Katy Perry Set To Sparkle At Macy’s Fourth Of July Festivities

‘Firework’ singer will be joined by Kenny Chesney on the NBC special, ahead of her ‘Part of Me’ film release. By Jocelyn Vena Katy Perry Photo: MTV News Katy Perry may have declared herself a “Firework” on her 2010 Teenage Dream track, but this Fourth of July she’ll perform alongside of them during the “Macy’s 4th of July Fireworks Spectacular.” The singer will appear on the annual televised party as the nation blows out the candles on another year. She’ll be joined by Kenny Chesney when it all goes down on Independence Day at 9 p.m. ET. In addition to dazzling performances from Katy and Kenny, the show will also include 25 minutes of fireworks magic composed of 40,000 pyrotechnic shells. “NBC is thrilled to have Katy Perry and Kenny Chesney join us in celebrating America’s birthday,” Doug Vaughan, senior vice president of NBC Entertainment’s Special Programs and Late Night, said in a statement about the 36th installment of the annual special taking place in New York City. “These stars’ powerful voices and stage presence will serve as the perfect complement to Macy’s captivating visual artistry.” The performance couldn’t come at a more perfect time for Perry, who will release her 3-D concert film, “Katy Perry: Part of Me,” on July 5. The film is part concert film, part documentary, featuring footage from Perry’s eye-popping California Dreams Tour, as well as candid confessions about her life and vintage video of the pop star. In addition to the film, Perry also recently shot a music video for her Teenage Dream: The Complete Confession track, “Wide Awake.” “It’s the most intimate I’ve ever been,” she told MTV News about the movie . “I mean that in a non-sexual way … I mean it in a vulnerable way. And so I’m not scared of it because I think it’s important for me, and important these days, for people to not think people in my position are perfect and that if they want to achieve this type of dream or achieve a goal that they have to be flawless, they don’t.” Are you excited for Katy Perry’s Fourth of July performance? ‘Catching Fire’: Our Breakdown Of Two New Possible Directors

Bennett Miller and Francis Lawrence have been added to short list to direct ‘Hunger Games’ sequel. By Kevin P. Sullivan Jennifer Lawrence in “Hunger Games” Photo: Lionsgate It is now certainly safe to say that the search for a ” Catching Fire ” director is under way. Not long after ” Hunger Games ” director Gary Ross turned down the job, names of potential replacements began appearing. Last week, a Lionsgate wish list of seven or eight directors included the names David Cronenberg, Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu and Alfonso Cuaron. (We also had a few suggestions of our own.) Now, two more possibilities have stepped forward. The Playlist is reporting that Bennett Miller and Francis Lawrence are also in contention for the gig. Both directors have impressive r

Katy Perry In ‘Love’ With M83; Could He Write Her Next Album?

After spotting Perry at his Coachella set, M83’s Anthony Gonzalez offers to write singer’s next album. By James Montgomery Katy Perry and M83’s Anthony Gonzalez Photo: Getty Images M83’s Anthony Gonzalez has taken his widescreen electronic on the road with the likes of Kings of Leon and the Killers. He’s recorded a double-disc answer to the Smashing Pumpkins’ Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness and has even seen his work show up in the occasional Miley Cyrus song. But after his set at the Coachella festival this past weekend (yes, there were artists besides Holo-Tupac that performed), he’s really dreaming big: He wants to make Katy Perry’s next album. “I think I saw Katy Perry dancing [to] ‘Midnight City’ yesterday night,” Gonzalez wrote on his Facebook page following his performance. “Katy, let me write your next album!” For the uninitiated, “Midnight City” is the fantastic single off M83’s dynamic 2011 double album, Hurry Up, We’re Dreaming, and yes, Perry was right in front when Gonzalez played it (here’s photographic proof ). And following the performance, Perry tweeted , “M83 ONLY.” But does any of that mean a collaboration between the two might be in the works? We’re not sure, but when MTV News sat down with Perry last month in London — for the premiere of her “Part of Me” video — we asked her to name her current favorite artists, and she definitely let it be known that M83 was at the top of her playlist. “I’ve been listening to, well, I guess it would have to be M83’s last record, this past record,” she said, before singing a few bars of “City.” “I think I’m going to see him at Coachella. Oh man, I’m so there. I love it so much.” Of course, she didn’t stop there — turns out, Perry’s also fallen under the spell of Bj

Madonna At #1 Again With MDNA

Madge’s 12th studio album sells 359,000 copies, giving singer her fifth straight #1. By Gil Kaufman Madonna Photo: Jeff Kravitz/ FilmMagic Madonna will retain her claim to the pop throne next week when her 12th studio album, MDNA, debuts at #1 on the Billboard 200 chart. This will be the singer’s fifth straight #1 album, and its sales of 359,000 were more than enough to outpace the #2 debut from fellow veteran Lionel Richie . Richie marks a return to the upper reaches of the charts with his hook-up with country artists on Tuskegee, which sold 199,000 copies, according to figures provided by Nielsen SoundScan. With her latest chart-topper, Madonna, 53, joins Barbra Streisand as the only woman to top the Billboard albums chart at least eight times; Streisand holds the record with a total of nine #1 albums. Two seasoned rock bands also debut in the top 10, with Shinedown hitting #4 with Amaryllis (106,000) and the Used returning to the charts at #8 with Vulnerable (32,000). The rest of the top 10: Adele , 21 (#3, 121,000), “Hunger Games” soundtrack (#5, 64,000), One Direction , Up All Night (#6, 46,000), the deluxe version of Katy Perry ‘s Teenage Dream (#7, 33,000), Bruce Springsteen , Wrecking Ball (#9, 28,000) and NOW 41 (#10, 25,000). The week after they debuted at #3, the Shins drop 11 spots to #14 as business for Port of Morrow dipped by 71 percent to 22,000. Meanwhile, noisemeisters the Mars Volta land at #15 with their latest, Noctourniquet (21,000). All-American Rejects bop in at #18 with Kids in the Street (18,000), and last season’s “American Idol” winner, Scotty McCreery , got a big boost after appearing on the show last week, sending his debut, Clear as Day, up 46 spots to #21 as sales picked up by 172 percent to 16,000. Look for a new #1 next week as Nicki Minaj ‘s Pink Friday: Roman Reloaded crashes the charts. Related Artists Madonna

Katy Perry’s ‘Part Of Me’ Trailer: Follow Your Dreams

Sneak peek of upcoming 3-D concert movie shows Katy’s ups and downs on the road to superstardom. By Kara Warner Katy Perry in the “Katy Perry: Part of Me 3D” trailer Photo: Paramount Katy Perry has proven to be an expert tease in offering up details about her highly anticipated big-screen debut in “Katy Perry: Part of Me.” But on Tuesday (April 3), we finally got a glimpse of what to expect via the first official trailer . The nearly two-minute teaser opens with a shot of Perry onstage, with her otherworldly “E.T.” playing in the background, followed by quick cuts to footage of her Candy Land-esque California Dreams Tour and a voice-over about her meteoric rise to fame. “Katy’s just an explosion. She just keeps getting bigger and bigger and bigger,” a man says in one testimonial, which plays behind flashes of her impressive statistics — the “first female to have five #1 singles on one album” — interspersed with scenes from her music videos for “California Gurls,” “Waking Up in Vegas” and “Teenage Dream.” “It’s always about the challenge,” another man says, with behind-the-scenes footage of Perry rehearsing and getting fitted for costumes playing. “What are people saying she can’t do? That’s what she does next. Every song has something to do with her life.” “She outworks everyone,” another friend says. “I honestly don’t know how she does it.” As headlines of Perry’s divorce flash onscreen, “E.T.” fades away and we hear the opening notes of “Firework,” which provides the background music for scenes and interviews about Perry’s religious childhood, her struggles in being signed to different labels and not being successful and ultimately how she powered through and kept believing in herself to become the superstar she is today. The end of the trailer is a mash-up of behind-the-scenes images from her very colorful concert tour and countless interactions with happy fans. “If you have a dream, you’re going to go on a journey to fulfill that dream,” Perry says as the trailer fades to black. Perry recently told MTV News that the movie is a fitting end to her adventure in promoting and touring for her Teenage Dream album. “It’s closing the chapter on Teenage Dream, but it’s giving you such an inside perspective,” Perry said when asked what fans will get out of the movie-going experience this summer. “This film, you’re going to see it from my best friend/buddy perspective, you’re going to see exactly what I mean and feel and think about everything.” The recent Kids’ Choice Award winner promised that while there will be eye-catching 3-D sequences, they won’t be cheap tricks. “Listen, I’ve [worked on] most of this film for a very long time and the word ‘cheap’ was not in the vocabulary,” she said. “But, hello, it’s 3-D. You’re going to get hit with a lot of sh–.” For young Hollywood news, fashion and “Twilight” updates around the clock, visit HollywoodCrush.MTV.com . Katy Perry’s ‘Part Of Me’ Video Depicts ‘Affirmation Of Strength’

Singer opens up about shooting video at Camp Pendleton Marine Corps base on ‘MTV First: Katy Perry.’ By Jocelyn Vena, with reporting by James Montgomery Katy Perry Photo: MTV News Katy Perry takes on a whole new role in her new “Part of Me” video. In it, she plays a woman who joins the Marines following her breakup with her boyfriend. While Perry is usually pretty soft and feminine in her clips, this video shows another rougher, tougher side of the superstar — running through the mud and wearing a uniform and face paint. And that was her intention. “Well, I think that everybody can see that I love to take chances with my videos, and also have a lot of fun,” she told MTV News when she premiered the Ben Mor-directed video on “MTV First: Katy Perry” Wednesday night (March 21). If the video seems a bit hard for the singer who previously brought us candy-coated imagery and whipped-cream-spewing bras, then “mission accomplished.” “It’s an affirmation of strength, so I wanted to go the strongest route I ever could,” she explained. “Literally, I was like, ‘I’m gonna join the service. I’m gonna join the Marines.’ We used only Marines. … For three days, I was a wannabe Marine, which was so difficult.” The video was shot over several days in February at the Camp Pendleton Marine Corps base in Oceanside, California. And for Katy it was all about fully experiencing life as a Marine in boot camp. “Those people work hard and work out. I learned how to flip someone. I learned how to flip them on their back. I learned how to wrestle underwater,” she said about her training for the video, which also includes some boot camp footage. The singer knew that authenticity would be important. “I just love it and I think people really respond to it,” she said. “People can catch the BS … and I just wanted to really go for it.” “Part of Me” is the lead single off Perry’s Teenage Dream: The Complete Confection, out March 26. Now, while it’s hard to imagine any teen girl fighting with his logic, Bieber makes his plea on the track by promising her fondue dates by the fire and trips around the world. Bieber teased part of the song in his Complex cover story , but now he is providing it to his fans in full. Believe will drop

Katy Perry Calls Rihanna Duet Aspirations ‘Very Genuine’

Singer hopes to make ‘brave’ track with her pal, she says in ‘MTV First,’ airing tonight at 7:23 p.m. ET, followed by MTV.com Q&A. By Jocelyn Vena, with reporting by James Montgomery Katy Perry and Rihanna Photo: Lester Cohen/WireImage Katy Perry really wants to hook up with Rihanna , on a song at least. The two have teased fans for quite some time about getting together and making a track to please both the Katy Cats and the Rihanna Navy. When MTV News sat down with Katy during “MTV First: Katy Perry” — airing Wednesday (March 21) at 7:23 p.m. ET on MTV, followed by a 30-minute chat on MTV.com — the singer opened up about the pressure she feels to make the collaboration happen. “I’ve always wanted to and she’s always wanted to and that’s very genuine,” she explained. “We’re not just shooting the sh–. We’re not, like, just kind of beating around the bush. But really we want to.” Here is the catch. “It’s just that I think it’s gotten to such a head that if we do something that’s not the greatest, it’s going to be so anticlimactic,” she said. “So we’ve already thought about it.” Perry then referred to a certain Beyonc

Katy Perry Teases Teenage Dream Special Edition With Song Previews

Snippets of ‘Dressin’ Up’ and ‘Wide Awake’ give fans taste of the March 27 release. By Jocelyn Vena Katy Perry’s Teenage Dream: The Complete Confection Photo: Jive is set to release Teenage Dream: The Complete Confection later this month, and in two new teases , the singer is displaying her signature sense of sass. Mid-tempo track “Wide Awake” is big and full of emotion. The song seems to pick up where her single “Part of Me” left off. While “Part” is a kiss-off, “Wide Awake” is all about the empowerment one feels after letting go of someone. “I’m wide awake, not losing any sleep/ I picked up every piece, and landed on my feet/ I’m wide awake, need nothing to complete myself,” she sings. “I’m wide awake, I am born again/ Out of the lion’s den, I don’t have to pretend/ And it’s too late, the story’s over now/ The end.” The other teased track, “Dressin’ Up,” is on the other end of the spectrum. All Katy feels on the song is sexy and sexed up. Produced by Tricky Stewart, it’s a synthy, crunchy, grinding dance song, on which she sings, “Oh boy tell me your fantasy/ Tonight’s the night/ Tonight I’m gonna come alive/ Make you forget about your nine to five/ Are you ready for your blood to rise/ Tonight’s the night I’m dressin’ up for you.” “This song is really special,” Stewart told MTV News about the track. “It definitely fits. It’s right there in what her sensibilities are as a musician and a songwriter. She doesn’t change much. She has a very keen musical taste. It’ll be really good.” The songs on the album, which drops on March 27, are an extension of 2010’s Teenage Dream, but feel fresh enough to stand on their own as well. “With Teenage Dream, the reasons why I wanted to put out this special edition, Complete Confection, is two major reasons for me: One, I’m doing it mostly for the hard-core fans because they always love all the extras,” Perry told MTV News earlier this month. “The second reason I wanted to do it is because it’s my one last push, to push that person that is on the precipice of becoming a fan,” she continued. “They’re thinking to themselves, ‘I bought four or five singles, maybe I should actually complete my album and now I should really complete my album because I’m gonna get 19 songs for a really great price.’ I think it’s like a bargain and I’m doing it for my fans.” Related Videos MTV News Extended Play: Katy Perry Related Artists Katy Perry
