Harry Potter Finale Breaks $200M, Falls Just Short of 5-Day Record

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2 this week became only the third film to surpass the $200 million mark domestically within five days of release. Not bad! Alas, it left the five-day record to a celebrated studiomate — but not by much.

Latest Batman 3 Viral Marketing Involves Stealing Poor Schmuck’s Taco Bell

You knew that Batman had landed in a pretty bleak place at the end of The Dark Knight , but no one knew quite how bleak until this week, when the Caped Crusader hit bottom — at a Taco Bell. Video after the jump.

Was Amélie Really the Best-Shot Film of the Last Decade?

That’s what 17,000 voters at American Cinematographer — the house journal of the American Society of Cinematographers — have expressed in a new poll, the results of which were slipped over Movieline’s transom this morning. The dates considered are actually 1998-2008, which I guess means Avatar will have to wait for its peer-anointed glory. But back to the original question: Amélie ? Really? Read on for the rest of the Top 10, a bucketful of runners-up, and to contribute your own choice.

This is What Christopher Nolan Drives Around the WB Lot

Sure, Christopher Nolan’s priority right now might be Inception , but to judge from the golf cart he rides around the Warner Bros. lot, another Batman film is never far from his mind. And yeah, this mockup of Bruce Wayne’s Tumbler from The Dark Knight even has a jet engine in the back, just in case Nolan needs to make a speedy escape from studio executives trying to upsell him on 3D. Christopher Nolan on 3D: ‘Extremely Alienating’

Did you sit through Avatar — or Alice in Wonderland or any other 3D film released over the twelve months — and feel like you were watching it on a laptop with the brightness turned down? Well, Christopher Nolan feels your pain. While every other filmmaker in Hollywood — even, sadly, Martin Scorsese — embraces 3D imagery and technology, the Inception director is steadfastly holding out against the wave of extra dimensions and over-priced tickets.

Dark Knight Sequel Gets Release Date

A very excited Warner Bros. announced today that the long-awaited follow-up to The Dark Knight finally has a release date: July 20, 2012. The film doesn’t yet have a title, a cast, a plot, a director (though Christopher Nolan is widely assumed to be helming), or a format announcement (3D? IMAX ? Both?) but what would be the fun in divulging those? British tabloids need something to guess about . [ Box Office Mojo ]

Michael Caine on Harry Brown, Paycheck Roles and Why the British Do Dystopia Best

The grim, almost impossibly violent Harry Brown will no doubt draw endless comparisons to Dirty Harry and other risible exemplars of do-it-yourself crimefighting. But beyond the grit of the British projects where lawless hell descends, the film truly thrives in the quiet dignity afforded by leading man Michael Caine. Even as his ex-Marine title character goes to war against the subculture of hoodlums, addicts, dealers and thieves, the 77-year-old acting legend reinforces the bloodshed with purpose and gravitas. Clearly there’s a little something more going on here than just target practice; Brown’s mission to restore order is perhaps secondary only to Caine’s own to effect change.

Avatar Breaks Even More Records

After setting the record for most Blu-ray discs sold in a single day , the fact that Avatar is now the biggest selling Blu-ray of all-time should surprise exactly no one. In just four days, the highest grossing movie ever sold a ridiculous 2.7 million Blu-ray discs, which is more than previous record holder, The Dark Knight , sold in 16 months. Of course all these records beg the question: If it weren’t Avatar , what would people have spent their disposable income on during the past four months? [ LAT /Company Town ]

Celebrity Apprentice’s Summer Sanders on Rod Blagojevich, Sharon Osbourne, and the Contents of Nickelodeon Slime

Summer Sanders has only added positive marks to the reputation she established as an Olympic golden girl. The Roseville, CA native racked up four swimming medals — two of them gold — in Barcelona’s 1992 summer games. Since then, Sanders has acted as a commentator during several Olympic games and hosted a consistent stream of television series: NBA Inside Stuff , The Sports List , MTV’ s Sandblast , Skating with Celebrities , and Nickelodeon’s classic game show Figure It Out , where celebrity panelists guessed the hidden talents and achivements of pint-sized prodigies. Now, as a contestant on NBC’ s current season of Celebrity Apprentice , Sanders’s Olympic-size goal is to please The Donald and deal with Cyndi Lauper’s scatterbrained work ethic. The 37-year-old legend talked with Movieline about Celebrity Apprentice ‘s zany cast, her favorite Figure It Out memories, and an inspiring trip to Rwanda.
