‘Hunger Games’ Sequel Might Be Penned By ‘Slumdog’ Writer

Lionsgate is reportedly courting screenwriter Simon Beaufoy, who won an Oscar for ‘Slumdog Millionaire.’ By Kevin P. Sullivan Jennifer Lawrence in “The Hunger Games” Photo: Lionsgate Ordering a script for the sequel to a film that hasn’t come out yet seems to be a quickly growing trend in Hollywood. On Wednesday, we heard rumors that Warner Bros. already has a shortlist of potential writers for the “Man of Steel” sequel, and Thursday (November 17), Deadline reported that Lionsgate has already begun courting a writer for the next “Hunger Games” film, “Catching Fire.” According to the report, Lionsgate wants Simon Beaufoy, the Academy Award-winning writer behind the “Slumdog Millionaire” screenplay, to pen the next adaptation of the Suzanne Collins series. Collins and “Hunger Games” director Gary Ross contributed a lot of the writing for the first film’s script, and the pair had planned to collaborate again on “Catching Fire.” But post-production on “Hunger Games,” which opens in theaters on March 23, has kept Ross too busy to begin work on the next script, necessitating the hiring of a new writer. Ross is, however, expected to return as director. Negotiations between Beaufoy and Lionsgate have not officially begun, but the studio has apparently made its intentions clear. Lionsgate had previously announced that the three “Hunger Games” books would eventually become four separate movies. How those movies will be broken up remains to be seen. Recent film series to have done that, “Harry Potter” and “Twilight,” split the final book entry into two films, but there have been no specific plans announced for “Mockingjay,” the third book in this series. In addition to “Slumdog,” Beaufoy’s other writing credits include another Danny Boyle-directed film, “127 Hours,” and “The Full Monty.” Check out everything we’ve got on “The Hunger Games.” For young Hollywood news, fashion and “Twilight” updates around the clock, visit HollywoodCrush.MTV.com . Lionsgate Wants Gary Ross, Slumdog Writer for Hunger Games Sequel Catching Fire

The jury’s still out as far as I’m concerned on whether or not director Gary Ross ( Seabiscuit ) was the right director to helm Suzanne Collins ‘s The Hunger Games , even with the mostly-satisfying first trailer debut earlier this week. Lionsgate, however, seems more confident in Ross, as they want him to return to helm the second Hunger Games installment, 2013’s Catching Fire , with writer Simon Beaufoy ( Slumdog Millionaire, 127 Hours ) reportedly in the running to script.

Patti Labelle Sued For Allegedly Throwing Water At Mom & Child

Read the original:

Patti Labelle is being sued for allegedly throwing water at a mother and her 18-month-old daughter during a scuffle in a New York City apartment building. The argument supposedly began when Patti, who was renting an apartment in the building while she was appearing in the Broadway musical “Fela!”, allegedly yelled at the mother for letting her young child wander a distance away from her while she fidgeted with her belongings. LaBelle chastised the mother, Roseanna Monk, and when Monk scooped up the child and told LaBelle it was none of her business, the singer allegedly threw water on them from a bottle she was carrying and then launched into an obscenity-filled tirade. When the child started wailing, Monk reportedly made a remark to LaBelle, and the singer charged at her and tried to hit her. The Monks filed a complaint with police; no arrests were made. The lawsuit, which seeks unspecified damages, comes five months after a West Point cadet sued LaBelle over a Houston airport scuffle with her bodyguards. He said they attacked him for no reason in March 2010. She counter sued the cadet, saying he tried to get into her limousine and was drunk and using racial slurs, which he denied. Roseanna Monk’s lawyer said Monk had asked LaBelle for an apology and a donation to a children’s cancer charity but was rebuffed. The Monks feel “someone’s got to teach her even a diva can’t attack and frighten and assault regular people in the building.” SOURCE Patti LaBelle Names Ledisi As Her Successor [VIDEO]

Is “The Hunger Games” The Next “Twilight”? [TRAILER]

Read the original post:

The Hunger Games won’t be coming out until March 23, 2012, but some are already comparing it to the ridiculously popular book series-turned-film franchise Twilight. The Hunger Games is also adapted from novels, and the trilogy penned by Suzanne Collins is extremely beloved by young readers. Twilight Breaking Dawn hits theaters this weekend, but The Hunger Games won’t be released until next year. Take a look at both trailers below.

‘Hunger Games’ Role Is ‘So Right’ For Josh Hutcherson

‘I had never read a character that was more like who I am as a person,’ he tells MTV News of playing Peeta. By Kara Warner Josh Hutcherson in “The Hunger Games” Photo: Lionsgate All right, “Hunger Games” fans, are you ready for a little exclusive interview with soon-to-be superstar Josh Hutcherson? We’ve been hinting about it ever since we named Hutcherson “Most Likely to Play a Superhero” as part of our New Class , and the time has finally come to unveil this nifty bit of footage that will have you convinced (if you weren’t already) he’s one to watch in 2012. For those unfamiliar with the talented 18-year-old, he made a splash in Hollywood last year with his buzzed-about performance in the award-season darling “The Kids Are All Right,” and now he’s embodying the pivotal and beloved role of Peeta Mellark in the highly anticipated big-screen adaptation of Suzanne Collins’ dystopian best-seller “The Hunger Games.” MTV News was very lucky to catch up with Hutcherson recently, when he discussed the importance of landing the role, what Peeta means to him and his favorite scene to film. MTV News : Talk to us about what the role of Peeta means to you and why you love him. Josh Hutcherson : It’s so crazy. When I read the books, I had never read a character that was more like who I am as a person and had kind of my core values and what I believe in. So it kind of drove me crazy in a way, because I felt like I was so right for it, then I had to go through this crazy audition process. So to finally be making the movie and now we’re finished, it’s like, somebody please pinch me, because I still don’t believe this is actually happening. For me, it’s just an honor to be a part of such a great story. Gary Ross is such an amazing director, and Jennifer Lawrence is perfect, and everyone else we cast was really great. MTV : What was the audition process like? Did you do specific scene work? Hutcherson : For the audition process, I came in the first time and read a few scenes for Gary Ross and [author] Suzanne Collins and some of the other producers involved. Then maybe about a week or so, maybe two weeks later, I came in and did a screen test with Jennifer, where I actually read the scenes with her so they could see how the chemistry worked. Both of them felt really great, but as an actor, you just pick apart every single thing that you do, so for me, I was on pins and needles waiting to find out. And then when I finally found out, my jaw hit the floor. I was so excited. MTV : What were your favorite scenes to film? Hutcherson : It’s very similar to the book. Probably my favorite scenes are all the scenes with myself and Katniss in the cave, because they’re really emotional and you get to see a lot of their relationship develop there, so for me as an actor, I liked that a lot. And then of course all the physical running through the forest — that was really fun as well. MTV : Did you guys get a lot of bumps and bruises from all that stunt work? Hutcherson : There were tons of bumps and bruises, yeah. It was pretty intense. ‘Hunger Games’ Is ‘Staggering,’ Woody Harrelson Says

‘It’s almost impossible to describe, it’s so unusual,’ he tells MTV News. By Kara Warner with reporting by Josh Horowitz Woody Harrelson Photo: MTV News For all our fellow “Hunger Games” fans out there, the wait for the film’s March 23 release date is both highly anticipated and a bit painful. Lucky for us, MTV News has encountered a few of the film’s principal players over the course of the past few months, like Jennifer Lawrence and director Gary Ross , who have helped tease a few key details to make the wait for the film seem slightly shorter. Now, we are very happy to share another special cast encounter: our recent chat with Woody Harrelson , a.k.a. Haymitch Abernathy, who revealed the secrets of his character’s ‘do and a few teases about the look of the film, as well as how much fun he had with Lawrence, Josh Hutcherson and his other co-stars. “The hair, when I was thinking about what to do for the character, I hung out with my brother Brett, and that is exactly the way his hair is,” Harrelson explained of how the long, slightly shaggy hairdo came to be. “I was like, ‘OK, let’s get a wig. Let’s do the Brett Harrelson hair.’ It’s kind of cool. I really liked the look. It’s a fun character, and I think it’s going to be a good movie.” We asked Harrelson how closely he resembles the alcoholic, unkempt, out-of-shape former champion, as described by author Suzanne Collins in the books — like, for example, if he wore a fat suit or gained a bit of weight. “No, I didn’t want to do the paunch,” Harrelson revealed. “In many ways, I tried to go against this rough, old, typical concept of what he would be like. I don’t know yet that I succeeded, but I think it turned out good,” he said. “I loved working with Gary Ross. I think he is just a great director, an amazing guy.” With regard to the look and feel of the big-screen adaptation, Harrelson called the visuals “staggering.” “It’s almost impossible to describe, it’s so unusual. Even ice in the glass, even the glasses are not normal glasses. There’s nothing that you’ve seen before. It’s real original artistic vision,” he said. “I think people are going to like it.” One of the things Harrelson liked — in addition to Haymitch, of course — was working with his young co-stars, particularly Lawrence and Hutcherson. “I think they’re just marvelous actors. I think they just knocked it out of the park,” he gushed. “Just as people, [they are] about as fun as it gets. They really are fun folks. It’s cool, because I’ve never even done a sequel, and I just signed on to four movies, so we’re going to be spending a lot of time together between doing the movies and press and everything, so it’s great to love these guys. “Having done this first one, I can say I do look forward to doing the next one,” he added. “It wasn’t a chore. It was actually the opposite; it was a lot of fun. They managed to mix business and pleasure really well, that whole group. I’d say we get after it again next year.” Check out everything we’ve got on “The Hunger Games.” For young Hollywood news, fashion and “Twilight” updates around the clock, visit HollywoodCrush.MTV.com . ‘Hunger Games’ Director Unpacks VMA Footage

Gary Ross says Jennifer Lawrence will help him give viewers the same ‘visceral experience’ as the books. By Eric Ditzian Jennifer Lawrence in “The Hunger Games” Photo: Lionsgate While the “Hunger Games” teaser trailer lit up the MTV Video Music Awards on Sunday, director Gary Ross was back in North Carolina, his head space not so much occupied with Lady Gaga in drag and Lil Wayne’s long dreads as it was with Katniss Everdeen and the dystopian nation called Panem. Ross is still in the midst of shooting his adaptation of “The Hunger Games,” but last week, with the teaser set to debut at the VMAs, he took the time to touch base with MTV News via Skype to give us his exclusive commentary about the footage. Katniss Vision Suzanne Collins’ novel is a first-person tale, and it’s clear from the teaser Ross is striving to capture that same sort of immediate access into Katniss’ head. “I think one of the most important things when you adapt a book like this is to give people the experience they really had when they read it — the same kind of visceral experience they had,” he explained. “I think [the reason] everybody felt so strongly in what Suzanne did was that they were with this character, they understood her, they were in her shoes, they were in her head. It was such an intense first-person experience. My job in making a film is first and foremost to reflect that. “How do we get inside Katniss’ head? How do we feel what she’s feeling? How do we become her?” Ross continued. “The first thing that allows you to do that is Jennifer Lawrence, because she’s such an unbelievable actor. She has so much depth and power and talent and sophistication and sensitivity and subtly that she’s become Katniss Everdeen synonymously. I hope people feel about Jen and Katniss at the end of this three-book cycle the way they feel about Daniel Radcliffe and Harry Potter — that they’ve become very, synonymous with one another.” Get “Hunger Games” experts’ analysis of the teaser. Gale’s Voiceover That voiceover you hear during the trailer? That’s Katniss’ District 12 pal Gale Hawthorne (Liam Hemsworth). And Ross has a very specific idea in mind about the importance of making Gale a part of this initial footage (and not Katniss’ Hunger Games companion, Peeta Mellark). “As everyone knows, Gale is an enormous part of Katniss’ life, but he’s not as big a part of the first book as he is the subsequent books,” the director told us. “I think he’s very, very present and he’s tremendously important, but of course we shift into the Capitol and then the arena, where Peeta ends up playing a more prominent role. But he’s in her head, he’s in her life, he’s something that echoes with her throughout the games, as any reader of the book knows, so he plays an obviously prominent role.” The Difficulty of the Shoot Though Ross and his team didn’t have to contend with giant fireballs in the woods, as Katniss does in the first look, the filmmaker revealed that the set in the North Carolina forest posed quite a challenge to the production. “This was like shooting in Vietnam,” he said. “I felt like I was making ‘Apocalypse Now.’ The thing was so rigorous. We spent something like six weeks outside in the jungle every day, hiking up and down mountains with cameras and in the mud and in driving rain storms. We all felt it, but nobody felt it as much as Jen did. It’s been an intense physical experience for her.” Just Getting Started While Ross was proud to show off this initial footage, he told us this is only the beginning and that there are a few scenes and characters in particular that he can’t wait for people to see in the future. “We’re still shooting, so unfortunately, it’s just a teaser,” he said. “We could only give you a little bit, because we’re still down here making the movie. I’ve got to leave in half an hour and shoot. But there’s a lot of things to come that I think are going to be hugely epic and very emotional and incredibly powerful. I think that we’ve done wonderful things with the mutts. I think that we’ve done a tremendous job bringing the Capitol to life, and I think that’s going to be really, really exciting for people to see. And all the performances! Wait till you see Stanley Tucci do Caesar Flickerman.” Check out everything we’ve got on “The Hunger Games.” For young Hollywood news, fashion and “Twilight” updates around the clock, visit HollywoodCrush.MTV.com . Taylor Swift Cancels Tour Dates Due To Illness

Singer postpones a handful of shows after coming down with bronchitis. By Jocelyn Vena Taylor Swift Photo: Bryan Bedder/ Getty Images It may be a little difficult for Taylor Swift to Speak Now. The singer canceled several dates on her summer tour after coming down with bronchitis. According to a statement from her label, Swift has had to shuffle around a few shows because she “has bronchitis, and has been advised by her doctor that she is not well enough to perform this week.” Her July 8 show in Charlotte, North Carolina, has been rescheduled for November 16, and two dates in Atlanta, on July 9 and 10, are now slated for October 1 and 2. “It breaks my heart to miss out on this weekend’s shows with my friends in Charlotte and Atlanta,” the star in a statement. “I would never cancel if I thought I was physically able to perform these shows. I am so sorry to the fans, but I look forward to seeing you when we come back through your towns, which we will do.” Swift’s tour will resume on July 14 in Montreal. Swift canceled a concert in Kentucky over the weekend, marking the first time the singer has ever had to cancel a show due to illness. She alerted her fans to the news on Twitter , writing, “Louisville, I so sorry to have to postpone this show to Oct 11. This is my first time having to do this. I’m so, so sorry.” When Swift spoke to MTV News in May about the Speak Now tour, she explained it would be all about the fans. “That’s why I’m so blown away. That’s why I can’t wait to go out on tour and thank them personally,” she explained. “We get to have such groovy, cool stuff happening. I’ve never had pyro before. I’ve never had aerialists before. It’s got this grand staircase. The stage in itself looks like an old-world theater. I can’t believe we get to play stadiums. I’m so excited about this tour. I want to live on that stage. I hope people leave the concert feeling like they know you better.” Send your get-well wishes to Taylor in the comments below! Related Videos MTV First: Taylor Swift Related Artists Taylor Swift
