Troy Davis was executed last night (September 22nd) in Jackson, Georgia for being convicted of killing an off-duty Savannah police officer, and several celebrities reacted strongly via Twitter. His case received international attention after an informer’s testimony that helped convict him turned out to be false, and several witnesses recanted. Davis was supposed to die by lethal injection last night at 7 pm, but it was delayed as the Supreme Court reviewed his case. His appeal for a reprieve was denied, and Davis was pronounced dead at 11:08 pm. Davis was 42. Davis’ lawyer stated, “Tonight the state of Georgia legally lynched an innocent man. Tonight I witnessed something tragic.” Many others agree and call Davis’ execution a miscarriage of justice. Here’s what some celebrities have been tweeting about his death: SOURCE Troy Davis Executed After #TroyDavis, Then What? Troy Davis was executed late Wednesday night for the 1989 murder of off-duty Savannah police officer Mark MacPhail. Davis died at 11:08 p.m., according to CNN. The execution was about four hours later than initially scheduled, because prison officials waited for a U.S. Supreme Court ruling on Davis’ request for a stay. After 10 p.m. ET, the Supreme Court, in a brief order, rejected Davis’ request. As we previously reported, Davis’ case had attracted international attention from groups like the NAACP and Amnesty International because seven of the nine witnesses against him have recanted or contradicted their testimony. Calls for Davis to be spared execution have been made by numerous dignitaries, including former President Jimmy Carter, Archbishop Desmond Tutu, Pope Benedict XVI, former FBI Director William Sessions, former Georgia Supreme Court Chief Justice Norman Fletcher and Larry Thompson, the former deputy U.S. attorney general. Jake Gyllenhaal and director Duncan Jones explain the sci-fi thriller’s trickier moments By Eric Ditzian, with additional reporting by Kara Warner Jake Gyllenhaal in “Source Code” Photo: Summit Entertainment If you’re anything like us, you walked out of “Source Code” with a whole lot of questions on your mind. What exactly is this computer code that sends Jake Gyllenhaal back into the past, in another man’s body? What is the true implication of the film’s twisty ending? With these questions still swirling in our heads, we hit up Gyllenhaal and director Duncan Jones for some answers. (Needless to say, major spoilers exist below). Where Does The Source Code Take Place? So the Source Code is a government computer program that allows Gyllenhaal’s Captain Colter Stevens to jump into another man’s body — a guy named Sean Fentressis, who died in a terrorist train bombing — to experience the final eight minutes of his life in an attempt to prevent the terrorist from detonating a second bomb. But is what Gyllenhaal experiences just a computer simulation? Or is it actually real? “The idea is that it’s a simulator, but it actually opens up access to a parallel reality,” Jones explained. “It literally creates new realities where things can happen in very different ways. Every time Colter is sent into the Source Code, they’re creating a new reality where a new terrorist event occurs. So in a sense, every time Colter fails, they actually created a new terrorist event.” Why’d They Make The Terrorist a Lone Gunman? As Gyllenhaal searches the train for the bomber, he finds himself engaging in more than a little bit of racial profiling. As it turns out, the true culprit is not some clich
‘If you are serious about the meeting, I want Randy’s Donuts, swivel chairs and a megaphone,’ Tyler, the Creator tells record exec. By Alvin Blanco Photo: Roger Kisby/ Getty Images Los Angeles’ OFWGKTA (Odd Future Wolf Gang Kill Them All) are one of the most lauded and debated acts in hip-hop today. Being a hot commodity has granted the collective the luxury of having music executives seek out their services, and Odd Future have in turn conceived some odd requests in order to gain their audience. Odd Future is asking record label execs to meet with them to discuss business at the Supreme skate shop in Fairfax, California, according to the New York Post . SRC Records founder Steve Rifkind was able to get them to his office but allegedly only after acquiescing to Odd Future mouthpiece Tyler, the Creator’s demands. “If you are serious about the meeting, I want Randy’s Donuts, swivel chairs and a megaphone,” Tyler reportedly told Rifkind. It was also revealed that Bad Boy Records head honcho Sean “Diddy” Combs was the one who set up the meeting between Justin Bieber and one of his biggest fans, Tyler, the Creator . Although Tyler has signed a one-album deal with XL Recording and MellowHype is having the album BlackendWhite formally released by Fat Possum Records, Odd Future itself is still unsigned. Some of the other major rap industry players trying to earn Odd Future’s services include Interscope/ Geffen/ A&M chairman Jimmy Iovine, who signed Eminem, and Jay-Z, who signed Rihanna to Def Jam while he was the label’s president and whose Roc Nation is currently home to Jay Electronica and Willow Smith. Jay-Z met with Odd Future during the South by Southwest Festival — over tacos — and left quite an impression. “It was hard for me to look at Jay-Z for 10 minutes. Like, real sh–, this is the godfather of music,” MellowHype’s Hodgy Beats told MTV News. “I just shook his hand in his house. Honestly, it made me want to work harder. Jay-Z is amazing.” Related Videos The Wonderful Adventures Of Odd Future At SXSW 2011 Related Artists Odd Future Odd Future Wolf Gang Kill Them All Diddy
