Jennifer Lopez: An ‘American Idol’ Cheat Sheet

Catch up on all the dish about new judge J.Lo before season 10 begins. By Jocelyn Vena “American Idol” judge Jennifer Lopez Photo: Tony Duran / FOX Jennifer Lopez has long been a triple-threat, having conquered music, movies and everything in between. This week, “Jenny From the Block” adds a new gig to her extensive resume: “American Idol” judge . On Wednesday night (January 18), as the new season of the hit Fox reality series kicks off, fans are eager to see what the one-time “In Living Color” “fly girl” will bring to the mix, alongside fellow newbie Steven Tyler and “Idol” vet Randy Jackson. Since September’s announcement that she got the gig, Lopez has made it clear she brings one thing to the table: “tough love.” “I think there are definitely better ways to get your point across [than being cruel],” she said at last year’s announcement. “I’ve mentored on the show before, so I think people have seen that and kinda can feel how I’ll be — or maybe they’ll be surprised.” Later that month, Lopez used three words to describe her judging style : “tough, easy and fair.” “I don’t want to let anybody really great [not make it through] because they’re nervous, and not get to see what they could have did,” Lopez said. “They’re going to come in here and be a little bit nervous in the beginning, and then you realize, ‘Wow, that person is really talented.’ So we work them a little bit more than maybe you’ve seen in the past. We’ve given them more of a chance. “We know what it’s like to be out there,” Lopez added. “I was energized by all of their spirit when they come in here, and they’re so hopeful about what could happen and how it could be.” That same week, “AI” executive producer Nigel Lythgoe posted a photo online of the new judges sitting at the table with “Idol” host Ryan Seacrest and Jackson. With the release of her new song, “On the Floor” (featuring Pitbull, produced by RedOne), and the new season ready to kick off, Lopez revealed she’s really meshing with her fellow judges. “I love everybody,” she said back in October. “It’s such a machine. It runs like clockwork. … Everything’s great!” How do you think Jennifer Lopez will be as an “Idol” judge? Sound off in the comments below! Steven Tyler Explains His ‘American Idol’ Judging Style

‘I take what I’ve grown up with, which is being a very harsh judge of myself, of my vocals, of my band,’ Aerosmith frontman says. By Kara Warner Steven Tyler Photo: Kevin Winter/ Getty Images The “American Idol” season 10 premiere is just a day away, and to celebrate, MTV News has been rolling out our big guns, with “Idol” cheat sheets , breaking news and everything you need to know before Wednesday night’s big opener. On Tuesday (January 18), we had the opportunity to chat with new judge Steven Tyler, by way of a conference call with a handful of curious reporters. The Aerosmith frontman was just as energetic and amusing as he’s been in recent appearances, proving that his presence and commentary on the show will likely be a highlight each week. Of his experience thus far, Tyler said it has been good, adding that his judging style comes from his personal experience in the business. “I don’t take what happened to me this morning or last night or with the band … I don’t take that into judging kids [like] other people might have,” Tyler explained. “I kind of take what I’ve grown up with, which is being a very harsh judge of myself, of my vocals, of my band, and lay that across the talent that comes across my view.” Given that Tyler seems to be enjoying his new position — particularly that he gets to sit next to fellow newbie Jennifer Lopez, who he called “a fox,” — everyone wants to know how long he plans to be on the show. “I have more than a one-year contract,” Tyler revealed. “But as you know, things are what they are. But I have more than a one-year contract. I’ll give you that one.” Although we’re still far from season 11, we also got an early tip for next season’s contestants. Tyler cautioned against auditioning with Aerosmith tunes, specifically “I Don’t Want to Miss a Thing” — unless you can knock it out of the park. “They have to sing it good, you know. They must have sung in the seven weeks [of auditions], they probably got, you know, 15, 16 [performances of] ‘I Don’t Want to Miss a Thing,’ ” Tyler said. “It was hard for me because it always seemed to me when they said they were going to sing it, I knew someone at home was … like, ‘If you sing that song, Tyler will be enamored.’ And when I didn’t like it, I felt a little ill at ease to tell them, ‘You know what? You really didn’t sing it good.’ ” But Tyler said that if we should hear any Aerosmith on the show beyond the tryout rounds, those performances will likely be solid. “If any of them sing it now, remember we are down to 20 great people. So if they did, it would be nothing but good.” Don’t miss our “American Idol” live stream “Judging the Judges: An ‘Idol’ Without Simon,” featuring post-show analysis from Jim Cantiello and special guests, on MTV.com this Wednesday at 10 p.m. ET. ‘American Idol’ Judge Randy Jackson: Sitting In Simon’s Chair Is ‘Weird’

‘I look down the table and I go, ‘Kara? No. Paula? No. Ellen? No. Simon? No. Where am I?’ ‘ Jackson tells MTV News of season 10. By Eric Ditzian, with reporting by Jim Cantiello Randy Jackson Photo: MTV News For nine seasons of “American Idol,” Simon Cowell anchored the judges’ table as a rotating cast of industry personalities cycled in and out. Paula Abdul headed for the exit after eight years, Kara DioGuardi and Ellen DeGeneres came and quickly went, and then Cowell himself officially departed after at least one season in which he seemed to have grown somewhat bored of the competition show. Now Randy Jackson is the last remaining original judge and has commandeered Cowell’s chair at the end of the judges’ table. But with the season 10 set to premiere on Wednesday , he’s still not totally comfortable. “It is a little weird, and sometimes I look down the table and I go, ‘Kara? No. Paula? No. Ellen? No. Simon? No. Where am I?’ ” Jackson told MTV News recently. “American Idol,” he admits, is a vastly transformed show this season. Various rules have been changed, producers talk openly about injecting new vigor into the competition, and two new faces in Jennifer Lopez and Steven Tyler have joined up as judges. “It’s just a different kind of show,” said Jackson. “Simon is irreplaceable. People have been saying, ‘Who’s going to be the mean one?’ Simon is still the mean one.” Yet as much as things will change this season, other elements will remain the same: sometimes the judges will be of one mind about a contestant, and at others their opinions will diverge — perhaps with a quarrel. “Jennifer, Steven and I all agree a lot [and] we disagree a lot,” he said. “You’re going to see all flavors of the rainbow because we all think sort of the same way because we’re music industry professionals.” How do you think the “Idol” judges will do without Simon? Adrianne Curry Naked Sushi for Attention of the Day

The darkest day in my TWITTER History was the day Adrianne Curry told me off for being a disgusting person…I don’t fully remember what she said about me before blocking me, but I do know that it was said between her crying for attention by posting controversial, exhibitionist style pictures hoping someone will notice her useless reality star married to a Brady for attention…and now she’s posting pictures of her doing naked sushi…something I’d be more into if the rankest fish at the table wasn’t her bottom feeding pussy…..and you gotta understand that I love all dirty, bottom feeding pussy, especially when it knows I exist….so I really despise this shit….

Prince Pops Up On ‘The View’

The Purple One gives Justin Bieber advice during a surprise visit to ABC’s daytime gab-fest on Thursday. By Mawuse Ziegbe Prince on “The View” on Thursday Photo: ABC When you’re Prince, you’re pretty much given free rein to stop by wherever you please — even if it’s busting up a daytime TV talk show. The Purple One gave the ladies of ABC’s “The View” an unexpected visit Thursday morning (December 9), when he showed up to gift the gab queens with tickets for his Welcome 2 America Tour dates in New York. The pop legend hung around for a bit, but instead of perhaps giving the ladies a preview of his show by playing a song or two, the “Hot Thing” singer squeezed in at the table for a little “Hot Topics,” the show’s popular opening segment. Coolly walking out in dark, round glasses, a bedazzled sport coat and a single glove, the singer elicited screams from the audience — and caused “View” co-host and Prince mega-fan Sherri Shepherd to nearly keel over — when he randomly strolled onto the set in the middle of the segment. “First of all, these are strange hours for rock stars,” he quipped upon arrival at the 11 a.m. ET broadcast. The singer then explained that he was in New York for his upcoming shows, and pumped up his band “that plays like a jackhammer.” “You gotta come check it out,” he said of the December concerts. The iconic crooner graciously handled the fawning from Shepherd, obliging her with a hug and a “Sherri, I love you.” The ladies also asked Prince about another major fan, Justin Bieber, who once said he wanted to have a career as lengthy as the 52-year-old hitmaker. The superstar gave the teen sensation some sage advice, pushing the importance of staying thoroughly educated about his work. “The key to longevity is to learn every aspect of music that you can, and I hope that he does pick up an instrument and gets a good teacher,” he said. He then prepared to make his exit, saying, “I’mma leave y’all. I haven’t had breakfast yet.” But before he skipped out, Shepherd playfully asked the singer for his glove and made one final request. “I have wanted to make love to you for my whole life,” she pouted. The directness definitely woke up the singer, who sprightly popped up from the table, quipping, “On that note,” and then dropped the mic as he hustled off the set as quickly and as mysteriously as he came. In October, Prince took to Harlem’s Apollo Theater to grandly announce the kickoff of his Welcome 2 America Tour , which is slated to feature many of his talented musician pals like Maceo Parker, Mint Condition, Cassandra Wilson and Janelle Mon
