Dave Grohl Goes DIY Route For Foo Fighters’ ‘Rope’ Video

New clip premieres Thursday on MTV, with exclusive band Q&A to follow on MTV.com. By James Montgomery Dave Grohl in the Foo Fighters’ “Rope” video Photo: RCA By now, you’ve probably heard Dave Grohl sum up his directorial body of work as having “lots of hair” (while, at the same time, remaining strangely “waxed”). But despite that assessment — and his work on the Foos’ brand-new “Rope” video , which premieres Thursday at 7:54 p.m. ET/PT on MTV and MTV.com — you’d probably be surprised to know that Grohl doesn’t really consider himself to be a director at all. “I’m not a director. I don’t even know how to use the equipment, but it’s fun to try,” he laughed. “[And these days] any kid can do exactly that and have a million people watch it. That’s awesome.” He’s talking, in part, about the video for “Rope,” but also his shot-on-VHS quickie clip for another Wasting Light song, “White Limo,” which was filmed in just six hours on an old handheld and has since gone on to eclipse the 1 million-view mark on YouTube. To Grohl, they’re basically the same thing: proof that, in this day and age, bands don’t have to break the bank to make a video. They just have to have a killer idea (and maybe a cameo by Lemmy too). “It’s nice now that there’s not as much importance put on videos as there was in the past. People used to spend, like, $5 million making a video. You think people do that now? They don’t,” Grohl said. “They get a VHS camera, and they make a video in six hours, and today, over 1 million people have watched ‘White Limo,’ the video we made with a VHS camera. And it’s cool. Anybody can do that. That’s f—ing rad.” The Foo Fighters’ “Rope” video premieres live at 7:54 p.m. ET/PT on Thursday on MTV and MTV.com, followed by an exclusive Q&A session from one lucky Foo fan’s house to be live-streamed on MTV.com. ‘American Idol’ Finalist Pia Toscano Plots Her Strategy

Cover of the Pretenders’ ‘I’ll Stand By You’ secures her spot in top 13. By Gil Kaufman Pia Toscano Photo: Kevin Winter/ Getty Images It’s easy to think big when you’re the underdog. And that’s definitely the position New Jersey “American Idol” auditioner Pia Toscano is coming from. After wowing America last week and earning a spot in the finals, Toscano spoke to MTV News at Thursday night’s post-elimination bash about her plans for putting together a successful run on the show. “I definitely want to have those big ballads. Since I was a little girl, I’ve always taken to those huge voices: Celine Dion, Whitney Houston, Mariah Carey. So I definitely want to bring that back,” she said of her plan to stick to the strategy that got her where she is now. “But I also want to have those fun dance hits as well.” After flying mostly under the radar so far this season, the raven-haired singer made headlines Wednesday when she performed a stunning cover of the Pretenders’ “I’ll Stand By You,” which stole the thunder of the rest of the female competitors that night and locked in her place in the top 13. Toscano, 21, was stunned by the reaction from the audience and the judges following her performance. Holding her hands in front of her mouth as Randy Jackson reminded her of the standing ovation she had just received, she seemed floored when he told her that her performance immediately ranked among the best performances in the show’s history. “That was unbelievable,” Jackson told her. “That’s how you do it!” Steven Tyler, after invoking one of his nonsensical Tyler-isms (“You know, after Monday and Tuesday, even a week says WTF” — WTF??), agreed with Jackson’s assertion that she was “unbelievable,” adding as well that it was “gorgeous.” Jennifer Lopez kicked the praise up a notch, calling the performance “out of this world.” “You were saving that for when it counts!” she teased Toscano. Talk about saving your best for last. Toscano said that after not getting much screen time during the early rounds of the show, she was glad that she peaked before the final cut-down. “I felt like I never really showed all that I could do on the show, and I’m so happy that I did save it for when it counted,” she said. “I’ve grown so much as a person and as a vocalist throughout this competition, and I’m so happy that that was my moment to shine.” Toscano will have to prove that she’s more than a one-trick pony Wednesday, when the top 13 take the stage for the first round of live performance and results shows and get a taste of the pressure that comes with singing on live TV every week. Can Pia Toscano win “American Idol”? Sound off below! Dave Grohl Says Foo Fighters’ ‘Rope’ Video Is ‘Claustrophobic’

New clip premieres on MTV on Thursday, with exclusive band Q&A to follow on MTV.com. By James Montgomery The Foo Fighters Photo: Steve Gullick Over the years, Dave Grohl has directed a handful of Foo Fighters videos — “My Hero,” “Monkey Wrench,” “All My Life” — and these generally fall under the category of “the ones where the bandmembers don’t wear funny disguises.” In fact, if there’s a unifying theme to his work, it’s probably that. But if you dig a bit deeper, you start to notice another similarity between Grohl’s videos: They’re all, on some level at least, performance clips. They’re artfully done, of course, but still feature the band doing what they do best: rocking hard. So, when it came time to direct the Foo Fighters’ brand-new video for “Rope” — which makes its world premiere Thursday at 7:54 p.m. ET/PT on MTV — Grohl didn’t stray far from his tried-and-true formula. “I’ve made a couple Foo Fighters videos, and it’s easy for me to come up with a treatment or direct the band because I know what we’re like, and I know what we look like when we play. So most of the Foo Fighters videos that I’ve done have at least a little bit of performance in them,” he told MTV News. “Some of them are entirely performance-based, like the new one. The video for ‘Rope’ was meant to really just look like the band performing the song in a really tight, claustrophobic space, not unlike our rehearsal space. I think practicing in this little rehearsal space that we have really influenced that idea, and we actually set up just as we do in rehearsal for the video.” Of course, as “Rope” proves, even the simplest of concepts can pack a wallop. As Grohl said, there’s a creeping claustrophobia to the new video, a rapidly ratcheting sense that the walls are closing in … a feeling that’s echoed on the band’s upcoming Wasting Light album . This not only adds another level to the clip, but makes it a worthy addition to Grohl’s ever-growing, exceedingly hairy body of work, too. “I’d say my body of work is thin in places, and some places don’t have hair where there should be, and other places there’s, like, lots of hair. But it’s pretty nice,” he laughed. “It’ll get big, it’ll get smaller, it just depends. But I’m very proud of my body of work. Let’s just say it’s waxed.” The Foo Fighters’ ‘Rope’ video premieres live at 7:54 p.m. ET/PT on Thursday on MTV and MTV.com, followed by an exclusive Q&A session from one lucky Foo fan’s house to be live-streamed on MTV.com. ‘American Idol’ Elimination Episode Crushes TV Competition

‘Idol’ puts up biggest non-sports Thursday ratings numbers since 2007. By Gil Kaufman Steven Tyler holds up his swear sign on “American Idol” Photo: FOX Simon who? Perhaps putting to rest any fears that “American Idol” would nosedive without iconic judge Simon Cowell, Thursday night’s first elimination episode of season 10 put up some stellar numbers for the singing competition. On a night when most of the competition on rival networks consisted of reruns (including, count ’em, six episodes in a row of “The Office” on NBC!) after the vaults were emptied last month during sweeps, “Idol” raked in 25 million viewers to win the ratings crown. In fact, the impressive numbers for “Idol” gave Fox the most-watched non-sports Thursday night number of any network over the past four years. The two-hour extravaganza, which not only shaped the top 10 , but also featured six performances by singers vying to score three wild card spots — not to mention the debut of judge Jennifer Lopez’s “On the Floor” music video — was a 29 percent increase of last season’s first elimination night, according to Billboard With an 8.1 rating in the 18 to 49 demo, numbers were also up 13 percent over last Thursday’s “AI” episode. As you might expect, ratings climbed during the pivotal final half-hour of the broadcast, going from 25.96 million between 9 p.m. and 9:30 p.m. to 26.66 million for the final half-hour. The good ratings news bodes well for the start of live competition next week, when new judges Steven Tyler and Jennifer Lopez will have to finally show their stuff during two real-time broadcasts a week after charming viewers during the season’s pre-taped episodes. Academy Civil War Brewing Over 2012 Oscar Hosts?

The Great Oscar Host Debacle of 2011 remains an open wound today at the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, from which Academy president Tom Sherak ruminated about the efficacy (or lack thereof) of James Franco, Anne Hathaway, and/or any comics who might have assumed their places. But the real fun starts, however, with the told-you-so moment supplied by an anonymous, “high-ranking Academy member.”
