Oscar Pistorius in Court: Olympian Cries, Does Not Enter Plea on Murder Charge

Oscar Pistorius broke down in tears in a South African courtroom Friday after being charged with the premeditated murder of his girlfriend, Reeva Steenkamp . The Olympic sprinter’s attorneys requested to postpone the bail hearing, as did the prosecution. He did not enter a plea and will remain in custody. In his first public response , Pistorius’s family and management team said in a statement that “the alleged murder is disputed in the strongest terms.” The statement also said Pistorius “would like to send his deepest sympathies to the family” of Reeva Steenkamp, who died at his home at age 30. Though authorities initially believed that Oscar Pistorius may have mistaken his girlfriend for an intruder, they have since downplayed that possibility. “There is no other suspect involved,” police spokeswoman Brigadier Denise Beukes told the AP, noting that several witnesses are being interviewed. Oscar Pistorius was charged with murder early Thursday. The 26-year-old athlete, a double amputee, became the first Paralymic star to run with able-bodied athletes in an Olympic games last summer in London. Reeva Steenkamp, a model and advocate for women, appeared to be in good spirits before her tragic death, tweeting about Valentine’s Day just hours earlier. “It should be a day of love for everyone,” the model wrote. Police found Steenkamp’s body in a pool of blood in Pistorius’ home in Pretoria on Valentine’s Day. She was reportedly shot four times by Pistorius. Oscar Pistorius News Report

LISTEN: Adele’s 007 Theme Song ‘Skyfall’ Debuts

“This is the end/hold your breath and count to ten…” Adele ‘s moody retro James Bond theme song has hit the web in full! How does it measure up to its predecessors? (Best theme in many Bonds, no?) Listen to the U.K. crooner sing “Skyfall” and chime in with your thoughts after the jump. I can’t quite tell how the lyrics have anything to do with the plot of Skyfall , but it’s a nice return to form. Adele’s certainly one of the strongest Bond theme singers in 007 history. Where does “Skyfall” rank among the best and worst Bond songs of all time ? [via the official 007 Twitter ]

Bret Easton Ellis on Paris Hilton Gay Comments: I Kind of Agree!

Ho-tel heiress Paris Hilton has taken flak from plenty of people over her recent comments on horny, disgusting gay men who probably have AIDS and are totally gross. Bret Easton Ellis is not one of those people. Ellis, who recently referred to Glee as a puddle of HIV and said Matt Bomer shouldn’t star in the 50 Shades of Grey movie because he’s gay, is weighing in on Paris’ off-color remarks. “I kind of agree with Paris Hilton,” the American Psycho author. He also name-checked Grindr, the online hookup site that figured prominently in the hotel heiress’ anti-gay rant – a conversation with a gay male friend recorded secretly by a cab driver. “As someone who has used Grindr , Paris Hilton isn’t that far off,” wrote Ellis. In the wake of the backlash, Hilton issued an apology letter posted on GLAAD’s website, saying, “I am so sorry and so upset that I caused pain to my gay friends, fans and their families.” “Gay people are the strongest and most inspiring people I know.” Her publicist also continued Hilton’s mea culpa tour, telling E! Paris meant “to express that it is dangerous for anyone to have unprotected sex that could lead to a life threatening disease.” While it’s ridiculous that Paris, or anyone, is secretly recorded in a cab … it’s also ridiculous to say this in just about any context. Take another listen below: Paris Hilton Hates Gays

Paris Hilton Apologizes to Gay Community, Praises "Strongest and Most Inspiring People I Know"

In a letter to GLAAD , Paris Hilton issued a full apology and explanation, praising the gay community as the strongest and most inspiring group she knows.

Aly Raisman Goes For Gold on Floor Exercise: How Did She Do?

Aly Raisman has ceded much of the attention to teammate Gabby Douglas at the London Olympics, but undoubtedly emerged as a star in her own right. The 18-year-old from Massachusetts hoped to secure not one, but two individual medals in the final day of gymnastics. Was she able to achieve that? Find out below … She did! Raisman nailed her floor exercise routine to win the gold medal, scoring a 15.6 and easily topping silver medalist Catalina Ponor of Romania (15.2). Russia’s Aliya Mustafina took the bronze (14.9). Jordyn Wieber was seventh. “It was the best routine I’ve ever done,” Raisman said afterward. “My coach [Mihai Brestyan] said it was the best routine he’d ever seen me do.” The floor exercise is her strongest event. Less expected was Aly Raisman’s bronze medal not much more than an hour earlier in the balance beam. She initially finished fourth, but took the bronze after winning an appeal with the judges and then a tiebreaker with Ponor. Congratulations, Aly!!

Jesus Take The Wheel: 6.0 Magnitude Earthquake Hits Northern Italy, At Least 4 Dead

6.0 Magnitude Earthquake Hits Northern Italy A strong earthquake rocked a large swathe of northern Italy early on Sunday, killing at least four people, injuring dozens and seriously damaging historic buildings such as churches, bell towers and a medieval castle. The 6.0-magnitude quake was centered 22 miles north-northwest of Bologna in northern Italy at a relatively shallow depth of 6.3 miles, according to the U.S. Geological Survey website. It struck at about 4 a.m. local time and was followed about an hour later by one of 5.1 magnitude thet causded more damage and more buildings to collapse, officials and witnesses said. “I ran out in my underwear,” one man told Italian television. The epicenter of the quake, the strongest to hit Italy in three years, was in the plains near Modena in the Emilia-Romagna region of the Po river valley, and the tremor was felt as far west as Liguria, bordering France, and the Friuli region bordering Slovenia. There was serious damage to historic buildings and churches in the provinces of Modena and Ferrara, and the quake also shook major towns such as Bologna, Rovigo, Verona and Mantua. A series of strong aftershocks hit the area, the strongest measuring 5.1, and local mayors ordered residents to stay in the open. The last major quake to hit Italy was a 6.3 magnitude quake in the central city of L’Aquila in 2009, which killed nearly 300 people. After that quake, then Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi moved a G8 meeting that was to have been held in Sardinia to near L’Aquila in a show of solidarity with the victims. Source

Mitt Romney Edges Ron Paul to Win Maine Caucuses

Mitt Romney eked out a narrow win in Maine’s Republican caucuses, state party officials announced Saturday, beating Ron Paul by approximately three percent. The victory, however slim, offers the candidate a boost after three straight losses to Rick Santorum last week. How far it will carry him remains to be seen. The former Massachusetts governor earned 39 percent of the vote, while Paul took 36 percent, his strongest showing by share of the vote so far in the campaign. Paul also finished second to Romney in neighboring New Hampshire. Santorum got 18 percent of the vote in Maine and former House Speaker Newt Gingrich, who has faded since winning South Carolina, had 6 percent. While the Maine results don’t immediately offer any convention delegates to Romney, they give him renewed momentum – at least according to Romney, who said: “The voters of Maine sent a clear message that it is past time to send an outsider to the White House, a conservative with a lifetime of experience in the private sector, who can uproot a culture of taxing, spending, borrowing and endless bureaucracy.” The Maine results are based on votes cast at 84 percent of municipal caucuses that have been conducted to date; the rest will be held by March 20. The state’s delegates to the Republican convention will be allocated in May. Because the results aren’t officially complete, Paul did not concede defeat. “It’s almost like we could call it a tie,” he told supporters .
