Louis Farrakhan Speaks At UC Berkeley, Sparks Controversy

UC Berkeley on Saturday was once again the crucible of the free speech debate. The birthplace of the Free Speech Movement in the 1960s hosted another iconoclast from the era, Nation of Islam leader Louis Farrakhan, whose speeches and writings have been denounced by critics for decades as bigoted, homophobic and anti-Semitic. Farrakhan was invited as a speaker for the ninth annual Afrikan Black Coalition Conference organized by the Black Student Union, and his appearance was denounced by other student groups and the subject of an online petition “opposing his hateful words and character” that garnered about 350 signatories. At least two opinion pieces authored by student leaders denouncing Farrakhan’s appearance were published in the campus newspaper, the Daily Californian, including one by Shawn Lewis, president of the Berkeley College Republicans, who wondered where was Chancellor Robert Birgeneau’s condemnation of Farrakhan after the chancellor and others were quick to denounce as racist the college Republicans “Increase Diversity Bake Sale” last September to protest affirmative action-type policies. Even UC President Mark Yudof weighed in on the Farrakhan appearance, writing in an open letter that “we cannot as a society allow what we regard as vile speech to lead us to abandon the cherished value of free speech.” But that only required that people “condemn these merchants of hatred when they come into our community,” Yudof wrote. There were no protesters outside Wheeler Auditorium before Farrakhan’s speech, and only one after. That was Noah Ickowitz, a student senator who said Farrakhan had every right to appear on campus, and Ickowitz had every right to protest a speech he said advocated black empowerment at the expense of other groups. The Nation of Islam leader seemed to relish the controversy, telling the young crowd in the nearly full 700-seat auditorium that opposition to him addressing them was simply a sign of decades of slave-master mentality by white America. “To those who dare, who arrogantly thought that they could frighten this generation as they used to frighten our parents … so I ask you, ‘What are you afraid of?’ ” Farrakhan said. “What is it I might say to your students, or your slaves?” It was a theme he returned to on several occasions in a wandering speech that lasted about two hours and ran from foreign policy to the failings of an education system he said was designed to prevent young African Americans from becoming a threat to white dominance. Sadalia King, a 23-year-old UC Davis student, said she had come to hear the 78-year-old Farrakhan to witness someone she has studied. “Knowing he’s a controversial figure, I knew he was going to say something,” said King, adding that she sympathized with those who opposed his appearance. “I think there’s a generation gap … Just like your grandparents. You know they might say something a little crazy, but you’re still going to love and respect and appreciate them.” Source More On Bossip! Super Tuesday: Early On, It’s Slow Going At the Polls

Young voters slowly trickle into polling stations in Boston, Columbus and Atlanta on Tuesday morning. By Andrew Jenks, Jacob Soboroff and Becca Frucht Outside of a Georgia Tech polling station on Super Tuesday Photo: Rya Backer/MTV News BOSTON — It’s cold. It’s early. And almost nobody is voting yet on the day that every pundit is saying could finally shake up this year’s Republican presidential race.
Polls opened here at 7 a.m. for Super Tuesday
voting and if the initial trickle at the Harbor Point Technology Center — the closest polling place to UMass Boston — is any indication, turnout ain’t looking good in the home state of GOP presidential front runner Mitt Romney. Boston’s NPR station, WBUR, reported this morning that only 300,000 voters are expected to show up today, 200,000 fewer than in the 2008 presidential primary, when both parties were engaged in vigorous races. To put things in perspective: almost one million young voters are eligible to vote in Massachusetts today. In the spacious first floor student lounge here, flags of the world’s countries hung over the room as 18-year-old Amanda Carey admitted she hadn’t voted yet but she would do so for the first time ever after school in a bid to support fiery Congressman Ron Paul. But by 8:30 a.m. only one voter, a 24-year-old Northeastern graduate named Ashley, had shown up to vote. She identified herself as a Libertarian and said she was voting to get President Obama out of office because, “I don’t believe he’s delivered on any promises he made in 2008.” Down the road at UMass Boston, students were trickling into the Campus Center. There wasn’t a polling place there, but there was a cafeteria. And for now that was a way bigger draw this morning. ( Jacob Soboroff ) ATLANTA — We’re at Georgia Tech and the Student Center polling station in the heart of campus is open! But so is the Chick-Fil-A right next door — and so far, it looks like more people are interested in biscuits than ballots. Maybe they’re just powering up for the big day? Michael, a grad student in electrical engineering, was definitely down to exercise his democratic duty. He’s also really passionate about Paul and credits the Libertarian Congressman from Texas with inspiring him to learn more about the economy. Michael believes former President Bush and now President Obama have “crashed the system” and the only one talking about the big changes we need to make as a country is the GOP’s oldest candidate. “It felt good,” he said about voting for a candidate he was passionate about. “I wouldn’t have come out today if Ron Paul wasn’t a candidate.” Some early birds were planning to read up and get their vote on in the November general election, but Mark Teal, a senior in civil engineering, is sitting Tuesday’s vote out because he’s a Democrat, even though he could still cast a ballot in the open primary. He predicts whoever wins the Republican nomination may give Obama a good fight, but is confident the current president will see another term. Brent and Chase, two seniors majoring in electrical engineering, weren’t eligible to vote because they didn’t get absentee ballots in time, but they’re on the Newt Gingrich
train and are confident the former House Speaker will win in his home state. Finally, I chatted with Mehran, a 22-year-old Industrial Engineering major, who says it just too early for him to get involved — and he wasn’t even aware that it was Super Tuesday, or that the Republicans were duking it out to take on Obama. ( Becca Frucht ) COLUMBUS — It’s 6:30 a.m. and I am walking around The Ohio State University campus trying to find the polling site. I ask five to six students and nobody knows where it is. I finally find an information booth and they laugh and tell me I have actually been on site the entire time and the station is just 20 yards away. The polling site, in the student union in the center of campus, is pretty quiet around 7:30 a.m., when I was expecting a morning rush as students cast their ballots on their way to the day’s first class. Plenty of young people are going to class/work, but all zoom right past the polling site. Not even a glance. I didn’t see one person under the age of 30 exercise their power to vote in the 90 minutes I hung around in the cold dawn. Finally, I found Andrei Rhakovic, 25, who was in a hurry, but stopped for a minute to speak his mind. “It’s just bulls— overall,” he said. “I voted for Obama four years ago … but these past four years have really shown how f—ed and corrupt the system still is.” If anyone could get us out of this jam he describes, he thinks it’s Paul, but, well, let’s just say Rhakovic doesn’t trust his judgment either. Oftentimes when I speak with young voters it feels like they’ve experienced a “bad breakup” with government and politicians and this year’s election. But for Andrei, he is feeling much more than that. This is a bad — real bad – divorce. When I ask what it would take for him to re-engage all he can say is, “I don’t know. That’s a good question.” It’s the first time he was speechless. ( Andrew Jenks ) MTV has Super Tuesday covered, with reporters on the scene in Georgia, Ohio and Massachusetts! Obama Supporters Tuning Out Iowa Caucus Noise

‘It’s all negative ads so far: They’re bashing each other; they’re bashing the president,’ Obama re-election volunteer tells MTV News. By Gil Kaufman President Obama greeting supporters Photo: John Moore/ Getty Images DES MOINES, Iowa — Anywhere you went in Iowa over the past few weeks, the talk was likely to be focused on Tuesday night’s (January 3) Iowa caucus . But, because President Obama is an incumbent facing no Democratic challenger, the nation’s attention has been on the in-fighting among the Republican candidates vying for their party’s nomination. Obama was not far from their lips, though, as a landslide of attack ads on the airwaves here hammered the president on his policies, while questioning his dedication to the American ideal and just about anything else that would inspire Republican voters to come out and help decide the first-in-the-nation primary event. That’s why it’s somewhat surprising that in a law office on the outskirts of town, the room was buzzing with activity Tuesday as Obama supporters worked the phones to get their party faithful out to caucus. “Today, we are trying to get people out there to the caucuses and let them know that there is a caucus,” said Kameron Middlebrooks, 23, a student at Grand View University in Des Moines and neighborhood team leader for the Obama re-election campaign. He’s been in the state since April working with Obama’s Organize for America team, getting out the word about the caucus, training more than 12,000 volunteers and setting up more than 4,000 one-on-one meetings with voters. As for what issues are important this time around, Middlebrooks said Obama has already been focusing on what matters to him: overhauling the student loan system and creating more Pell grants. In an attempt to expand his voter base in the state, Obama — who easily won the Iowa contest in 2009 over Hillary Rodham Clinton — will address his Iowa supporters via a live Internet video feed as they gather to caucus Tuesday night. And while his staffers have made 350,000 phone calls to supporters so far, it’s been rough sledding for the Democratic faithful here in the Hawkeye State lately, as the air and newspaper boxes have been filled with a tidal wave of negative attacks on his first term in office. “Honestly, to me, it’s like watching a reality TV show,” Middlebrooks said of all the anti-Obama spots. “It’s all negative ads so far: They’re bashing each other; they’re bashing the president. It really makes my job easier when I go out and talk to caucus-goers or potential voters because I can explain to them that instead of all these grand ideas but no real solutions, we can really talk about the solutions and what President Obama has done and what he can continue to do if we give him another four years.” Overall, though, Middlebrooks said the reaction from voters he’s talked to has been good so far, and he’s confident Obama can win the state again. For Your Information: 7 Of The Worst Paying Jobs That STILL Require A College Degree

With the economy as bad as it is, even having a college degree isn’t enough to get by… College graduates with student loans owed an average of $25,250 in 2010, an all-time high and a 5 percent increase, according to a recent report. What makes matters worse is that students graduating in 2010 faced unemployment of 9.1 percent, the highest annual rate on record, according to the Project on Student Debt’s report. Given the grim figures facing college graduates, 24/7 Wall St. reviewed wage data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics to identify the seven occupations that require at least a college degree and pay the least. Jobs that pay poorly and require a college degree or higher have at least one thing in common: the wrong industry. Some industries, including those in mental health, academic research, the arts and publishing tend to pay poorly. The entry level jobs in these fields and on this list do not pay well. Reporters starting out make less than $20,000 per year. Many of the people employed in the jobs on our list will have a hard time paying off their student loans. The occupations on the list earn less than $40,000 annually. In every case, jobs paid far less to start. A quarter of the people employed as survey researchers, for example, earn less than $24,000 annually. 24/7 Wall St. examined wage data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics’ Occupational Employment Statistics Database, to identify the major occupations that make less than $40,000 annually. BLS’s Occupational Outlook Handbook was used to identify educational requirements and long-term job prospects. O*Net Online, an independent career research and advisory site, was used to determine the percentage of people in each occupation with a bachelor’s, master’s, or PhD. The seven occupations on our list required a bachelor’s degree or more from most employers. Our best suggestion for those going about to go to college would be to pick a major that you’re passionate about with the understanding that it may be tough for a few years while you attempt to move up past entry level. For those who are about to graduate college, you may want to think about grad school and additional forms of education…just a thought. Source Flip the script to see the list…

Slumlord Millionaire: Illuminati Hov And His Cronies Accused Of Using All Kinds Of Shady Scare Tactics To Get His Philly Tenants Out Of Their Homes

As if it wasn’t bad enough that he bought a building of condos, Hov just had to go and p*** off his mostly White tenants, didn’t he? How do we know they’re predominantly White? They took their griping and rabble-rousing to the good folks at Faux News. And they, of course, went in with their “savvy and balanced reporting”. Current and former residents at a luxury building in Philadelphia partly owned by hip-hop star Jay-Z say the music mogul’s legal team has been relentlessly harassing them to leave until they give up and vacate the premises, FoxNews.com has learned. “I’m scared of Jay-Z,” says a tenant of 603 North American Street, who because of what she claims are safety fears does not want to be named. “I’ve endured endless harassment from his team of lawyers, and I can’t take it anymore. I don’t know when this drama is going to end.” The 24-unit condominium complex was purchased by SCC North American Realty, LLC, in January of 2009. According to the Philadelphia Inquirer, SCC North American Realty, LLC, is partially owned by Shawn Carter, otherwise known as Jay-Z. “The whole thing has been so unsettling,” former tenant Liza Tedeschi tells FoxNews.com exclusively. “I’ve been in tears over this.” Tedeschi claims Jay-Z’s legal team has been trying to evict tenants at his four-year-old building.
