Katy Perry’s Teenage Dream: Complete Confection For ‘Hard-Core Fans’

‘I will close the book on Teenage Dream soon, but [ Complete Confection ] just felt really organic,’ Perry tells MTV News. By Christina Garibaldi Katy Perry Photo: Jeff Bottari/ Getty Images Katy Perry may already be thinking of what direction she will take on her next album, but before she does that, she wanted to do something special for her fans. On March 26, Perry will release Teenage Dream: The Complete Confection , which features all of her songs from her chart-topping album Teenage Dream plus some bonus tracks. “With Teenage Dream, the reasons why I wanted to put out this special edition, Complete Confection, is two major reasons for me: One, I’m doing it mostly for the hard-core fans because they always love all the extras,” Perry told MTV News in Los Angeles. “The second reason I wanted to do it is because it’s my one last push, to push that person that is on the precipice of becoming a fan. They’re thinking to themselves, ‘I bought four or five singles, maybe I should actually complete my album and now I should really complete my album because I’m gonna get 19 songs for a really great price.’ I think it’s like a bargain and I’m doing it for my fans.” Perry revealed that she wrote several songs that didn’t make the cut on Dream, which is why Confection will feature not only Perry’s new hit single “Part of Me” but several other songs, including the Tricky Stewart-produced track “Dressing Up.” “This song is really special. It’s called ‘Dressing Up,’ so it’s going to be a big record,” Stewart told MTV News in October. “It definitely fits. It’s right there in what her sensibilities are as a musician and a songwriter. She doesn’t change much. She has a very keen musical taste. It’ll be really good.” Even though there are several new tracks on Confection, Perry says she is not considering this a whole new album. “I’m really excited and I’m not putting it out there as, like, another album — you know how you find different artists do their version, like eight songs or something. I’m am ready to make a new record, and I will close the book on Teenage Dream soon, but [ Complete Confection ] just felt really organic.” Are you excited for Teenage Dream: The Complete Confection ? Katy Perry’s ‘Part Of Me’ Makes History With #1 Debut

Song’s #1 bow is just the 20th in the 53-year history of the Billboard Hot 100 chart. By James Montgomery Katy Perry Photo: Jeff Bottari/ Getty Images Katy Perry is back in a familiar place with her brand-new single: the top of the Billboard charts. After performing “Part of Me” — the first single off the deluxe reissue of her Teenage Dream album — at the 54th Grammy Awards, Perry sat back and watched as the song debuted at #1 on Billboard ‘s Hot 100, making it just the 20th track in the chart’s 53-year history to bow in the top slot. According to Billboard, Perry joins a list of stars that includes Michael Jackson, Mariah Carey, Whitney Houston, Britney Spears and Eminem (not to mention a host of former “American Idol” champions) who have all accomplished the feat — the last was Lady Gaga, whose “Born This Way” opened at #1 nearly one year ago. In the process, Perry has notched her seventh career Hot 100 #1. “Part of Me” also rocketed to #1 on the Digital Songs chart, racking up more than 411,000 downloads, according to Nielsen SoundScan. That’s a career-best week for Perry, and is the highest opening number for any artist since Gaga sold more than 448,000 downloads of “Born This Way” last year. Perry wasn’t the only artist to benefit from the post-Grammy bounce; Adele, who, as you might have heard, did pretty well at the show , not only sold an astonishing (and record-setting) 730,000 copies of her 21 album last week, but becomes the first female artist in Hot 100 history to have three solo titles in the Top 10: “Set Fire to the Rain” at #2, “Rolling in the Deep” at #5 and “Someone Like You” at #7. Nicki Minaj and Chris Brown, who both received, uh, mixed reviews for their Grammy-night performances, also found their way into the Top 10: Minaj’s “Starships” is in at #9, followed by Brown’s “Turn up the Music,” which lands at #10. Katy Perry Spotted Shooting New Video On Military Base

‘Part of Me’ singer was seen wearing Army fatigues on set in California. By Jocelyn Vena Katy Perry Photo: Getty Images Katy Perry may be deep in shooting the video for her latest single, “Part of Me.” The singer was spotted wearing a military uniform on the set of something this week. In several photos that made their way online, Perry dons a cropped black wig and fatigues. One shot is of her standing next to male soldiers. Another features her is of her standing in a store. The last photo is of her in a pool with a soldier (still wearing the army garb). According to Perez Hilton , she is shooting the military-themed video at Marine Corps base Camp Pendleton in Oceanside, California. A rep for the base could not confirm reports that she is shooting there when contacted by MTV News. Meanwhile, her rep had not responded to our request for comment by press time. Earlier this week, Perry teased that she was looking forward to hitting the set for the “Part of Me” video. “Holy power of the Grammy’s, Part Of Me is already top 10 on itunes! U guys are killing it! NICE! Can’t wait to shoot this video!” she tweeted on Monday, one day after she debuted the song at the Grammys . The Teenage Dream: Complete Confection song is a bit darker than most Perry fans might be used to. The song is about the dissolution of a relationship, during which Perry sings scathing lines like “Days like this I want to drive away/ Pack bags and watch your shadow fade/ You chewed me up and spit me out like I was poison in your mouth/ You took my life, you drank me down/ But that was then and this is now.” And in what has been taken as a jab at her former hubby, Russell Brand, she adds, “You can keep the diamond ring/ It don’t mean nothing anyway.” What did you think of Katy Perry’s Grammys performance? Nicki Minaj Drops Fist-Pumping ‘Starships’ Single

‘There was so much love surrounding the making of the song,’ she says about Roman Reloaded track. By Jocelyn Vena Nicki Minaj Photo: Jason Merritt/Getty Images Nicki Minaj channels her inner pop princess for her just-released single “Starships.” The fist-pumping song dropped on Tuesday (February 14), and it’s club-ready and poised for crossover success. Thanks to its bouncy beat, Minaj’s sing-songy chorus and producer RedOne’s eye for Euro house-influenced pop music, Minaj may have a new “Super Bass.” It’s a blast of pop goodness in which Nicki raps and sings about partying and doing what feels good for you. The song is also full of signature Minaj sass and bravado. “Starships were meant to fly/ Hands up and touch the sky/ Can’t stop ’cause we’re so high/ Let’s do this one more time,” she declares on the feel-good chorus, before it repeats and evolves to a smashing, dance-floor-busting grind of beats, shouts and noises that are certain to get her Barbz on the floor. Minaj shines like a pop star the likes of Britney Spears, Katy Perry and Jennifer Lopez on the genre-busting track. But the song is also signature RedOne thanks to his keen ear for world music. That influence is felt on the song’s breakdowns, which recall smashes he’s made for J.Lo and Enrique Iglesias. “There was so much love surrounding the making of the song, because RedOne is just so sweet to work with,” Minaj told Ryan Seacrest . “He just sent me that one day and he said, ‘Hey, I got something for you!’ I was like ‘You got to be kidding me, right?’ I went to the studio and started writing … scratch that … I didn’t even write the first verse! That was just me mumbling and just saying the first thing that came to my head, and we recorded it, because I just felt like, let’s go to the beach … let’s go get away. It was just so good. It feels good!” “Starship” is the latest track to get a preview before Nicki drops Pink Friday: Roman Reloaded on April 1. On Sunday she gave fans an over-the-top taste of “Roman Holiday” when she performed it during the Grammy Awards . During the interview with Seacrest, Minaj shared that Reloaded will focus on the many sides of Nicki — and it’s clear “Starships” shows her pop side. “I’ve never had this much fun recording music in my life. My first album, I was very guarded,” she said. “I felt like I was making music to please everyone else. I had to be politically correct, but this album I am just creating music, and there’s such a big difference. Literally, in the studio we were cracking up laughing, having fun and enjoying ourselves. The music itself, you’re going to get every side that I’ve ever shown and then a little bit extra. I’ve tried to make it very, very balanced, because I don’t ever want to be boxed in, and that’s always what drives me. So I made a very diverse album.” Related Artists Nicki Minaj

Drake, Rihanna Get ‘Super Close’ In ‘Take Care’ Video

‘It’s not narrative at all, and it involves animals,’ director Yoann Lemoine tells MTV News of new clip. By Tomika L. Anderson Rihanna and Drake Photo: NBAE/Getty Images Capturing the chemistry between Drake and Rihanna on the set of their new video wasn’t very hard, the director of the clip, Yoann Lemoine, told MTV News. The video for “Take Care” was shot during the Super Bowl. “They seemed to be super close and that’s what I wanted for the video,” Lemoine, best known for directing Katy Perry’s “Teenage Dream,” Taylor Swift’s “Back to December” and Mystery Jet’s “Dreaming of Another World,” told us. “They fit together pretty well so it was just easy.” Lemoine said the three-day shoot — which took place in a studio as well as a park — had a “very minimal” and “mellow” vibe, even though the track itself is decidedly more upbeat. “Visually, it’s a very humble video … it’s not crazy,” the alternative indie musician who also goes by the stage name Woodkid said. “It’s actually the most indie video I’ve done my whole life. It’s probably the most famous artists, and they were so open to a project that was so minimal.” “There’s a lot of space in the video and I wanted the visuals to pay tribute to that,” he continued. “It pays tribute to nature. When I listened to the track, I was seeing a landscape … involving animals and massive landscapes. I won’t say too much, but it’s very surprising that there are very few elements in it. It’s very simple but there’s this big sense of emptiness in it. It’s not narrative at all, and it involves animals.” The French filmmaker does not know when the video will air, but he did say that the editing process is going in a “very good direction.” Lemoine — who tweeted a picture of himself with the rap-and-R&B duo last week — admitted that they all watched the Super Bowl on the set between takes, but that there weren’t very many other distractions. “There’s something very minimal and very delicate [about it] in a way,” he added. “And it was very symbolic too.” Related Artists Drake Rihanna

Fabolous, Maino To Kick Off 2012 ‘RapFix Live’

Skillz will also swing through to perform his ‘2011 Rap-Up’ on Wednesday at 4 p.m. ET on MTV.com. By Rob Markman Fabolous and Sway on “RapFix Live” in September, 2010 Photo: Jonathan Goldner / MTV News It’s 2012 and “RapFix Live” returns to kick off the new year with Brooklyn’s own Fabolous on Wednesday at 4 p.m. ET. “RapFix Live” closed out 2011 by crowning Machine Gun Kelly our Hottest Breakthrough MC of the year as voted by fans. Fab also ended the year in grand fashion when he released his murderous mixtape There Is No Competition III: Death Comes in 3s on Christmas Day. It was his mixtape grind with DJ Clue that made Fabolous a rap force to be reckoned with in the late 1990s, but Loso has continually grown throughout his career and is one of hip-hop’s most successful and celebrated MCs. Not only does Loso remain one of the game’s rawest rappers, he is also one of its biggest hitmakers thanks to singles like 2003’s “Can’t Let You Go,” 2007’s “Make Me Better” and “Throw It in the Bag” from his last album, Loso’s Way . With TINC III once again cementing his position in the streets, Fab is back in the studio working on his next solo LP, Loso’s Way 2 . ” Loso’s Way 2 is a work-in-process. I put a lot in my mixtapes, but I definitely put a lot into my albums as well,” Fab told MTV News in December, referencing the DJ Drama-helmed TINC III and the upcoming album. “I know a lot of people like mixtape Fab, and albums, to me, you’re speaking to a broader audience sometimes. I take that at hand. I guess everybody doesn’t see that.” Loso has also seen his private life come under the microscope now that his son’s mother, Emily Bustamante, is a star on VH1’s juicy reality show “Love & Hip Hop.” Fab, however, isn’t a fan. “It’s just not my cup of tea,” Fabolous told New York radio host Angie Martinez on her Hot 97 show earlier this month. “It’s one side of what’s going on. I don’t bash it, but I’m not really in support of it, either. I don’t think it depicts me the way I am. It just depicts a one-sided version of what’s going on.” Fab won’t be the only guest this week on “RapFix Live.” Every year since 2002, Virginia MC Skillz drops a lyrical year in review — it has become an annual hip-hop tradition. On Wednesday, the “Are You That Somebody” lyricist will perform his “2011 Rap-Up.” Brooklyn MC Maino has also started a yearly tradition of his own. Three years ago, the “Hi Hater” rapper released “2009 Predictions.” Last year he looked into his crystal ball and dropped “2011 Predictions,” in which he successfully guessed that Lindsay Lohan would have relapsing bouts with alcohol, the Throne would sell over a million records, and Floyd Mayweather and Manny Pacquiao would go another year without fighting in what would be the most anticipated boxing match in years. Catch Fabolous and Skillz on “RapFix Live” Wednesday at 4 p.m. ET on MTV.com, and be sure to join the Twitter conversation using the hashtag #RapFixLive. Katy Perry: What’s Next After Russell Brand?

Pop star has plenty to keep her busy, between her music and budding acting career. By Jocelyn Vena Katy Perry Photo: Getty Images Katy Perry is kicking off 2012 a single girl. Over the holiday weekend, news broke that Russell Brand had filed for divorce after a year of marriage with the pop star. And while Perry has remained low-key since the split, she is amping up for what is sure to be another busy year. Perry hasn’t been spotted in public since Friday’s breakup announcement, but she did make some non-relationship-related headlines Tuesday (January 3) when a demo version of the Jessie James track “Bullet” hit the Net; Perry co-wrote the sassy track for the singer’s 2009 album. The singer has two shows later this month — one scheduled for January 19 in Jakarta, Indonesia, and another January 22 in the Philippines — as part of her California Dreams Tour. Come February, Perry is set to appear at the Grammys, where she is up for two awards, including Record of the Year and Best Pop Solo Performance for “Firework.” It’s been nearly two years since Perry’s megahit Teenage Dream album dropped. While no word has come down about new music from the star, when MTV News spoke to producer Tricky Stewart , he hinted that Perry was working on a new release of some older material, including a track called “Dressing Up.” “Katy and I went into [the studio] just to address some issues with records that we had done in the past that didn’t end up going on Teenage Dream, ” he told MTV News about the top-secret project. “So we are in the process of just listening and freshening up things and getting ready for something special she has going on.” Perry hasn’t announced plans to tackle any more acting roles, but in 2011, she made fans laugh on the big screen as the voice of Smurfette in “The Smurfs” and as the host of “Saturday Night Live” in December, teasing a possible second career in film and TV. Since the split made headlines, Perry has not addressed the divorce . However, Brand said in a statement, “Sadly, Katy and I are ending our marriage. I will always adore her and I know we’ll remain friends.” Related Photos Lovebirds: Katy Perry And Russell Brand Related Artists Katy Perry

Katy Perry Is MTV’s Artist Of The Year!

Pop star made history in 2011 with chart-topping hits that empowered fans. By Jocelyn Vena Katy Perry Photo: Getty Images In 2011, no one shined as brightly as Katy Perry. It’s hard to think back on the past 12 months without getting one of her songs stuck in your head. As MTV’s Artist of the Year , Katy found success by unapologetically being herself. She sang about aliens, her foggy memories of house parties, lost love, true love, being yourself and everything in between. It’s easy for fans to connect to Perry and her music: She’s an open book. And in 2011, she turned a few more pages. Riding high off the success of 2010’s Teenage Dream, Perry didn’t rest on her laurels. Instead, she set the bar even higher by hitting the road on the California Dreams Tour, where night after night, decked out in candy-colored clothes, she belted out her greatest hits and empowered her fans with tracks like “Firework.” That anthem, originally released late last year, became so ubiquitous this year that it finds itself at #10 on MTV’s Best Songs of 2011 list. Visually, she always wanted to keep us guessing. She continually made music videos that were cinematic, tickling our funny bones at times (see: “Last Friday Night (T.G.I.F.)” ) and leaving us nostalgic at others (see: “The One That Got Away” ). In August, she took home the VMA for Video of the Year for — you guessed it — “Firework.” Perry told the audience at the show, “I feel like I am doing something right when I sing that song. So thanks to everyone who helped to create it.” That same night, she also nabbed the Moonman for Best Collaboration for her Kanye West-assisted track, “E.T.” Perry is one of the new millennium’s biggest pop stars, and she matched some of pop’s greatest icons on the charts this year. She tied Billboard records previously held by Michael Jackson and later one held by Janet Jackson and George Michael by having so many hit singles off one album. But we weren’t just talking about Perry’s music this year. She made us giggle with an LOL-worthy hosting stint on “SNL” and made her big-screen debut voicing the iconic Smurfette in “The Smurfs.” Offscreen, she’s proved to be the kind of girl that can laugh off rumors that she’s pregnant and getting divorced . She’s loud, cool and a real girl’s girl. It’s no easy task to sum up Katy Perry’s year. And all those accomplishments make it clear that she’s our girl. What would 2011 have been without Katy? It’s a 2011 we want nothing to do with. Stick with MTV as we count down the Best of 2011 , including the top Artists , Songs , Live Performances and EDM Artists of the year.
