Crowds Pack Cow Palace for Hemp Expo

Crowds were large Saturday and Sunday. The only surprise of the weekend is that a lot of those who came out spoke words of disapproval of California's Proposition 19, which would legalize pot for recreational use. A new poll shows Prop. 19 ahead, but it looks like that approval is coming from people who can't currently use it for medical purposes. Reporters covering the Daly City event said they found it hard to find any Prop. 19 love at the Cow Palace. http://www.nbcbayarea.com/news/local-beat/Crowds-Pack-Cow-Palace-for-Hemp-Expo-1… added by: JackHerer

Iraqi Govt. Repressing Activists

After thousands of Iraqis took to the streets this summer to protest a chronic lack of government services, Iraqi authorities are cracking down on demonstrations. In the past few months, the government has refused to authorize numerous requests for public demonstrations, with no explanation. Authorities have also arrested and intimidated organizers and protesters, and policing actions have led to deaths and injuries. added by: The_Global_Report

FDA Won’t Allow Food to Be Labeled "FREE of Genetic Modification"

'Extra labeling only confuses the consumer,' biotech spokesman says That the Food and Drug Administration is opposed to labeling foods that ARE genetically modified is no surprise anymore, but a report in the Washington Post indicates the FDA won't even allow food producers to label their foods as being FREE of genetic modification. In reporting that the FDA will likely not require the labeling of genetically modified salmon if it approves the food product for consumption, the Post's Lyndsey Layton notes that the federal agency “won't let conventional food makers trumpet the fact that their products don't contain genetically modified ingredients.” The agency warned the dairy industry in 1994 that it could not use “Hormone Free” labeling on milk from cows that are not given engineered hormones, because all milk contains some hormones. It has sent a flurry of enforcement letters to food makers, including B&G Foods, which was told it could not use the phrase “GMO-free” on its Polaner All Fruit strawberry spread label because GMO refers to genetically modified organisms and strawberries are produce, not organisms. It told the maker of Spectrum Canola Oil that it could not use a label that included a red circle with a line through it and the words “GMO,” saying the symbol suggested that there was something wrong with genetically engineered food. “This to me raises questions about whose interest the FDA is protecting,” House Rep. Dennis Kucinich (D-OH) told the Post. Kucinich has repeatedly introduced bills in the House that would require the labeling of genetically modified foods. David Edwards, director of animal biotechnology at the Biotechnology Industry Organization, told the Post that “extra labeling only confuses the consumer. … It differentiates products that are not different. As we stick more labels on products that don't really tell us anything more, it makes it harder for consumers to make their choices.” The Post notes that the debate over genetically modified salmon, which will be decided at an FDA advisory panel meeting this week, “comes at a time when Americans seem to want to know more about their food – where it is grown, how it is produced and what it contains.” “The public wants to know and the public has a right to know,” New York University nutrition professor Marion Nestle told the Post. “I think the agency has discretion, but it's under enormous political pressure to approve [the salmon] without labeling.” added by: Stoneyroad

Dead fish all over east coast-lack of oxygen from gulf ecocide?

What a coverup. It doesn't take a genius to figure out that the oil more than likely has entered the ocean current loop and may well be depriving oxygen to marinelife causing these huge fishkills all up the East Coast. The media is covering it up, the government is covering it up. And yes, there are such things as fishkills and that is understood. However, this seems out of the ordinary. It isn't enough that we are killing the oceans with our plastic, poisons, acidification, overfishing and agricultural run off, we will now let BP get away with dealing the final blow. added by: JanforGore

Cuba to cut 500,000 gov’t workers

Cuba announced Monday it will cast off at least half a million state employees by mid-2011 and reduce restrictions on private enterprise to help them find new jobs — the most dramatic step yet in President Raul Castro's push to radically remake employment on the communist-run island. Castro suggested during a nationally televised address on Easter Sunday that as many 1 million Cuban workers — about one in five — may be redundant. But the government had not previously laid out specific plans to reduce the work force. The layoffs will start immediately and continue through the first half of next year, according to the nearly 3 million-strong Cuban Workers Confederation — the only labor union allowed by the government. http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20100913/ap_on_bi_ge/cb_cuba_mass_layoffs added by: ibrake4rappers13

George Will Helps Arianna Huffington Make a Fool of Herself on This Week

As NewsBusters has previously reported , liberal Internet publisher Arianna Huffington is breathtakingly ignorant when it comes to basic economic theory. On Sunday, she proved it again by making an absolute fool of herself on ABC’s “This Week.” With the “Roundtable” segment beginning on the subject of the economy, Huffington noted how the failure of the banking bailout to stimulate growth was “proof that the government does not work.” In a stunning display of both idiocy and hypocrisy, she moments later demanded more financial regulations, including a reinstatement of the Depression Era Glass-Steagall Act, to – wait for it! – stimulate the economy. Adding insult to injury, George Will was available to really make clear what an absolute imbecile Huffington is (video follows with partial transcript and commentary):   ARIANNA HUFFINGTON: At the bottom of the Tea Party movement of that anger is anger at the bailout. And you know, here people, Democrats, Republicans have been given proof that the government does not work because the government spent almost $800 billion and look where we are. Wall Street is doing well. Main Street is suffering. CHRISTIANE AMANPOUR, HOST: Somebody I was talking to over the, during the week, people in business and venture capital who were saying, “Why doesn’t the government do more to force banks to lend, to do more to make it easier for people to actually go out there and show some kind of consumer activity?” GEORGE WILL: Well maybe if the government did less, period, people would be more inclined to lend money. The banks aren’t hoarding the money because they are in a pout. They’re not hoarding the money because they’re mad at somebody. They’re hoarding money because they can’t find lenders who think they can borrow it and make money. HUFFINGTON: No, that’s not true. The banks are getting almost zero-percent interest rate… WILL: Yes. HUFFINGTON: …loans from the Fed and they are spending it to make a lot of profit in derivatives tradings and all the things that got us into this trouble in the first place. And this administration and this Congress still has not passed an end to Too Big To Fail, still has not reinstated Glass-Steagall. So even, even though people may not be able to give you all these details, they know that the system has not been fixed, that financial reform is full of loopholes, and that the system is not fair, basically, for them as they’re seeing their lives falling apart. Amazing. So first she says the failure of the bailout to stoke lending is an example of how government doesn’t work, and then she asks for more government intervention to get the economy going. Boggles the mind, doesn’t it? Moments later, Will put the icing on the cake: WILL: We started arguing about the tax cut. The president says we can’t afford the tax cuts for the wealthy because that would add $700 billion to the deficit over ten years. Which is to say over ten years it would add less to the deficit than Obama added with the stimulus in one year. Simple arithmetic most fourth graders would understand unless they were raised or educated by liberals like Huffington.

US Turning Into USSR

“While the many glaring differences between the two political systems have been exhaustively publicized – especially in the U.S. – the glaring similarities [go] unnoticed,” Celente writes in The Trends Journal, which he publishes. In the accompanying video, Celente describes some of these similarities, including: A rotten political system: He compares politicians (Democrats and Republicans alike) to “Mafioso” and says campaign contributions are really thinly disguised “bribes and payoffs.” Crony capitalism: Like in the USSR of old, Celente laments that so much of America's wealth (93%) is controlled by such a small group small portion of its population (10%). Owing to that concentration of wealth, the government makes policies designed to reward “the bigs” at the expense of average citizens (see: Bailouts, banks). Military-industrial complex: The USSR went bankrupt fighting the cold war and Celente fears the U.S. is “squandering its greater but still finite resources on a gargantuan defense budget, fighting unwinnable hot wars and feeding an insatiable military stationed on hundreds of bases worldwide.” As with many observers, Celente thinks America will suffer the same fate in Afghanistan as the USSR, the British Empire, Alexander the Great and all others who've ventured into the “graveyard of empires.” The irony, of course, is that while America defeated Soviet Communism and won the Cold War, perhaps our greatest threat today comes from China and its booming state-controlled economy. http://finance.yahoo.com/tech-ticker/article/535351/America-Won-the-Cold-War-But… http://www.rickandsusanna.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/02/ussa.jpg added by: ibrake4rappers13

Open Thread: You Thought the Bailouts Were Over?

Victor Davis Hanson and Kyle Smith explore two upcoming bailouts, one directed at state governments – and therefore at the public employee unions whose lavish contracts threaten to bankrupt a number of state treasuries – and the other at homeowners who can’t afford their mortgages. “What did you expect?” asks Hanson . Progressive culture, where ads blare hourly about skipping out on credit card debt, shorting the IRS, and walking away from mortgages, did the public employee unions really think they were exempt from a Chrysler-like renegotiation? In the age of Obama, there is no real contractual obligation: everything from paying back bondholders to fixing a BP penalty is, well, “negotiable.” When the money runs out, the law will too. Law? There is no law other than a mandated equality of result. “That’s right,”  Smith notes : If you bet badly in the housing-market casino of the Aughties, the government is thinking of refunding some of your chips so you can play again. You may have heard something about a sub-prime real-estate bubble that popped and nearly took down the financial system with it? President Obama wants to double down. Are we starting (continuing) to see a pattern here?
