Gates Foundation invests in Monsanto/ Both will profit at expense of small-scale African farmers

Farmers and civil society organizations around the world are outraged by the recent discovery of further connections between the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation and agribusiness titan Monsanto. Last week, a financial website published the Gates Foundation’s investment portfolio, including 500,000 shares of Monsanto stock with an estimated worth of $23.1 million purchased in the second quarter of 2010 (see the filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission). This marks a substantial increase from its previous holdings, valued at just over $360,000 (see the Foundation’s 2008 990 Form). “The Foundation’s direct investment in Monsanto is problematic on two primary levels,” said Dr. Phil Bereano, University of Washington Professor Emeritus and recognized expert on genetic engineering. “First, Monsanto has a history of blatant disregard for the interests and well-being of small farmers around the world, as well as an appalling environmental track record. The strong connections to Monsanto cast serious doubt on the Foundation’s heavy funding of agricultural development in Africa and purported goal of alleviating poverty and hunger among small-scale farmers. Second, this investment represents an enormous conflict of interests.” Monsanto has already negatively impacted agriculture in African countries. For example, in South Africa in 2009, Monsanto’s genetically modified maize failed to produce kernels and hundreds of farmers were devastated. According to Mariam Mayet, environmental attorney and director of the Africa Centre for Biosafety in Johannesburg, some farmers suffered up to an 80% crop failure. While Monsanto compensated the large-scale farmers to whom it directly sold the faulty product, it gave nothing to the small-scale farmers to whom it had handed out free sachets of seeds. “When the economic power of Gates is coupled with the irresponsibility of Monsanto, the outlook for African smallholders is not very promising,” said Mayet. Monsanto’s aggressive patenting practices have also monopolized control over seed in ways that deny farmers control over their own harvest, going so far as to sue—and bankrupt—farmers for “patent infringement.” News of the Foundation’s recent Monsanto investment has confirmed the misgivings of many farmers and sustainable agriculture advocates in Africa, among them the Kenya Biodiversity Coalition, who commented, “We have long suspected that the founders of AGRA—the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation—had a long and more intimate affair with Monsanto.” Indeed, according to Travis English, researcher with AGRA Watch, “The Foundation’s ownership of Monsanto stock is emblematic of a deeper, more long-standing involvement with the corporation, particularly in Africa.” In 2008, AGRA Watch, a project of the Seattle-based organization Community Alliance for Global Justice, uncovered many linkages between the Foundation’s grantees and Monsanto. For example, some grantees (in particular about 70% of grantees in Kenya) of the Alliance for a Green Revolution in Africa (AGRA)—considered by the Foundation to be its “African face”—work directly with Monsanto on agricultural development projects. Other prominent links include high-level Foundation staff members who were once senior officials for Monsanto, such as Rob Horsch, formerly Monsanto Vice President of International Development Partnerships and current Senior Program Officer of the Gates Agricultural Development Program. Transnational corporations like Monsanto have been key collaborators with the Foundation and AGRA’s grantees in promoting the spread of industrial agriculture on the continent. This model of production relies on expensive inputs such as chemical fertilizers, genetically modified seeds, and herbicides. Though this package represents enticing market development opportunities for the private sector, many civil society organizations contend it will lead to further displacement of farmers from the land, an actual increase in hunger, and migration to already swollen cities unable to provide employment opportunities. In the words of a representative from the Kenya Biodiversity Coalition, “AGRA is poison for our farming systems and livelihoods. Under the philanthropic banner of greening agriculture, AGRA will eventually eat away what little is left of sustainable small-scale farming in Africa.” A 2008 report initiated by the World Bank and the UN, the International Assessment of Agricultural Knowledge, Science and Technology for Development (IAASTD), promotes alternative solutions to the problems of hunger and poverty that emphasize their social and economic roots. The IAASTD concluded that small-scale agroecological farming is more suitable for the third world than the industrial agricultural model favored by Gates and Monsanto. In a summary of the key findings of IAASTD, the Pesticide Action Network North America (PANNA) emphasizes the report’s warning that “continued reliance on simplistic technological fixes—including transgenic crops—will not reduce persistent hunger and poverty and could exacerbate environmental problems and worsen social inequity.” Furthermore, PANNA explains, “The Assessment’s 21 key findings suggest that small-scale agroecological farming may offer one of the best means to feed the hungry while protecting the planet.” The Gates Foundation has been challenged in the past for its questionable investments; in 2007, the L.A. Times exposed the Foundation for investing in its own grantees and for its “holdings in many companies that have failed tests of social responsibility because of environmental lapses, employment discrimination, disregard for worker rights, or unethical practices.” The Times chastised the Foundation for what it called “blind-eye investing,” with at least 41% of its assets invested in “companies that countered the foundation’s charitable goals or socially-concerned philosophy.” cont. added by: JanforGore

Canon 60D: What’s new?

Okay call me a Canon fan for posting this but I’ve been holding the Canon 400D for almost 5 years and I think I need to upgrade from 3 digits to 2 Canon website posted their press release to give us an idea about the Canon 60D. Back then there were some complaints about the 50D (am I being too generous when I say some?) in fact some said that 40D was way better. I have to say though that Canon 7D was a wonderful addition to the category of somewhere being in between Pro and semi-pro. Canon 60d price They’re having the Canon 60D price at around 1099$ (estimated retail price). Oh wow. This is definitely shouting at my wallet to buy it. Canon 60d : first of many According to the press release they have this whole new cool LCD which is the first in Canon EOS history. Think of an LCD with Vari-Angle 3-inch Clear View LCD screen with 1,040,000 dot/VGA resolution plus anti-reflective and smudge-resistant coatings for bright clear viewing from any angle. Yep, that’s it. Then you also have the multi control dial in the quick control dial. Okay I stop nao. There’s a lot of new stuff to note so Imma just show you guys what’s in this thing: The Soft Focus effect filter helps dramatize an image and smooth over shiny reflections. The Grainy Black and White filter can give a different nostalgic perspective to any shot. Canon’s “Toy Camera” filter deliberately adds vignetting and color shift for a creative option when shooting a colorful scene. Users can also make a scene appear like a small-scale model, simulating the look from a tilt-shift lens, with Canon’s Miniature Effect filter, great when shooting any scene from a high vantage point. And there must be tons of other features that can be seen in this awesome camera. So, I guess this is the model I am looking for to level up to a two-digit unit Canon 60D: What’s new? is a post from: Daily World Buzz Continue reading

High-Tech Trash Bins Rat Out Residents Who Refuse to Recycle

Photo via orphanjones Cleveland residents are about to get an extra incentive to recycle — if they don’t, their trash bins will tattletale and they’ll be slapped with a $100 fine. The city is starting a new program that features trash bins embedded with microchips. If the recycling cart isn’t rolled out to the curb on a regular basis, trash collectors are prompted to go through the bins to make sure recyclables are being sorted correctly. If they’re not, the residents will pay for their laziness. … Read the full story on TreeHugger

Egg Recall: National Outbreak Of salmonella

According to the media reports, a national outbreak of salmonella in eggs has sickened hundreds of people since May and appears to be ongoing, experts at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention say. The outbreak has been tracked to in-shell eggs from Wright County Egg in Galt, Iowa, which has launched a recall. The recall was launched Aug. 13. Salmonella can cause fever, abdominal cramps and diarrhea and usually lasts four to seven days. As a statement of Casey Barton Behravesh who is a veterinary epidemiologist with the CDC, the type of salmonella causing the outbreak, salmonella enteritidis, is the most common form. The normal level of laboratory-confirmed cases nationally for this specific type is about 50 cases per week. When that jumped to 200 cases a week in June, public health workers realized they had a problem. It was reported on USAToday.com, the eggs from the company were sold under multiple brand names: Lucerne, Albertson, Mountain Dairy, Ralph’s, Boomsma’s, Sunshine, Hillandale, Trafficanda, Farm Fresh, Shoreland, Lund, Dutch Farms and Kemps. They were distributed nationwide. The recall covers eggs in their shells packed between May 16 and Aug. 13. They come in cartons ranging from six to 18 eggs and are marked with plant numbers P-1026, P-1413 and P-1946. The eggs should be returned for a refund and not consumed. Completely cooking eggs reduces the amount of salmonella bacteria in the eggs. Each case of laboratory-confirmed salmonella usually represents 30 cases that were not reported, public health research shows. So the number of people sickened in this outbreak could be in the thousands. From Caroline Smith DeWaal, food safety director of the Center for Science in the Public Interest, “This certainly has the potential to be a very large outbreak both given the apparent number of reported cases so far and also the fact that many of these eggs may still be in consumer refrigerators.” Further from Casey Barton Behravesh, CDC is not reporting deaths or hospitalizations in the outbreak because it’s difficult to determine if they are related to eggs from Wright County Egg or are part of the expected “background” level of cases from other sources. Food and Drug Administration spokeswoman Patricia El-Hinnawy said that Food and Drug Administration currently has teams on site at Wright County Egg. In other report of Associated Press, State health officials say seven salmonella cases in Minnesota have been linked to a multistate egg recall. The salmonella cases were identified in two restaurant outbreaks in May and in July. Health officials believe the eggs are the likely source. The eggs from Wright County Egg of Galt, Iowa were delivered to food distribution centers and food service companies in eight states, including Minnesota, Wisconsin and Iowa. Minnesota Public Radio reports that for every confirmed salmonella case, state health officials estimate there are 38 unconfirmed cases. China Developing a Train That Will Run at 620 Miles Per Hour

Get ready for some high speed transport action – Chinese researchers are currently developing a vacuum maglev train that they believe will run at speeds up to 620 miles per hour. This just a few years after Japan announced their — then totally awe inspiring — plans for a maglev train that would run at 310 mph. The train will run on magnetic levitation tracks built into vacuum tubes underground and will be sucked along at an average speed of almost 400 miles per hour. What’s the cost for this zippy technology, you ask? A mere $2.95 million more than the current high speed rail for each kilometer of track. Read more: China Developing a Train That Will Run at 620 Miles Per Hour | Inhabitat – Green Design Will Save the World Maglev trains utilize a system of very large magnets to lift and propel train cars. The magnetic system is able to move at high speeds while being quieter and smoother than a traditional wheeled mass transit train. The current world record for speed on a maglev train is 361 miles per hour and was set in Japan in 2003. The Chinese plan to blow this record out of the water by coupling their maglev technology with underground tunnels that will act as vacuums. The most common problem facing high speed transit is air friction that slows train cars down. The Chinese plan to eliminate this problem with their vacuum tunnels and say their trains will not have to compete with air friction while they travel. Researchers say that the trains could be ready for action in ten years. Though this high speed wonder seems like a great idea, the economic cost of the technology is staggering. With the added price tag of the vacuum tunnels to make these trains extra speedy, we’re wondering if the time saved traveling on these record breaking trains will really be worth the impact of their construction. Minus Oil: Where Technology Can Curb Our Consumption

Photo via quapan Our culture is obsessed with technology, and for many people it seems the solution to our environmental conundrums is embedded in the ways we utilize the technology we have to create solutions. To a great degree, technology is what got us into this oil-dependent mess in the first place; still, it can very well be an important component of moving away from oil while maintaining the same degree of global connectivity we currently experience. In three major areas, including communication, transportation and food, we discuss ho… Read the full story on TreeHugger

‘Breaking Dawn, Part 2’ To Be Released November 2012

‘Twilight Saga’ finale avoids glut of summer blockbusters with fall release. By Kara Warner “Twilight” stars Robert Pattinson, Kristen Stewart and Taylor Lautner Photo: John Gress/ Getty Images For better or worse, the end is in sight, Twilighters. Summit Entertainment has announced the official release date for “The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn, Part 2.” The final film adaptation of Stephenie Meyer’s best-selling series is scheduled to open in theaters on November 16, 2012. When Summit revealed that “Breaking Dawn” would be split into two films — with the first film’s release date set for November 18, 2011 #&8212; there was much speculation that the final chapter would drop the following summer. This news puts the second film out almost a full year after Part 1, no doubt creating an excruciating waiting period for the film franchise’s extremely dedicated fans. With no official statement accompanying the news of Part 2’s release date, we, too, can only speculate as to why Summit has chosen to wait a full year between releasing the two films. One likely reason is the already-crowded summer 2012 movie calendar, which has been padded with several other highly anticipated and established franchise films. “The Avengers,” “Madagascar 3” and “Men in Black 3” all open in May; June will deliver a “Star Trek” sequel; the re-booted “Spider-Man” is nestled in the July 4 slot (occupied this year by “Eclipse”), followed closely by another “Ice Age” and a third “Batman.” Now that both films’ release dates are set, there are a few other unresolved “Dawn” issues, namely the MPAA rating and whether director Bill Condon will choose to film the two parts in 3-D. “That decision has yet to be made,” Summit distribution chief Richie Fay told MTV of the rating question last month. “It’s still the source of a discussion.” The 3-D conversation, on the other hand, involves both financial and creative decisions. “There’s certainly a financial part of the discussion,” Ray said. “And yes, there’s a certain amount of technology that has to be considered and accounted for. But it really comes down to the creative folks. “In any of these roundtable conversations, [Summit CEO] Rob Friedman has always been concerned about the ‘Twilight’ patron,” Fay added. “His concern is always the people that come in to see this movie. He doesn’t want to turn them off or offend. That’s why it’s a creative decision. A big factor is the perception of our audience. What are their feelings going to be? If it lends itself to being a better movie because of 3-D, then that’s the technology we’ll use.” What do you think of the “Breaking Dawn, Part 2” release date? How painful will the almost one-year wait be for you? Let us know in the comments!
