Usher’s ‘OMG’ Gets Celeb Endorsement As Song Of The Year

‘It’s undeniable,’ Travie McCoy says of the track that topped MTV News’ Top 25 Songs of 2010. By Jocelyn Vena Usher Photo: Getty Images 2010 had some great jams, and all week, MTV News has been counting down some of its best. Everything from Lady Gaga’s “Telephone” and Rick Ross’ “B.M.F. (Blowin’ Money Fast)” to two of Kanye’s West’s killer My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy tracks, “Power” and “Runaway,” made the top 10. But it was Usher’s bombastic party jam “OMG” that rose to the top and came in at #1. So what made that song such a party anthem? “Oh my God! That’s exactly what I would say! Oh my God!” Pauly D joked about 2010’s top party jam. “Dope, dope track. I love playing it. The crowd goes crazy when I play it. Usher’s the man!” Travie McCoy added: “It’s a great song. It’s undeniable, you know what I mean?” “Dancing With the Stars” pro Lacey Schwimmer admitted that “OMG” was the track that got dancers, both professional and amateur, on the dance floor. “You guys got a great dance anthem,” she said. “So be prepared for people who do not know how to dance just going to town!” Producer Alex Da Kid gave props to will.i.am for the song’s epic beat. “I love ‘OMG.’ I think it’s definitely something different for Usher,” he said. “And it still has all the dance performance elements Usher’s known for, but it’s something slightly different and done in a will.i.am kind of way, and it’s different and that’s why it connected to so many different people. It’s a great song.” Celebrities also weighed in on their favorite jams of 2010 , choosing everything from Katy Perry’s “Teenage Dream” and Willow Smith’s “Whip My Hair” to B.o.B and Hayley Williams’ “Airplanes.” Why did you love “OMG” in 2010? Singer takes the stage with ‘Glee’ guest star at Trevor Project fundraiser Sunday night. By Jocelyn Vena Katy Perry and Darren Criss Photo: Angela Weiss/ Toby Canham/ Getty Images While Katy Perry and “Glee” guest star Darren Criss have both had chart success with Perry’s “Teenage Dream,” the two had yet to perform the track together. Criss originally performed the tune on the hit Fox show, while Perry released it earlier this year as the second single from her album of the same name. The two finally took the stage together for the first time at the Trevor LIVE annual fundraising event held at the Hollywood Palladium on Sunday night. Criss, dressed in a suit, was performing the track with the show’s Dalton Academy Warblers, when Perry, dressed in a sequin dress, hit the stage to belt out the last bit of the tune. Footage of the performance hit the Net shortly after the event. Other performances for the night included a spoken-word number from Queen Latifah as well as the Hollywood Bowl cast of “Rent” singing “Seasons of Love” and “Will I.” Kathy Griffin was honored by “Glee” star Jane Lynch for donating her paycheck from an L.A.-area stand-up gig to the Trevor Project, a nonprofit organization that offers suicide-prevention services to lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender youth. Some of the other names in attendance included Neil Patrick Harris, Jesse Tyler Ferguson, Rashida Jones, David Arquette, Sarah Silverman, Taye Diggs, Idina Menzel, Kate Walsh, Wayne Brady, Justin Long, Joe Manganiello, Kristin Davis, Brittany Snow, Amy Poehler, Will Arnett, Josh Duhamel, Anna Kendrick, James Marsden and Jessica Alba. “She’s been really sweet,” Criss said of Perry’s support after his “Teenage Dream” performance on “Glee.” ” … It’s a great tune. I really lucked out that I got to sing that song. I mean, you’ve gotta sing what they give you.” Whose version of “Teenage Dream” do you prefer: Katy’s or Darren’s? Not only did the newlywed get to open the “Grammy Nominations Concert Live!” show with her mega-hit “California Gurls,” she also picked up a handful of nominations. Four of them, actually, including the biggie, Album of the Year, for Teenage Dream . “WOW,” was her ecstatic Twitter reaction after the Grammy nods were announced. “It’s an AMAZING honor to be nominated & recognized by my other hard working peers tonight. So happy that I trusted my gut w/ this record.” Perry’s second single this year, “Teenage Dream,” also got a nod in the Best Female Pop Vocal Performance. She’ll also face off against fellow divas Lady Gaga and Susan Boyle in the Best Pop Vocal Album category. Matt Rutler and Christina Aguilera: Getting Serious?

Bad news for concerned friends of Christina Aguilera: things are getting serious between the singer and production assistant/musician Matt Rutler. Those close to Aguilera are reportedly worried that she’s rebounding from her divorce with the wrong man , but that hasn’t stopped this relationship from progressing. The couple enjoyed an evening out at the Abbey in West Hollywood on November 24, where a witness says the pair drank, danced and “Christina was in a great mood and seemed very into Matt.” From there, sources tell People that Aguilera and Rutler flew to New York for the weekend, as the former left son Max with his father, Jordan Bratman. “This is the first Thanksgiving she was without Max,” said an insider. “It was really hard for her and she was feeling sad, so she decided to go to the East Coast with Matt and a group of friends.” The trip cross country took these two to Rhode Island, where Aguilera took a major step in meeting Rutler’s mother. Does these mean wedding bells might actually be on the way already? Not so fast, says a friend: “They’re still getting to know each other better.” Christina met Matthew on the set of Burlesque , where he worked as a production assistant and she worked as one of the leads in the movie alongside Cher. Russell Brand Nixed Katy Perry-John Mayer Hookup!

Apparently John Mayer doesn’t always get the girl. Thank goodness. As if Katy Perry and Russell Brand weren’t awesome enough, the zany British comic apparently rescued her from J-Mayer’s clutches at the last second! According to E! News, John and Katy were well on their way to sexy coupledom when Russell intercepted her at the 2009 VMAs and snagged KP for himself. As celebrity love triangles go, this one worked out for the best. It was love at first sight at the awards show. But just one night earlier, Perry and the douchebag met in person after weeks of trading flirty tweets and texts. “They’d never met in person, and she went to meet him there after she was at a Jay-Z concert at Madison Square Garden,” a source close to Mayer reports. “John thought she was so hot and fun and was into her,” the insider says . “They were flirty and all over each other at the bar, they really liked each other.” “They were dancing and it was on.” They stayed at the bar until late, leaving only moments apart from the downtown bar, conveniently just around the corner from Mayer’s love nest. Gag . The next day, which happened to be the VMAs, the two traded more flirty texts. But before their relationship could blossom any further, enter Brand. As luck would have it, Russell, who was hosting the awards, was instantly taken by the “Teenage Dream” singer, openly admiring her from the stage. She was equally smitten. The rest is history.

‘Glee’ Guest Star Darren Criss Finally Meets Katy Perry

‘She’s very sweet,’ Criss said of ‘Teenage Dream’ songstress By Amy Wilkinson, additional reporting by James Montgomery Darren Criss Photo: MTV News Ever since “Glee” guest star Darren Criss warbled Katy Perry’s track “Teenage Dream” on the series’ Nov. 9 episode “Never Been Kissed,” he and Perry have been directing enthusiastic accolades at one another through the press. The pair finally had the first in-person meeting of their “mutual admiration society” at Sunday’s American Music Awards, and Criss left singing Perry’s praises once again. “[I met Perry] very, very quickly,” Criss told MTV News while walking the red carpet at Rolling Stone ‘s post-AMA party. “It was cool. She’s very sweet.” Following Criss’ debut on the Fox musical series earlier this month, Perry shared her compliments via Twitter, writing, “Oh…My…Gosh… this just brought a sweet tear to my eye! Teenage Dream on GLEE makes my heart go WEEEEE!” She later told “Access Hollywood” , “He’s amazing! I love when any of my songs are remixed or interpreted differently. I just love that. I really welcome a creative mind to anything.” Criss was flattered by Perry’s praise, telling MTV News last week the feelings were indeed mutual. “Katy makes my heart ‘go weeeee,’ ” he said. Criss has been quick to credit Perry and the track’s other writers and producers — Dr. Luke, Ben Levin, Bonnie McKee and Max Martin — with the single’s success (it reached #1 on the digital downloads chart last week, a first for a “Glee” single). “I’m forever in [Katy’s] debt, basically,” Criss said. “She’s been very supportive about the whole thing. She’s a cool chick, and I’m a big fan.” What did you think of Criss’ performance of “Teenage Dream” on “Glee?” Tell us in the comments! Related Artists Katy Perry

‘Glee’ Guest Darren Criss Hits #1 With ‘Teenage Dream’

Katy Perry loves rendition, the first ‘Glee’ single to top digital sales chart. By Amy Wilkinson Don’t pinch yourself, because this isn’t a dream: With 214,000 tracks sold, “Glee” guest star Darren Criss has scored a #1 hit with his rendition of Katy Perry’s “Teenage Dream,” which debuted at the top of the digital sales chart this week — the first “Glee” single to do so, according to a joint statement from Fox and Columbia Records. The tune debuted during “Glee’s” November 9 episode, “Never Been Kissed,” in which Criss made his first appearance as an openly gay teen from rival glee club the Dalton Academy Warblers. Criss is accompanied on the track by the Tufts University Beelzebubs, who also did the arrangement. Criss is humble about the track’s success, giving credit to great collaborators and good timing. “There’s a couple of things that stack up in my favor, preceding any shenanigans I may or may not be adding to it,” Criss told MTV News. “First of all, it’s a great song … between Dr. Luke, Ben Levin, Bonnie McKee, Max Martin, Katy Perry — those are all pretty strong pop writers. A lot of props go to the Beelzebubs from Tufts University, who arranged the killer arrangement. And the song was attached to a new character that a lot of people had a lot of speculation about. I’m just the lucky guy that got to be sprinkled on top.” Perry, however, couldn’t sing Criss’ praise more loudly, telling Access Hollywood , “He’s amazing! I love when any of my songs are remixed or interpreted differently. I just I love that. I really welcome a creative mind to anything.” The singer had previously tweeted, “Oh…My…Gosh… this just brought a sweet tear to my eye! Teenage Dream on GLEE makes my heart go WEEEEE!” Criss said the feeling is mutual. “She’s been really sweet. Katy makes my heart ‘go weeeee.’ It’s a great tune. ‘Glee’ Guest Star Darren Criss Not Yet A Series Regular

‘It’s never really been officially confirmed to me,’ Criss says of his rumored promotion. By Amy Wilkinson Darren Criss Photo: MTV News Darren Criss has been hitting all the right notes with “Glee” fans. A week after his November 9 debut on the Fox musical series, Criss’ rendition of Katy Perry’s “Teenage Dream” is a top-selling song on iTunes and the first “Glee” single to become a Billboard #1 single. Not surprisingly, the Internet’s been buzzing with rumors that Criss is being bumped from a recurring role to a series regular on “Glee.” But if that’s the case, it’s news to the actor. “The weird thing about that is, I hear it from all these different blogs and interviews. … It’s never really been officially confirmed to me,” Criss told MTV News. “I think the option is there and that they want to keep Blaine around.” Promotion speculation began swirling a day after Criss’ “Glee” debut as an openly gay glee club member from rival Dalton Academy (and potential love interest for Chris Colfer’s character Kurt). Deadline broke the news that Criss was in talks to become a series regular — a status that would take effect during the show’s already green-lit third season. Creator and executive producer Ryan Murphy seemed to confirm as much in an interview with AfterElton . “Darren has become such a sensation in one week, which I love,” Murphy told the website. “I think there’s a hunger for him and a positive relationship role model. He’ll definitely continue through the year and longer. We just signed a deal with him, so I don’t know.” Criss, who originally auditioned for the role of footballer heartthrob Finn Hudson (played by Cory Monteith), said that regardless of a potential promotion, he feels blessed to be a part of the hit series. “As of now, I’m just a guest star. And I’m even happy with that,” he said. “I’d be happy to be a regular, and I’d be happy to stick around as long as they let me.” Do you want to see Darren Criss promoted to a series regular? Katy Perry Plans ‘Larger Than Life’ Teenage Dream Videos

Pop star wants tour around the album to be a ‘massive production.’ By Jocelyn Vena Katy Perry Photo: Capitol Katy Perry soared to the top of the charts with her just-released second album, Teenage Dream, but don’t expect the pop star to sit around and count her dough now that she’s avoided the sophomore slump . She has big plans for the album, including a tour and “larger than life” music videos to follow in the footsteps of the clips for “California Gurls” and “Teenage Dream.” “I guess I’m looking forward to making music videos on this new album … and I’m really excited about incorporating the look and the idea of some of the songs on tour and making a massive production of it,” she said. “I’m gonna want a lot of visuals. I want it to be 10 times better than when I was on tour last.” She said this album shows her growth as an artist since releasing her debut One of the Boys, and she hopes to capture that visually. “This record is more important, as important, if not more important than the first record,” she said. “This one will really show if it was all by chance that the first one happened, which I strongly don’t believe. But I think I have to work just as hard and show people that there is a visual element. There’s a story to the songs. … I’m really excited about going on tour again and giving out those hugs and not handshakes and making those music videos that are going to be larger than life.” Calling the album a “perfect snapshot” of her life now, she said she has one major goal for it: “My ultimate goal is just to make people feel with music. I think that’s really important, the power of music, and hopefully people can hear that displayed in this record, but like I said, it’s not like anything I’m not. … It definitely has a little bit more spice to it.” Perry tweeted her excitement about the record’s success, thanking fans for helping it reach the top of the charts. “Before I purr off to dreamland I want to say THANK YOU! Thank you so much for my FIRST #1 RECORD DEBUT! I couldn’t have done it without YOU,” she wrote. “YAY CUPCAKES FOR EVERYONEEEEEEEEEE! #1TEENAGEDREAMDEBUT!” Are you excited for more videos from Teenage Dream ? Let us know in the comments! Katy Perry’s Teenage Dream Ends Eminem’s Chart Run

Fantasia’s Back to Me lands at #2, pushing Em’s Recovery to #3 on Billboard 200 albums chart. By Gil Kaufman Katy Perry’s Teenage Dream Photo: Capitol Records All good things must come to an end and it looks like Katy Perry might be the one to stop Eminem ‘s record-setting run at the top of the Billboard 200 albums chart. As expected, Perry’s Teenage Dream will block Eminem from lodging his eighth week at #1 on next week’s Billboard chart by selling 192,000 copies of her second official major label album, or more than four times as many as her first disc, One of the Boys, sold (47,000) in its first week two years ago. According to figures provided by Nielsen SoundScan, Perry isn’t the only one who bested Eminem. Former “American Idol” winner Fantasia bounces back from a dark personal period that included a recent suicide attempt by landing at #2 with Back to Me on sales of 117,000, which pushes Em’s Recovery down to its lowest chart position to date, #3, on sales of 98,000. There are some other newcomers in the top 10, though, including Usher , whose Versus mini-album comes in at #4 (46,000), followed by country rock act Little Big Town ‘s The Reason Why (42,000), the Randy Rogers Band ‘s Burning the Day (#8, 29,000) and hard rockers the Devil Wears Prada , whose Zombie EP sneaks in at #10 thanks to just under 25,000 units shifted. The rest of the top 10: Kem , Intimacy (#6, 30,000); Justin Bieber , My World 2.0 (#7, 29,000); and Ray LaMontagne and the Pariah Dogs , God Willin’ & the Creek Don’t Rise (#9, 28,000). After a nice run in the top 10 for three weeks, the Arcade Fire ‘s Suburbs falls nine spots to #16 (21,000) as they pass the 250,000 mark, while Usher’s five-month-old Raymond v. Raymond disc has a nice resurgence thanks to his new deluxe edition with seven new songs and a remix, surging up 12 spots to #19 as sales pick up by 57 percent to 20,000. Beloved indie folkie Sufjan Stevens has a strong showing at #27 with All Delighted People (15,000), as do college rock faves Ra Ra Riot , whose Orchard lands at #36 (10,000). Though his single “Cooler Than Me” has lit up the charts all summer, Mike Posner ‘s major label debut, 31 Minutes to Takeoff , has slid steadily down the chart since its debut two weeks ago, falling another 26 spots to #72 as sales dip to less than 6,000. The news is the same on the iTunes singles and albums charts as Perry took over the pole position on both with the album and the title track single. Em hangs in at #2 on the album tally, followed by the Rogers Band, Fantasia, Mumford & Sons’ Sigh No More, Usher’s Versus, Stevens, Never Shout Never’s Harmony, LaMontagne, and the Devil Wears Prada. Though iTunes does not divulge sales data, it was a good week for Perry, as her single led a group that was relatively unchanged from the week before, with Taio Cruz at #2 with “Dynamite,” followed by Bruno Mars’ “Just the Way You Are,” Eminem’s “Love the Way You Lie,” Enrique Iglesias’ fist-pumping anthem “I Like It,” Usher’s “DJ Got Us Fallin’ in Love,” Nelly’s “Just a Dream,” B.o.B’s “Magic,” Ke$ha’s “Take It Off” and newcomer Kid Cudi with the Kanye collabo “Erase Me.” Perry should be able to retain her perch next week, as the new faces in the crowd include the latest from Disturbed , the Goo Goo Dolls , Fabolous , Papa Roach and Lyfe Jennings .
