destructive relationship is something you should probably get out of.” One of the messages of the video is that Eminem probably should have bailed on his relationship earlier than he did, Monaghan said, and the challenge of the clip was taking a serous subject and making it into a good video that helps sell the song. “A good video can still have a message of caution in it,” he said. Rihanna — whose very public assault at the hands of then-boyfriend Chris Brown made the topic especially sensitive for her — recently told “Access Hollywood” that the song was something she “needed” to do. “It’s something that, you know, [Eminem and I have] both experienced, you know, on different sides, different ends of the table,” she said. “It just was authentic. It was real. It was believable for us to do a record like that, but it was also something that needed to be done, and the way he did it was so clever. He pretty much just broke down the cycle of domestic violence, and it’s something that a lot of people don’t have a lot of insight on, so this song is a really, really powerful song, and it touches a lot of people.” Don’t forget to tune in to MTV on tonight at 9 p.m. ET/PT for the premiere of Eminem’s “Love the Way You Lie,” and check MTVNews.com for full coverage of the clip. T.I. Records Six New King Uncaged Tracks With Kanye West

‘I just left Hawaii with Kanye,’ Tip said on the red carpet of ‘Takers’ premiere. By Shaheem Reid T.I. arrives at the premiere of “Takers” in Hollywood on August 4 Photo: Frazer Harrison/ Getty Images Call it the reunion of the King of the South and Martin Louis the King Jr. The last time T.I. hooked up with Kanye West , the two made the undeniable hip-hop anthem “Swagger Like Us.” And the pair recently took half a dozen more shots at making another classic. You can add the Louis Vuitton Don to the list of acclaimed producers to work on Tip’s next LP, King Uncaged (due in September). “I just left Hawaii with Kanye,” Tip said last night in Hollywood on the red carpet for the world premiere of “Takers.” “We did six records.” The King of the South recently told MTV News how excited he was about going in the lab with some other track emperors. “We got a few big, big, big sessions coming up next week: Timbaland, Swizz Beatz,” T.I. revealed . “I’m trying to show up and show out every time.” By early July, the collaborations, at least the ones with Swizz Beatz , were done. “What we just did is bigger than those,” Swizz said over the Fourth of July weekend about the two new records he produced for Tip. “It’s bigger than ‘Swing Ya Rag,’ it’s bigger than all of those. We’re growing as artists. That’s one of the things I wanted to focus on with Tip, was: ‘We did that already. We don’t need to compete with nobody. You up there.’ Everything we gotta do, we gotta stay leaders. That’s how we got to where we at now. He gave me his OK on that. Gave me the clear lane. And we’re gone. Trust me on that. The first joint, it’s nice. Crazy! The second joint is taking the world over. It’s a positive message, and I’ll let him explain the rest of the story, because he would be glad to. [It’s] very musical, but still with that swag in it.” Related Photos ‘Takers’ Premiere Seizes Hollywood Related Artists T.I. Kanye West

Dominic Monaghan Dishes On Kissing Megan Fox In Eminem Video

‘Lost’ actor smooches with Fox in ‘Love the Way You Lie,’ premiering Thursday. By Gil Kaufman Megan Fox and Dominic Monaghan on the set of the music video for “Love the Way You Lie” Photo: Eric Ford/ On Location News When shooting the clip for the chart-topping hit “Love the Way You Lie,” it helped that Dominic Monaghan was a huge Eminem fan. But it also didn’t hurt that the shoot called for him to engage in a make-out session with former “Transformers” hottie Megan Fox. “What is it like kissing Megan Fox? It’s all right,” he laughed. “No I’m just kidding. It’s fine, it’s work. She’s married. I have a lot of respect for marriage.” Aware of her recent nuptials to Brian Austin Green, Monaghan revealed that one of the first things he said to Fox when they got on set was, “Look, I know that you’re married and I don’t want to do anything inappropriate. And she said, ‘It’s all kind of inappropriate, huh?’ ” In a theme the rapper has come back to time and again, Monaghan said the concept of the clip revolves around domestic violence and Eminem’s tumultuous relationship with his twice-ex wife, Kim. “It’s the story of them getting to know each other and it’s the story of their tumultuous relationship and it’s the story of the breakdown of their relationship,” Monaghan explained of the video, which will premiere on Thursday night on MTV, hot on the heels of Eminem’s eight VMA nominations . In order to tap into the sometimes contentious camaraderie that Marshall and Kim have shared over the years, Monaghan hearkened back to some of the most notorious couples of all time. “We’re supposed to be desperately in love, like Sid and Nancy, John and Yoko … Eminem and Kim,” he said. “Though I tried as hard as I could to make her laugh and have fun with her. I think we got on pretty well.” In one scene in a bar, Monaghan described a scenario where he has to roll up on another gentleman who is talking to Fox’s character, and the actress asked what she should call him when he comes over and is about to hit the guy. “I said, call me Slim,” he said. ” ‘Cuz that’s who I am essentially. I was playing Slim Shady and trying as hard as I could to be Slim Shady.” For motivation, the German-born, British-bred actor said he listened to Em’s first two albums a lot and tried to get into a “nasty, dirty … white trash” frame of mind, strutting around the set in either no shirt or a dirty cut-off T-shirt and thinking about one of his favorite snacks, Twinkies. Fox donated her fee for appearing in the clip to the Sojourn House, a shelter for abused women and children. Shirley Sherrod Reminds CNN’s Gergen of Nelson Mandela

Exhibiting an extreme case of the media euphoria over Shirley Sherrod’s vindication, moments before Secretary of Agriculture Tom Vilsack appeared before the cameras CNN senior political analyst David Gergen gushed to Rick Sanchez: I have to tell you, Rick, I don’t want to put her on too high a pedestal. I don’t think she would want that. But I kept thinking about Nelson Mandela as I heard her story, because he had to overcome the same sort of hatred on both sides. And he became this larger-than-life figure and I think we all loved him and revered him because he was able to grow like that. And there is that quality about her story. 48 hours without a job just like 27 years in prison. And how did she experience “hatred on both sides?” Gergen continued, at about 4:45 PM EDT Wednesday afternoon on CNN’s Rick’s List: And as you know, so many of us who come from the South have lived with race and have had to sort of struggle, sometimes had to struggle in our souls to reach this plane. And she sort of reached this place of ascendance, which I really respect in her. Being compared to Mandela is the ultimate tribute from a liberal. In the introduction to his book, ‘Mandela’s Way: Fifteen Lessons on Life, Love, and Courage,’ which was published in April, Time magazine Managing Editor Richard Stengel enthused : It is impossible to write about Nelson Mandela these days and not compare him to another potentially transformational black leader, Barack Obama. The parallels are many… While it took twenty-seven years in prison to mold the Nelson Mandela we know, the forty-eight-year-old American President seems to have achieved a Mandela-like temperament without the long years of sacrifice. Obama’s self-discipline, his willingness to listen and to share credit, his inclusion of his rivals in his administration, and his belief that people want things explained, all seem like a twenty-first century version of Mandela’s values and persona.
