Jenny Lewis Accompanies Jake Gyllenhaal to Golden Globes

Sorry, Taylor Swift. We hope you weren’t watching the Golden Globes last night. Just a couple weeks after he reportedly broke the singer’s heart , Jake Gyllenhaal showed up at the event with ex-girlfriend Jenny Lewis. The star, who was nominated for Best Actor in a Comedy/Musical for Love and Other Drugs , walked the red carpet with his former fling, an actress who appeared in Troop Beverly Hills and Foxfire . That’s not an impressive resume. But, if this couple is back on, you’re looking at one impressive catch for Lewis. Look away, Taylor Swift! Just look away.

Patton Oswalt: Response To Geek Column Has ‘Proven The Point’

‘Zombie Spaceship Wasteland’ author talks to MTV News about reaction to his controversial Wired article. By Rick Marshall Patton Oswalt Photo: MTV News Late last year, Patton Oswalt created quite a stir in the online world when he wrote a column for Wired calling for the annihilation of the nerd world as we know it. Just a few weeks and no small amount of controversy later, the actor/comedian says he feels vindicated by the discussion the column generated. Titled “Wake Up, Geek Culture. Time to Die,” the column was published just days before the release of Oswalt’s “Zombie Spaceship Wasteland,” a collection of essays that collectively form the newly minted author’s memoir. In the Wired piece, Oswalt lamented the mainstreaming and growing accessibility of all of the things that once defined “nerd culture.” With all manner of geekery now providing the fuel for popular culture, he pushed for readers to accelerate the burn, eventually forcing society to find new obsessions and exotica once everything else has been cataloged, ranked and quoted into oblivion. “In order to save pop culture future, we’ve got to make the present pop culture suck, at least for a little while,” he wrote. Not surprisingly, the column prompted no small amount of online debate, and when Oswalt dropped by MTV News to discuss his new book, he offered up some thoughts on the intense back-and-forth his missive created. “I feel like I said what I wanted to say but, if I might add, the fact that the Internet blew up the way it did might have partially proven the point that I had in the essay,” he told us. Along with calling for a pop-culture apocalypse, the actor also coined a brand-new term: Etewaf. It stands for “Everything That Ever Was — Available Forever,” and according to Oswalt, making everything we loved about the past available will do no more harm than good, and reduce the desire for more of the nostalgia-filled elements of our youth that made today’s “Star Wars” muscle shirts and tributes to “The Rocky Horror Picture Show” on “Glee” cool in the first place. Of course, whether he’s correct is the stuff of continued debate both on the Net and offline — and that’s the just the way he wants it. “I don’t want to get too deep into it, I’d rather have people try to interpret it,” he continued. “Some of the arguments against it have been really eloquent and brilliant, so I’m just glad that it inspired people way smarter than me to write stuff.” What’s your take on Oswalt’s Etewaf theory? Tell us in the comments!

Gwyneth Paltrow, Sophia Bush Related To Arizona Shooting Victims

Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords is Paltrow’s cousin. By Gil Kaufman Gwyneth Paltrow Photo: Frazer Harrison/ Getty Images The nation is in shock from the tragic shooting spree that took the lives of six people in Arizona on Saturday after a gunman attacked U.S. Representative Gabrielle Giffords outside a supermarket, shooting the Democratic House member in the head. Giffords remains in critical condition after the assault by troubled 22-year-old Jared L. Loughner, who is in police custody and has been charged with five federal counts, including the attempted assassination of a member of Congress. In total, 20 people were injured during the shooting spree and while Giffords’ wounds are considered extremely dangerous, her doctors have expressed reserved optimism that she may survive. The victims of the violence have an unexpected connection to the entertainment world. “Entertainment Tonight” reported that Giffords, 40, is the cousin of actress Gwyneth Paltrow. A representative for Paltrow released a statement about the incident, in which the star said, “Although I have never had the pleasure of meeting congresswoman Giffords, my thoughts and prayers are with her and her family as well as the other victims of this horrible act of senseless violence.” Actress Sophia Bush was also related to one of the victims, 9-year-old Christina Green, who was the second cousin of the “One Tree Hill” star. Green, who was born on September 11, 2001 and who had developed an interest in politics, was Bush’s second cousin. The actress posted a series of tweets on Sunday decrying the violence that took her cousin’s life. “There are no words to explain what my cousin’s family is going through in Arizona,” she wrote. “How can this be? Violence is never the answer.” Bush also encouraged anyone who knows somebody struggling with mental illness to lend a hand. “If you know anyone who is struggling, please reach out to them,” she added. “No one should feel so alone that they resort to senseless violence.” Green, who appeared in a book called “50 Faces of Hope” that profiled children born on the day of the September 11 attacks, had recently joined the student council at her grade school and attended the event for Giffords because of her budding interest in politics. “We got robbed, she got robbed of a beautiful life she could have had,” mother Roxanna Green told CNN. President Obama has called for a national moment of silence on Monday at 11 a.m. in honor of the victims in the shooting.

Selena Gomez: Tormentingly Tanned and Toned at People’s Choice Awards 2011

Selena Gomez dropped jaws looking freshly tanned and all grown up in a ruffled pale pink Paule Ka dress at the 2011 People’s Choice Awards at the Nokia Theater in Los Angeles on Wednesday night, January 5. The 18-year-old Disney star’s tan, of course, came from the time she spent sunning herself in a bikini on a boat in St. Lucia in the Caribbean last weekend. But what about the grown up look? That too was was inevitable, considering who she spent her time in St. Lucia with: Justin Bieber, with all of his 16-year life experience, Canadian charm and insanely hot looks. Selena, 18, paired her one shoulder mini dress with matching Guiseppe Zanotti peep-toe pumps with jeweled heels, Kotur clutch and spectacular jewels – amethyst and diamond teardrop Trésor earrings, a dainty diamond bracelet by Vahan, and a statement Brumani ring on her left hand middle finger. Her side swept hair was styled in soft waves. Lined eyes with lots of eyelashes, blue eye shadow and neutral lip-gloss rounded her mesmerizing looks. At the event, Selena performed her new single – A Year Without Rain – along with her band The Scene. At the end of her set she and her band members were presented with a trophy for Favorite Breakout Artist Award. Ironically she was up against Justin Bieber for the title along with B.o.B., Bruno Mars and K$sha. Justin Bieber lost out his second nomination for Favorite Music Video to the Eminem and Rihanna duet ‘Love The Way You Lie.’

Lady Gaga Unveils Polaroid Camera Sunglasses

Mother Monster also shows off portable photo printer and other gadgets from her ‘Grey Label’ collaboration during electronics fest. By Mawuse Ziegbe Lady Gaga at CES 2011 in Las Vegas Photo: Steven Lawton/FilmMagic She’s adorned her shades with lit cigarettes and covered her peepers with jewel-encrusted spheres , but Lady Gaga’s latest pair of sunglasses has taken eyewear to stylish and tech-savvy new heights. The influential songstress revealed her yearlong “Grey Label” collaboration with Polaroid to a packed room and thousands of fans who tuned into the event via Ustream at the Consumer Electronics Show, or CES, in Las Vegas on Thursday (January 6), and among the spankin’ new products is a pair of shades with cameras embedded in the lenses. Gaga, who took the stage nearly an hour after the publicized start time in a black corseted gown and wispy veil, showed off the innovative specs perched on a bronzed mannequin. Once turned on, tiny twin screens appeared in each lens, and Gaga explained that the futuristic accessories can snap photos and capture video, and are equipped with Bluetooth capabilities and a USB connector. Mother Monster also showed off a sleek, portable photo printer about the size of a clock radio that allows users to instantly print physical copies of smartphone pics using Bluetooth technology — although the device isn’t iPhone compatible. Gaga said the invention was inspired by seeing the legions of concertgoers thrusting camera phones in the air at her shows. She then demonstrated the nifty printer by snapping a picture of the assembled crowd of Gaga-ites and gadget heads — playfully barking, “Smile! You’re so f—ing famous! — and brandishing a glossy image minutes later from the mini-machine. According to a Polaroid executive, the product should be available in May. Gaga also introduced a suitably stylish and social media-friendly revamp of the classic Polaroid instant camera that she said would eventually allow photogs to directly share images on Facebook and Twitter. The product is slated to hit shelves around Christmas. The Gaga-approved gadgets cap off a year of tinkering at Polaroid, which began when the “Bad Romance” belter was announced as a creative director in January 2010. “I love the products, I’m so proud to be here,” Gaga gushed about developing the gadgets with Polaroid. “They honored me as a woman, as a creative director and they really let me [put my] hands in there and design this sh– myself.” What do you think of Gaga’s Polaroid “Grey Label” gadgets? Injured ‘Spider-Man’ Actor Leaves Hospital For Rehab

Christopher Tierney had back surgery after suffering a 20-foot fall during a preview performance of the Broadway musical. By Terri Schwartz “Spiderman: Turn Off the Dark” Photo: Marvel Injured “Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark” actor Christopher Tierney has begun inpatient rehabilitation after spending nine days in the intensive care unit at Bellevue Hospital, his father told The Associated Press. Tierney sustained several injuries and had to receive back surgery for his cracked vertebrae after he fell more than 20 feet during a performance December 20. He walked for the first time after his injury on Monday. Even though there haven’t been any new injuries plaguing the $65 million Broadway show, “Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark” has been surrounded by bad press in recent days. On Tuesday, lead actress Natalie Mendoza decided to leave the show after she suffered a concussion in November. Also, theater critics from Newsday and Bloomberg News chose to purchase tickets to preview performances of the musical instead of following the unspoken Broadway agreement to wait until a critics performance to watch the musical. Their reviews were generally unfavorable, and those involved in the production were not pleased, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Michael Riedel, a critic from the New York Post, checked out the show last Thursday but was asked to move from the good seat he paid for to a terrible balcony seat for “safety reasons.” After asking if the row he was in (D) was labeled “D for death,” the theater manager clarified that the seat was actually sold twice and that his ticket would be refunded if he moved to a seat in the orchestra. He was unable to see many of the flying stunts from that vantage point. “Injured or cheated. Take your pick,” he wrote. Director Julie Taymor chose to cancel a New York Times event where she would have been interviewed about the play, citing scheduling conflicts. A press representative for Taymor told The Hollywood Reporter that “with the changes to the Spider-Man production schedule, Julie will be deep in rehearsals and will not be available to participate.” The event was scheduled for January 8 and Taymor would have been interviewed by Times theater reporter Patrick Healy (who was at the same preview performance as Riedel). Last week, several preview performances were canceled after Tierney’s performance while new safety measures were put into effect. The musical is slated for an official open on February 7.
