Lenny Kravitz Reads Up On ‘Hunger Games’ Character

The rocker says he’s on the second book of Suzanne Collins’ trilogy, preparing himself to play stylist Cinna. By Terri Schwartz, with reporting by James Montgomery Lenny Kravitz Photo: MTV News “The Hunger Games” has an impressive cast of new talent, unknowns and renowned stars that puts any franchise movie to shame, but one of the most surprising casting decisions made by director Gary Ross was to choose rocker Lenny Kravitz to play stylist Cinna . When MTV News caught up with Kravitz to chat about his forthcoming album, Black and White America (due out August 30), he said he’s finally read the first of Suzanne Collins’ “Hunger Games” trilogy. Cinna — whose name often gets misinterpreted as “Sinner” when Kravitz says it, he told us — is one of the most significant secondary characters throughout the “Hunger Games” trilogy. The brilliant costumes he creates for leading lady Katniss Everdeen before the games help give her the confidence that she needs to get through a televised battle-to-the-death with 23 other teens. And his very subtle form of rebellion against the oppressive Capitol is not without consequences. Since he is still only partway through the second novel “Catching Fire,” Kravitz has heard only hints of what would happen to his character in a potential second movie. “People have told me, but I’m on the second one now, so don’t tell me how …” Kravitz said, cutting off any spoilers. “The Hunger Games” will be Kravitz’s second big-screen acting performance after 2009’s “Precious.” When asked how he is preparing for what may end up being quite a dramatic scene in the movie’s sequel, Kravitz simply replied, “I’ll do it as best as I can.” When Kravitz was announced as Cinna, MTV’s Hollywood Crush blog caught up with several “Hunger Games” experts to hear their thoughts on the casting decision. Most of them were behind it, but the main concern was whether the singer had the acting chops for the performance. “I guess the real question people have is, you know, what acting experience does Lenny Kravitz have? I’m confident that he can pull it off and do a really fantastic job,” “Hunger Games” Fireside chat host Adam Spunberg said. “He certainly looks the part, at least in my mind, how I pictured Cinna,” “Hunger Games” Examiner Sara Grundell said. “Lenny Kravitz totally fits that mental image I had. I guess we’ll have to wait and see.” Check out everything we’ve got on “The Hunger Games.” For young Hollywood news, fashion and “Twilight” updates around the clock, visit HollywoodCrush.MTV.com . ‘The Hunger Games’ Drafts Josh Hutcherson, Liam Hemsworth

Hutcherson will play Peeta, while Hemsworth is cast as Gale, studio announces. By Kara Warner Josh Hutcherson and Liam Hemsworth Photo: Getty Images After months of debate, speculation and rumors , Lionsgate has officially announced casting for the two male leads in the highly-anticipated film, “The Hunger Games.” Josh Hutcherson (“The Kids Are All Right”) will play romantic, reluctant hero Peeta Mellark, and Liam Hemsworth (“The Last Song”) will play brooding boy-next-door Gale Hawthorne. Hutcherson and Hemsworth will star alongside Jennifer Lawrence, who was recently announced as having landed the coveted role of Katniss Everdeen . Hutcherson has been acting for over a decade in films like “Bridge to Terabithia” and “Journey to the Center of the Earth,” but he is perhaps most recognizable for his role in last year’s critical darling and Oscar-nominated film, “The Kids Are All Right.” Australian Hemsworth, although slightly newer to Hollywood, has been garnering attention from his roles in TV and film, particularly British soap, “Neighbours” and last year’s tear-jerker romance, “The Last Song.” (That and the fact that he dated Miley Cyrus.) “The Hunger Games” is based on Suzanne Collins’ dystopian best-seller about children forced to compete in an annual, televised fight-to-the-death battle. It is an intense and violent story of survival, corrupt governments and a struggling population, with a heartbreaking love triangle thrown in for good measure. The fanbase for “The Hunger Games” is a fiercely loyal one whose ferocity and dedication to Collins’ source material have drawn comparisons to the “Twilight” fans, although “Hunger Games” readers tend to skew slightly older. The film is slated to hit theaters March 23, 2012. For young Hollywood news, fashion and “Twilight” updates around the clock, visit HollywoodCrush.MTV.com . Gary Ross Defends Jennifer Lawrence Casting, Says Hunger Games Author Approves

On the heels of today’s confirmation that 20-year-old Oscar nominee Jennifer Lawrence will play Katniss Everdeen, the 16-year-old heroine of Lionsgate’s The Hunger Games adaptation, EW caught up with director Gary Ross to get his explanation of the casting move. According to the interview, Lawrence’s age and her blonde hair — details that raised fan eyebrows when the Winter’s Bone star first emerged as a front-runner — are of no matter to Ross, who says the choice was “the easiest casting decision I ever made in my life.” And if it makes any difference, Suzanne Collins apparently agrees.

Author Suzanne Collins gives Oscar-nominated actress her blessing to play Katniss Everdeen. By Kara Warner Jennifer Lawrence Photo: id-pr.com At long last, after seemingly endless debate, speculation and rumors, MTV News has received exclusive confirmation that Jennifer Lawrence has landed the highly coveted role of Katniss Everdeen in the big-screen adaptation of “The Hunger Games.” According to Lionsgate, the 20-year-old actress is a fitting choice due to her “meteoric ascent” to Hollywood stardom with her Oscar-nominated role in “Winter’s Bone,” to be followed by roles in Matthew Vaughn’s “X Men: First Class” and “The Beaver,” directed by Jodie Foster. “Hunger Games” author Suzanne Collins has already given Lawrence’s casting her blessing, via a statement from the studio. “Jennifer’s just an incredible actress,” Collins said. “So powerful, vulnerable, beautiful, unforgiving and brave. I never thought we’d find somebody this perfect for the role. And I can’t wait for everyone to see her play it.” Director Gary Ross also praised his lead actress: “I’m so excited to work with Jen and see her bring this character to life. Katniss requires a young actress with strength, depth, complexity, tenderness, and power. There are very few people alive who can bring that to a role. Jen brings it in spades. She’s going to be an amazing Katniss.” The movie, based on Collins’ dystopian best-seller about children forced to compete in a fight-to-the-death battle, is slated to hit theaters March 23, 2012. The Hunger Games Casting Update: Hunter Parrish as Peeta Mellark?

Has The Hunger Games found its Peeta Mellark? Sources tell E! News that Weeds star Hunter Parrish is in serious negotiations to take on the male lead in this anticipated movie franchise. He confirmed to the site last night that he has “met the producers” and would be “grateful” for the opportunity. Parrish hasn’t seen a script for the film based on Suzanne Collins’ bestselling novel trilogy yet, but it’s one of the most sought after roles in Hollywood. (Alex Pettyfer is also under consideration to play Peeta.) Jennifer Lawrence is the leading contender to portray Katniss Everdeen. Said Parrish of the outpouring of support he’s received on Twitter: “You don’t get much better than that. The true fans of the book. So regardless of whether I’m a part of the film or not, I feel honored to just sort of be thought of.” What do you think? Would this 23-year star be a good fit as Mellark? [Photo: WENN.com]

‘Hunger Games’ Casting News: What We Know So Far

A long list of young actresses, including Hailee Steinfeld and Jennifer Lawrence, are up for the coveted role of Katniss. By Amy Wilkinson Jennifer Lawrence Photo: Getty Images In the dystopian world imagined by Suzanne Collins in her best-selling young-adult trilogy “The Hunger Games,” anxious teens hope against all odds that they can avoid the titular, televised fight to the death decreed by their government. But in the real world, Hollywood’s rising stars are battling to get into the arena for the upcoming adaptation of the series’ first novel due out March 23, 2012. And no role is more hotly contested than that of 16-year-old District 12 tribute Katniss Everdeen. Casting speculation has run rampant since the news came in March 2009 that the novel’s screen rights had been purchased by Lionsgate. U.K. “Skins” star Kaya Scodelario was an early fan favorite for the role and, along with , “Nikita” star Lyndsy Fonseca was reportedly among the first to receive a script. Slowly but surely, however, actresses from their early teens to their mid-20s have begun hungrily eying the part of the 16-year-old heroine. “Katniss is my homegirl,” “Kick-Ass” star Chloe Moretz told MTV News back in October 2010. “I would absolutely die to be in ‘The Hunger Games.’ I’m just sayin’ that.” A few weeks later, “Vampire Diaries” star Malese Jow spoke with Hollywood Crush , expressing a similar sentiment. “I would do my absolute best,” she promised. “I would give it 2,000 percent for everyone. I know there are some die-hard fans out there.” A couple of young actresses have gone so far as to tweet pictures of themselves done up as Katniss (and in some cases, sporting her signature bow and arrow). For Halloween 2010, “Eclipse” star Jodelle Ferland dressed as the tribute, though she downplayed the stunt tweeting, “Don’t take it so seriously … I’m not trying to say, ‘Hey, look at me. I should be Katniss.’ ” More recently, “Camp Rock” actress Alyson Stoner posted various photos of herself dressed in Katniss’ iconic Hunger Games uniform and climbing walls as part of her “training.” Though plenty of up-and-coming actresses have thrown their name into the ring, producer Nina Jacobson told The L.A. Times early on that a known name wasn’t necessary for the part. “It really comes down to finding that person who can capture the physicality, the vulnerability and the toughness,” she said. “She’s a paradoxical character and you need somebody who has the range to capture all of those dimensions.” In a piece in The Wall Street Journal detailing the hunt for the “next Hailee Steinfeld,” the paper went behind the scenes of several upcoming YA adaptations, including “The Hunger Games,” in which casting director Debra Zane explained that an open casting call had gone out for Katniss (Caucasian, between the ages of 15 and 20, someone who could portray “underfed but strong” and “naturally pretty underneath her tomboyishness”), and that she’d seen about 50 girls so far. Nonetheless, last week Variety reported that Lionsgate had three Oscar-nominated actresses in their crosshairs: Abigail Breslin, Hailee Steinfeld and Jennifer Lawrence (with Lawrence as the front-runner). Steinfeld revealed to MTV News on the Oscars red carpet that she had already met with director Gary Ross, saying, “It’s definitely something that we’re taking one day at a time and making sure that everything is in place.” Entertainment Weekly quickly filed a report that conflicted with Variety ‘s, citing sources at Lionsgate who said that there was not yet a front-runner for the role and that about 30 actresses had been seen for the part, including a few who hadn’t yet gained much “Hunger Games” heat (like “The Lovely Bones” star Saoirse Ronan). Fan site The Hob followed up with Scodelario’s people (one of the actresses included in EW ‘s report), who said she had not in fact, read for the role yet. Ultimately, Lionsgate’s pick for Katniss will influence which of Hollywood’s young actors will be eyed for the roles of fellow Hunger Games contestant Peeta and Katniss’ childhood friend Gale (age is a big factor here). Nonetheless, several actors, including Liam Hemsworth and Alex Pettyfer, have told MTV News they have met with the studio about the Peeta role. It will be a “Hunger Games” fight to the finish, indeed. Who do you hope the odds are in favor of to play Katniss? Samantha Ronson to Lindsay Lohan: Lay Off the Crack!

“If you’re having girl problems I feel bad for you son … I got 99 problems but a b!tch ain’t one.” – Jay-Z If only Samantha Ronson could say the same. Whatever dumpster Lindsay Lohan ended up in last night, she got the obligatory, accusatory Tweets out first. Alleging that her ex is selling her out to celebrity gossip sites, along with plenty of other gibberish, the train wreck had this to say to her DJ ex: I’m pretty sure that @samantharonson just threw a fit @33years old and my friend tal @draishollywood … illegally open NOW at this hour Asked me, after being here jus 4 Timbalands birthday-to leave even though she stayed over just 2nights ago-tired of @samantharonson Playing the innocent card, while chatting to tmz just like my ex-father, when all I’ve ever done is fall for a girl Yep. All she’s ever done is fall for a girl … hurl drinks at a girl, accuse a girl of doing Miley’s ex , fall in a cactus, and have DFCS officials visit, etc. WHAT A MESS : We sympathize with Samantha . This rant apparently resulted from LL getting kicked out of a club (so much for her retirement ) last night at Ronson’s request after she went insane in there. Sam’s response to Lindsay’s online babbling was to Tweet the following: “I’m not here. This isn’t happening.” If I sing that to myself enough times will it be true? One more thing- if you’re gonna be an idiot an do coke- do it outside the bathroom- some of us actually use them to pee in. Jack and crack will make for some crazy tweets. Indeed. We eagerly await her retaliatory Tweets once the janitor tosses the previous night’s trash into the bin outside the club and she wakes up in there. NOTE : Follow THG on Twitter … we won’t spread lies about you.

Lady GaGa, Conan O’Brien, Others: Very Influential

Time Magazine has come out with its annual list of the world’s 100 most influential people. It’s divided into four categories (Leaders, Heroes, Thinkers and Artists), although we have no idea how Sarah Palin ended up in the number-nine slot as a “Leader.” What does she lead, exactly? Whatever organization pays her the most money to speak at its event? But anyway. Lady GaGa is considered the most influential artist on the planet, with Conan O’Brien ranking second. Also in the top 10: Oprah, Taylor Swift and Robert Pattinson . The magazine spoke to a number of people closely associated to these celebrities and received the following takes on them: Cyndi Lauper on Lady GaGa : Lady Gaga’s art captures the period we’re in right now. She isn’t a pop act, she is a performance artist. She herself is the art. She is the sculpture. George Lopez on Conan O’Brien : Conan’s tenacity and wit have been an inspiration to me on my own late-night show. I’m happy and proud that we’ll be playing on the same team when he comes to basic cable. Chris Weitz on Robert Pattinson : Rob is a reserved, bookish sort of specimen, a guy who’d rather spend the night at the corner table in the pub with friends — a bit of a weirdo, frankly, in the best sense. For the complete list of influential artists, see below. Lady Gaga Conan O’Brien Kathryn Bigelow Oprah Winfrey Valery Gergiev Robert Pattinson Ashton Kutcher Suzanne Collins Taylor Swift Neil Patrick Harris Carlton Cuse and Damon Lindelof Prince Lea Michele Jerry Holkins and Mike Krahulik Simon Cowell Neill Blomkamp Elton John Marc Jacobs David Chang Banksy Chetan Bhagat Sandra Bullock Ricky Gervais Han Han James Cameron
