Rodriguez/ Getty Images On Monday night, the night before “American Idol” debuts its top 12 contestants , Kara DioGuardi stopped by Jay Leno’s “Tonight Show” couch to talk all things season nine. The “Idol” judge dished on her tableside flirtation with Simon Cowell, defended the performance of Ellen DeGeneres and admitted that her nerves got in the way of her commentary last season. ‘American Idol’ Season 8 Memorable Moments “It was freshman year,” DioGuardi explained about her first year behind the judges’ table. “It sucked. I’d never been on television. The 30-second sound bite — I’m Italian, that’s impossible! To shut up is difficult!” This year, she’s finally started to have fun on “Idol.” From a viewer’s perspective, there’s no doubting DioGuardi has become more comfortable on camera and has been able to deliver more insightful criticism . “I think this year, it’s more about the contestants because I’m not feeling as nervous, so I can zero in on them and what they’re feeling and what they’re going through,” she said. “It’s just a different experience and it feels way better.” Leno also made a point of questioning the ongoing coziness between Kara and Simon. The two judges seemed to be snuggling up to each other over the last few weeks — something that even Ryan Seacrest addressed at one point. DioGuardi is a newlywed, while Cowell recently got engaged . So what’s going on between the duo? “I’m trying to figure it out,” DioGuardi said with a laugh. “I don’t know if it’s because he’s got a girlfriend and he’s got separation anxiety and he needs to lean into me.” Before the segment wrapped up, DioGuardi came to the defense of DeGeneres, who has come under criticism for delivering kind words rather than accurate, constructive critiques from behind the judges’ table. Kara maintained that Ellen is “doing a great job.” “It’s scary,” she added. “She’s getting used to that. Former ‘Tonight Show’ host will kick off the ‘Legally Prohibited from Being Funny on Television’ tour on April 12. By Jocelyn Vena Conan O’Brien Photo: Bryan Bedder/ Getty Images Conan O’Brien is ready to take his act on the road. The former late-night funnyman will go on a 30-city, two-month-long tour along with a few friendly faces. Titled the “Legally Prohibited from Being Funny on Television” tour, a jab at the fact that he can’t appear on television until September in accordance with his exit contract with NBC, he will be joined by Andy Richter and his former late-night band. According to the Hollywood Reporter , O’Brien said of the decision to tour, “It was either a massive 30-city tour or start helping out around the house.” News of the tour first spread after a report popped up on TMZ last week. The tour kicks off April 12 in Eugene, Oregon, and O’Brien will play theaters in at least 20 states and two Canadian provinces. American Express is sponsoring the trek, and organizers say, “It promises to be a night of music, comedy, hugging and the occasional awkward silence.” O’Brien also took to Twitter to talk about the tour. “Hey Internet: I’m headed to your town on a half-assed comedy & music tour. Since August 2008, Sarah Palin has been one of the most famous political figures in the country. Since August 2009, she’s been one of our most famous figures, period. By August 2010, she may be unrivaled in the fame department. Last week, we reported how the former Alaska governor was working on a TV series about her home state, pitched by none other than famed producer Mark Burnett. A day before that, her publishers at HarperCollins announced she was embarking on a second book , a follow-up to her blockbuster best-selling memoir, Going Rogue . The day before that , she was the marquee guest on The Tonight Show , upstaging the likes of Olympic champion Shaun White and American Idol star Adam Lambert . No small feat there. Sarah Palin speaking at some event recently . At least on the surface, she remains engaged in politics, praising the Tea Party movement, and somewhat involved in journalism … or whatever Fox News is. A joke she told on The Tonight Show said it all: “The truth is, though, I’m glad that I’m not vice president. I would not know what to do with all that free time.” Bam! Seriously, though. No one works harder at being a celebrity than Sarah Palin, whether she’s hitting an Oscar gift suite or trying to cash in on teen mom Bristol Palin . But toward what end? A 2012 presidential run? Tens of millions? A daily talk show? Oprah-like, single-name dominance of pop culture and soon the entire universe?
