Drake Reveals Plans For Album With Lil Wayne

Drizzy jokes to Tim Westwood about rivaling Kanye and Jay-Z’s Watch the Throne. By Alvin Blanco Drake and Lil Wayne Photo: Julia Beverly Jay-Z and Kanye West already have two potential challengers to their upcoming Watch the Throne. In an interview with U.K. radio personality Tim Westwood, Drake announced that he and Lil Wayne are working on a joint album of their own, and he took a couple of jabs at Hova and Yeezy’s project in the process. “I’ll be on [ Tha Carter IV ], though … We’ve done a great song … and then we’re going to do another one, and another one,” the Young Money MC said. “We still got to do that album. I heard some other guys are coming out with an album, too. There’s two other rappers that are coming out with an album together. … I don’t know where they got that idea but …” Westwood probably knew Drake was referring to Jay-Z and West but played into the coy act, saying, “I’m very slow; can you just break it down a bit simpler for me please?” Then Drake continued, “I just caught wind of it through the grapevine, that there’s some other album coming out with two guys rapping on it too.” “Oh, those two … you mean the older guys,” Westwood said. “Oh, I didn’t say that,” Drake replied. “They look young to me … in their movements.” West and Drake haven’t been as close as they seemed back in 2009, when Yeezy directed the up-and-comer’s video for “Best I Ever Had.” The Toronto rapper recently was left off of the final version of West’s “All of the Lights,” but he told Shade 45 radio that he was OK with it. Drake’s sophomore album, Take Care, is due later this year. Related Photos Drake And Lil Wayne: A Look Back In Photos Related Artists Drake Lil Wayne

Kanye West, Jay-Z Watch The Throne Pairing Treads New Ground

Album collaborations are rare in hip-hop history. By Steven Roberts Kanye West and Jay-Z Photo: Getty Images Now that their first single, “H.A.M.,” has debuted, it looks like Jay-Z and Kanye West’s highly anticipated Watch the Throne album is actually happening. West tweeted about the collaboration in August , and confirmed it a few months later, saying the project would now be a full album . But few would have guessed it would be released so soon — right on the heels of West’s critically lauded My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy — and there aren’t too many examples in music history of two superstars collaborating on an album. Click for photos of other great collaborations in music history. There have been plenty of rock “supergroups” who have released albums over the years, starting with the likes of Cream (Eric Clapton, Ginger Baker and Jack Bruce) and Crosby, Stills and Nash (David Crosby, Stephen Stills and Graham Nash) in the 1960s and continuing to Velvet Revolver (Slash, Scott Weiland, Dave Kushner, Duff McKagan and Matt Sorum), Them Crooked Vultures (Dave Grohl, Josh Homme and John Paul Jones) and Audioslave (Chris Cornell, Tom Morello, Tim Commerford and Brad Wilk). However, there isn’t as rich a history of duos and groups coming together in hip-hop. The Wu-Tang Clan and N.W.A are as influential as any groups in hip-hop, but their members’ reputations didn’t flourish until they embarked on their own. And they were originally groups to begin with. The Firm saw Nas join forces with AZ, Foxy Brown and Nature under the production of Dr. Dre and the Trackmasters, but besides Nas, the group’s members are far from household names. More recently, Nas teamed up with Damian Marley to release Distant Relatives , but neither of these artists can touch the current popularity of West or Jay-Z. Barbara Streisand enlisted Barry Gibb to write an album for her during the height of the Bee Gees’ success in the late ’70s. In 1980, the pair produced Streisand’s Guilty , which went on to sell 20 million records and win a Grammy. While anyone would be hard-pressed to match that success, Jay-Z is no stranger to collaborative albums. He teamed up with R. Kelly to record Best of Both Worlds in 2002. At the time, Jay-Z was arguably the most-popular rapper and R. Kelly was certainly the biggest R&B artist. The two had previously collaborated successfully on Kelly’s “Fiesta” remix and Jay-Z’s “Guilty Until Proven Innocent,” so an album seemed like the ideal next step. By time the album would be released, however, R. Kelly was embroiled in very public trial. The pair would try again with Unfinished Business in 2004, but tensions eventually boiled over. Amid their respective controversies, both albums were certified platinum. Jay also collaborated with Linkin Park in 2004 to release Collision Course , which saw the group and Hov reworking and mashing up their previous recordings. Jay also unofficially collaborated with Danger Mouse on The Grey Album , a mash-up of Jay’s The Black Album and the Beatles’ self-titled White Album . The Grey Album would go on to launch the career of Danger Mouse, who has since released albums with Cee-Lo Green under the name Gnarls Barkley and The Shins’ James Mercer as the band Broken Bells. West produced the majority of Common’s Be and Finding Forever albums, and he was rumored to be working with Pharrell and Lupe Fiasco on a CRS (Child Rebel Soldier) album. Kanye West Drops ‘Monster’ Single With Jay-Z, Nicki Minaj

Rick Ross and Bon Iver also appear on the song from West’s joint album with Jay, Watch the Throne. By Mawuse Ziegbe Jay-Z and Kanye West Photo: Dimitrios Kambouris/ WireImage Kanye West is making good on his word. The outspoken MC announced Sunday that he’ll be dropping a new track every Friday until Christmas with his “G.O.O.D. Friday” campaign. On Friday (August 27), West posted “Monster” on his KanyeUniversecity.com blog , an eclectic all-star collaboration featuring contributions from Jay-Z, Rick Ross and Nicki Minaj. West collaborator Bon Iver also lends his folky vibe to the track. The Chi-Town lyricist tweeted that the track was the second offering from Watch the Throne, his newly-announced joint album with Jay-Z . An ominous chorus of distorted vocals opens the track just before Ricky Rozay kicks off his verse over the beat, which is a meaty slice of choppy, drum-driven boom-bap. “Bitch, I’m a monster/ No good bloodsucker/ Fat mother—-er/ Now look who’s in trouble,” Ross spits. Then Kanye enters the fray: “Gossip, gossip/ N—a, just stop it/ Everybody know/ I’m a mother—-in’ monster.” Yeezy rides the beat with several more hard-hitting, bravado-laden bars, unapologetically feeling himself as he wraps up with “My presence is a present/ Kiss my ass.” Hov abandons his typical crisp, cool lyricism and attacks his verse with a hungry, almost sinister flow. “Sasquatch, Godzilla, King Kong, Loch Ness/ Goblin, ghoul, a zombie with no conscience/ Question: What do these things all have in common?/ Everybody knows I’m a mother—-in’ monster,” Jay rhymes. Although the track surfaced the same day Minaj tweeted about supposedly marrying Drake , the Young Money Barbie shows no signs of possibly being mellowed by a relationship, delivering a collection of punch lines buoyed by her trademark energy. “Pull up in a monster/ Automobile gangsta/ With a bad bitch that came from Sri Lanka/ Yeah, I’m in that Tonka/ Color of Willie Wonka/ You can be the king but watch the queen conquer,” Minaj rhymes. Kanye West Announces Joint Album With Jay-Z

Chicago MC tweets about dropping a five-song record called Watch the Throne. By Mawuse Ziegbe Jay-Z and Kanye West Photo: Dimitrios Kambouris/ WireImage Last week, Kanye West tweeted that he’s planning to drop a new song every Friday until Christmas. On the first “G.O.O.D. Friday” (August 27), the lyricist announced he has some other new music coming down the pike: ‘Ye said he’s teaming up with Jay-Z to release a collabo album. “Me and jay bout to drop a 5 song album called Watch the Throne, ” West tweeted . A rep for West didn’t respond to MTV News’ request for comment by press time. The announcement comes on the heels of a Jay-Z-assisted remix of ‘Ye’s “Power” hitting the airwaves. After West announced in an August 11 interview that a revamp of the percussion-heavy track featuring Hov would arrive just two days later, the MC got to work on the collabo. “He definitely, definitely was focused,” producer Swizz Beatz told MTV News about ‘Ye’s hustle to finish the record, which also boasts vocals from John Legend. ” ‘Cause when he made that announcement, we didn’t have what we had. But you know when something feels right and it’s time to let something to go.” Jigga and ‘Ye’s professional relationship goes back years to when the then-upstart producer furnished the Brooklyn MC with hit tracks like 2001’s “Izzo (H.O.V.A.)” before eventually signing to his Roc-A-Fella label. Now, both artists are regarded as two of the most high-profile and respected lyricists in the game. “Jay-Z, Kanye West and Drake,” Miami Heat baller Chris Bosh said when pressed by MTV News about his hip-hop dream team. “Easy! Well, just the fact of Jay-Z’s longevity. And he can really rap. Some of his stuff from ’01 and The Blueprint is stuff I’m just now getting. Like, ‘Ohhhh, that’s what he meant. OK, I get that line.’ He was so far ahead in what he rapped about and what he did. I’m just now catching up. Kanye is super creative in what he can do with the beat machine. And his words, he’s more a passionate type of guy.” Are you excited for a Jay-Z and Kanye West album? Let us know in the comments below! Related Artists Kanye West Jay-Z
