‘He was really good in the studio,’ producer Rodney Jerkins recalls of recording ‘What Are Words.’ By Kara Warner, with additional reporting by Jim Cantiello Chris Medina Photo: MTV News While Chris Medina’s exit from “American Idol” is still a shock to many fans, the fact that the early favorite has already lined up his first post-“Idol” project (by way of super-producer Rodney Jerkins and the single “What Are Words”) should alleviate the burn. MTV News was lucky enough to catch up with both Medina and Jerkins recently to get the inside scoop on the heartfelt track. “I always knew who Rodney Jerkins was, but after doing some research, I didn’t realize how ‘the man’ he actually was,” Medina explained of his reaction to getting a phone call two days after his unexpected elimination. “I got a call on Friday and then that Monday I recorded,” he said. “It was surreal. It was great.” Medina went on to say that while the song isn’t technically his style, it’s not entirely out of his “wheelhouse.” “The words totally embody what my situation is,” he said. “It’s heartfelt, it’s real, and it was an honor to be asked to put my voice to this wonderful material.” For his part, Jerkins, who was inspired to write the song after seeing Medina’s first audition, said the 26-year-old was a total pro during their recording session. “He was really good in the studio,” Jerkins said. “That’s always the fearful moment for myself as a producer. The first time you work with a new artist [you wonder], ‘What is it going to sound like when you get in the studio?’ “[Medina] came in here and he listened to it one time down and then he was like, ‘I think I got it.’ He started singing it for us in the room, and we were just floored,” Jerkins recalled. “Like, ‘Wow,’ he learned it that fast. I’m like, ‘OK, it’s time for you to get in the booth.’ He was great.” Regarding the higher vocals Medina uses in the track, Jerkins said that is all about his technique of challenging his artists. “A lot of technology has made it where we don’t push the artist like we used to,” he said. “I’m a ’90s guy. I come from the school of the ’90s, where you didn’t have Auto-Tune, we didn’t have the tricks of technology. ‘I Need a Doctor’ singer’s project will be first release on producer’s new label, he tells ‘RapFix Live.’ By Jayson Rodriguez, with reporting by Sway Calloway Alex Da Kid in a Skpe interview Thursday Photo: MTV News Alex Da Kid and Skylar Grey have a proven track record, from their work together on Eminem’s chart-topper “Love the Way You Lie” and current hits “Words I Never Said” by Lupe Fiasco and “I Need a Doctor” by Dr. Dre. Now the duo — he, a producer and she, a songwriter — are teaming up to work on Grey’s debut album. The still-untitled project will be the first release on the British import’s new label. “I’m working on Skylar’s project, and I’m really excited about that,” he said during Thursday’s (February 24) Dr. Dre edition of “RapFix Live.” “She’s the first artist signed to my label. I’m just wrapping up my label situation right now, and that’s my main focus.” Alex Da Kid also has credits working with B.o.B and Paramore (“Airplanes”), Nicki Minaj (“Massive Attack”) and T.I. (“Castle Walls”); Grey penned the chorus for each track. “It’s just a creative experience being in the studio with different people,” Grey said of the pair’s work . “I’m not from the hip-hop world, but I think that’s what works for the sound that we got: the combination of the alternative chorus mixed with the hip-hop verses.” Although he has hopes to work across various genres and has been in the studio with artists as varied as Rob Thomas and Rihanna, ADK said he wants to make sure he doesn’t spread himself too thin. “I definitely want to take one thing at a time,” he said. “I don’t want to overload and work with everyone and dilute my sound. It appears this new trailer is not in fact from the studio or producers and, according to the stars, completely misrepresents the movie. On the bright side, at least people are talking about the flick that premiered over a year ago.

However, her latest video, “Moment 4 Life,” may surprise some of her die-hard fans, as Minaj swaps her edgy costumes for graceful, ladylike looks and runs off with her Prince Charming — in this case, it’s Young Money bestie Drake — and gets married under a firework display. Shortly after the premiere of the video on MTV on Thursday evening, Minaj sat down with MTV News’ Sway and explained the development of the fairytale narrative and said that catching her fans off guard is just what she was looking for. “I definitely went back and forth with [director] Chris [Robinson] a lot. I just wanted it to be something a little bit unexpected,” she said. Minaj added she initially had a more bottle-poppin’ vibe in mind, which was eventually replaced by the romantic story line. “First I wanted it to be like, really just a celebration and a party,” she admitted. “But I had the idea of making it more of a romance. Chris just sort of took those little bits and pieces and ran with it, and then it became sort of this big Cinderella thing.” The concept of the video may have evolved over time, but Minaj said that her first choice to jump on the track was always Drizzy, who provided her with the instrumental. “Drake came to the studio one night and he brought me a whole bunch of beats when I was wrapping up the [ Pink Friday ] album. This ‘Moment 4 Life’ was one of the beats, and he was like, ‘Just do whatever. Whatever you pick, I’m just gonna rock with you.’ I had the beat for a while, maybe, like, over a month, and I was just sitting on it — pause — and next thing you know, I was shooting [the video for] ‘Right Thru Me’ and I played this beat for everybody in my dressing room, and I was like, ‘Do you like this beat?’ Everybody said, ‘Yeah.’ And I just went to the studio the next day, and I laid the hook and I sent it to Drake and I didn’t know if he was gonna like it, blah blah blah, and he was like, ‘I love it.’ ” Drizzy mused that their parallel journeys as budding hip-pop superstars made the inspirational track a perfect fit. “He was like, ‘It makes sense for me and you.’ We both are at a place right now that we feel like we wish we could have this moment for life,” she recalled. “We don’t know what’s gonna happen next year, but this moment feels amazing. Cam’ron said Santana had a “skin issue” that kept him from the Dipset-themed “RapFix Live,” however, it was later revealed Santana was dealing with a legal ordeal: An affiliate of his was arrested at the rapper’s New Jersey studio. In an interview with Chicago’s Power 92 , the MC apologized for his absence and briefly spoke about the incident. “It’s been some legal issue, I know it’s been all over the Internet,” Santana told the Hot Boyz radio hosts. “Police ran up in my studio. I had to deal with that and a couple things. “They always picking on me — that’s the best way I can put it,” he continued. “But by the graces of God, everything should be OK. I wasn’t caught with anything in my possession.” Skull Gang MC Hynief (born Toby M. Raynor) was arrested, with police saying he was in possession of firearms and marijuana. “Two fully loaded 9mm caliber handguns were found in the recording studio along with several boxes of ammunition. Additionally, seventeen (17) small clear zip-lock bags each containing a greenish brown vegetation, consistent with the appearance of Marijuana, and drug paraphernalia were seized,” a spokesperson for the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office said in a statement. Producer RedOne recently chatted with MTV News about their latest collaboration, saying it shows the next step in the evolution of the girl formerly known as Stefani Germanotta. “She’s growing all the time, from the day I met her,” RedOne said. “Of course, she’s an encyclopedia of music. She listened to all the Bruce Springsteens, all the legends, and she has music in her. But on her personal level, she’s always growing and growing and growing and becoming bigger and bigger, and her vision’s the same thing. She just needed this platform to put all her ideas and learning from what she’s been doing [into one place], and she’s doing her thing.” With work on the album close to complete, this is a very exciting time for Gaga and him. “It feels exciting. It feels very exciting,” he said with a smile on his face. “It’s really exciting, and I hope the world is going to enjoy this as much as we do.” RedOne also dished about the album’s forthcoming single . “It’s so beautiful, and Gaga is very special to all of us — to the world,” he said. “Honestly, the only thing we do is we get into the studio and suddenly magic happens. We never overthink, or we just do what we do. That’s how it all started. With ‘Just Dance,’ we did it in one hour. There was no overthinking. Even though I remember when we did ‘Poker Face,’ people said musically it brought something new to the music and you won’t be able to top it, we went into the studio and we did ‘Bad Romance’ on a bus. “That explains how we do it, so I can’t tell you anything about what’s coming, but that’s what we do.
