Rick Ross Doesn’t Get ‘Thought Process’ Behind Young Jeezy’s ‘B.M.F.’

The streets are speculating about Jeezy’s latest track ‘Death B4 Dishonor,’ in Mixtape Daily. By Shaheem Reid Rick Ross Photo: MTV News The O.D.: A Mixtape Daily Exclusive You know we only drop Mixtape Daily twice in one day when it really calls for it; we like to give you this dopeness in doses. Earlier, we brought you the latest on Slick Pulla , and now we’re going to keep it on the topic of CTE. As the 1515 fellas were heading out of the headquarters to begin an early b-day celebration for our very own J-Rod, CTE blasted out the new Young Jeezy record “Death B4 Dishonor” from his new mixtape 1000 Grams (due Thursday at 1:03 p.m.). The Snowman raps over Rick Ross’ instrumental to “B.M.F. (Blowin’ Money Fast),” and a few lines set Twitter on fire: “How you Blowin’ Money Fast?/ You don’t know the crew/ Oh, you part of the fam?/ Sh–, I never knew.” Plenty of people were speculating that Young was throwing not-so-subliminal jabs at Rick Ross, a Def Jam labelmate whom he has collaborated with in the past. We’ll have to catch up with Jeezy and Ross soon to find out what’s really going down, but eyebrows were first raised in late June when Jeezy released the track “B.M.F. (The Real Blowin’ Money Fast).” Young declined to speak about the song. We asked Ross what he thought about Jeezy’s “B.M.F.,” and the Carol City hitmaker said he didn’t understand it, but he wasn’t upset by the track. “I haven’t had a chance to talk to the homie,” Ross said. “I really don’t know what the thought process was behind it. My record was called ‘Blowin’ Money Fast.’ It confused me that if it was called ‘The Real B.M.F.,’ I would have called it ‘The Black Mafia Family.’ … You know, you may have to ask him. Other than that, we still reppin’, we still riding, and [my] record is getting love everywhere. So it’s all good.” What is your take on Jeezy’s new song? Share your thoughts in the comments. Katy Perry Talks Russell Brand’s Brains, Pop-Star Competition

‘There’s someone right behind me … ready to push me down the stairs, just like in ‘Showgirls,’ ‘ she tells U.K.’s Guardian about staying on top. By James Dinh Katy Perry Photo: Alberto E. Rodriguez/ WireImage Katy Perry is one hardworking girl. In preparation for the release of her new album, Teenage Dream, the singer has hit a slew of magazine covers in barely there outfits and also hosted the Teen Choice Awards, which air Monday night (August 9) on Fox. But a busy schedule hasn’t diminished Perry’s self-awareness. In a recent interview with the U.K.’s Guardian, the California Gurl talks about her pop-star status, how being with Russell Brand makes her feel smarter, and why you won’t find her getting trashed in your local bar. “I don’t feel like I’m very pop-star lame, but I’m definitely not hipster cool,” the singer said told the newspaper. “I’m somewhere right in the middle of it all. Because, for me, I want to sell out, but just not in the ‘I’ve sold out’ kind of way. I want to sell out arenas and sell millions of records.” Aside from her career goals, Perry also opened up about her relationship with fianc

CNN Sides Heavily With Opponents of Proposition 8

On Wednesday, CNN’s daytime coverage of a federal judge’s decision on California’s Proposition 8 leaned mostly towards those who opposed the voter-approved amendment to the state’s constitution, which banned same-sex marriage. When the judge’s ruling was released, which found Prop 8 to be unconstitutional, the network went so far to get immediate reaction to the ruling at a “gay” bar in West Hollywood . Don Lemon was the first CNN anchor to bring on guests on the issue 15 minutes into the 12 noon Eastern hour, none other than Gary Spino and Tony Brown, the two subjects of their pro-homosexual parenting documentary ” Gary and Tony Have a Baby .” Minutes before the two appeared, the network replayed a glowing report by senior political analyst Gloria Borger , which originally aired on June 16, profiling Ted Olson and David Boies who are fighting to overturn Prop 8. Lemon began his interview of the same-sex couple with a softball question: “So listen, Gary, I want to get you in here. Are you- h ow are you guys feeling? Are you anxiously awaiting this judge’s decision, or what- is it just something that’s in the back of your minds now? ” He asked a similar question of Brown: ” Are you feeling anxiety about this? ” Later in the interview, the CNN anchor did propose some tougher questions: “Well, Tony, the opposition says seven million people in California- seven million citizens, voters- voted for Proposition 8, which was against gay marriage. So why go against the wishes of the voters? ” Lemon even closed the interview by bringing up one of the motivating factors of those who are against same-sex marriage. Spino actually answered this question very candidly: LEMON: Gary, with anything, there is compromise- with anything. Do you see the other side? Do you see the fear? Do you understand that some people have been brought up a certain way and have certain religious beliefs, and may necessarily- may not necessarily go along with your lifestyle and the lifestyle of millions of Americans around the country, and believe that gay marriage should not be legal? SPINO: Well, here’s my thought on the subject- religion is learned. I was born this way, so I don’t have a lot of patience for that, because you’re basically taught what your parents or your grandparents- it’s a learned thing. But- you know, I was born this way. You’re not born with religion . Eight minutes later, the CNN anchor brought on Tony Perkins of the social conservative organization the Family Research Council. By contrast, Lemon didn’t wait long to become confrontational with his guest, starting with his second question: LEMON: So, I’ll ask you the other side. The people who are for same-sex marriage, who don’t want Proposition 8, would say, what’s wrong with that, if it is what the- if it is upholding the Constitution? What’s wrong with that? PERKINS: Well, first off, there is nothing in the Constitution under civil rights. Civil rights was put into the Constitution based upon racial equality, which, by the way, was adopted by the states. It was done the right way. Now, you- there’s no way you can convince anyone that 100 years ago, when that amendment was adopted, that that pertained to someone’s sexual behavior. There’s no way to make that case. I think this is- LEMON: All men are created equal, endowed by the rights of their creator? PERKINS: …[I]f you look at the 10th Amendment, unless the Constitution speaks specifically to an issue, it’s reserved to the states, and that’s exactly what California did, and that’s exactly what California’s court upheld, that the right- that the people had the right to, in fact, defend the definition of marriage. That’s what they did. This is another approach. LEMON: Okay. The reason I said all men are created equal- and we can go on. We can talk about the 14th Amendment. That’s been debated. Some people want to change it now when it- talking about it when it comes to immigration. But if two people who want to be together think- feel that they should have the same rights as the people next door who are heterosexual- under the American Constitution, regardless of what you believe about religion or about sex, or what have you, what is wrong with those two people abiding by the Constitution- paying taxes- having the same rights under our Constitution as everyone else? What is wrong with that? What is the argument against that? PERKINS: Well, Don, that’s a good question, because, actually- you know, two people do not have those rights. Under the Constitution- LEMON: Well, heterosexual or straight people do have those rights. PERKINS: No, they don’t. You don’t have- two people don’t have the right to marry whoever they want. There are restrictions. The states- this is an issue reserved to the states. Lemon spent the rest of the interview pressing his guest with this pro-same-sex “marriage” argument. Just under four hours later, 10 minutes into the 4 pm Eastern hour of CNN’s Rick’s List, correspondent Dan Simon, reporting live from outside the federal courthouse in San Francisco where the Prop 8 ruling was decided, interviewed Shelly Bailes and Ellen Pontac, a “married” lesbian couple who were opposed to Proposition 8. Simon led his interview by repeating the argument of the pro-Prop 8 side that “will of the majority has the right to decide this issue” and asked them for their take on this, but followed up with two softball questions: ” When you got married a couple of years ago, explain how that changed the dynamic of your relationship .” He then asked, ” We know this is just one stop- that, ultimately, it’s going to go to the appeals court, and then to the Supreme Court. But today- how important is today to you? What’s going through your mind? ” Later that hour, anchor Rick Sanchez read Tweets from four opponents of Prop 8, including lesbian TV host Ellen DeGeneres and Democratic Congressman Mike Quigley, with none from the opposing side [see right]. The decision from federal judge Vaughn Walker came down that hour, and CNN saw it fit to send correspondent Ted Rowlands to “The Abbey,” a “gay” bar in West Hollywood, California, whose slogan is ” 20 years and still raising the gay bar ,” as he noted during his live reporting. After Judge Walker’s ruling came out, Rowlands interviewed some of the bar’s clientele, who, as he earlier admitted, have “a vested interest” with the issue. As you might expect, all of those interviewed by the CNN correspondent applauded the ruling [see video of the report from Real Clear Politics ]. ROWLANDS: We’re at The Abbey, which is an institution- a gay bar that’s been around for 20 years , and people here are just starting to get the word. Your initial reaction? We were talking earlier about this whole thing, and now that it’s come down, what do you think? UNIDENTIFIED MALE: I think it’s excellent. It’s an overruling of an overruling. It’s back to where the law should be. I think it’s a gay issue, and I think- I know everywhere in the world- everyone in this country can vote, but I think it’s a gay issue, and I think that heterosexual people should defer to the homosexual population, and say, what do you guys want to do? And that’s what we want to do, so- ROWLANDS: All right. Well, I don’t know that that will ever happen, but everybody will have a vote. These folks have just found out the news as well. You’re from San Francisco. Your thoughts? UNIDENTIFIED MALE: I think it’s great- you know, the more we can do to get marriage recognized legally- equality, the more we can do for equality on a legal level- on a federal level, is great. So, as this goes forward, I hope it just gets better. ROWLANDS: A lot of same-sex couples, obviously, in this area of Los Angeles, Rick, and so there’s a lot of interest in this area. Your thoughts? A lot of people have been talking- a lot of people were very pessimistic, Rick, before we got this decision. But- boy, at this time, it looks like the federal courts, at least, agree with the idea of same-sex marriage, or, at least, agree that it should not be banned by the state of California . UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: Right. No, it’s huge. I’m super-excited. It’s a step in the right direction- like, we just need to keep moving forward with it. I mean, it shouldn’t even be an issue, and the fact we have to have these conversations are sad, but this is really great news. ROWLANDS: All right- initial reaction, Rick- it’s a bit tempered, as we talked about before. Everybody is well aware of the fact that this is the first step in a long process, likely going to the Supreme Court. But you can bet there will be a lot of celebrating here, right in this area, at least tonight as word travels . During The Situation Room, CNN went live to speeches during the 5 pm Eastern hour by Chad Griffin of the American Foundation for Equal Rights, one of the plaintiffs in the case arguing against Proposition 8, and Ted Olsen himself, both of whom praised Judge Walker’s decision. Perkins returned for a second interview, this time by anchor Wolf Blitzer, during the 6 pm Eastern hour. Blitzer was far less confrontational with the FRC president during the segment than his colleague Lemon. A transcript of his questions on the issue: BLITZER: Let’s get some reaction now from Tony Perkins- he’s president of the Family Research Council. He’s joining us on the phone- not a good day for what you stand for, Tony. Tell us your immediate reaction- what happens now? … BLITZER: So, obviously, you are going to see what happens in the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals. That’s considered, as you well know, a pretty liberal court of appeals. So eventually, though, it will get up to the Supreme Court. I guess you agree with that? PERKINS: Yeah, I don’t think there’s any question that it’s going to end up in the Supreme Court. Look, Ted Olson is a very smart guy- probably one of the best constitutional lawyers in the country- BLITZER: And he is a conservative Republican?… BLITZER: But you assume [that] the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals will uphold the district court’s decision today?… BLITZER: We’re just getting in, Tony, a statement from the White House . The spokesman there issuing this statement on behalf of the White House- I’ll read it to you and to our viewers: ‘ The President has spoken out in opposition to Proposition 8, because it is divisive and discriminatory. He will continue to promote equality for LGBT Americans’- lesbians, gays, bisexuals, trans-gender Americans. You got a problem with that White House reaction? … Throughout the day, CNN’s on-screen graphics also indicated the network’s slant towards same-sex “marriage.” The homosexual activist movement’s rainbow flag was featured prominently throughout the day (see screen cap above). Also, prior to the ruling, CNN.com’s article on the judge’s decision featured a photo of an anti-Prop 8 sign (see right). Overall, CNN’s Wednesday coverage of the court decision is a continuation of their pro-homosexual agenda segments from earlier in June when they were promoting their “Gary and Tony Have a Baby” documentary.

Prop 8 Ruling Celebrated By Ellen DeGeneres, Paris Hilton, More

Ricky Martin, Kim Kardashian and other celebs hit Twitter after California’s gay-marriage ban is overturned. By Kara Warner Portia de Rossi and Ellen DeGeneres Photo: Getty Images Celebrity tweeters were especially vocal on Wednesday (August 4) after U.S. District Chief Judge Vaughn R. Walker struck down Proposition 8, California’s controversial same-sex marriage ban, ruling it unconstitutional. Prop 8 was a ballot measure that passed in California during the ’08 election and was met with a shockwave of surprise and anger from within Hollywood and the country at large. The overwhelmingly positive reactions to Wednesday’s news helped put all that negativity in the past and added up to one giant virtual warm fuzzy. Ellen DeGeneres wrote, simply: “Equality won!” She later added a link to her personal website , where she deemed the ruling “a huge step forward.” DeGeneres’ wife, Portia De Rossi, followed with her own happy words: “I am ecstatic that Proposition 8 has been overturned in the state of California,” the actress said. “This is an incredibly exciting and historical day and a big step towards equal rights for all.” Paris Hilton chimed in happily: “What a huge historical day for equal rights in this country! They finally overturned Prop 8! There shouldn’t be a law on true love. :)” Other elated celeb reactions included one from “Glee” actress Kristin Chenoweth : “Prop 8 overturned in California! Allison Iraheta Gushes About ‘Don’t Waste The Pretty’ Co-Star Orianthi

‘We want to write together,’ she says of her tourmate on Adam Lambert’s Glam Nation jaunt. By Jim Cantiello Orianthi and Allison Iraheta Photo: Donald Kravitz/ Getty Images If you saw Allison Iraheta and Orianthi recently on “So You Think You Can Dance” and thought, “Dang, they have some killer chemistry,” you’re not alone. The two have been rocking together on an almost nightly basis, thanks to Adam Lambert’s Glam Nation Tour , on which they each perform opening sets and collaborate on Iraheta’s single “Don’t Waste the Pretty.” “When [Orianthi] comes out [onstage], I get all crazy,” Iraheta told MTV News when Glam Nation hit New York this summer. “I’m all, ‘Man, I gotta start getting all manly and stuff.’ ‘Cause when she plays — her face, man. She’s intense.” Allison tapped the Australian guitar wiz to give “Pretty” a dirtier rock edge versus the pop recording initially released on her debut album, Just Like You. “She brings something so different to the song. It’s so crazy,” Iraheta beamed. Allison and Orianthi (Alli-anthi?) have so much fun rocking out, the two plan to join forces more often. “We want to write together,” Iraheta said. “I even told her: ‘Let’s bring the Heart [sound] back!’ ” The redheaded rocker (who gained millions of fans when she debuted on the eighth season of “American Idol” with a Heart song, appropriately enough) even went so far as to say she’d consider creating a band with Orianthi down the road. OK, so a permanent Alli-anthi rock band probably won’t happen. Instead, fans should just keep “Don’t Waste the Pretty” on repeat and hope that their busy schedules allow for a killer music video. When we spoke with Allison in June, she hinted that she’d have time to film a proper video once her Glam Nation commitment ended. But that was before Iraheta’s stint on Lambert’s tour was extended through October, thanks to popular demand from fans. Would you like to see Allison and Orianthi join forces on the regular? Did Dr. Dre Know Detox Would Take This Long? ‘Absolutely Not’

‘I thought it would take, at worst case, a couple of years,’ he tells Vibe for his cover story with Eminem. By Hillary Crosley Eminem and Dr. Dre on the cover of Vibe Photo: Vibe While Eminem talked about death and Brittany Murphy in his interview for the Vibe “Juice” issue, Dr. Dre delved into his Detox delay , the “Under Pressure” leak and rumors of an instrumental album. The Eminem and Dr. Dre cover of Vibe ‘s 15th-anniversary “Juice” issue is a nod to their original appearance in the mag eight years ago. The issue hits newsstands August 16, and Dre began by answering the question on many fans’ minds: Did he know Detox would take this long? “Absolutely not. I thought it would take, at worst case, a couple of years,” the super-producer said. “For example, actual work time on The Chronic was nine months, and actual work time on my last album, 2001, was about 10 months. The actual work time on this album is about half of that, where I’m seriously focusing on it. There is always something coming up. Like signing talent, old and new.” The California icon also talked about the recent leak of his duet with Jay-Z, “Under Pressure.” “[That] was a little bit more frustrating, because at least ‘Crack a Bottle’ had a hook on it,” Dre said of a previous leak. “I wouldn’t be as mad at a leak if the song was done. “I’m not mad at the fans,” he continued. “I’m mad at the person that leaked the sh–. I have no idea how it got out. It’s not even worth looking to see who did it. It happens. The most painful part about it is that I’m passionate about what I do, so people should hear it in the right form. Somebody actually hacked into our e-mails, so that made our red flags go up. We’re in a new age, and that’s a sign: ‘Wake up, mother—-er. You have to be more careful with your sh–.’ That’s all there is to it. I know what’s up now.” As for an album of instrumentals, Dre said it’s definitely on deck. “Oh, yeah, that’s in the works,” he said. “An instrumental album is something I’ve been wanting to do for a long time. I have the ideas for it. I want to call it The Planets. I don’t even know if I should be saying this, but f— it. [ Laughs. ] It’s just my interpretation of what each planet sounds like. I’m gonna go off on that. Just all instrumental. I’ve been studying the planets and learning the personalities of each planet. I’ve been doing this for about two years now, just in my spare time, so to speak. I wanna do it in surround sound. It’ll have to be in surround sound for Saturn to work.” What are you expecting from Dr. Dre’s new material? Share your thoughts in the comments! Related Artists Dr. Dre Eminem

Lil Wayne Talks Eminem, Drake And Prison Life

‘Every time I pick up the phone to dial a number, I feel like I’m a bother, because I’m in jail,’ he tells Hot 97 of keeping in touch with friends and family. By Hillary Crosley Lil Wayne (file) Photo: MTV News Lil Wayne called in to New York’s Hot 97 radio station Tuesday evening (August 3) from Rikers Island to talk about his time behind bars, hopeful collaborations and his upcoming EP, I’m Not a Human Being, due in September. Wayne started his sentence on gun charges in March and is scheduled for release in November . “I’m calling you from Rikers Island right now, unfortunately,” Lil Wayne said over a crackling phone line to Hot 97’s Funkmaster Flex . When asked about the support he’s received from fans while in jail, he said, “It’s been more than amazing. I promise that I can’t explain the love and support I’ve been getting from my fans. I never knew it was like that, and I’ve been doing this for, what, 16 years? It’s breathtaking.” Wayne went on to remind listeners and fans how to reach him while he’s locked up. “All you have to do is go on my website WeezyThanxYou.com , and I think all of my information is on there where you can write to me, and I get my mail every day,” he said. “I read as much as I can and I respond, and if you want to hear me respond, all you have to do is check back on that same website, and I have a great lady named Karen Civil that puts up my responses, she puts up updates, everything is on there. Some people might faint when they see their name on there, and they be like, ‘Oh my God!’ It’s a great thing.” He also shared what he’s been listening to — and not listening to — during his jail time. “I’ll be very honest, Flex: I don’t listen to no music. All I listen to all day, if I am listening to anything, is sports. And that ain’t because of nothing, just the simple fact that I’ve never listened to anyone else’s music but my own, and since I’m not able to do that up in here, I don’t listen to anything. I don’t listen to nothing but my thoughts.” Wayne has at least checked out Eminem’s latest album, Relapse, which he’s featured on. “Em is him, and he’s back in a major way,” he said. ” … As far as Eminem the dude, he’s a great dude. He’s been keeping up with me since I’ve been in here, and I appreciate his support.” The rapper later said he’s “a sports fanatic” who “played football and baseball, and I played football more than baseball, but I never was any good, so it’s nothing to speak about. I just have a great knowledge of the game.” Wayne had a few thoughts about dream collaborations upon his release. “I’ve been saying to myself that I really want to do a song with either Andre 3000 or I really like my man Tech N9ne from the West Coast,” he said. “Other than that, I’ve been trying to do a song with this little dude Weezy; he’s stupid.” Wayne said he stays scarce when it comes to keeping up with Young Money stars Drake and Nicki Minaj. “I call Drake at least once a week, but I actually call three or four times a week, but he only picks up for me once a week,” the MC said with a laugh. As for calls to Minaj, he jokingly said, “That being my future wife, we talk every night. Nah, the same goes for her. I don’t like to bother them in the midst of what they’re doing, because I know they have a whole lot on their plate every single day. That’s my thing with everybody. They be like, ‘Why haven’t you called me?’ But it’s because I don’t want to bother. Put in this position, I just feel like every time I pick up the phone to dial a number, I feel like I’m a bother, because I’m in jail. I don’t have nothing else to do but talk to you, and that might not be what you want to do at the time. I don’t know if that’s just a conscious thing, but … I always feel like I’m bothering. I call Mack Maine every single day, and I know I get on his nerves, but he answers every single time.” Wayne went on to describe a typical day in Rikers. “I wake up around 12 noon, I jump on the phone, call Mack, call family, call my mother, call my kids — you know I got a lot of kids to call,” he said with a dry laugh. “After that, once I start reading that fan mail, literally, I could read it all day, every day because it’s so much. That fan mail knocks off like four, five hours of the day. And then I do dinner — whatever that may be in here — I jump on the phone again, and after that, I’m through.” As for what he’s learned from his stint in prison, the MC said he’ll “definitely move more carefully. I’ll definitely take heed to my situation and my status. I mean, when I ask myself … everybody says that you’re here for a reason, and I promise you, Flex, I try to find out that reason every day. I search for it. But I think when I get out, that’ll be the only time I’ll really know the answer. Every day I look for that reason.” As for Wayne’s upcoming EP, it’s on the way. “Yes, it’s gonna drop before Carter IV, only on the Internet,” Wayne said. “This is stuff that I recorded right before I came here.” As the jail phone beeped its warning that Wayne’s interview was coming to a close, the MC thanked all his fans for their support. “I don’t want the phone to hang up on us, so I want to say thank you to all my fans, and I love you, Flex, for giving me this opportunity,” he said. “I appreciate what you’re doing, Flex. Keep doing it.” What do you think about Lil Wayne’s comments from prison? Let us know in the comments. Related Artists Lil Wayne

Open Thread: President Obama Has Trust Issues

The President recently chided Republicans for their alleged lack of trust in the American people. But who really has the trust issues, wonders David Harsanyi . Was it the administration’s faith in the wisdom of the American parent that persuaded it to shut down the voucher program in Washington, D.C., and continue the left’s decades- long campaign denying school choice for kids and parents? Or was that just faith in public-sector unions? Was faith in American industry behind the Democrats’ support of a stimulus bill that was almost entirely predicated on preserving swollen government spending at the expense of private-sector growth? Is this hallowed faith in the citizenry also what compels the administration to dictate what kind of car we will be driving in the future, what kind of energy we will be filling these “cars” with and what amounts of that energy will be acceptable? Is faith in American know-how why Washington funnels billions of tax dollars each year to its handpicked industry favorites rather than allowing the best and brightest to — please pardon the pun — organically figure out what the most sensible energy policy is, as we have in every other sector? Make sure you follow the link for much, much more. Then return and tell us your thoughts.

CBS Continues to Defend Obama Vacation Time With Bush Comparison

Following a report on Saturday’s CBS Evening News , in which White House correspondent Chip Reid defended President Obama’s Maine vacation with a comparison to President Bush’s vacation time, Monday’s Early Show took the same approach as correspondent Michelle Miller reported: But it’s not just where and when presidents travel, it’s how often. Ronald Reagan took 349 vacation days at his California ranch during his eight years in office. In his first year and a half as President, George W. Bush vacationed 96 days. Over that same time period, President Obama has taken 36 days. On Saturday, Reid had similarly noted: “Whatever criticism there may be of the President’s vacation choices, he’s spent 33 days on vacation in his first 18 months. His predecessor, Bush W. Bush, spent 96 in the same period.” When Obama vacationed on Martha’ Vineyard in August of 2009 , Reid highlighted how it helped the local economy: “One thing that’s going to give a huge boost to the economy is all the Obama paraphernalia…t-shirts, it’s baseball caps and magnets and coffee mugs and glasses. And restaurants are selling the ‘Baracko Taco.’ Bars are selling ‘Ale to the Chief.’ And all of it is selling like crazy.” In the Monday Early Show report, Miller cited liberal presidential historian Doris Kearns Goodwin, who further defended Obama’s decision to vacation in Maine, rather along the tourist-starved Gulf coast: “Sure, people might wish that Obama had gone to the Gulf, but had he gone to the Gulf, now people would have said he was going there for politics.” Goodwin went on to declare: “I think presidential vacations are essential. It allows a President to relax, to replenish his energies, to think. Something they sometimes can’t do enough of in Washington.” At that point, Miller observed: “Despite any criticism, presidential vacations leave indelible images.” Goodwin chimed in: “JFK sailing is forever in our mind, that rugged JFK.” Miller concluded: “Only time will tell how President Obama’s hike in his dress shoes will compare with President Nixon’s similar walk on the beach.” Following Miller’s report, fill-in co-hosts Jeff Glor and Erica Hill shared their thoughts on the presidential vacation controversy. Glor sympathized: “I mean, the camera’s always on….I mean even when he’s there, they’re there following from spot to spot. So, you’re never really off that job.” Hill agreed: “No, no. And that kind of comes with the territory.” Glor then remarked on the First Family’s choice of getaways: “And not quite as hot there. Only high 80s, I think.” Hill added: “Oh, it’s so relaxing. Plus that nice breeze off of the Atlantic, it’s fine.”    Here is a full transcript of the Early Show’s July 19 report: 7:17AM TEASE ERICA HILL: Plus, why the first family is under fire for enjoying a little R&R. [FOOTAGE OF OBAMA EATING ICE CREAM] HILL: The ice cream gets you every time. 7:30AM TEASE HILL: Speaking of vacations, the first family spent a fun-filled weekend in Maine, a little mini vacation, but their time in the sun is stirring up plenty of controversy. So we’ll take a closer look at that as well. 7:46AM SEGMENT ERICA HILL: President Obama catching a little more flack from critics this morning. But not for his policies this time, it’s for taking a family vacation in Maine. CBS News correspondent Michelle Miller reports. MICHELLE MILLER: The First Family returned to the White House Sunday from a weekend vacation, a getaway that included hiking, boating, and eating ice cream in quaint Bar Harbor, Maine. [ON-SCREEN HEADLINE: First Family’s Maine Event; President’s Getaway Draws Criticism] UNDENTIFIED WOMAN [BAR HARBOR ICE CREAM SHOP]: I think everybody needs a weekend off to recharge and get some ice cream. MILLER: Given the ongoing crisis in the Gulf, the President’s weekend escape received a good share of criticism. DORIS KEARNS GOODWIN [PRESIDENTIAL HISTORIAN]: Sure, people might wish that Obama had gone to the Gulf, but had he gone to the Gulf, now people would have said, he was going there for politics. MILLER: Questioning presidential vacations is a time-honored tradition. The Clintons frequently sailed off of Martha’s Vineyard. But after polling the public, they switched to middle-America-friendly Wyoming. George Bush senior took heat for golfing in Kennebunkport, Maine as troops were deployed to the Persian Gulf for the Iraq war. But it’s not just where and when presidents travel, it’s how often. Ronald Reagan took 349 vacation days at his California ranch during his eight years in office. In his first year and a half as President, George W. Bush vacationed 96 days. Over that same time period, President Obama has taken 36 days. GOODWIN: I think presidential vacations are essential. It allows a President to relax, to replenish his energies, to think. Something they sometimes can’t do enough of in Washington. MILLER: Despite any criticism, presidential vacations leave indelible images. GOODWIN: JFK sailing is forever in our mind, that rugged JFK. MILLER: Only time will tell how President Obama’s hike in his dress shoes will compare with President Nixon’s similar walk on the beach. Michelle Miller, CBS News, New York. HILL: That may be the strangest thing, taking a hike in dress shoes. Out of all of this, all the criticism aside, it’s not very comfortable. You could slip very easily. JEFF GLOR: But there’s the thing, I mean, the camera’s always on. HILL: Always there. GLOR: I mean even when he’s there, they’re there following from spot to spot. So, you’re never really off that job. HILL: No, no. And that kind of comes with the territory, which- GLOR: Which he knew that. HILL: Which everybody – which everybody knows going in. GLOR: They all knew that. HILL: It’s true. GLOR: And not quite as hot there. Only high 80s, I think. HILL: Oh, it’s so relaxing. Plus that nice breeze off of the Atlantic, it’s fine. GLOR: Yes, with dress shoes.
