Jersey Shore Recap: A Leopard Never Sheds its Stripes

This week on the Jersey Shore, the “family” continued to experience all kinds of ups and downs. Vinny fell for a lesbian, Pauly acquired a new stalker, JWoww fought with Roger, Snooki acted ridiculously and no one could figure Mike out. Pretty standard stuff, really. We are happy/sad to report that no one threw down! How did it all play out in Seaside Heights? Let’s recap Jersey Shore , THG style! The Situation gets the dirt from his brother on his recent date with Deena’s sister. Yep, that happened. As if this crew weren’t incestuous enough. Minus 12 . “The real Mike is back and I love watching all the $h!t he does.” – Pauly, after Mike decides he’s going all out to start some $h!t again. Game on, brah. Plus 5 . Mike’s plan to CRUSH Snooki by having his boy The Unit tell Jionni all about Sitch and Snook’s sexy times failed because Unit was in Miami. Too bad? Plus 11 . Snooki tries to hang out with The Situation. Always a dangerous move. Minus 3 . Vinny juggles two girls at the bar. Good to be back, right? Plus 11 . Deena keeps Vinny’s other girl occupied. Wing-meatball! Plus 8 . The more “hotass” of the two is Nicki, who is a lesbian. Vinny tried to get it in anyway, and Plus 7 for the effort, but Minus 14 for delusions. She bounced. JWoww ducks out early, hella annoyed that Roger was dodging her calls even though he was down the street on the boardwalk. We smell drama. Minus 9 . The next morning, Jenni finally got ahold of Roger, who said he didn’t have a phone and that’s why he took the day off. Sketchy, and she knows it. Minus 1 . Snooki attempts to master the art of sitting in a hammock. Fail. Minus 5 . Snooki cleans the Smush Room bed. Plus 15 for even attempting that, but Minus 40 for the imagery of some of the things that have probably gone on there. Snooki finds a hiding spot on the deck. Very stealthy. Plus 27 . Snooki complains about sunlight and mused that it’s always dark in Arkansas. Minus 10 because that’s not even true, and Minus 30 because she meant Alaska. Probably. Vinny’ smush with the backup girl was average. Good to know. Minus 5 . “Released some demons, you know.”- Vinny. Gross. Minus 13 . Deena and Snooki decide to skip out on their shift at the Shore Store. BOLD move, since it’s not actually a real job and the store only “hires” them for PR. Minus 10 . “Danny’s such an annoying.” – Deena. At least he’s not trying to “do sex.” Plus 8 . Pauly D has an encounter with his new stalker. Bosnian Grilled Cheese set the bar pretty high, so this girl had better be aware of what an elite club she’s in. Plus 4 . Are stalkers required to wear the same thing every day? Plus 3 . Roger told Jen he’d be an hour late for their date, which they canceled, as JWoww ripped him a new one without him having a chance to respond. Minus 8 . No Sammi and Ronnie drama to speak of, at least! Plus 22 . In a turn of events, Sitch went out for a drink with Deena and Snooki. Who he wants to ruin … about half the time. Dude’s moods are hard to predict, but Plus 5 . “A leopard never sheds its stripes.” – Deena, on Sitch. SO true. Plus 20 . The Situation teases Deena about becoming brother-and sister-in-law, but then gets nervous when Deena’s sister calls the house. Plus 9 for the expression above. Imagine Mike being your brother-in-law, though. Exactly. Minus 5 . Danny tells Deena and Snooki that if they get fired, they’ll have to leave the Seaside house. Minus 8 because there is absolutely no way MTV’s letting that happen. Pauly D and Vinny run into JWoww’s boyfriend at the gym. Dude’s not small. Plus 2 . He’s also not backing down after the way she acted, he tells them. Plus 3 . JWoww decides to swallow her pride and apologize to Roger. Plus 30 . The call (and episode) ended with an ultimatum: “So what’s it going to be?” Dun dun dun! EPISODE TOTAL: +17! SEASON TOTAL: +174! Jersey Shore …

J. Cole’s Grind Earns Him Best New Artist Grammy Nod

Coveted nomination follows #1 debut album, Cole World: The Sideline Story, and a string of well-received mixtapes. By Nadeska Alexis J. Cole Photo: C. Flanigan/FilmMagic It’s been a long road to release for J. Cole, who finally dropped his debut album, Cole World: The Sideline Story, in September after putting out several mixtapes. Now, the Roc Nation signee is seeing his hard work pay off with a nomination for Best New Artist at the 2012 Grammy Awards . Cole World debuted at #1 in September and has sold more than 500,000 copies to date, making it an impressive freshman LP for a rapper. Make no mistake, though, Jermaine Cole’s success has been a long time in the making. After dropping his mixtape The Come Up in 2007, the North Carolina native polished his craft and released The Warm Up two years later, catching the ear of Jay-Z — specifically with the hit single “Lights Please” — and landing himself a record deal at Roc Nation. Even with Hov as his mentor, however, Jermaine continued to push things along with his own solo efforts. His debut album was hit with a series of delays and he made up for the wait by releasing his late 2010 mixtape Friday Night Lights. Between his tapes and a few free-floating singles he’d recorded over the years, Cole had enough material to warrant an opening spot on Rihanna’s Loud Tour in June. When that wrapped, Cole kicked off his Any Given Sunday series in the summer of 2011, which found him releasing new tracks or EPs weekly, leading right into the debut of his first studio album. That persistent grind resulted in noteworthy album sales and a Grammy nomination, which Jay-Z said is well-deserved . “I think it’s great for him, because I’m sure it’s a dream of his. We grew up seeing Michael Jackson, and I’m sure he grew up seeing whatever moment stuck in his mind, so I know it’s great for him to do that,” Hov told MTV News. “I think he’s already won Best New Artist, to me. His journey is what I’m really excited about.” Tune into the Grammys on Sunday on CBS at 8 p.m. ET to see if Cole takes home the award for Best New Artist. His competitors in the category are Nicki Minaj, Skrillex, Bon Iver and the Band Perry. Chaos! Profanity! Wardrobe malfunctions! Don’t miss Sway and James Montgomery live from the Grammys red carpet this Sunday, February 12, for a full three hours of mayhem, starting at 5 p.m. ET on MTV.com. And the fun doesn’t end Sunday: MTV News has you covered until the Grammy hangover wears off! Related Videos A Guide To The Grammys 2012 Related Artists J. Cole

Will Katy Perry Or Rihanna ‘Pop’ At The Grammys?

Lady Gaga and Adele also up for two major pop trophies at Sunday’s show. By Jocelyn Vena Katy Perry in her video for “Firework” Photo: EMI The pop stars nominated at this year’s Grammy Awards couldn’t be more different from one another, both visually and sonically. In the two biggest pop categories, Best Pop Vocal Album and Best Pop Solo Performance, every spectrum of pop is represented: from soulful to candy-colored and everything in between. As the Grammy Awards approach, MTV News will break down the contenders in both categories. So, here we go. Best Pop Vocal Album Adele’s 21 has six nominations under its belt at this year’s show, including the biggie, Album of the Year. Since its release nearly a year ago, Adele’s heartbreak opus reigned on radio, the charts and the collective hearts of the lovelorn everywhere. It boasts production from Ryan Tedder, Paul Epworth and Rick Rubin, and tracks the singer’s heartbreak after a split from a former beau. Cee Lo Green gave the world a big “F— You” with his The Lady Killer , which dropped in November 2010, and the album has sustained its momentum thanks to that one track (and Cee Lo’s “The Voice” gig). The album got some songwriting and production help from fellow nominee, Bruno Mars, and in addition to this nod, its track “Fool for You” is also up for some gold. Lady Gaga’s love-yourself album, Born This Way, is a metal-disco composition about romance, New York City and couture. With production from RedOne, Fernando Garibay and DJ White Shadow, the album was released last May, and while the sound looked to the future, it also paid homage to her past when she enlisted the late Clarence Clemons from Bruce Springsteen’s E Street Band and Brian May of Queen. Bruno Mars crooned his way to the top of the charts with his debut album Doo-Wops & Hooligans. Displaying his love for melodies and lyrics about love and loss, Mars’ experiment in mixing doo-wop and new millennium production value managed to make him a household name and a big-time nominee. Album of the Year-nominated Loud was Rihanna’s return to form. After a dark turn on Rated R, Ri was feeling sunnier, saucier and sassier on the 2010 album that featured production from Stargate and Tricky Stewart and tracks like the fist-pumping “Only Girl (In The World)” and the reggae-influenced “Man Down.” Best Pop Solo Performance On “Someone Like You,” Adele’s big voice and knack for heartache was on full display. The second 21 single got a songwriting and production assist from Semisonic frontman Dan Wilson (the guy who gave us “Closing Time” in the ’90s) and follows Adele as she comes to terms with the loss of her former flame. Like Adele, Bruno Mars put his heart and soul on the line on the Doo-Wops & Hooligans uber-ballad, “Grenade.” The song, produced by the Mars-fronted the Smeezingtons, tracks a distraught man as he realizes the woman he loves doesn’t feel the same way about him. Lady Gaga had been teasing “You and I” for some time, but before the finished version appeared on Born This Way, no one could have guessed what May, Gaga and super producer Mutt Lange could have cooked up. What they released was a funky, smashing ode to reclaiming lost love. Katy Perry hadn’t touched on deeper issues on earlier singles, but when it came to her Teenage Dream feel-good anthem, “Firework,” she went there and it took on a life of its own. With Ester Dean and Stargate working with Perry on the song, it topped the charts and became the fourth in a record-breaking string of #1 hits off that album. Like Perry, Pink gave a voice to the disenfranchised on “F—in’ Perfect” (off her greatest hits collection that dropped in 2010). Working with Max Martin and Shellback on the track, she hit the top of the charts and empowered her fans thanks lyrics like, “You’re f—ing perfect to me.” Who do you think will “pop” at the Grammys this year? ‘Amazing Spider-Man’ Trailer: Five Key Scenes

Latest preview reveals Spidey’s new mask — and his attitude. By Kevin P. Sullivan Andrew Garfield in “The Amazing Spider-Man” Photo: Marvel / Columbia Pictures “Spider-Man” fans who stayed up late Monday were treated to the second trailer from the superhero’s upcoming reboot. The preview for “The Amazing Spider-Man” showed off new action sequences, a transformed reptilian villain and the smart-ass attitude fans of the comics have missed in recent years. We’ve watched the trailer more times than we care to mention and took the opportunity to break down our favorite moments. Here are the five key scenes from the “Amazing Spider-Man” trailer: Mask You’d have to think back hard, but believe it or not, the first trailer only included a glimpse at Spider-Man’s mask. It may not seem like that big of a deal, but it isn’t until you see the old red-and-blue for a period longer than half a second that you realized what you were missing. The new suit looks good, if slightly over-stylized, but the mask brings it home and makes it feel like a “Spider-Man” movie. Attitude “Spider-Man 3” may have caused you to forget that Spider-Man is actually kind of a smart-ass and not just an emo guy who dances in the street with side bangs and zero self-awareness. In “Amazing,” the wisecracking Spidey returns to make a carjacker feel like a complete dumbass, as he should. Andrew Garfield ‘s take on the hero brings back the fun, intentionally. Mr. and Mrs. Parker The official plot synopsis released a few weeks ago focused on Dr. Connors’ connection to the flighty parents that Mr. and Mrs. Parker were. The trailer plays off that new information and shows Peter hunting down the one-armed doctor to find out what happened to the parents he barely knew. It’s an element we haven’t seen in the previous films and one “Amazing” wants to put front and center. Lizard With the extra emphasis on Curt Connors comes an extended look at his bigger, greener side. After teases with flipped cars, we get to see the Lizard fully transformed, albeit a fleeting peek. They wouldn’t want to spoil it all for us, but we saw enough to confirm that the PEZ dispenser was, in fact, accurate. The Spire The trailer finishes with a shot from an action sequence that most likely takes place near the end of the film. Peter stands on the spire of a skyscraper, dressed in Spider-Man attire from the neck down, but he won’t be standing for long. The spike begins to tumble, and Pete struggles to not fall with it. The shot brings the serious action notes the first trailer lacked and makes us question how much we haven’t seen from the film. Charlize Theron Has Excellent Taste in Beer

In a world where Spike Lee has his own variety of Absolut and Will Ferrell devotedly shills for Old Milwaukee , it’s important to point out when the intersection of celebrities and booze actually results in something encouraging. Take Charlize Theron, who was photographed Sunday carrying some of America’s finest craft beer to a Super Bowl party. A whole case of it . The Delaware brewery Dogfish Head is renowned far and wide for its IPAs, particularly the 60-minute variety of which Theron rocked over the weekend. At 6 percent ABV, it is the brewery’s smoothest, least potent IPA; the 90-minute and 120-minute versions top out around 9 percent and 20 percent, each named after the length of the brew’s sustained boil and continuous hopping. Which may not mean anything to non-beer enthusiasts, but trust me: After having to sit through five minutes of Super Bowl ads for something called “Bud Light Platinum,” little is as refreshing to a connoisseur as seeing an A-list, Oscar-winning actress treat our biggest sporting event as the stepping-up opportunity that it is. Anyway, Theron should be commended, and may all of Hollywood take note. Also: I will totally lend my likeness out to any brewer needing a little push on upcoming game days. Inquire within . I’m looking at you, Ommegang . Ahem. [via Daily Mail ] Follow S.T. VanAirsdale on Twitter . Follow Movieline on Twitter .

Exclusive Gallery: 13 Moments from 96 Minutes

Four lives, one fateful night — tensions run high in this April’s 96 Minutes , in which two college friends (Brittany Snow and Twilight ‘s Christian Serratos) clash with a pair of Atlanta teens (Evan Ross and J. Michael Trautmann) after a carjacking gone wrong. Filmmaker Aimee Lagos makes her feature debut with 96 Minutes following her award-winning short Underground , again examining what happens when class and social lines collide; after the jump, Lagos takes us through 13 moments from the shooting of her film. Filmed over the course of 18 days in Atlanta, GA, 96 Minutes debuted at SXSW and also stars David Oyelowo ( Rise of the Planet of the Apes , Red Tails , Lincoln ). Click here to launch the full gallery with captions from director Lagos. Lagos: “Evan Ross, who plays Dre in the film, is in the foreground here with Hosea Chanchez in the background playing the cop. This is a very poignant scene in the film taken right from what I saw happen everyday when I was working in the inner city. In this scene police officers accost Dre without provocation as he’s walking home from school – it’s a humiliating and demoralizing experience that too many young people have to deal with on a daily basis.” Lagos: “THE PORCH in Mechanicsville – one of my favorite locations in the film. Markice Kesan Moore, Pill, Jon Chaffin, Dale Neal and J.Michael Trautmann, hang out between takes of their funny if volatile scene where Kevin begs to join their street crew.” Lagos: “Brittany Snow (Carley) and Christian Serratos (Lena) rehearse a long walk and talk scene where the two girls bond after Carley rescues Lena from a potentially painful run in with her ex.” Lagos: “This is an incredibly intense and heart-rending scene between David Oyelowo (Duane) and Brittany Snow (Carley) that comes right at the climax of the film. It’s one of the most visually arresting scenes of the film shot by the incredibly talented Cinematographer, Michael Fimognari.” Click here for the full gallery . 96 Minutes debuts in theaters on April 27.

Super Bowl Movie Ads: Winners And Losers

From ‘The Avengers’ to ’21 Jump Street’ and ‘John Carter,’ we rate the hits and misses of Sunday night’s movie trailer premieres. By Kevin P. Sullivan Channing Tatum and Jonah Hill in ’21 Jump Street’ Photo: Columbia Pictures Whether you watched the entire game until the final nerve-racking moments or you found out the score through a friend’s Facebook update, you probably know by now that the New York Giants won Super Bowl XLVI . But if you weren’t paying attention to the commercials, you don’t know that the real winner of last night’s game was a different kind of giant. A green, radioactive giant. That’s right, “Marvel’s The Avengers” and many other highly anticipated movies rolled out new footage and trailers during the Super Bowl commercial breaks. But not all of them were as successful as the Hulk, his team and their offensive drive. Let’s talk about the big winners and losers of Sunday night’s movie ads. Winner: “The Avengers” The Avengers have assembled. This was the trailer of the night, and the extended online version was only cooler. For one of this summer’s biggest films, it was seriously lacking in badass lead-up material until last night. The spot finally gave some validation that this may be the movie we have been waiting for. Loser: “Battleship” When the first teaser thrown at the audience reads “From Hasbro, the company that brought you ‘Transformers,’ ” it already looks like trouble. As much as we want to root for Taylor Kitsch, we’ve had enough of the Transformers-inspired mechanical mayhem. Also, boom goes Rihanna. Winner: “21 Jump Street” Advanced screenings of the Jonah Hill-written comedy have left people raving, and the Super Bowl commercial delivered some solid laughs. “You look super young. Were you held forward?” Perfect comeback, Channing. Loser: “John Carter” TV Spot Why would Disney spend millions of dollars to air an ad during the Super Bowl for their effects-heavy movie but decide to zoom out of the scenes to spell the title out with them? It defies logic. Winner: “John Carter” Extended Online Spot It has the same stupid letter thing, but it also, you know, shows us actual scenes from the movie at full size. This was the ad that would have gotten us excited for the fantasy epic. Loser: “Act of Valor” The concept of watching actual Navy SEALS in a film would seem more appealing if the movie itself didn’t look so generic. Winner: “Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance” The movie has already been widely dismissed as a disaster, but we will never say no to a tight 30 seconds of Nic Cage with his head on fire. Loser: “The Dictator” When the joke begins to feel old after just 30 seconds, it’s not a good sign. Winner: “The Hunger Games” The hotly anticipated YA adaptation had the benefit of having a great first trailer to add to already high expectations. They can count their Super Bowl ad as their second victory. Loser: “Dr. Seuss’ The Lorax” IMAX Tree-D. Special Jury Prize: “G.I. Joe: Retaliation” Basic physics states that after Stephen Sommers’ first “G.I. Joe” movie, no sequel could save the series. Thankfully, physics don’t account for Dwayne Johnson and ninja cliff fights, because, despite all expectations, “G.I. Joe: Retaliation” looks fantastic.
