Daily Kos Granny: We Deserve Many More 9/11s for Our Shabby Imperialism

Taking in the current furor over the tiny-church-of-Koran-bonfires story, The Washington Post front page today strangely suggested “Debate may drown out quite 9/11 reflections,” with “post-attack unity lost.” Does anyone remember any 9/11 anniversaries after the first one that were all about “unity” and were free of partisanship? The blog Daily Kos was lobbing bombs at “right-wing white guys” Wednesday. In her praise of the new book-length rant “American Taliban” by top Kosmonaut Markos Moutlisas, “Hippie grandmother” Jane Stillwater pleaded, “Right-Wing white guys, it’s time for you to stop acting like General Custer.” You have no idea how lucky we are that this tactic of “bringing the war home” has not happened in America except only once so far. We have been just plain LUCKY so far — that Middle Easterners, Latin Americans, Africans and Asians haven’t dragged any more of Eisenhower’s or Johnson’s or Nixon’s or Reagan’s or Bush’s or Obama’s wars out of the streets of cities like Saigon, Mogadishu, Gaza, San Salvador, East Timor, Santiago, Shanghai, Baghdad, Tehran, Brazzaville, Port-au-Prince and Kabul and into the streets of our American cities. We have been very lucky that, so far, we have only suffered just one 9-11 — when you consider the many past decades of America’s habitual and continual shabby treatment of “Others” all over the world. You Right-Wingers may not care what happens to yourselves as a result of your constant agitation and hate, but please stop putting MY life in danger. “Just one 9/11” does seem to ignore the other terrorist attacks — World Trade Center I, the Khobar Towers, the embassies in Kenya and Tanzania, the USS Cole, Fort Hood, and so on — whose death counts weren’t as enormous. Conservatives are apparently itching for all of America to be incinerated by terrorist attacks with their “Aryan lynch mob mentality”: By creating all of these new categories of people to hate and categorizing over half of all Americans as belonging to “The Other,” Teabaggers and other right-wingers are in reality starting to put most of the rest of us “white guys” in danger. How’s that old joke go? When the Lone Ranger and Tonto are surrounded by Indians, the Lone Ranger turns to Tonto and says, “What are we going to do now!” And Tonto replies, “What do you mean ‘we’, White Man?” In a demographically changing America, it doesn’t make any sense at all for America’s right-wing self-appointed “white men” to go around aggressively alienating their neighbors. How do you think that’s gonna play out a few years down the road when “The “Other” (including browns, blacks, gays, women, Jews, Muslims, Asians, poor people, etc.), those whom the right-wing white-man demographic seems to hate so much, is firmly in the majority? Not so good. Being a “White” person myself, I certainly don’t look forward to seeing over half of my country turning against me in the next several years. Just cut it out, right-wing white guys! You simply cannot afford to go around doing the Wounded Knee thing any more. Or the Amos ‘n’ Andy thing. Or the Tanforan or Manzanar thing. Or the Ground Zero Mosque thing either. Who was it that said, “Do unto others as you would have others do unto you”? Obviously it was no one whose example you appear to follow or respect. Further, the right-wing’s current Aryan lynch mob mentality is only effective when public opinion is on its side. And the tide of public opinion is turning — because, ultimately, no one likes nasty. Public opinion may be turning slowly — but it IS turning. And you guys are gonna get caught in the undertow. Don’t drag me down with you. Not only that, but this right-wing “White is Right” lynch-mob mentality isn’t just affecting us here stateside. There’s a whole “Other” world out there beyond our borders that is being effected as well. And while there are only three million of “us” here in America. there are over six billion of “Them” out there Beyond the Pale. So please stop wildly waving that red flag around, guys — because you have definitely attracted the attention of a whole stampede of rather pissed-off bulls that are starting to charge right at you (and at me too!) You think that “Ground Zero” in New York was bad? You appear to be practically pleading to turn all of America into “Ground Zero” too. (Hat tip: Kathryn Street)

Rachel Bilson Because She’s Too Cute

I thought that I would finish off the day with some nice shots of cutie Rachel Bilson walking the streets in a sweet white dress because she’s almost perfect in my mind. I was kinda hoping that with all the strange weather we’ve been having this summer Mother Nature might kick up some wind or cover her in rain so that at least we’d get some action shots, but I guess she’s in California and everyday is perfect there. Stupid California.

Open Thread: Gang Members Hold Press Conference to Criticize Chicago Police

You read that right . Gang members in the most violent city in the nation criticized the police for being ineffective in combating…gang violence. At a news conference organized by self-identified gang members Thursday morning, several speakers complained that police and city officials do not respect them, and that the only way to curb violence is to provide jobs and improve their community. The men who spoke out Thursday morning blamed poverty, drugs and a lack of jobs for the problems in the streets. They also said that Chicago Police Supt. Jody Weis’ meeting with so-called gang leaders was a waste of time. But when asked what could be done right now to stop the daily barrage of bullets on Chicago streets, they didn’t have an answer.  Could Chicago’s crime problem have anything to do with the fact that they consider taking policy advice from the same violent criminals responsible for that problem?

Nas Gets ‘Nasty’ On ‘Last Real, Part 2’

‘I was feeling the vibe of the streets and sewers,’ Queens MC tells MTV News of Internet burner that leaked as ‘Power, Paper & Pu—‘ By Thomas A. Harden Nas Photo: C. Flanigan/ Getty Images Don’t call it a comeback. The Internet was set abuzz over the weekend, when a new Nas track, “Power, Paper & Pu—,” was leaked from DJ Green Lantern’s latest mixtape, Invasion Radio 2K10. The stellar freestyle features the Queensbridge MC in rare form. In recent years, fans and critics alike have mulled the direction of the rapper’s artistic output. Some even argued that Nasty Nas had gone on hiatus. But to hear God’s Son tell it, he’s still the same MC who gave the game Illmatic. “[Nasty Nas] never left,” Nas confirmed to MTV News via email. “I recorded the song in my hometown of New York City. I was feeling the vibe of the streets and sewers, [which] helped me get in that zone.” On Monday night, Funkmaster Flex aired the track on New York’s Hot 97 and then posted the CDQ version on his site under the Internet-approved title “Last Real, Part 2.” Rap Radar, one of the first sites to circulate the original track, later posted the newest version. “Wait, is it ’94 again? Ha!” Rap Radar’s Brian Miller joked when we asked about his reaction to the new material. “Nas sounds confident and arrogant. The lyrics are almost nostalgic.” The cut reunites Nas with longtime collaborator Salaam Remi and samples Herb Alpert’s 1979 jazz hit “Rise.” In his verse, Esco channels his ’90s-era delivery and spits the kind of gritty bars that first made him. “Cars with police radars/ On highways bopping/ Bullpen therapy/ Cellblock dodging/ Pissy stairways/ Miss them days, not when/ They shut down stores when I’m shopping,” Nas raps over the trumpet-laden track. “Used to be pop-locking, train-hopping/ Face covered in stocking/ Six-pack Bud-drinking gambler/ F— them cameras/ In front of the man, sing the hustla’s mantra/ Hands are luck/ More hits than Gamble and Huff.” He later wraps up: “I’m at the Waldorf/ Van Cleef under the sleeve/ Save the small talk/ I feel alive/ New Porsches/ Jordan’s No. 5/ I already said, ‘I’m the last real n—a alive.’ ” Nas explained that he had been a fan of Alpert’s record — the Notorious B.I.G.’s 1997 smash “Hypnotize” also samples it — and asked Salaam to take it and concoct something special. “Salaam and I are always working together,” Nas said. “I loved the song and asked Salaam to cook it up.” The pair linked up to record the track at New York’s Manhattan Center. “It was just an idea he had,” Remi told us. “But that’s a process we always go through. Really, it’s all about the vibe of what we’re trying to go for. Nas will throw ideas at me and I’ll bounce them right back. We try not to overthink it and let the music speak for itself.” The classic sample is a step in the right direction for Nas, as the MC has at times come under criticism for the beats he chooses. “For years, fans have said Nas’ Achilles heel has been his beat selection. But I’m optimistic,” Miller said. “Nas has always sounded good over Remi’s production, remember ‘Made You Look’?” “Realistically, it’s nothing that’s ever foreign,” Remi added of their creative process. “We always work together. We work when nobody is thinking that we are. It’s not even working — we just do what we do. It’s always going.” Despite his recent marital and legal troubles , “Power, Paper & Pu—” projects a reinvigorated Nas ready to reclaim his position among today’s best. “We’re slowly seeing the return of the Nas we all know and love,” Miller declared. “He was on Tim Westwood’s [radio] show a few weeks back and said that he was going to return to that style of rap. He gave us a small sample on the last verse of ‘Strong Will Continue’ with Damian Marley. His last solo LPs really didn’t hold up, so he can only get better from here. He has a lot to talk about, from being divorced to his child support case. I think the best is yet to come.” In fact, Salaam revealed that fans should be on the lookout for more Nas songs in the near future. “It can be firing at any moment,” Remi said. “It’s just about when it’s time to let it loose, and he’s about to unleash another flurry of music through the multiple projects he has coming out.” What do you think of Nas reviving his Golden Era flow? Vanessa Hudgens In Far Too Much Clothing

Vanessa Hudgens has become one of my favorite new hotties, even though I don’t really know exactly what she looks like because she always wears her stupid hat so low. It’s probably for the best. Anyhow, here she is walking the streets in far too much clothing. I don’t mean she’s too covered up, I mean that she’s got about four layers of clothing on. I don’t get it. Luckily even with all the layers we still get a decent peek at her little cleavage. It’s something.

Anna Paquin In Her Shorty Shorts

I’ve never really understood the appeal of Anna Paquin , in True Blood she’s just too damn annoying, but I do like to see her little boobies pop up every other episode or so. Here she is out walking the streets in her little shorty shorts. They’re not exactly nude scenes but for a good clean site like this one they’ll do just fine… For now. Actually, these are pretty much the equivalent of Anna Paquin bikini pictures . I still have no idea why she swims in a t-shirt .

For the first three Saturdays of August, three of these pools — repurposed dumpster bins that have been cleaned, lined and filled with water — are making an appearance on the east side of Park Avenue between 40th and 41st Streets, as part of the third Summer Streets Initiative.
