In his first commencement speech, Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Michael Vick claimed to be more nervous than before a football game. Despite his nerves, Vick got nothing but love from the hundreds gathered to hear his remarks to graduates of the alternative Camelot high schools at the Kimmel Center in Philadelphia. He also surprised two students with $5,000 college scholarships. Vick plans to give out the $5,000 awards annually. Camelot’s six campuses in Philadelphia serve about 1,800 students with emotional, disciplinary or academic problems. Vick gave his commencement speech to about 450 graduates. In speeches during Friday’s ceremony and in a private meeting with the former Falcons quarterback before the event, several graduates spoke of rebounding from previous troubles or poor choices to earn a diploma with the second chance they were given at Camelot. Teen star performed a mini-show with her band the Scene on Monday, after a brief hospitalization. The Disney star spent the weekend recovering after being hospitalized last Thursday in Los Angeles for a combination of food poisoning and exhaustion. The 18-year-old singer/actress took the stage for a performance at the Santa Monica Place mall Monday afternoon, wearing a flowing, white blouse over a white tank top, black shorts, and black strappy heels. Gomez and her band, the Scene, played two of her hit songs, “Who Says” and “A Year Without Rain,” to cheers from the crowd. Gomez thanked her fans profusely for coming out to see her and for their support, especially in the last few days. She also apologized for missing her original appearance, which had been scheduled for this past Friday. “I want to thank you so much for coming. If you guys came on Friday, I’m so sorry that I couldn’t be here,” she said before the band struck up the first few notes of “Who Says.” “I love you guys very much.” Although Gomez didn’t do any crazy dance movies or flips, she performed each song with plenty of energy. Her voice sounded strong and steady. At the end of the second song, the teen star answered a few questions from fans in the audience, mostly pegged to her experience filming the upcoming movie “Monte Carlo,” around which the event was organized. A physical scientist and forensic examiner testified today that there was heart-shaped residue on the duct tape over the mouth of slain Caylee Anthony. “It was approximately the size of a dime,” Elizabeth Fontaine testified as the murder trial of Casey Anthony, Caylee’s mother, continued this morning. “If you wore a band aid for an extended time, then take it off, there would be glue residue and debris. That’s what this looked like, but heart shaped.” The state, which says Caylee was murdered , plans to introduce evidence that similar heart-shaped stickers were found in Casey Anthony’s home. Some evidence at the trial has been enough to make Casey Anthony sick . But one thing was missing from the tape: fingerprints of the toddler’s killer. The FBI believes the fingerprints vanished when Caylee’s body was outdoors in the months before she was found in the woods near her home. “Fingerprints are fragile,” Fontaine said . “It’s not surprising there were none.” In cross-examination, defense attorney Jose Baez criticized the sticker evidence. “When you examined it a second time, it was gone,” Baez said. “Is that correct?” “It was no longer visible,” said Fontaine, who noted that other FBI agents had tested the duct tape in the meantime while investigating the case. The trial is entering its fourth week, and the prosecution says it will wrap up its case soon. Casey Anthony faces the death penalty if convicted.
