‘Catfish’ Subject Is A ‘Bit More Wary’ When It Comes To The Web

Nev Schulman now understands where taking risks ‘can lead when it comes to the Internet.’ By Kara Warner Nev Schulman Photo: MTV News The much-buzzed-about little indie that could, “Catfish,” is finally in theaters. Despite the unusual approach Universal took with the marketing campaign — i.e., setting up the Sundance darling as a genre or horror-like film — it is a must-see movie with a very timely and unique message. The heavily hyped documentary revolves around NYC-based photographer Nev Schulman and a series of curious events that occur when he begins an online friendship with an 8-year-old girl and a romantic relationship with her older sister. When MTV News caught up with the filmmakers, Henry Joost and Ariel Schulman, they addressed the persistent “is it real?” debate . A few weeks later, we had the opportunity to sit down with all three of the “Catfish” guys: the filmmakers and the movie’s star/subject, Nev Schulman. Because the film exposes a very real and, at times, emotional real-life experience related to the realm of online relationships and social networking, we asked Nev if he has since changed his virtual presence or approach (without revealing any spoilers, of course). “Through all of this, basically, I’m trying to stay true to my regular behavior,” Schulman said. “I like to take risks, putting myself out there, saying yes to things. I have certainly a new appreciation for where that can lead when it comes to the Internet,” he explained. “So when it comes to meeting new people online, I’m definitely a little bit more wary now as far as getting to know them too personally before I actually meet with them in person, but as far as using the Internet and Facebook and Twitter and YouTube and having accounts on all these social-networking websites, I think it’s great. I think that there’s a lot of good that can come from it.” Nev Schulman added that until you really know someone, it’s best to err on the private side of things. At least in the beginning of a virtual relationship — no matter if it’s platonic or romantic. “Basically, what it comes down to is, keep it private, because you can always share with people once you’re ready to, but there’s no reason to willy-nilly share everything about yourself with anybody.” For breaking news, celebrity columns, humor and more — updated around the clock — visit MTVMoviesBlog.com .

Movieline Interview Flashback: Director Amir Bar-Lev On What You See (and What You Don’t) In The Tillman Story

Back at Sundance, I talked to director Amir Bar-Lev about his powerful documentary The Tillman Story, and now that the film is coming out in limited release, Movieline is republishing that very candid interview. Of particular note in this conversation? Bar-Lev’s excoriation of General Stanley McChrystal (a key figure involved with the Pat Tillman cover-up), who’s since been let go by President Obama following McChrystal’s unflattering comments about the administration in Rolling Stone.

Here’s the Movie that Beat Ridley Scott and Kevin Macdonald to Their ‘Historic’ User-Generated Doc

So everyone’s gotten over yesterday’s Inception hype and has apparently moved on to something smaller called Life in a Day — a collaboration between directors Ridley Scott and Kevin Macdonald that will comprise a bundle of user-generated clips shot and uploaded to YouTube on July 24. The finished product will premiere next January at the Sundance Film Festival. Today’s PR blitz calls Life the “first user-generated feature-length documentary film shot on a single day” and a “historic global film experiment.” Which wouldn’t be so off-base — if it were true.

Media Praises ‘8: The Mormon Proposition,’ But Admit Film is One-Sided

“ 8: The Mormon Proposition ,” is a documentary detailing the large role the Mormon Church played in passing California’s Proposition 8 in 2008.That ballot initiative added an amendment to the state constitution defining marriage as exclusively between a man and a woman. While the media has naturally been praising the documentary, the movie is so biased that even some reviewers couldn’t avoid pointing out how one-sided it is. Directed by Reed Cowan, the film first premiered at the Sundance Film Festival. “8: The Mormon Proposition” is narrated by Lance Dustin, who was the screenwriter for “ Milk ,” the movie about California’s first openly gay elected official. The trailer features protestors, people upset about the passage of Proposition 8, and paints the Mormon Church negatively for influencing the outcome of Proposition 8. Cowan has not attempted to hide his bias in the documentary. He stated, “The separation of church and state in the USA is a sacred value. It’s what keeps us from being a theocracy. We are a democracy and should forever stay that way. ‘8: The Mormon Proposition’ is a crucial piece of documentary film making because it puts on record what I believe to be the greatest encroachment into matters of state by a church in American history.” Mormon Church spokesperson Kim Farah told the Washington Post in January that although she has not seen the film, “judging from the trailer and background material online, it appears that accuracy and truth are rare commodities in this film. Although we have given many interviews on this topic, we had no desire to participate in something so obviously biased.” Farah is not the only one who has noticed the film’s obvious bias. In a June 18 article, The Boston Globe’s Mark Feeney labeled the film as “numbingly partisan.” He explained that while over 30 people were interviewed in the documentary, only two are against same-sex marriage and he called one of them “a bombs-away bozo.” But Feeney made sure readers knew he was no apostate from the gay agenda, explaining, “It’s so one-sided you hardly care after a while that the side it’s on is so clearly the right one.” The Chicago Tribune also noticed how one-sided the documentary was. Author Michael Phillips stated the film, “emanates empathy for gay and lesbians who are also Mormons, or were, or are related to them, and whose relationship has been thwarted by the preachments and political influence of the Latter-Day Saints.” Some reviewers didn’t feel the need to mention the film’s propagandist bent. In a June 18 New York Times’ review, author Stephen Holden praised the documentary as being “highly emotional.” He detailed how the, “movie shows the depth of religion-based loathing of homosexuality, like that of abortion, to be primal. In the meantime the struggle to repeal Proposition 8 is under way.” Strange, but Holden wasn’t so receptive to another film’s depiction of “religion-based loathing” when he panned “The Stoning of Soraya M.” But then, that movie was critical of Islam, not a dangerous creed like Mormonism. The Los Angeles Times’ review labeled the documentary as being a “straightforward presentation” and “outstanding.” The movie review continued to state how, “The words of the church’s leaders and its activists could scarcely be more homophobic.”

Winter’s Bone Attempts Unlikely ‘Sex Sells’ Gambit

“You Have Now Heard of Jennifer Lawrence” announced the headline in Esquire . My first thoughts were, “Oh, I’ve already heard of Jennifer Lawrence. She’s the Verge alum who delivered a stunning turn in the Sundance drama Winter’s Bone , where she played Ree, a flannel-clad Ozark girl left to fend for her siblings and gut squirrels on camera. How nice of Esquire to give this promising young actress and challenging indie film some attention!” And then, I saw the pictures.

Rumored Couple: Ryan Gosling and Michelle Williams

“You know those cupcakes got all the bomb frosting / I love those cupcakes like McAdams loves Gosling.” – Andy Samberg and Chris Parnell, ” Lazy Sunday ” Aside from ruining the above lyrics forever, this romantic rumor would be awesome: co-stars Ryan Gosling and Michelle Williams are reportedly dating! Their movie Blue Valentine earned great reviews at the Cannes Film Festival – but they pair also have people talking about whether they’re a real couple. In the drama, Williams and Gosling play a couple trying to prevent their marriage from falling apart. But the stars looked anything but troubled Tuesday. Later, just before their big premiere, Williams clasped Gosling’s hand on the red carpet, and the two remained hand-in-hand walking into the screening. So … are these two hotties an item or not? “He is cozy with everyone!” Gosling’s rep says. A source close to the producers, however, says otherwise. “You know actors who meet on movie sets,” he said. It can be the most romantic place in the world.” This isn’t the first time rumors about their relationship have surfaced. At the Sundance Film Festival in January, where Blue Valentine premiered, Gosling, who brought his mom as his date, and Williams showed obvious chemistry at a cast dinner. Ryan previously dated, and exchanged sappy The Notebook quotes with Rachel McAdams. Michelle has a young daughter, Matilda, with the late Heath Ledger. Here’s hoping it’s for real!
