Lady Gaga Says She Wrote ‘A #1 Record’ In Cleveland

Gaga told her audience Wednesday night that she’d spent the day in her bus writing a new hit. By James Montgomery Lady Gaga performs in concert (file) Photo: Getty Images When Lady Gaga took the stage at Cleveland’s Quicken Loans Arena on Wednesday night, she managed not to discuss the town’s recently departed superstar LeBron James. But she did announce to the sold-out crowd that earlier in the day, she had written a brand new song that was destined to be a hit. “I wrote a #1 record in Cleveland,” she told her throngs of little monsters, according to The Cleveland Plain Dealer, adding that she had skipped a private tour of the city’s Rock and Roll Hall of Fame to work on the song in her tour bus recording studio. Earlier in the day, she took to her Twitter account to proclaim the same thing, writing, “Emerging from studio coma. Voted no visit to RockNRoll Hall of Fame, rather write a hit that puts me in it.” Gaga didn’t actually play the song in question, but she did rip through a rousing version of “You and I,” the new song she premiered at Elton John’s White Tie and Tiara Ball last month and has been performing at Monster Ball stops ever since. In theory, it’s all leading up to Gaga’s much-anticipated new album , which, according to a recent Rolling Stone interview, is totally finished but won’t be released until “early next year.” Gaga also told the magazine that she plans on getting the title of the album tattooed on her body and then releasing the photo at midnight on New Year’s Eve. ‘Inception’ Stars Weigh In On Sequel Potential At Hollywood Premiere

Leonardo DiCaprio, Cillian Murphy, Lucas Haas and Dileep Rao share their thoughts on the movie’s last scene. By Kara Warner Leonardo DiCaprio attends the “Inception” Los Angeles Premiere Tuesday Photo: Steve Granitz/Getty Images HOLLYWOOD — “Inception” is shaping up to be the moviegoing event of the summer. The sci-fi thriller written and directed by “The Dark Knight” maestro Christopher Nolan has dazzled critics and whipped expectant audiences into a frenzy before its release on Friday. But one aspect that has sparked heated debate is the particularly dubious last scene. On the red carpet of the film’s L.A. premiere, MTV News asked the film’s stars to weigh-in on that compelling final moment — as well as whether an “Inception 2” is a possibility. The film’s leading man, Leonardo DiCaprio, deftly dodged revealing any particular stance on the issue. “I have my own specific take on that final scene,” DiCaprio told MTV News, leaving his opinion out of the public debate, adding instead that he hopes the audience makes up their mind for themselves. “This is an interesting movie, because I really believe people can extract what they want from this film and interpret that in a lot of different ways. I think that’s something that doesn’t come from the Hollywood studio system very often nowadays. Often times, I get scripts that came to me recycled from other ones. Chris [Nolan] pulled off something pretty ambitious, pretty existential, pretty cerebral and daring with this movie, and I jumped on the opportunity to do it and work with him.” Cillian Murphy wished to remain neutral about the last scene. “Oh, I wouldn’t want to give an opinion on that,” he said, and of the possibility of a sequel, he added, “I don’t have the authority to speak on that.” Lucas Haas proved to be far more forthcoming. “My take? I think it’s real,” he said, which, despite its seemingly vague wording, is a definitive answer/stance to the debate about that last scene. And is there room for a sequel? “Of course,” Haas said. “I think definitely.” Dileep Rao offered further insight, advising viewers to pay attention to the scene in an unusual way. “You know what, I’ll just say this: Use your ears not your eyes.” As far as a sequel goes, Rao deferred to Nolan. “That’s up to Chris,” he said. “If we’re talking about dreams, couldn’t anything happen?” Check out everything we’ve got on “Inception.” For breaking news, celebrity columns, humor and more — updated around the clock — visit MTVMoviesBlog.com . Jimmy Buffett Changes Tune on Oil Spill, No Longer Blames Bush

Last week, singer Jimmy Buffett took a swipe at former President George W. Bush, saying that the Republican administration was responsible for the oil spill off the Gulf Coast. “To me it was more about eight years of bad policy before [President Obama] got there that let this happen,” Buffett told the Associated Press. “It was Dracula running the blood bank in terms of oil and leases.” But Buffett appeared to change his mind at his concert in Gulf Shores, Alabama on Sunday, and laid the blame for the spill solely on BP. The musician revamped the lyrics of his famous “Margaritaville” song to: “Some people claim that there’s a woman to blame; but I know it’s all BP’s fault.”  We think this revision is a bit more on-target.

MSNBC’s Contessa Brewer Lobbies U.S. Politicians to ‘Stand Up’ for Gay Rights

MSNBC’s Contessa Brewer on Monday appeared baffled as to why more U.S. politicians weren’t ‘standing up’ to demand the repeal of “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell,” touting it as “a civil rights issue.” In the span of two hours, the cable network featured a gay member of the military and a conservative to discuss the issue. It was hardly a case of hearing two sides, however. Both guests favored allowing gays to serve openly. Talking to Richard Grenell , a former spokesman for Ambassador John Bolton, Brewer editorialized, ” It is a civil rights issue…Is it time for our American leaders to stand up for what’s right and no matter what public opinion polls say to have the leadership and the courage to take a stand on it? ” Earlier, Brewer cited a survey sent out to service members asking them questions such as whether they’d be comfortable showering with an openly gay individual. The cable host dismissed, “Now, substitute in the word black or Jewish and would that question to service members ever be okay?…Why aren’t more American leaders itching for a fight on gay rights?” At the end of the segment, Brewer read viewer e-mail on the issue. Two such messages favored repealing Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell. These she recited without comment. When she read a letter disagreeing with gay rights, Brewer could hardly disguise her opinion: “Carolyn Bramblett says, “Homosexuality is a sin issue, not a civil rights issue.’ Well, you know what Jesus said: ‘Let he who is without sin.'” In the 11am hour, MSNBC featured openly gay veteran Daniel Choi to dismiss the survey. Grenell is also gay. So, the network hardly sought out a variety of voices on the subject. A transcript of the segment, which aired at 12:43pm EDT, follows: 12:20 tease CONTESSA BREWER: Another traditionally safe [makes quotes marks] constituency for Democrats also angry, this time over a survey about the potential repeal of Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell, many say has incendiary and homophobic language. The President said he wants Congress to repeal the law and Pentagon is in the process of studying the issue. But, a new survey sent out to service members asks questions that many find offensive. So, here’s the problem: Critics say the survey assumes a position of homophobia. For instance, here’s one of the questions: “If Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell is repealed and you are assigned to bathroom facilities with open bay showers with a gay or lesbian service member, would you take no action or use a shower at a different time?” Now, substitute in the word black or Jewish and would that question to service members ever be okay? This is a pivotal civil rights issue. My big question today: Why aren’t more American leaders itching for a fight on gay rights? You can share your thoughts on Twitter, Facebook. You can get me on e-mail. Contessa@MSNBC.com We’re going to have a lively discussion about this in the next half hour. 12:43 BREWER: A new Pentagon survey is stirring up the controversy because it asks very pointed questions about Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell. Some groups even suggest the survey uses homophobic language. 400,000 members of the armed forces got the question via e-mail asking questions about living with gays and using the same showers and same-sex couples in military housing.  The Pentagon is defending the questions. Rick Grenell is a conservative columnist, former spokesman to John Bolton and three other U.S. ambassadors and believes Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell should be repealed. We knew that the survey would happen. Claire McCaskill, actually, Rick, brought up her concerns about how the questions would be framed. When public policy pollsters conduct surveys to gain credibility and validity they have to formulate truly open ended questions. Do you have a problem with these questions? RICHARD GRENELL: Well, I think the key to this is having questions at all for a civil rights issue. What’s most surprising is President Obama and Nancy Pelosi that they are actually trying to say that this isn’t a civil rights issue, because clearly by having a questionnaire, they’re not so sure themselves. And I think the troubling thing for me and for a lot of conservatives is that they campaigned on this issue, that it was a civil rights issue and they were elected, they would end this. You know, when Barack Obama was a senator, he spent a lot of time telling people that it should just be taken care of with an executive order. Now that he’s president, the executive order excuse goes away and he’s blaming Congress. So, I think it’s really a difficult issue for the Democrats and they campaigned like it was an easy issue. BREWER: So, to drive this point home and it’s the argument that I made further, that if you put in instead of same-sex or homosexual and used, say, black, here would be the way the sample question would read. “If a wartime situation made it necessary for you to share a room, birth or field tent with someone you believed to be- insert here black- service-member which are you most likely to do?” And goes on to how you take action. You’re right. That question to service members would never be considered. And, in fact, when they integrated the military, my understanding is there was no general survey taken to see how service members would feel about it. It was done because it was the right thing to do. That being said, after I asked my big question today, Rick, I got a bunch of E-mail responses in. And you have people, viewers here who are writing and arguing that it’s not a civil rights issue because being born black is not a choice but being born gay is. GRENELL: Well, look, what I would say there is I’m a conservative. I think it’s outrageous that we are spending so much money, $4.5 million alone on this survey to investigate someone’s personal life. Whether you believe this is a choice, whether you believe that someone is born gay, I think it goes to the question of why are we wasting so much money to go after someone’s personal life, to investigate? It’s a national security issue when you’re encouraging people to actually lie. I’ve held a top secret security clearance. They want to know everything about you. They want to know that you’re truthful. BREWER: Right. GRENELL: At the end of the day people have to remember that individuals in the military are already showering with gay military folk. BREWER: And, again, regardless of what you think about homosexuality as an issue, that is like arguing you get to choose what region you are as an adult and you still can’t discriminate on the basis of that. I agree with you fully. It is a civil rights issue. Let’s talk about the leadership here. Is it time for our American leaders to stand up for what’s right and no matter what public opinion polls say to have the leadership and the courage to take a stand on it? GRENELL: Well, I agree. I think, yes, the answer is a definitive yes. However, it’s outrageous to me that this has been dragged through the political sphere. The Democrats are raising money off this issue. They want it to be a political issue. They are making this a political issue. They are choosing to make this a non-civil rights issue. They want this issue to go into the fall. They want to raise money and they want to make sure that Americans are constantly talking about this issue. And I think that that’s outrageous. BREWER: Rick, thank you so much for joining us. I appreciate your time. I appreciate you weighing in. A lot of folks have been weighing in online about why our nation’s leaders aren’t embracing gay rights as is civil rights issue. Clinton Hancock responds, “The politicians are too fearful of their constituents. Sometimes you have to teach your constituents, not just listen to them. Carolyn Bramblett says, “Homosexuality is a sin issue, not a civil rights issue.” Well, you know what Jesus said: Let he who is without sin. Paul Heimsath writes, “It’s 2010, people. This should not even be an issue.” You can reach out to me. Let me know your thoughts.

Exclusive: Rick Ross’ Teflon Don Album Report

MTV News previews hotly anticipated July 20 LP, which finds Miami MC in rare form with lineup including Jay-Z, Kanye West, Diddy and more. By Shaheem Reid Rick Ross Photo: Getty Images Rick Ross is in the moment. He’s reflective and he’s planning for the future — all on his new LP, Teflon Don , due July 20. Ricky Rozay has his lineup more stacked than the Miami Heat, with Jay-Z (“Free Mason”), Diddy and Trey Songz (“No. 1”), Kanye West (“Live Fast, Die Young”) in the rotation. But it’s Ross’ continued progression as an MC, the Carol City Native’s refusal to let his rhyme skills be overshadowed that really makes you take notice. As for the beat selection, it remains on par with 2009’s sonically superb Deeper Than Rap, with the Bawse using soulful instrumentation and club thumps to blanket his words. No I.D. gets shouted out for his beat on “Tears of Joy,” which co-stars Cee-Lo. It’s Church-like and soul-stirring as Cee-Lo goes to his roots with vocals worthy of a pastor’s pulpit. “To all the loved ones I leave behind/ At least they can’t see my crying,” Cee-Lo sings. “And I ask, but someone wants to be me, why?/ Done everything but ease my mind/ If you could read my mind/ My God, I’m scarred/ I got tears of joy.” “Last night, I cried tears of joy,” Ross raps on the record. “What did I do to deserve this?” ” ‘Tears of Joy,’ that’s a very strong possibility [to be a single],” Ross told MTV News. “That’s the record I’ve never done, [that] I’ve never recorded. It’s gonna be most definitely real strong. The way I wrote the record, it’s so emotional. I rhyme four bars then I gotta catch my thoughts. I start back rhyming, I say something I feel is incredible then I stop again. I start back up then I start again. I got records that I have no ad-libs on; I’m trying a lot of different things. I’m just excited man.” “Biggie Smalls in the flesh, living life after my death,” Ross later adds on “Tears of Joy,” before addressing his court battle with DJ Vlad , resolved earlier this year. “Five different lawyers, Lord knows I’m stressed / A punch in the face will get you 300K/ Ask Vlad, now he’s back to making minimum wage/ Another victim of my criminal ways/ I wanna walk in the image Christ/ But that bitch Vivica nice.” Kanye West appears on and produced “Live Fast, Die Young” . “Most definitely!” Ross told us in May. “It’s gonna be most definitely a club banger, but it has that edge to it. That’s how ‘Ye loves to make music, he loves to take it to the edge. That’s where we went with it. It makes you feel like if you had that one record the rest of your life to play, that’s it right here. It’s really gonna make you feel good. We both talk about seeing the pitfalls in our rearview [mirror]. It’s a feel-good record.” T.I., Erykah Badu and Jadakiss all line up beside Ross on “Maybach Music 3,” while Gucci Mane jumps on an extended version of the club banger “M.C. Hammer” and Raphael Saadiq lends his vocals to the last song on the album, “All The Money in the World.” “It’s funny man, the name of the record he’s on is called ‘All The Money in The World.’ It’s a record talking about how I wouldn’t trade my fundamentals for all the money in the world. I talked about people that’s no longer here: my father, a few of my friends. I talked about if I could see them again, what would I do? It was almost to that fact that I’ll sing for you. That’s what I did on the record.” “Turn off the lights,” Ross and Saadiq sing together. “Take a ride with me/ I wanna see you smile/ It’s a fantasy/ “La, la, la, la.” “Just to have Raphael Saadiq hold me down — ‘It Never Rains in Southern California,’ Tony! Lindsay Lohan Is ‘Scared To Death’ Of Jail Sentence Mom Says

‘We didn’t get a shot at fairness,’ Dina Lohan says of her daughter’s legal troubles. By Jocelyn Vena Lindsay Lohan in court on Tuesday Photo: David McNew/ Getty Images Following Michael Lohan’s interviews on CNN and Fox News about his estranged daughter’s legal woes, Lindsay’s mother, Dina, sat down with “Entertainment Tonight” for an interview airing on Friday (July 9). “[Lindsay] is scared to death,” Dina Lohan said of her daughter’s emotional state after being sentenced to 90 days in jail for probation violation. “You know, she’s strong, but until someone faces something as devastating as that … we’re going to have to see [if she can survive jail]. God willing, it won’t happen.” Lindsay and attorney Shawn Chapman Holley parted ways on Thursday, and her mother confirmed that she is currently looking for new legal counsel so that she can file an appeal. “She’s a fighter, and until the final result, we’re not giving up,” Dina said. “I think it’s time we get another attorney just to see it from another light and do damage control.” At Tuesday’s hearing, Dina said that her daughter felt “completely blindsided” because she thought she had been in compliance with her parole terms. The judge ruled that Lindsay violated probation by missing her alcohol education classes, but Holley and several legal experts told MTV News that the resulting sentence seemed excessively harsh. “This is not an OJ Simpson trial, which they made it out to be,” Dina said, criticizing Judge Marsha Revel. “If she wants a trial, then make it a fair trial. I feel like Shawn [Chapman Holley], Lindsay’s [former] attorney should have stood up and said, ‘Listen, I didn’t know you were going to have witnesses.’ We would have had 10 witnesses. We didn’t get a shot. We didn’t get a shot at fairness.” Lohan described how she and her daughter are dealing with the idea that as of July 20, Lindsay will be in jail. “It’s very difficult,” she said. “We’re not sleeping well; we’re not functioning. We cry a lot and we hug a lot. She’s petrified. We all are. We’re angry. We’re disappointed in the system. “She did a really stupid thing,” Dina admitted. “Thank God she didn’t hurt anyone. … I know my daughter is clean and sober today. I know that for a fact. I’m not a doctor … and I’m not an attorney. I’m a mother. And I’m sitting here, as a mother, just worried about my child.” Do you think Dina and Michael Lohan are sincere in their interviews about Lindsay? Share your thoughts in the comments. Emmy Nominations Spur ‘Glee’ Cast Text-Message Chain

‘Mad Men’ star Jon Hamm says he, too, ‘woke up to 18 texts’ congratulating him. By Kelley L. Carter Matthew Morrison, Lea Michele, Chris Colfer and Jane Lynch Photo: Angela Weiss/ Getty Images The sweet, gleeful sound of a text-message alert woke Jane Lynch up Thursday morning (July 8). “I was aroused from a deep sleep!” the actress told People magazine about her 5 a.m. text. “It’s always a surprise and it’s always exciting.” Lynch was being informed that she was nominated for an Emmy for Best Supporting Actress in a Comedy for her work on “Glee” and also for a guest spot on CBS’ “Two and a Half Men.” Likewise, co-star Matthew Morrison was nominated for Best Lead Actor in a Comedy and told the magazine that he prepped himself for the early morning Emmy announcements by running 7 miles. “You try to not put too much importance on something like this, and I want to say it doesn’t matter to me, but I can’t seem to wipe this smile off my face right now,” he said. “Glee” racked up 19 nominations, which Morrison said set off a text-message chain. “I talked to [creator] Ryan [Murphy and] I’m so happy for [fellow nominee] Chris Colfer . I texted Jane and I texted Lea [Michele], and I texted the hair and makeup department! We have all been in the loop,” he said. Colfer, 20, plays newly out-of-the-closet high school student Kurt Hummel. “I knew there was the possibility, but I don’t think I could have expected this,” he said, adding that he phoned just about everyone, including “the lunch ladies from my high school and pretty much anyone!” Colfer also told USA Today that the recognition was extra special because many of his fans have shared with him the significance of his character. “I know how important the character is to so many people, especially kids who have been told it’s not OK to be who they are,” he said. “The thing I’m most excited about is those kids get to see Kurt get nominated.” The “Glee” actors weren’t the only ones sending around text messages. “Mad Men” star Jon Hamm told USA Today that he “woke up to 18 texts. That’s sort of a new development,” said the actor, who also was nominated for his guest stint on NBC’s “30 Rock.” The 62nd annual awards show will air Sunday, August 20.
