Open Thread: Pelosi Wants to Investigate Mosque Opponents

That’s right, not the people building the Ground Zero Mosque, the people who are leading the grassroots campaign to prevent it from being built. She said the following to reporters (via  Kerry Picket ): There is no question that there is a concerted effort to make this a political issue by some. And I join those who have called for looking into how is this opposition to the mosque being funded . How is this being ginned up that here we are talking about Treasure Island, something we’ve been working on for decades, something of great interest to our community as we go forward to an election about the future of our country and two of the first three questions are about a zoning issue in New York City. So Pelosi’s complaint is that voters care about this issue. And her response is to call for an investigation. What are your thoughts on her statement?

NewsBusters 5th Anniversary: A Look Back at Some of Our Top Posts on Journalistic Obamagasms

As part of the 5th anniversary celebration of NewsBusters we have started a weekly Five for Five feature to list the blog’s top twenty five posts. Last week, we looked at the top five posts that broke news. Today we continue with the top five posts on journalistic Obamagasms. We have picked out a couple posts from each of the five categories and asked the authors to reflect back on writing them up. In this series of short videos, they share their thoughts on how they caught the particular media moment and describe the impact their post had. We continue our video look back by reflecting on two of top posts on journalistic Obamagasms: “Matthews: Obama Speech Caused ‘Thrill Going Up My Leg'” by Brad Wilmouth (reflection by Tim Graham) and “Newsweek’s Evan Thomas: Obama Is ‘Sort of God'” by Kyle Drennen. Check out last week’s video of NewsBusters’ Rich Noyes and Kyle Drennen remembering some of the top posts that broke news.

Country/pop star ties a Billboard record with single’s #3 debut. By James Dinh Taylor Swift Photo: Stephen Lovekin/Getty Images It’s only been a week since Taylor Swift’s “Mine” hit radio , but the lead single from her new album, Speak Now, is already making a splash on the upcoming Billboard Hot 100 with a #3 debut. According to Billboard, “Mine” makes chart history since Swift is only the second female artist in the history of the Hot 100 chart to debut multiple songs (“Mine” and “Today Was a Fairy Tale”) in the top five during a one-year time frame. Mariah Carey also accomplished this feat with her hits “Fantasy” and “One Sweet Day” in 1995. While “Mine” wasn’t able to dethrone Eminem and Rihanna’s “Love the Way You Lie” from the #1 spot, she is on top of the Hot Digital Songs chart with 297,000 in downloads. Swift recorded a video message thanking country radio for all the support, saying, “Konnichiwa! I just wanted to say hi to everybody, all my friends on country radio. I’m about to play for 45,000 people in Japan. Wish me luck. Thank you for the first week. I love you.” Fans will get their first glimpse of Swift performing “Mine” during a pre-recorded performance on the upcoming TV special “CMA Music Festival: Country’s Night to Rock,” which airs September 1. Kanye West Drops ‘See Me Now,’ Says Only Eminem Will Top Nicki Minaj

‘Ye also reveals during Hot 97 chat that Jay-Z-featuring ‘Power’ remix is due Friday. By Shaheem Reid Kanye West Photo: Dominique Charriau/WireImage In an interview Wednesday (August 11) with New York hip-hop station Hot 97, Kanye West played new music, gave Nicki Minaj accolades and revealed a few nuggets of news to host Angie Martinez. The first revelation: West will put out a remix of “Power” featuring Jay-Z on Friday. He also hinted that his still-untitled upcoming LP will drop November 16, revealing a track from the album called “See Me Now,” which features Beyonce and Charlie Wilson and was produced by Lex Luger, No ID and West himself. Other producers confirmed for the album are Q-Tip, Pete Rock and the RZA. What were West’s requirements for potential producers? “People with that intangible sound. People that everybody copied. The originators. That’s what my thing is: quality. What is the best of the best?” Later in the interview, Kanye said Young Money star Nicki Minaj could be one of the greatest hip-hop stars ever. “This is gonna be such a big statement, and such a big thing to fill: The scariest artist right now is definitely Nicki Minaj. I think she has the most potential to be the number-two rapper of all time. Nobody’s gonna be bigger than Eminem.” When asked what being the “number-two rapper of all-time” meant, he said, “Everything! Having a whole network one day. Everything that comes with it.” He also confirmed that Nicki is on his album, as is G.O.O.D. Music artist Kid Cudi. The Louis Vuitton Don named Cudi, Drake, Rick Ross and Lil Wayne as the MCs making a major impact right now. Do you agree that Eminem and Nicki Minaj could be the two biggest rappers ever? Katie Couric: ‘Obama Has Enough Stress to Last a Lifetime’

Give the guy a break, he deserves it. That was Katie Couric’s message a week ago in her Notebook blog entry about President Obama’s 49th birthday (emphasis mine): The job has aged him, as it did his predecessors. Dr. Michael Roizen at the Cleveland Clinic stated constant stress can age the Commander in Chief two years for every one year in office. So I guess that means he’s really turning 50. President Obama has enough stress to last a lifetime … and as he blows out his birthday candles, war, recession and a giant oil spill won’t magically disappear. But I hope he’s able to take a break tonight, forget his troubles and spend time doing something he loves. But as Paul Bedard of USNews.com noted in an August 11 blog Washington Whispers blog post, Obama has not exactly been lacking in the R&R department : There they go again. For the fifth time since July, the first family has set plans to board Air Force One for a frilly vacation , a 10-day return trip to exclusive Martha’s Vineyard where they are expected to stay at the 28-acre oceanfront Blue Heron Farm that rents for up to $50,000 a week. But first the Obamas will be traveling to the Gulf Coast of Florida for a mini-vacation as a way to encourage other vacationing Americans to head to the beaches that have been shunned by tourists worried about oil-slicked sands due to the Gulf oil spill. They are expected to travel to Florida this weekend, return to Washington for a few days then it’s off to the Massachusetts island August 19. For a recap, here is this year’s Obama Travelogue: -Full family Christmas and New Years in Hawaii . -March spring break-first lady Michelle Obama, mom Marian Robinson, and both daughters hit Broadway. -Memorial Day in Chicago with the family. -Three days in July in Maine, primarily tony Bar Harbor. -Last week, the president traveled to Chicago for a birthday party with Oprah and others. -Michelle and Sasha spent much of last week on Spain’s southern coast, ending it with a trip to Majorca to meet the king and queen of Spain. -Florida this weekend for a night on the Gulf Coast. -August 19-29 on Martha’s Vineyard. Of course, every president faces unimaginable stress from the weight of responsibility from the job, but the media never ceased to remind us of how many days President Bush spent in the summer telecommuting to work from his Crawford, Texas, ranch.  Yet when it comes to President Obama and his penchant to jet off on vacation every few weeks, Couric and company tell us Obama deserves a break, even as he’s taken care to do that plenty of times already.

Scarborough to Rep. Weiner on 9/11 Responders Controversy: ‘You’re Not Going to Demagogue This Issue!’

Love him or hate him as a “conservative,” MSNBC host Joe Scarborough just showed he hasn’t been completely brainwashed at his network. On his Aug. 11 program, Scarborough demonstrated just how thin the veil is over the parlor tricks going on with in the U.S. House of Representatives controlled by Democratic Speaker Nancy Pelosi. At the center of this was the back-and-forth between Reps. Peter King, R-N.Y., and Anthony Weiner, D-N.Y., over Sept. 11 responders compensation legislation. Their disagreement has been well documented dating back to Weiner’s late-July outburst on the House floor accusing House Republicans of playing politics with this legislation. The two had one more dust-up on Fox News a day later , but since then it has been a he-said, he-said situation. Weiner alleges this was a non-controversial bill that should have been passed easily with a two-thirds vote. King argues the Democratic House leadership could have offered it up and it would have passed with a simple majority. But there were some issues with offering the bill up under normal House procedure with the Hispanic Caucus. Video and Partial Transcript Below Fold According to MSNBC congressional correspondent Luke Russert, it was Rep. Nydia Velázquez, D-N.Y., who said the Hispanic Caucus would walk away from the legislation if Republicans were allowed to offer amendments, which would force an up-or-down vote on whether or not illegal immigrants would be eligible for these benefits. Highlight starts about five minutes into the clip below. Visit msnbc.com for breaking news , world news , and news about the economy “Nydia Velázquez of New York echoed her thoughts to the leadership according to my sources that the Latino Caucus, Hispanic Caucus would walk if this motion, if this language was not in the original bill,” Russert explained. “Thus, in the motion to recommit the Republicans would bring up the illegal immigration language, it would have forced a lot of Blue Dog Democrats, a lot of moderates to have to take a very difficult immigration vote.” After Russert offered his explanation, the debate deteriorated between Scarborough and Weiner: WEINER: Do you have any idea hoe mind-numbingly tedious this sounds to most Americans? SCARBOROUGH: No, no, no – you’re not going to demagogue this issue. You demagogued it before. The fact of the matter is this – WEINER: Dial it down, buddy. SCARBOROUGH: Whoa, Anthony Weiner is telling me to relax. WEINER: Just relax, joe. SCARBOROUGH: No, because you know you are nailed. You came on my show and demagogued.

Exclusive: Young Jeezy Addresses Rick Ross ‘Dis’ Speculation

‘What am I gonna get out of dissing him?’ the Snowman says to MTV News, addressing ‘Death B4 Dishonor’ verse. By Shaheem Reid Young Jeezy and Rick Ross, Atlanta, GA, 10.12.2009 Photo: MTV News We’re not going to make you wait 26 episodes until the season finale to reveal the answer to this cliffhanger. On Monday night, Young Jeezy released “Death B4 Dishonor,” the first song from his upcoming mixtape, 1,000 Grams, Vol. 1. On it, he raps over Rick Ross’ “(B.M.F.) Blowin’ Money Fast” instrumental, which quickly fueled heavy speculation among fans that the Snowman was actually dissing the Bawse. Jeezy settled the question straight-up on Tuesday (August 10). “It’s not a dis,” Jizzle told MTV News via phone from ATL. “First of all, I’m not gonna get nothing out of dissing that guy. That’s one. What am I gonna get out of dissing him? I think sometimes people can read into things too deep. They trippin’ man. They crazy out there. Basically, if homie takes that as a dis, he’s insecure, and anybody else out there who does, they are insecure. “When it comes to that [Black Mafia Family] situation, I’m gonna talk about it a little flyer anyway,” Young added. “I happen to know that situation very well. But basically [‘Death B4 Dishonor’], it’s off a mixtape that’s coming out. My mixtape is coming out on Thursday, it’s called 1,000 Grams. I took all the records I liked and flipped them my way. It’s a gang of records on there like that. It’s like 12 joints, all records that I heard in the club that I like and flipped them my way. While Jeezy doesn’t mention Ross by name on “Death B4 Dishonor,” one of the lines fueling the speculation questions: “How you Blowin’ Money Fast?/ You don’t know the crew/ Oh, you part of the fam?/ Sh–, I never knew.” “That’s for real,” Jeezy explained. “That’s for anybody. I got n—as in prison behind that sh–. I feel that if you speaking on sh–, you gotta at least know who you talking about. That’s like n—as speaking on Cash Money: If he ain’t never been a part of Cash Money, [then] I’mma speak it better if I’m a part of Cash Money. To me, [BMF] was real. I know all the members. Who else would say a line like that, but me? I’m one of the few people who can say that, so I said it. That’s real life, though. You gotta know the crew, baby. I thought that was the purpose of the game: to get on records and talk your sh–, right? “Subliminals, for what?” the Snowman added. ‘What’s understood ain’t gotta be said. I didn’t think people would take the record like that. I did it like I would have any Shawty Lo record, any Rocko record, whoever. I got on [Ross’ beat] and did it like how I do it, the best way I know how. I don’t know if because the BMF situation is for real for me that everybody is like, ‘Ooh. Oh, sh–.’ Twitter is a muthaf—a, by the way.” During our talk, Jeezy said that his song “The Real BMF” had already been recorded (and was sitting in his vault) before Ross’s “(B.M.F.)” was released. “The Real BMF” was supposed to have been included on the upcoming TM103, but once he heard that Ross put out a song so similar, he decided it didn’t belong on his LP; it would just be a giveaway to the streets. Young also described Ross’ “(B.M.F.)” as “dope” and said he was bound to jump on the record one way or another, either officially or through the mixtape circuit, which he ultimately did. On 1,000 Grams, Vol. 1 he also flips Soulja Boy’s “Pretty Boy Swag” into “Dope Boy Swag” and Kanye West’s “Power” into the record & #8212; so aptly titled for the #1 Trap Star & #8212; “Powder.” Records by the Clipse and Young Money also get their instrumentals borrowed for the tape. “It was one of those things, you get in a zone and wanna get some sh– off,” he said of the DJ Scream-hosted tape. “I wanted to have some fun. Get in the booth, smoke me one or two.” And yes, his long awaited TM103 album is still on the way. He promises it’ll drop before the end of 2011. What do you think of Jeezy’s explanation? Does this end the speculation for you? Tell us your thoughts in the comments. Related Artists Young Jeezy Rick Ross (Hip-Hop)

Biden’s ‘The View’ Interview Tougher Than Obama’s, But Why?

Although there are few tough interviews on ABC’s “The View” – this was an exception to the rule – Vice President Joe Biden received a surprisingly more serious reception than did President Obama on the daytime celebrity show. He even had a snide remark for Whoopi Goldberg about high taxes for the wealthy. As Newsbusters reported , President Obama’s interview was essentially a rousing festival of praise for the administration and Obama’s family. By contrast, Vice President Biden’s interview, although by no means tough, was missing the slew of softball questions that Obama enjoyed. There were even some awkward exchanges between Biden and co-hosts Barbara Walters and Whoopi Goldberg, on the issues of foreign policy and taxes, respectively. While the show’s hosts continually fawned over President Obama, token conservative co-host Elisabeth Hasselbeck soon brought up Biden’s infamous F-bomb gaffe at the health care bill’s signing. Sherri Shepherd followed up by asking about the administration’s answers for angry Tea Partiers, and Whoopi Goldberg then pressed about the problem of high taxes. Biden quipped, “You have a lot of money, that’s why it bothers you,” before assuring Goldberg that he was kidding. That didn’t suffice for the comedian and actress, who continued to press the issue. “People do assume – they see somebody and say ‘They have a lot of money, so take it from them,'” Goldberg pointed out. “But no one says, ‘Well what are they doing with their money, and how are they working? Are they taking care of their family?'” “If we’re going to start talking about a national sales tax, on top of everything else, what taxes can you guys remove?” and exasperated Goldberg demanded of Biden. “I think that they’re worried, too, about how [their money] is being spent,” Hasselbeck remarked about Americans frustrated with the administration. “I think that’s a main issue, not just how it’s being taxed, but how it’s being spent, and it’s astronomical right now.” Veteran journalist Barbara Walters later pressed the Vice President on foreign policy, resulting in another mildly tense exchange. You can view the questions for President Obama’s interview on “The View” here , and compare it with Vice President Biden’s questions, which are listed below: ABC THE VIEW 8/9/10 11:23 a.m.-11:49 a.m. EDT JOY BEHAR: I was wondering, why did Dick Cheney never want to come on? Was it something I said? … BARBARA WALTERS: Mr. Vice President, you have the second most powerful job in the country, and I’m going to ask you a very simple question that may sound like a very simple question. But most people have no idea what the Vice President does except for ceremonial things. Vice President JOE BIDEN: (Unintelligible) (Laughter) WALTERS: Well, that’s why I asked. You know, you break the tie in the Senate, but do you have any power, I mean, what do you do every day? … ELISABETH HASSELBECK: You mentioned relationship with the President, and it obviously is very good, too. You know, it’s – he’s been in the past talking about words, you know, he’s told us that there are certain words that, as America, we should kind of stay away from. The “War on Terror,” “radical Islam,” etc. You get up there, health care bill signed, and you throw the F-bomb, and I’m thinking “Oh man! That might be one we shouldn’t say, too!” (Laughter) So were you surprised that you got the pass from him on that? (Laughter) BIDEN: I was just thankful my mother couldn’t hear or see it. And it was a little embarrassing. JOY BEHAR: Did you realize there was a microphone? … BEHAR: You know, there seems to be a lack of decorum in politics these days. (Laughter) You know, somebody yells out “You lie!”, another person calls Stupak a “baby killer,” and then there was a thing out of your office, Rahm Emanuel, saying that these liberal guys were a bunch of “retards,” my quotes are there. What is going on? And is it dangerous, and is it different? SHERRI SHEPHERD: Well what about the – you know, we have these Tea Party – the Tea Party people now, they’re protesting big government, health care, uh, spending — WHOOPI GOLDBERG: Taxes – SHEPHERD: And your administration – taxes – is saying that they’re these far right lunatics. I mean, why haven’t you addressed any of their – BIDEN: Well by the way, the President and I haven’t said they’re far right lunatics. Look, I think there’s an awful lot of people out there are frightened and scared. It’s a very difficult time. I travel all over the country, I’ve been in over 60 cities, people have lost their jobs, they’re unsure if they’re going to keep their homes, they’re not sure that the jobs they have they’ll keep, can I get my kid back to college, etc.? And they’re very worried. There’s fringes in every outfit. But the vast majority of these people, I think, are just frustrated. And what they don’t get yet, and I understand it, is they’re going to see that we’ve spent our time cutting taxes. We’ve given the largest tax cut in the history of America to middle class people. We’re actually paying for what we do. GOLDBERG: Okay. I like the idea of that. But when you look at how much taxation is going on in this country, you know, I ‘ve been crutching about this from the beginning. Because I don’t mind paying taxes. BIDEN: You have a lot of money, that’s why it bothers you. (Laughter) I’m joking. (Crosstalk) GOLDBERG: Here’s the interesting thing. You may see somebody, and people do assume – they see somebody and say they have a lot of money, so take it from them. But no one says, well what are they doing with their money, and how are they working? Are they taking care of their family? Are they doing – so now, if we’re going to start talking about a national sales tax, on top of everything else, what taxes can you guys remove? BIDEN: Well by – we aren’t talking about that. WALTERS: The President is. BIDEN: No, the President said he was open to listening about that. Look, we’ve set up a commission, a fiscal commission that is designed bipartisan, that is going to report after November elections back to us to say that “This is what we recommend is how to get control of the long-term deficit. And the President said everything’s on the table, everything’s on the table, from cuts, to even considering revenues. And so look, here’s the deal. The question is nobody likes taxes. Nobody likes paying taxes. And I don’t blame them. The question is, who deserves the biggest break right now?  From 2000-2007, the middle class lost ground in America. They lost ground. For the first time since 1929, you had one percent of the people making 23.5 percent of all the income. GOLDBERG: Then why not hit – and I know this must be crazy – but you know, the communications taxes, you look on the phone bill – we are being taxed within an inch of our butt. Why can’t we get some relief from those folk – people don’t mind paying the federal and the state. HASSELBECK: I think that they’re worried too about how it’s being spent. I think that’s a main issue, not just how it’s being taxed, but how it’s being spent, and it’s astronomical right now. …     BEHAR: Before we go any further, I must ask you – what is the appeal of Sarah Palin, exactly, do you think? … HASSELBECK: Is [Palin] something that the administration’s eyeing in 2-12? Or is she someone that they consider to be a legitimate threat again? … WALTERS: Can I ask some foreign policy questions, okay? While we’re at it? Because there’s some important things. Last week Defense Secretary Robert Gates said the administration does not have an adequate plan to stop Iran from developing nuclear weapons. The whole world is worrying about this. Why don’t we have a plan? BIDEN: Barbara, we do have a plan, and look, if, as the secretary said, when that, a reference to that memo was leaked. It was inaccurate, what was said, it does not reflect what the memo said, I’ve read the memo, I know the memo. We have, from the day we – actually before we took office, before we took office, one of the first things we did in putting together our national security team, was come up with a game plan as to how to deal with Iraq’s – I mean Iran’s – effort to get a nuclear weapon. We have clearly known exactly what we were doing, and – WALTERS: Sanctions are not working. BIDEN: No, no, no. Sanctions – WALTERS: But you have China doesn’t want to agree to have sanctions – BIDEN: China will agree to sanctions. There will in fact be – this is the first time the entire world is unified that Iran is out of bounds. You have a – they’re more isolated than they have ever been. They are more isolated with their own people, they are more isolated externally, they are more isolated in the region – WALTERS: So is the next step sanctions? BIDEN: The next step is sanctions. WALTERS: And if they don’t work?          BIDEN: I’m not going to speculate beyond that. It’s not appropriate to do that. … WALTERS: Also the Israelis are debating now whether they should attack themselves, without U.S. permission – attack Iran without U.S. permission. If they decided to do that, what are your thoughts? … HASSELBECK: You know, I was reading, growing up they called you “Joe Impedimenta,” is that correct, because of a stutter that you had? I mean, so many people do struggle with that. Exactly how did you overcome it over the years? … WALTERS: And you still today, you work with the American Institute of Stuttering, I just want to mention that – … SHEPHERD: One thing you’re not embarrassed about, which is so great. You’ve been married for 32 years to your wife Jill. But – I love it, because – you asked Jill five times, five times to marry you. When she said no the other four, what made you keep asking? … WALTERS: Why didn’t [Jill] want you? … HASSELBECK: A lot of people are in love with you, Mr. Vice President. Truly, you’re a pretty cool guy, I have to say. I mean, we don’t sit on the same side of the political aisle, but it’s good to share the sofa!  We’re so thankful that you are here. Thanks to the Vice President, and we’ll be right back.
