Women drivers make men nervous – survey

ONE in three men feels unsafe when in a car with his wife or girlfriend behind the wheel, results of a British survey have revealed. The study – conducted by British online research company OnePoll.com – surveyed 3000 men, asking them for their attitudes about women's behavior behind the wheel. It found that men often pushed their feet down involuntarily when their wife or partner was late to hit the brakes. Other men regularly spent part of a journey gripping the edges of the passenger seat. A spokesman for OnePoll.com said the study showed that most men felt they were better drivers than the women in their lives. ''They believe they concentrate a lot better, read road situations more quickly and clearly and have better reactions,” he said. ''One in five even went as far as to say they were never able to relax when their other half is driving.'' The study also found one in five couples have argued due to the other one's driving. One in 10 men felt it necessary to ask their wife to pull over so they could take the wheel. Vaccine patch may replace needles

Hate needles? Well here is some good news, after it is reported scientists at Emory University have developed a vaccination patch. Unlike the processes of using one needle the patch is covered in microscopic needles, which dissolve into the skin and vaccinate the patient against flu. The scientists claim the test performed on mice show the patch method is better at protecting the immune system against flu than the current system does. The study into the technology is continuing, but with this break through some are saying the patch will mean people can vaccinate themselves from home via a home delivery. Human trails are set to carry out over the next few years. “If proven to be effective in further trials, the patch would mean an end to the need for medical training to deliver vaccines and turn vaccination into a painless procedure that people could do themselves. It could also simplify large-scale vaccination during a pandemic, the researchers said. Although the study only looked at flu vaccine, it is hoped the technology could be useful for other immunisations and would not cost any more than using a needle.”-BBC added by: Mcellie

Longevity Genes Predict Whether You’ll Live Past 100

“Using a specific set of genetic markers, scientists predicted with 77-percent accuracy whether someone would live to a very old age. The findings do not mean that lifestyle factors, such as healthy diet and exercise, are not important for long life. Indeed, 23 percent of the time the genetic markers didn't predict longevity. So those long-lifers without the centenarian genes might have practiced healthy habits that allowed them to lead a longer life. But they do suggest our genes play an important role when it comes to living well past the average lifespan. With more research, one day people might be able to determine whether they have the genetic potential to become a centenarian. Brown Rice Instead of White Rice May Lower Diabetes Risk

(Health.com) — The next time you order Chinese food or need a side dish to serve with dinner, you're better off choosing brown rice instead of white. Eating more brown rice and cutting back on white rice may reduce your risk of diabetes, a new study reports. “People at risk of diabetes should pay attention to carbohydrates in their diet and replace refined carbohydrates with whole grains,” says the lead author of the study, Dr. Qi Sun, M.D., a nutrition researcher at the Harvard School of Public Health, in Boston, Massachusetts. If you eat a little more than two servings of white rice (about 12 ounces) per week, switching to brown rice will lower your risk of developing type 2 diabetes by 16 percent, Sun and his colleagues estimate. And if you replace those servings of white rice with whole grains in general, they estimate, your diabetes risk will decline even further, by 36 percent. White rice is produced by removing the husk-like outer layers of brown rice. Those discarded layers contain nutrients (such as magnesium and insoluble fiber) that have been shown to guard against diabetes, which may in part explain the study's findings, Sun says. White rice may also contribute to diabetes risk because it causes blood-sugar levels to rise more rapidly than brown rice does. (This is known as having a higher glycemic index.) Type 2 diabetes occurs when your body loses its sensitivity to insulin, a hormone that helps convert blood sugar (glucose) into energy. The result is that blood sugar, which is toxic at high levels, can creep into the danger zone. Eating lots of foods with a high glycemic index– such as refined carbohydrates– has been linked to diabetes risk in the past. “White rice is digested much faster and converted into sugar in your blood much quicker, so your body puts out a lot more insulin in response to white rice,” says Alissa Rumsey, R.D., a nutritionist at New York-Presbyterian Hospital, in New York City. “Whole grains like brown rice are broken down into glucose a lot slower.” In the study, which is published in the Archives of Internal Medicine, Sun and his colleagues analyzed survey data from nearly 200,000 nurses and health professionals who participated in three long-running studies. Roughly 5 percent of the participants were diagnosed with type 2 diabetes during the studies, which lasted from 14 to 22 years. People who ate five servings or more of white rice per week had a 17 increased risk of developing diabetes compared to those who ate little or no white rice, the researchers found. On the other hand, people who ate at least two servings of brown rice had an 11 lower risk of diabetes compared with those who ate barely any brown rice. Although the researchers controlled for a number of diet and lifestyle factors (such as red meat intake, smoking, and physical activity), it's possible that the findings partly reflect the type of people who tend to prefer white versus brown rice. For instance, the researchers note that brown rice intake was associated with “a more health-conscious lifestyle” and diet. People who ate the most brown rice tended to be more physically active, were slimmer, and ate more whole grains, while they were less likely to smoke or have a family history of diabetes. Indeed, though brown rice is more nutritious than white rice, the study doesn't necessarily prove that white rice will contribute to diabetes, says Dr. Loren Wissner Greene, M.D., a clinical associate professor of medicine at New York University's Langone Medical Center, in New York City. “More brown rice is helpful because it is higher in fiber and that may protect against diabetes, but white rice may not increase the risk,” Greene says. At least half of your daily grain intake should be whole grains, Rumsey says. “Look for brown foods such as whole-wheat bread, whole-wheat wraps, or whole-grain or blended pastas,” she suggests. “There are a lot of whole grains– such as barley, bulgur, oatmeal, and quinoa– that are easy to cook with.” Check ingredients and nutrition labels when food shopping, Rumsey says. The Pentagon’s Spare Parts Problem

As budget hawks continue their attack on spending cuts around the country, it might be useful to look at the Pentagon after a new report released Thursday claimed that at least $7 billion in taxpayer funds are being wasted in purchasing of spare parts that the Defense Department ends up not needing. The Pentagon enjoys a $663.8 billion budget for 2010, the largest in the world. —JCL Reuters: A Pentagon agency buys over $7 billion worth of spare parts every year the Defense Department ends up not needing, a practice one senator decried as an “unbelievable” waste of taxpayer money. The Government Accountability Office (GAO) found in a new report released on Thursday that the Defense Logistics Agency had no use for parts worth $7.1 billion, more than half of the $13.7 billion in equipment stacked in Defense Department warehouses on average from 2006 to 2008. “The waste of taxpayer dollars is unbelievable,” said Senator Bernie Sanders, a Vermont Independent and Senate Budget Committee member who requested the study. Toys, food, packaging. Chemicals are in them all. The media make a living by sensationalizing the potential dangers of just about everything in our modern world. Bisphenol-A (BPA), a chemical found in many plastic items, was no exception . The news media have been scaremongering about BPA for years, even going so far as to compare it to tobacco at one point, but a cautious tone from the government and left-wing junk science prompted recent hyperbole from reporters. Reuters warned of a ” potential carcinogen in my soup ,” June 9. News website Newser.com took the fear-mongering a step further calling BPA ” a known carcinogen ” in a May 19 story about the “dangerously high” levels of BPA in canned food and drink. But according to the American Chemistry Council, a trade group representing the chemical industry, BPA is not a known carcinogen. Its website says “based on sound, robust scientific evidence, some government bodies around the world have concluded that BPA is not carcinogenic in humans .” The Food and Drug Administration’s (FDA) latest report on BPA, a chemical used to harden plastic and a primary ingredient in the plastic resin that protects the flavor of food in metal cans, said that studies “have thus far supported the safety of current low levels of human exposure to BPA.” New results from the National Toxicology Program caused FDA to request more research about the effects of BPA and recommended “reasonable steps” to “reduce” exposure, particularly in infants and children. FDA made it clear that BPA has not yet been proven harmful to humans at current levels. Scientific evidence hasn’t prevented the news networks from trying to scare the public away from BPA. In an interview on the Feb. 25 CBS “Early Show,” food critic Katie Lee told co-anchor Harry Smith to avoid plastic containers for leftover food because they usually contain BPA. “And that’s been shown to cause liver disease, heart failure, all sorts of things,” Lee claimed. Smith chimed in saying, “I think it’s already been banned in Canada.” Smith was wrong about Canada – they didn’t ban the chemical outright, rather they banned the chemical from use in baby bottles. Neither Lee nor Smith consulted any scientists, or mentioned anything about the many studies that have confirmed the safety of BPA. Health News Digest pointed out that more than 5,400 scientific journal articles have been published on the safety of BPA. The FDA has deemed BPA safe for years, only choosing to caution people about “some concern” relating to children and infants in 2010. The FDA made it clear that more research was needed before the agency would decide to regulate the chemical. But that hasn’t stopped the network news media from warning viewers not to use BPA products because they “cause” health problems. Jeff Stier of American Council on Science and Health reacted to the May 2010 canned good study saying, “Of course BPA is ‘linked’ to obesity and cancer, because these people linked it. There’s no causal relationship, but you can say there is a link between anything you want, just based on animal studies.” A Junk Science Study Stirs Up Media against BPA In May 2010, the left-wing, pro-regulatory group U.S. PIRG sent out a press release about the National Workgroup for Safe Markets’ study of canned foods and drinks in which they claimed “alarming levels” of BPA were present in common canned foods. “BPA is a synthetic sex hormone and exposure to low doses has been linked to abnormal behavior, diabetes, heart disease, infertility, developmental and reproductive harm, and obesity, which raises the risk of early puberty, a known risk factor for breast cancer,” the PIRG released claimed. That press release also touted liberal Sen. Dianne Feinstein’s, D- Calif., support for legislation to ban BPA in cans and other food and beverage containers. Feinstein is trying to add an amendment to ban BPA to S. 510, the FDA Food Safety Modernization Act . The media quickly repeated the scary study’s findings that BPA was found in 92 percent of canned goods tested. Reuters hyperbolically headlined its story: “Waiter, there’s a potential carcinogen in my soup.” CBS “Morning News” warned that “A new study finds food and drink from metal cans may be contaminated with a chemical linked to a number of disorders. And some lawmakers want the chemical banned.” While CBS’s Sandra Hughes mentioned that the study was tiny – only 50 cans were tested – she expressed no skepticism about the results on May 19. Her story was also stacked against BPA with two interviewees in favor of avoiding canned foods or banning the chemical, and only a statement from the Chemical Industry Council. On May 18, CNN took the study seriously enough that Elizabeth Cohen impractically advocated that people should “start your own garden” just before saying that the people who wrote the study “think that a lot of BPA can make you infertile.” Robert L. Brent, MD, PhD, D.Sc., and adviser to the American Council on Science and Health condemned the study as a lot of hype designed to frighten the public. Brent said, “The National Workgroup for Safe Markets publication wasn’t intended to educate the public about risks, but to frighten unsophisticated scientists and the public. We should respond to such garbage with good science.” He explained that human exposure to BPA has “been exhaustively studied.” After mentioning different studies that have bee done, Brent said “the important point is that human serum concentrations of BPA are very, very low, far below any expected toxic effects.” “The overwhelming scientific evidence points to the conclusion that at current human exposure levels, BPA is not toxic – and specifically is not linked to the myriad diseases outlined in the National Workgroup for Safe Markets report released earlier this week,” Brent concluded. Coca-Cola also hit back against the study telling Reuters, “A person weighing 135 pounds (61 kg) would need to ingest more than 14,800 12-ounce cans of a beverage in one day to approach the FDA’s acceptable daily limit for BPA consumption.” But Reuters buried Coca-Cola’s statement and other information about the large amounts of BPA that would have to be ingested to be compared to rodent tests, waiting until the 38 th paragraph of its 55 paragraph story to bring it up. BPA Scare: 2008-2010 Journalists have hyped the dangers of BPA for years, despite evidence to the contrary. Back in April 2008, NBC’s “Today” warned about the reproductive dangers of ingesting BPA from reusable plastic water bottles. NBC had already campaigned against ordinary plastic water bottles, arguing that they were bad for the environment. But the miniscule levels of BPA found in reusable water bottles is thousands of times less than what levels linked to rodent health problems, according to Dr. Gilbert Ross of ACSH. But that didn’t stop “Today” from warning against many types of water bottles, including the popular Nalgene brand. “[I]n the meantime, you can always check that number on the bottom [the indicator of what type of plastic used is],” reporter Michelle Kosinski said, “or just go back to old-fashioned glass.” Some reporters have advocated a return to glassware without stating the obvious inconvenience (try biking with a heavy glass water bottle) and danger (glass shatters). In 2009, the crusade against BPA continued. MSNBC’s Dr. Nancy Snyderman, raised concerns about BPA saying “It’s a synthetic estrogen that some scientists believe can be linked to everything from breast cancer to obesity. We associate it with plastic water bottles, but now Consumer Reports says that BPA is even in canned foods.” But even Snyderman had to admit the study was inconclusive and based on “soft science.” Her guest New York Times columnist Nicholas Kristof continued to hype the danger by comparing BPA to tobacco: “To me, it feels a little bit like tobacco in the 1970s when, you know, there is growing evidence and scientists understand the causal pathways and we don’t entirely understand at what dosage and at what stage of life those adverse consequences really build up.”  Like this article?  Sign up  for “The Balance Sheet,” BMI’s weekly e-mail newsletter.
