‘Glee’ Star Lea Michele Wants Justin Timberlake Super Bowl Episode

‘If not Justin, I would hope it would be the sequel to the Madonna episode,’ Michele says of possible post-Super Bowl show. By Mawuse Ziegbe Lea Michele Photo: Jon Kopaloff/ Getty Images Back in January, Lea Michele told us she was hoping for a dance-off between Matthew Morrison’s Will Schuester and Justin Timberlake on “Glee.” Well, the show might be getting a little closer to securing JT and/or his music. “I think they are saving Justin Timberlake for the Super Bowl episode,” Michele told The Hollywood Reporter. “They have to be, because he is so perfect for our show. He has to be on it! When I met Jessica Biel, like a loser, I asked her to tell Justin to come on our show. [ Laughs. ] She was a little taken aback and said, ‘Um, OK. I’ll tell him.’ ” Michele said that if “Glee” producers don’t make a JT episode happen, she’s fine with revisiting the hitmaking catalog of his “4 Minutes” collaborator. “If not Justin, I would hope it would be the sequel to the Madonna episode,” she said. “She has so many more amazing songs we didn’t even touch.” When the New Directions crew might tackle Timberlake’s hits is still up in the air, but the cast is buzzing about delving into the hits of his ex, Britney Spears . Michele is slated to revamp Spears’ debut smash ” … Baby One More Time,” and Heather Morris (whose character happens to be named Brittany) has said she wants to switch up “Toxic.” “Circus” and “Stronger” are other jams from the pop princess that might turn up in the episode, but castmember Naya Rivera said homing in on a few Spears songs is a major challenge. “There are so many great Britney songs to choose from; how do you pick just one?” Rivera wondered. Media Ignore Planned Parenthood’s $1.3 Billion Federal Funding Discrepancy

If $1.3 billion is unaccounted for and the media don’t report it, did it really happen? According to an  American Life League review  of Planned Parenthood’s annual reports, the organization received more than $2 billion in federal grants and contracts between 2002 and 2008. A June 16 Government Accountability Report, however, found that the organization spent just $657.1 million of taxpayer money in the same time period. The $1.3 billion discrepancy failed to catch the attention of the nation’s major media outlets. None of the networks (ABC, CBS and NBC) or major newspapers (Los Angeles times, The New York Times, USA Today and The Washington Post) reported it. A Culture and Media Institute review of coverage found that only one newspaper listed among Nexis’ “major newspapers” – The Houston Chronicle – even mentioned the GAO report. The Chronicle’s June 16 article noted that Planned Parenthood spent $657 million of federal money over seven years, but did not mention the income/outlay discrepancy. Don’t Follow the Money The media have made Planned Parenthood a go-to source for several stories over the last six months, including debate over abortion language in health care reform legislation, the trial of the activist who killed abortionist Dr. George Tiller, and the 50 th  anniversary of the Pill. From Dec. 28, 2009, to June 28, 2010, the broadcast networks and the “Big 4” newspapers mentioned Planned Parenthood 56 times in news stories. None of those stories mentioned the GAO report, and only one article reported the amount of federal money going to Planned Parenthood. The February 27 article in The New York Times mentioned an investigative operation by pro-life activist Lila Rose which found Planned Parenthood clinics willing to accept donations from people who wanted African American babies aborted. A separate New York Times report on January 28 characterized the investigation as “prank calls” to Planned Parenthood. Four reports referred to state funding of Planned Parenthood, but did not mention federal resources granted to the organization. Planned Parenthood’s 2008 Annual Report says $349.6 million in taxpayer-funded grants and contracts accounted for more than a third (36 percent) of the organization’s income that year, second only to health center revenue.  Federal funding for Planned Parenthood has increased by 45 percent since 2001-2002, when it  received a reported  $240.9 million from taxpayers. While federal orders mandate that government money not be used directly for abortions, pro-life advocates point out that federal money used to cover non-abortion costs frees up private money to pay for abortions. Favorite Experts Planned Parenthood is by far the most cited pro-abortion group when it comes to national media coverage. In the last six months, 30 broadcast and print reports have quoted Planned Parenthood representatives and another 26 have mentioned the organization. The 56 mentions of Planned Parenthood dwarf other pro-abortion groups, including the National Organization for Women (30) and NARAL Pro-Choice America (15). When abortion was a major focus of health care reform debates, the media turned to Planned Parenthood President Cecile Richards and other affiliated representatives to statements and analysis. When the media celebrated the 50 th  anniversary of “the Pill,” the media commemorated Planned Parenthood’s role in making it possible. A February 26 profile in The Washington Post painted a glowing picture of abortion doctor Carol Ball. The article described a “difficult time” for Ball and other doctors who perform late term abortions in South Dakota. When Planned Parenthood produced an ad in response to Focus on the Family’s pro-life Super Bowl ad, the media praised it. USA Today noted it “defend[ed] abortion rights,” although the Focus on the Family ad did not target abortion “rights.”   The New York Times on January 27 turned to Richards on the increase in teen pregnancy rates, and she used the opportunity bash abstinence education. “This new study makes it crystal clear that abstinence-only sex education for teenagers does not work,” Richards said. In addition to news reports related to Planned Parenthood, newspapers published five letters to the editor from readers mentioning the organization and fives letters to the editor from Planned Parenthood executives. Another seven op-eds and entertainment reviews mentioned Planned Parenthood, as well as 15 death notices, and a couple of comedians’ jokes. All told, the networks and newspapers mentioned Planned Parenthood more than 80 times in the last six months. But when someone noticed a $1.3 billion discrepancy in Planned Parenthood’s handling of federal money – crickets. The Sound of Silence One letter to the editor in the Los Angeles Times February 7 illustrated the effect the media blackout has had on public perceptions of Planned Parenthood. Responding to the media-manufactured controversy over Focus on the Family’s pro-life Super Bowl ad, a reader wrote, “If I had it, I would give millions to Planned Parenthood to advertise on CBS during the Super Bowl.” Well, dear reader, your wish has already come true. You might not know it from reading the Times, but Planned Parenthood already receives more than $350 million every year from you and every other American taxpayer, with no oversight from the “watchdogs” in the media. THG Talk: An Exclusive Interview with Jordin Sparks

Before American Idol viewers decided to vote for the same guitar-playing male every season (David Cook… Kris Allen … Lee DeWyze), they selected Jordin Sparks as their champion. We’ve been big fans of the talented singer since since she took the Fox stage and we were lucky enough to speak with her this week, as she took time away from her summer tour. We thank Jordin for her time and we present this exclusive interview below… What has the American Idol experience been like for you? Can it be compared to what you imagined it would be like? I imagined it would be easy, just a singing competition. HA! It was a lot of work and pretty stressful. But I made friendships that will last forever and I am really happy with how it turned out. You’ve sung with Chris Brown. You’ve sung at the Super Bowl. What has been the most memorable professional experience for you? Well, the fact that I get to sing for my job is the best thing. Everything else, the duet, the Super Bowl, touring… it’s all a bonus. Idol has received some criticism for naming three consecutive winners that were all very similar. Any thoughts on that? I definitely think that when the show started to allow instruments, it opened itself up to a whole bunch of people who wouldn’t have auditioned before. So I’m glad those people can have the opportunity as well. But the show shouldn’t receive criticism for naming winners the audience voted for. Any thoughts on Simon leaving? It’s bittersweet. Simon was made out to be the villain. I’m going to miss him for sure… It’s going to be so different without [Paula and Simon]. I wish them nothing by the best in whatever they do moving forward. What was it like to participate in the We Are the World remake ? It was amazing for me. The original is such a classic and pretty much everyone knows it… to see all the artists there for a cause bigger than ourselves was so humbling. This is your first-ever solo tour. Talk about your plans and hopes

Tom Cruise And Will.I.Am Explain How ‘Knight And Day’ Song Came To Be

‘When you can collaborate with a film you love, that’s a rare moment,’ Will tells MTV News of ‘Someday.’ By Kara Warner, with reporting by Josh Horowitz Photo: MTV News What happened when mega movie star Tom Cruise met mega music star Will.I.Am? The song “Someday,” which the Black Eyed Peas hitmaker composed for Cruise’s upcoming summer thriller, “Knight and Day.” MTV News recently caught up with Cruise and Will to talk about how their collaboration came to be. “First of all, I’m a fan of the Peas,” Cruise told MTV News. “We met at a charity event and got to talking: ‘We’ve got to find something to do together.’ … We were three-fourths of the way done [filming] ‘Knight and Day,’ and the Peas were playing in Miami, so we all went — Kate [wife Katie Holmes], Cameron [Diaz] and all of us went to go see them over Super Bowl weekend. As we were watching, it occurred to me that this is the perfect time, so I called up Will, and he doesn’t have any time, but I asked, ‘Are you interested [in doing a song for the film]?’ ” “I made time,” said Will, who was then shown portions of the film to get ideas for the track. “It was easy, because the film was so good and it inspired me to write the song. When you can contribute and participate and collaborate with a film you love, that’s a rare moment. That’s a godsend.” Cruise was impressed with Will’s ability to immediately tap into the theme of the film — and the fact that he composed on his phone. “He wrote the song on his BlackBerry,” Cruise marveled. “Right in the room.” “I don’t like to let that inspiration fly away, so I jot it down in my notes,” Will explained. “For ‘Someday,’ the lyric was ‘Someday/ I don’t want it to be one day, I want it right now.’ So when I left the editing [room], I wanted to remember the emotion I was supposed to put into the song.” “It was very cool,” Cruise said of Will’s process. “[And] totally organic to the film. I think it’s an incredible song.” In the film, which has been described as a “sexy action/comedy,” Cruise is Agent Miller, a covert operative sent on a mission from which he was not intended to return. Diaz is June Havens, a woman caught between Cruise’s agent and those he claims set him up. Through a series of double-crosses, narrow escapes and mistaken identities, they soon realize they can only count on each other. “Knight and Day” is directed by James Mangold (“Walk the Line,” “3:10 to Yuma”) and also stars Peter Sarsgaard, Viola Davis, Paul Dano, Maggie Grace and Marc Blucas. The film opens June 25. The Black Eyed Peas debuted “Someday” on Thursday at an afterparty that followed their concert at London’s O2 arena. At their Friday show in London, Cruise joined the group onstage and helped them perform their chart-topping song “I Gotta Feeling.” Check out everything we’ve got on “Knight and Day.” For breaking news, celebrity columns, humor and more — updated around the clock — visit MTVMoviesBlog.com .
