Westboro Baptist Church to Picket Steve Jobs’ Funeral, Leader Tweets via iPhone

The morons at the Westboro Baptist Church announced plans last night to protest Steve Jobs’ funeral, but even they can’t resist Apple’s really cool tech stuff. Margie Phelps, daughter of the church’s founder and a lawyer who represented the church during their First Amendment case at the Supreme Court (which Westboro won), Tweeted about the death of Steve Jobs using … wait for it … Her iPhone. “Westboro will picket his funeral. He had a huge platform; gave God no glory & taught sin,” Margie tweeted, apparently unable to appreciate the irony in embracing the cutting-edge advancements of a decent man they somehow condemn. One church member, Shirley Phelps-Roper, offered this take: She suggested that God was manipulating Jobs to help advance the message of Westboro Baptist Church, writing: “God used Steve Jobs to create amazing STUFF for WBC to preach!” Amen, sister. The Topeka, Kansas based church believes God punishes America for its tolerance of sin, acceptance of homosexuality, and so on. They often have demonstrated – legally but reprehensibly – at funerals of celebrities and armed service personnel. They can suck it.

Troy Davis Supporters Make Last-Minute Appeal For Death-Row Inmate

Big Boi spreads the word about protests in Georgia before Davis’ scheduled execution on Wednesday. By Gil Kaufman Protesters for Troy Davis gather in Atlanta on Tuesday Photo: Jessica McGowan/ Getty Images With his execution looming on Wednesday night (September 21), Georgia death-row inmate Troy Davis ‘ lawyers have been scrambling to piece together a last-minute appeal on his behalf. Davis has been fighting to win a clemency ruling that would spare him the death penalty for the 1989 killing of Georgia police officer Mark MacPhail, a crime he claims he did not commit. Time magazine reported that his lawyers offered on Tuesday to have him take a polygraph test if the pardons board would consider its results, and some of Davis’ supporters have suggested asking President Obama to intervene in the case, though legal experts said that was unlikely. A Georgia appeals panel refused the polygraph request on Wednesday in what has become the most high-profile death penalty case in the country in several years. A number of prominent hip-hop artists have taken up Davis’ cause, among them Diddy, ?uestlove, Killer Mike and Russell Simmons, as well as the ATL’s Big Boi. The Outkast co-founder has taken to his Twitter account to spread the word about the case and try to get the word out about a series of protests planned for Wednesday around the city. “Time to hit the streets people!!!! #Troydavis. Rally at the prison in Jackson Georgia 4:00 pm , time to be seen!!!!!” he wrote early Wednesday as part of a flurry of tweets about the topic. “Judge Penny Freezeman is apparently the only one that can stop the UNJUST execution of Troy Davis: 912-652-7252.” Boi’s account is full of retweets from other celebs weighing in, including Kim Kardashian, Diddy, writer Kevin Powell, Cedric the Entertainer and Marlon Wayans. “At this point if you’re in Atlanta or anywhere near, Jackson, Georgia, is where u need to be, out of towners can man the phones,” he wrote . MacPhail was working as a security guard at a Savannah, Georgia, Burger King in August 1989 when he tried to help a man who was being assaulted in a nearby parking lot. Davis was fingered as the assailant and during his 1991 trial a number of witnesses testified that they saw Davis shoot MacPhail, though a murder weapon and DNA evidence were never recovered from the scene. Ballistics tests showed that the fatal shot came from the same gun used in another shooting in which Davis was earlier convicted. Davis’ lawyers have argued that new ballistics tests disprove the prosecution’s case and that seven of the nine original eyewitnesses changed all or part of their testimony in later proceedings. The long-running case has garnered worldwide attention and Davis’ cause has been taken up by groups and individuals such as Amnesty International, the NAACP, former President Jimmy Carter, the Pope, civil rights leader Al Sharpton and former FBI director William Sessions, who’ve called on courts to grant Davis a hearing in light of the new evidence. Lawyer Brian Kammer also tried to file a last-minute appeal based on new ballistics evidence and allegations of misleading testimony used in the original trial to convict Davis, but legal experts predicted those efforts would also likely fail to spare his client’s life. Davis is scheduled to die by lethal injection at 7 p.m. on Wednesday. The case made it all the way to the Supreme Court last year, Davis’ lawyers failed to prove their client’s innocence. Davis has maintained his innocence all along, but prosecutors in the case have repeatedly said they feel confident that the right man was convicted. Watch ‘RapFix Live’ today at 4 pm ET on MTV.com as Big Boi and Pill discuss their protest of the Troy Davis execution with Sway. Related Artists Big Boi

‘Harold & Kumar’ Stars Promise ‘Enhanced Nudity’ In ‘3D Christmas’

‘The movie is in 3-D because the ‘Jersey Shore’ is in 3-D,’ Kal Penn jokes to MTV News in our Fall Movie Preview. By Eric Ditzian Kal Penn and John Cho in “A Very Harold & Kumar 3D Christmas” Photo: New Line Cinema Last summer, MTV News got a very special, very twisted look at ” A Very Harold & Kumar 3D Christmas ,” the third installment of Kal Penn and John Cho’s herbaceous buddy-comedy franchise, when we popped by the Detroit set. We can’t yet show you much of what we saw that day, but as part of our Fall Movie Preview, we’re rolling out a tasty nugget of our interview with Penn and Cho. In between cracking jokes about ’80s comedies, MTV programming and potential celebrity cameos, the duo let us know what we can expect when the new film, which focuses on the two estranged friends reuniting during the holidays, hits theaters November 4. Click for exclusive photos from Fall’s biggest flicks. MTV : So why is this movie in 3-D? Kal Penn : The movie is in 3-D because the “Jersey Shore” is in 3-D. John Cho : “Avatar” was in 3-D. I’m not in competition with “Avatar.” I’m not in competition with James Cameron. He does his thing. We do our thing. He makes cartoons. I understand he had a good year. I’m just saying, the technology isn’t his. Penn : I’m just psyched because “Goonies” was in 3-D and that’s why this is in 3-D. You’ve never seen “Goonies.” Cho : I’ve never seen “Goonies.” Penn : That is so crazy to me! That’s so nuts to me, dude. It’s egregious that you haven’t watched “Goonies.” MTV : Can we expect 3-D nakedness? Penn : Listen, you’re going to see some 3-Deeez nuts. [ Sings to the tune of Dr. Dre and Snoop Dogg’s “Deez Nuuuts” ] Cho : There’s enhanced nudity. Penn : Very ma ture, the way you’re saying that. Enhanced nudity. This is not the NPR interview; this is MTV. They just got done watching Snooki get arrested. You do not have to say anything other than “3-D nuts.” MTV : Have you had time to enjoy Detroit? Cho : I’ve been buying cars. I’ve got a lot of cash, and I’m spending it on automobiles. Lots of ’97 Pontiac Firebirds. Lot of Ford Tauruses. Penn : I like shooting in Detroit. If you have not been to Detroit, you should come. People are super friendly. There are a lot of beautiful buildings, and sadly many of them are abandoned. Hopefully the city bounces back. Look at our first film: I loved shooting in Toronto, but it was still a bummer that we had to leave the United States to shoot a quintessential American road-trip comedy. Cho : Also, Toronto had so many foreigners. Penn : We were the foreigners. Toronto is in a different country. Cho : No, we’re Americans. MTV : Why have Harold and Kumar grown apart? Cho : They’re at different times in their lives. Kumar is looking for a way to stay in his younger existence, and Harold is artificially trying to be more mature and is choosing an excessively old mature friend. MTV : What can we expect in terms of romance? Penn : When the last film left off, Kumar and Vanessa were obviously very much together. Over the next six years, Vanessa moved into Kumar’s apartment. They continued their relationship. It was moving down the road toward marriage. And then Kumar lost his job. He couldn’t stop smoking weed. It wasn’t as much the weed as him completely latching on to still being frivolous and still being down for whatever and not taking Vanessa seriously and taking her for granted. So slowly after he lost Harold to Maria, he kind of grew resentful of the notion that if his best friend could go off and choose this woman over him, then maybe everyone was just out to get him. He drifted further apart from Vanessa. That’s where we pick up now. MTV : Besides Neil Patrick Harris, what celebrity cameos are in the works? Penn : Patton Oswalt, Tom Lennon, Paula Abdul, Snooki and Mayor Koch. From “Abduction” to “Muppets, “Moneyball” to “Breaking Dawn,” the MTV Movies team is delving into the hottest upcoming flicks in our 2011 Fall Movie Preview. Check back daily for exclusive clips, photos and interviews with the films’ biggest stars. OK Go, My Morning Jacket Remember 1991: When Rock Rocked

Fugazi’s Steady Diet of Nothing and the Jesus Lizard’s Goat join list of great albums celebrating their 20th anniversary. By James Montgomery Fugazi’s Steady Diet of Nothing Photo: Dischord Records With the 20th anniversary of Nirvana ‘s massive Nevermind just a few short weeks away, much attention is being paid to rock’s last great era: 1991, a year that was overflowing with important, iconic (and, in some cases, overlooked) albums from bands both big and small. In a lot of ways, it was the year rock truly rocked, and so, to celebrate that fact, MTV News has been asking some of today’s biggest acts to remember their favorites form that truly epic year. So far, we’ve looked back at Metallica’s Black Album, the Red Hot Chili Peppers’ Blood Sugar Sex Magik, Dinosaur Jr.’s Green Mind, My Bloody Valentine’s Loveless , Slint’s Spiderland, Pearl Jam’s Ten and Soundgarden’s Badmotorfinger. Today, we’re turning our attention to Fugazi ‘s Steady Diet of Nothing and the Jesus Lizard ‘s Goat — two lesser-known (yet equally important) gems, that are fondly remembered by some high-profile fans. Fugazi, Steady Diet of Nothing It starts ominous, like the buzz emanating from a disturbed hornet’s nest (“Exit Only”) and ends frothing and growling, like a chained Doberman (“KYEO”), yet in between, the second studio album from Washington, D.C., stalwarts Fugazi is a precise, downright surgical exercise in rhythms, interwoven bass and guitars, and — dare we say it — melody. Most noted for its sparse production (which highlighted the lockstep team of bassist Joe Lally and drummer Brendan Canty) and its overtly political tone (“Dear Justice Letter” was inspired by the departure of liberal judge William J. Brennan from the Supreme Court), Steady Diet of Nothing set the blueprint for the next 10 years of the band’s exploits. It also remains a testament to the coiled, colossal power of, above all things, restraint. As Remembered by Damian Kulash, OK Go : “I grew up in Washington, D.C., and Fugazi was everything. Ian MacKaye, Fugazi, Dischord Records, they were like the Holy Trinity, they were the apostles, they were the entire religion of D.C. Everyone worshipped them, and when Steady Diet of Nothing came out … Repeater was the first record I had gotten by Fugazi, and Steady Diet was the first one that I could wait for, I could feel it coming out. It was so amazing, it was so musical, it was so timely, it was unlike anything else that was out there. I mean, everything Fugazi did seemed like it was coming out of the earth, you know? Like, the rest of the music in the world was all this crappy, commercial stuff, and they were this. They could not be ignored. The politics, the way they ran D.C., I mean, it was unbelievable. All shows were five bucks, all shows were all ages, it was incredible. I mean, when I was 15, I walked up to Ian MacKaye’s house and said, ‘Could I borrow some money to start a record label?’ And he said, ‘Yeah.’ Isn’t that crazy? Unbelievable.” The Jesus Lizard, Goat The pounding, primal, pretty-effed-up second album from one of alt-rock’s most disturbed (and sorta disturbing) bands, Goat is arguably the best of the Jesus Lizard’s many team-ups with producer Steve Albini — a claustrophobic, eternally sludgy thing that’s nearly stripped to the core. Still, it packs a punch, thanks in no small part to David Yow’s near-patented wild-man yowls, Duane Denison’s wobbling, skuzzy guitars, and the downward-spiraling rhythm section of David Wm. Sims and Mac McNeilly. After two more albums on Touch and Go, the Lizard would inexplicably make the leap to Capitol Records in 1996, a stint that lasted until 1999. They called it quits soon after, but to this day, the Jesus Lizard remain an important intersection of art-damaged noise and rock. As Remembered by Patrick Hallahan, My Morning Jacket : “It’s one of the best albums of all time. I think, if I’m not mistaken, it starts off with ‘Then Comes Dudley,’ ‘Mouthbreather,’ just so great. I’ll never forget the first Jesus Lizard concert I ever went to, they were the tightest rhythm section I’d ever seen, and then they had this f—ing amazing jazz guitarist playing on top of this rhythm section. Ear X-Tacy, that’s the name of our music store in Louisville, and I was there when it came out. The Jesus Lizard, Goat. One of the best accomplishments of 1991, and there were a whole lot of them that year.” Share your favorite memories of 1991’s seminal albums in the comments below! Luther Campbell Says He’ll Be A ‘Fighter’ In Miami Mayor Race

The ex-2 Live Crew rapper says his record-business experience ‘is allowing me to be able to run for a public office like this.’ By Alvin Blanco Luther Campbell Photo: Bennett Raglin/ WireImage It’s politics as usual for Luther “Uncle Luke” Campbell. On April 12, the former 2 Live Crew frontman, along with 10 other candidates, formally applied to run for mayor of Florida’s Miami-Dade County after a recall vote kicked then-mayor Carlos Alvarez out of office a month ago. MTV News caught up with the pioneering hip-hop artist and businessman to discuss his political ambitions. Campbell said he planned on running for mayor of Miami in 2012, but that Alvarez’s departure sped up his plans to “get off the bench and get in the game, get off the sideline.” Campbell’s platform includes economic development to revitalize small businesses, job creation, public safety and affordable housing, among other initiatives. While mainstream outlets with a superficial understanding of his career may dismiss him as just a former rapper trying to get into politics, Campbell insists his career has granted him just the right experience. “Look at my history. When you talk about rapper, at the end of the day you can say 2 Live Crew, but who owned the company?” Campbell told MTV News. “I explain to people that I am a businessman, as a kid I DJ’d, and then owned that company, and then 2 Live Crew. I give them the story about it. I let people know I did that on the weekends. I wasn’t able to go on long tours like Run-DMC and everybody because I had to run the business. I had to make hip-hop act] H-Town gold and platinum, I had to go and produce Pitbull and Trick Daddy and all these different artists. People just don’t understand that the music business is a business. It is a global business. That experience is allowing me to be able to run for a public office like this.” Campbell claims that his Luke Records was the first black-owned hip-hop label, releasing music from 2 Live Crew, H-Town, Poison Clan and his own solo material. Campbell also was instrumental in launching the careers of Trick Daddy and Pitbull. In recent years, the “I Wanna Rock” rapper has dialed back on his “Uncle Luke” reputation. He starred in a VH1 reality series called “Luke’s Parental Advisory” in 2008, and has performed community service and founded youth programs throughout Miami-Dade County for years. In the meanwhile, Miami has become a hotspot for the hip-hop world and the entertainment industry in general. Campbell had a hand in raising Miami’s profile via his artists’ videos and the groundwork he laid for the city’s current crop of hip-hop talent, like Rick Ross and DJ Khaled. Along with being a Miami native, Campbell believes that he possesses a greater affinity for the needs of its residents. “Right now the entertainment industry is a major economic boost for this city,” Campbell said. “These are some of the things that I created and I did, and I’m proud of that. So when I look at where we need to go as a community, who best has the ideas? Me. Some other guy who really is just in there just to take money from contractors and special interest groups, he’s in there to make money. I’m not in there to make money. I’m all right. I just want to make the haves and the have-nots all be able to participate in this beautiful city and get jobs and live comfortable.” What might not sit so well with Miami citizens, and what Campbell’s opponents will be sure to point out, are the past controversies surrounding his music. One infamous case was in 1990, when the American Family Association went after 2 Live Crew over the sexually explicit lyrics of “Me So Horny.” 2 Live Crew and Campbell defended themselves by citing their first-amendment rights to free speech and the case went all the way to the Supreme Court, where it was dismissed. Campbell defended his rights in court frequently, and being familiar with the justice system is another reason he believes he is qualified to run the affairs of his hometown. “One thing people know about me, I’m a fighter,” insisted Campbell, who listed Sonny Bono, Jesse Ventura and Arnold Schwarzenegger as examples of entertainers that became politicos. “Controversy comes with politics. All my controversy was based around politics. Tipper Gore came after me — that was politically motivated. When the vice president had something to say about us, when it’s time for me to go to the Supreme Court, all of that is politically motivated. So I understand politics as is.” Do you think Luther Campbell running for Miami-Dade mayor is a good idea? Share your opinions in the comments. Related Artists 2 Live Crew Luther Campbell
